      I liked it when he played Poe. Did you see that one?
      I was at the Poe house in Baltimore to hear a reading of Poe's work. I heard a lady's voice & I went up the stairs in time to look in the upstairs room as the lady stated she hated Mr. Poe's work...As she said that a shutter that had been leaning against the was picked up and thrown at her!
      She left and I found out she'd never come back to pick up her check. I said out loud and ment it that I luved his work.

    I like the theatrical ending better. That tiny hint of a smile as his wife stares at him in total shock, his expression inscrutable, while their daughters voice plays in the background. Gives me goosebumps. And for me it beats the idea that after all the events of the movie the room is just resetting for more victims with the addition of one more ghoul.

  • @bloodymarvelous4790
    @bloodymarvelous4790 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I much prefer the "happy" ending to the jump scare in the cemetery. The reaction by Mary McCormack when she heard her dead daughter's voice gave me the chills. The jump scare shouldn't happen outside Room 1408, and felt cheap. The horror experienced inside the room was far more gripping.

  • @sign543
    @sign543 5 ปีที่แล้ว +51

    The short story written by King is the best version, hands down. Like I’ve always maintained, some of King’s horror just isn’t meant to be adapted for the screen, because much of the fears his characters experience is abstract (or close to abstract)...or just hard to translate into a visual that is frightening to others. For example, I had a recurring nightmare as a child where I was being followed around by a single fireplace brick. This would not look frightening in a film, but it didn’t make it any less frightening to me. Sometimes certain scary things are only scary if they’re happening to you. Perspective. This story was frightening to me because I could imagine myself in the same situation as the character while reading it. Seeing it on screen made it far less frightening. King has a unique talent for tapping in to personal fears, probably because he has so many fears himself. He explores those in his stories, and they are usually very frightening in this format (writing). When you try to adapt it to the screen, the effect is more or less lost...or at least diminished. A prime example is also the ending of the book “It”. It’s frightening on the page, but once you try to recreate it in a film sequence, it loses its effect. Many things are just not at all frightening unless they’re happening to YOU at that moment.

    • @Kazza_8240
      @Kazza_8240 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Plus you get to experience characters thought processes, if they're going crazy, or if they're terrified, you get to read their thoughts, I think that makes it easier to relate to as well.

    First saw 1408 back in 2009 when I was on training for my new position. My manager told me about the movie, sounded interesting enough, so I gave it a watch. Loved it. I actually prefer the ending where Michael survives. Having gone what he went thru and his past, I felt he deserved a second chance. But, I've always kind of interrupted the "darker" ending differently. Even though he died in the room, Michael still beat and escaped it. He isn't trapped for eternity, but simply visiting casually, enjoying a smoke. Mike's daughter then calls for him, and so he just leaves to go to Katie.

    I really enjoyed this movie as well. 1408 is definitely a super underrated film. I think the movie is very well written and John Cusack does a fine job in the role as the story unravels. The grieving theory is interesting. But it's pretty well documented that the progression of the room's activity represent the levels of Hell from Dante's Inferno. But both can totally be right at the same time.

  • @PlayfulOtter

    I really enjoyed this video. I have to disagree, politely, though. The theatrical ending is better because of the themes of grief and growing. At one point, isn't it mentioned that the room attacks harder the less someone believes? So for the main character being the cynic that he is, the room goes all out on him, putting him through hell and showing him the darkest parts of himself. Forcing him to move though the pain and also find a balance between cynicism and belief. If he died at the end he wouldn't have learned any lessons. His survival and playing the tape for his wife to prove to himself and others that what he went through was real and that the room is powerful.

      not all stories should or deserve a happy ending. It is what made twilight zone a great show. Not all stories ended happily.
      like the episode where all a guy wants to do is read, he gets his wish and is able to read all he wants. What happens is his glasses break and unable to read.

    The ending where he is pulled out alive is pretty interesting. Only someone can come get him out, he could never get himself out or even ask someone to get him out. They'd have to come there completely of their own volition and pull him out. Also it means the ghosts of the room aren't as powerful as we thought, only controlling reality within the rooms limits.

    I'm a huge King fan, and I loved the 1408 film adaption. However, just as an FYI, King did not encounter any ghosts at the Stanley Hotel. It was end of season, much like in the Shining, and the hotel was empty as King and his wife were the only guests. King had nightmares, whilst staying at the hotel, about his son being chased down the long empty corridors by a fire-hose. He work up, covered in sweat, but with the beginning of a story running rampant through his head. He moved to a window overlooking the rocky mountains, pulled up a chair and lit a cigarette. By the time the cigarette was smoked, he already had the plot of 'The Shinning' mapped out.

    • @werecoth
      @werecoth 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both endings were happy endings. In the original/ DVD release ending where he dies he is clearly reunited with his daughter as she calls to him and he walks out of the room to her.
      The room was destroyed. They may be echos, yet given the funeral seen it isn't likely.
      The theatrical ending sees him learn a lesson and find his truth about the afterlife he was searching for while reuniting with his estranged ex wife who also hears their daughter.
      Both have merits. In both he beats the room yet pays a price.
      In the short story it is based on he also survives though is significantly traumatized to lasting effect.

      Nope, 1408 came before as far as I can tell... The original audiobook 1408 came out in 1999 and the printed collection in 2002, both being available before SH4: The Room came out in 2004.

      Agreed, although this gonna sound wierd but if I watch The Hills Have Eyes remake. The main protag of that movie really reminds me of Henry, he even looks like him. And the fact he got himself into a place with deformed creatures. The resemblances are there, atleast for me.

    Don't forget that 1408 is based off a real hotel room at the Omni Parker House Hotel (home to the inventions of Lobster Newburg, Boston Cream Pie, and Parker House Rolls) in Boston, Massachusetts. Had a chance to visit 10 years back. Has some history and some historical figures have even been employed there: Malcolm X was once a busboy there, Emeril Lagasse was the sous chef there from 1979 to 1981, and Ho Chi Minh used to be a baker there. Even has some presidential history: John Wilkes Booth stayed there, JFK announced his candidacy for Congress there, he proposed to his wife there, and his bachelor party was there.
    Has a room that's haunted: the room has been walled over and the lights will still come on even though the electricity has shut off for that particular room. Can even be seen from the street.

      (due to superstition)
      are deliberately designed
      to NOT have a thirteenth floor,

    #6 There was also a disturbing scene in the book version of The Stand where one of the POV characters and a guy he was traveling with spend the night at an abandoned motel (which is like a hotel) and... well... let's just say you could tell without knowing their backstories that these guys have done some prison time.
    Also, in Salem's Lot the boarding house (which is also kind of like a hotel) that the main character was staying at becomes infested with vampires.

    he never really stepped into nothing. he dies right at the beginning of the movie. at the beach. the whole movie is his "purgatory" and he has to deal with everything wrong in his "life" to go on.
    dealing with his father, the fear of becoming him, the death of his little one, his wife, who needed him, but he was to hurt to help her or even himself, his complete lost of faith and so on.
    it's his own journey into the void. only by dealing with all of it..he can somewhat set himself free or become part of the room, like the other ones. stuck in limbo forever.
    so actually no ending really makes sense. still one of the better ones out there. 1408 is the philosophical answer to everyones horror needs.

    One hidden gem in the movie I have not seen discussed is the name of the brandy that the Manager gives to the character. In several scenes it's revealed that it is called "les cinquante sept deces," which, according to google, is French for 'fifty-seven deaths." Jackson tells him in the same scene that there have been 56 deaths in the room; so Cusack was to have been the 57th death. How cool is that? Of course, if you speak French, Jackson says the name up front, but I don't so had to figure it out by waiting to see the name on the bottle during two of the room scenes.
