The FAA really needs to tell Amazon to bugger off already, and I'm glad you lot are working so hard to convince them to do so. We have been a non-issue for nearly a century now and the advent of DJI drones has not changed that. There is no safety issue, no grounds to push us out of the airspace.
Any new regs aren't grounding me, though. I will fly anyway. I'm not putting geofencing or GPS on my models either way. I'll just fly outlaw. I'm not letting Amazon tell me I can't enjoy this hobby.

I completely agree with you. What Amazon wants to do should not be allowed at all and should not even be considered. Amazon don't have to abide by the line of sight rule but I can't safely fly my models line of sight? Fat chance that will happen!
I could give two shits what they come up with I will be flying my models safely and away from full size aircraft as I have been since the early 80s without incident!

@Cerus98 It has everything to do with package delivery because the drivers behind this shit are big corps like Amazon. And what do you think a big corp like Amazon is gonna do with the airspace once they've booted us lot out of it, hrm?
This is not a safety thing. It never was. The whole 'we gotta make the air safer' thing is a ruse, a boldfaced lie told to you so you'll blindly accept whatever bullshit corpo giants like Amazon want.
Tellingly, there's an article on Financial Times about these very big wig CEOs finding our fierce resistance shocking. Now ask yourself this: Why the fuck would they care about our resistance to these proposals if they weren't trying to boot us out of the skies so they could run package delivery with drones, hrm? If it truly was a safety thing they would have no horse in the race and would not care one iota.

Let's not forget about slope glider flying too, none of those planes would even have the option to comply with RID, due to the requirements. And, I'm not aware of any AMA clubs that are slope flying sites. I learned so much about flying, back in the early 2000's, flying slope gliders over the Susquehanna River in PA. It will be sad times if this ruling doesn't have a major overhaul!

This hobby has changed my life, my son and I have recently bonded while learning about RC Planes and Planes and Aviation in general. We respect that this is a hobby that has common sense safety applications while in use. We are able to have fun with a limited budget. Changes due to regulations make no sense and in such case would take the hobby away from us or make it so expensive and heavily regulated that it takes from the experience.

@Sasha Kruse Grim I linked the proposal in another thread and the pertinent exceptions. But, basically the laws aren't changing much except to put ID equipment on larger craft (those over 250g)when not flown at AMA sanctioned airfields. OK what would you call hoping expecting or having faith that they won't be strictly enforcing this on the rest of us.. But only on amazon etc.? Sure sounds a lot like trust to me. I'm fortunate enough to have a small 6 acre farm to fly at, but not everyone does, and if they can log into an app on their phone and designate the park or soccer field as a flight site for 2-3 hours or however long, would be great for all sides. Compliance would be easily accomplished, and the FAA would meet their mandate for information without unnecessary or burdensome costs like the ones you outlined for dues, travel, insurance etc for the too few, over crowded, and expensive AMA flight clubs.

Hats off to you guys from the UK. So far we in the UK have got away with these regulations comparatively lightly. I put this down in part to the response to the the Government by model flyers and in the main by our BMFA working together with the CAA. The result is that whilst, yes we are regulated, BMFA members are currently exempt form a lot of the restrictions of non members. So far, we have no Geo tagging but do have exclusion areas, mainly around Airports and Built Up Areas. Under 250g you are still free to fly where ever. Keep up the good work!

I just wanted to thank you for what I have seen to be an effective campaign of messaging, education, lobbying and community rallying calls. I hope the FAA is both listening, understanding and are willing to stand up to what I imagine are powerful political and commercial lobbying groups.
Like most people who are passionate about all the dimensions of the aviation world I recognize that the FAA is a force for good - but desperately needs help, from all quarters. I hope yours, and other approaches, were able to remind them that we, as a diverse group, can help them in a material way.
NOTE: I am sure you have probably recognized that with the current enormous scope of the definition of a 'UAS' - the FAA have created a massive and diverse group of A/C and Operating conditions to be managed and "integrated". I have got to be believe by subdividing this UAS group, applying suitable RISK / IMPACT assessment for each sub group ( and ignoring not the media hyperbole / distortion) the FAA would have more flexibility to treat ours/ other causes with more understanding / latitude AND would stand a better chance of keeping the community on their side!
Love the passion and the energy,
    Thanks guys,
    Martin

Last year I built one of those Walmart glider conversions and I had an absolute blast with it and my flying spot is right across the street in a big field next to the elementary school (The kids aren't allowed to go on that field because it isn't a part of the playground) but one day the principal was out with the kids and he saw me flying. He came over and brought a whole gaggle of elementary kids over and they just loved my plane. I was there doing barrel rolls, loop D Loop's, inverted flying, and low level passes, the excitement from the kids was one of the purest things I ever felt. After I landed all the kids were looking at the plane and asking questions about what each part did and what was so special about it/ what its functions were (so many questions) and I noticed as I was walking away they were running back to the playground with their arms out pretending to be airplanes. Makes me wonder how many of them will want to fly RC, or even become pilots just off of what they saw that day.

You guys represent the crux of the RC hobby. To see what you've accomplished, and the number of people you've affected, is to understand very clearly how devastating it would be to see the rules represented in the NPRM be adopted as currently proposed. I hope they listen to you and come to their senses.

Thanks so much to all of you at Flite Test and guys like Rich Baker, Chris, the RC Geek and many others to name a few that have stepped up to try and get the FAA to rethink these regulations which will destroy this great hobby so many have come to love over nearly a century of Areo modeling and flying. PLEASE....EVERYONE WHO LOVES THIS GREAT HOBBY....reach out to the FAA and let your voice be heard, these guys can’t do it all, every voice counts!!!! Lets keep this great hobby alive and growing for everyone to enjoy. Thank you.

    my comment
    Dear FAA NPRM Team
I'm 40 years of age and have had a life long association with the hobby and spent untold hours learning aerodynamics and other related sciences from it. I have worked extensively in manufacturing of remote controlled airships to include camera and payload types, as well as advertising types ...many you may have seen flying indoors at major sporting & music events like the ducks and the LA kings, Beatles ,led zepplin and more.
As boy with the hobby and the wonderful freedom that flight gives the first project i built with my father was a rubber band powered plane with white glue and balsa wood,...weeks to build, flew that in the front yard like a million times.
Then on to gas powered planes on a string control handle, this got real hands on with dad ... flew that about 20 times till the motor wore out, did this in the local baseball diamond. no one ever got hurt.
Next was hand built 6' balsa and tissue rc glider, took months of paper plans, glue, balsa and measuring and cutting, I hand launch ed this as hard as could be at our local small school yard, flew that first r/c in circles there many times over 3-4 summers safely with friends. i was 7 when it was built
Then for my state report in 5th grade, i got the principle of my elementary school let me launch my hand built rocket in front of the whole school of 300 or so kids. after i demonstrated to him that i taught myself and understood all the aerodynamics involved... i picked Utah out of the hat, they tested rockets there in Utah...flew that rocket at the local grammar school from my home built launch pad ... principle smiled ....he did so safely....
next was my teens and my 40 size rc trainer glow engine plane.. safely flew that at a construction lot down the street on the weekends. I gained 4 channel flight experience and the appreciation for the inner workings of gas motors too.
At little older and i found some great memory's with friends & my uncles enjoying the hobby ,I built them a huge p-51 mustang .. it dropped flour bombs...really wowed a crowd. But, with this big guy also went AMA fees and i had to pay yearly due at a local field. everything already cost so much after all the expense we could only fly it a few times a year. after a while i begun to missed the progression of my aerodynamically learning ...
My professional life i got hired into big advertising, we did giant inflatables. I took over all helium flying stuff. I used my aerodynamic experience and sciences to make giant flying r/c airships. i made impacts on millions of peoples faces, planting a seed of love for aviation and all things that fly in our youth along the way. my list goes on, but all my wonder and freedom to explore sciences and technology keep bringing me back to this hobby.
Professionally we easily flew over the top of 30,000 seated people every flight, multiple times a night ,some times with 2 airships at the same time... and more than 1 pro team at the same time. exposing up to 100,000 people to r/c flight in one evening. we had not one problem or issue , not one person hurt ever. i did answer lots of happy questions from little boys and girls..
the current NPRM will flatten all the inroads young and economically challenged have at gaining these experiences i have been lucky enough to have.
    1. carrying the cost penalty on our wallets and weight burden on our aircraft will destroy the hobby flat out smack down
    2. the current trend of government normalizing the gathering of our data is not ok , furthermore having this data being actively made available to other agency's or the public with out expressed written consent i.e warrant is also a no go ,not ok at all move.
creating a uas airspace above the 400' mark this space would require commercial drones to have to carry the advanced tracking and advanced control.. (this class of airspace would be like the freeway for drones) with set departure ramps/and on ramps...
Thus allowing under 400' to remain as is with no changes for the hobby except that r/c hobbyist give way to commercial drones as well as manned aircraft such as helicopters already, but do this for commercial drones too.
please utilize phone apps that can just be turned on or off when the flight is done... hobby people are more than happy to let you know when they are flying with an app. but we do not want to go buy limited and or heavy/expensive gear and carry that around on our craft.
Our hobby has spawned so many of the latest advancements and i hope the FAA would want to encourage it to grow.
please FAA be a driving force in helping our country lead the world allowing us to experiment build and fly
Please FAA bring manufacturing back to the USA by ushering in a new era of love for aviation and aviation creation manufacturing and flying by rewarding the hobbyist
Stunting the growth of aviation and possibly growth of USA uas industry in this new era of micro aviation is possible with this NPRM

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness " is a well-known phrase in the United States Declaration of Independence. The phrase gives three examples of the "unalienable rights" which the Declaration says have been given to all humans by their creator, and which governments are created to protect.

As a commercial/instrument rated helicopter pilot, RC aircraft location is very valuable information to help avoid collisions. Helicopters often operate at low altitudes away from airport locations, so the chance of a collision with RC aircraft is higher than for most fixed wing aircraft. If the suggestion in the comment info about an app based solution were to be implemented, there could possibly be benefits for manned aircraft pilots and RC pilots at the same time. If RC pilots would use an app to log their location and intended altitude range for their flight just before launch, maybe a way could be engineered to get that info into the ADS-B system that manned aircraft are required to have onboard. The RC aircraft could be shown on the cockpit display as another aircraft that is a hazard. It might also be possible to have the app alert the RC pilots of nearby manned aircraft operations, or flight restrictions based on their location (class of airspace, TFR, etc...). Thanks Flite Test for representing us in your interaction with the FAA.

Your points touched pretty much all the same bullets I listed in my letter to the FAA. But because I fly FPV quads, I could only address the fixed wing and rotor wing flyers from the perspective of someone who could related to their situation. The same goes for the STEM programs. Even though I have no kids or know any STEM teachers, I felt it still needed to be said. However, color me skeptical but I don't see the FAA really being all that concerned about the financial hardships of us hobbyists when it comes to having to drive long distances to a fixed site or having to pay membership dues. I live in very congested southern California about 20 miles south of LA. The only two fixed sites are over an hour away. One of them has an area for drones but I think it's just racing. There are small parks around my area where I can fly but that's generally during the week if I take off of work. Parks on the weekends are crazy packed. Except for one that takes about 45 mins to get to. That one is always a good spot to fly.

Amazon is likely the biggest push behind this as they are considering drone delivery, and it is to their advantage to dominate the drone air space, and keep it all to themselves. So far I have seen no compelling evidence that there is any real issue to their claims of danger. By the numbers, the model and drone flying hobby has been the safest activity even related to this, how many deaths have you heard of due to someone flying a model plane, this whole thing is a bunch of BS for some giant corporation to buy government intervention to eliminate the rights of all the individuals.

NOT EVERYBODY HAS A SMART PHONE! I really wish people would realize that just because the people YOU know have smart phones, that not everyone has them. In our area a smart phone cannot get any signal, and we certainly cannot afford the monthly cost of one especially when we can't even use it. Not everybody lives in a big city, the largest portion of land has NO cities, and services can be extremely limited in rural areas which cover the MAJORITY of the USA. These regulations have a certain absurdity to them considering it would basically eliminate the majority of the land mass in the USA and the fact is people live out there, there is NO land in the USA that is not owned, but to eliminate the majority of it is just absurd especially considering that the model flight hobby is already the safest thing even related to the airspace. Where my property is there are no real services, no DSL, no cable, no fios, no xfinity, no nothing, and those coverage maps that the cell phone companies provide are a joke and do not even come close to the reality. I get to use a computer in the nearest city about 30 miles away and that is because it is a business that has to pay the ridiculous cost of satellite internet that most people out here cannot afford [other than the fact it is mostly slow and useless, especially for video]. Consider how many people will be eliminated just because you are unaware of their existence just because they are not on the internet, the premise of this whole thing is ridiculous and absurd as it clearly is not considering the hobby use of the largest amount of land in the USA.

    Thoughts:
For the limited class, it's not only the cost and weight of flight controllers, GPS units and such. You also need to be able to program them correctly. They are not just plug and play and if used incorrectly, they might result in uncontrolled flyaways.
LAANC has a problem if you don't have cell coverage or Wifi around.
A lot of the regulations and suggested solutions are very problematic for international visitors like me.

It is along the same mindset that brought us the full-scale ADSB system. In standard category full-scale planes it is mandatory to have a full time broadcast ID system. In that context it makes sense for a mutually displayed ATC readout on each-plane's screen(if equipped.) In models it makes no sense. Unless you are at the base of a runway to an airport an RC plane will not threaten any manned aircraft.

Wow! What a very well thought out synopsis and solution. Surely this presentation took quite a while to put together as meaningful as it is. Thank you so much for being a huge advocate to the model aviation community!!!!

I am a real pilot, I have enjoyed model aviation for over 60 years. The FAA has been apart of my life and has NEVER impacted my enjoyment of model aviation. Regulation is a part of life. Because of the technology advancements far beyond sight and fly, something has be done to rein in the hobby.

I hope you didn't say you are okay with tracking or anything else that doesn't make anybody safe.
