I’d REALLY love to see KIT models make a comeback. There was so much pride in flying the plane you just built.
You can still by model kits. I bought a some online. First time building a model, with only a sketchy instruction manual wasn’t ideal. Disaster on maiden flight. Next I sourced the simplest build I could find. I tried to not make the same mistakes, it’s small but flies well. It seems that I am a bit of a rarity, because I fly something I built. There are two more kits in the shed, maybe one day.
I'd say we are in the middle of a kit comeback. Thanks to affordable CNC machines there are plenty high quality kits out there. And at least in regards to gliders they are actually quite popular.

Started flying U control in 1963 and RC in 1972 building from wood kits are not for the general RC population. It's unfortunate, but given the cost, but mainly the time it's tough unless someone wants a unique plane. For those into scratch building, they are in a world all their own.
If I still had to build a plane from a kit, I wouldn’t be back in the hobby. Dad was an aeromodeller from the ‘30’s. Stick built rubber powered, gas powered free flight, glow powered control line all the way to single channel RC in the 50s to proportional RC in the 60s and was active until the 90’s. So I guess I was born into the hobby, started building balsa controlline model kits in ‘66, to scratch building RC from balsa, even fibreglass and foam by 69. Family and business got in the way until in 2012, rediscovered RC when a friend mentioned he flew electric planes. What? Anyways we met up at the park, he showed me how it was done but the wind was too much for the tiny Champ he couldn’t keep it in the air. Yet the tiny champ held togethe. He let me fly his little Champ in the somewhat strong wind, we were both surprised I didn’t crash the plane in 4 batteries. Next day I bought my own supercub at the hobby shop and the rest as they say is history. Fast forward , today I’ve got a dozen foam and balsa planes in various states or airworthiness, plus another 30 foam kits and PNPs and balsa ARFs still in boxes. BUT if I had to build balsa from kits or scratch again, I wouldn’t have returned to the hobby. I prefer to fly in the little spare time I have.
The hobby used to include kit and scratch building. ARFs and foamys didn't exist. Building a simple plane as a group so everyone goes home with a plane and building skills and a large dose of understanding. It's a great way to make lots of friends.
This hobby has builders and flyers amongst other types... Foamies are amazing tools for flyers and they offer a super fast entry into the hobby... I am glad that foamies are around, they offer so much space for creative improvement and playing while keeping the initial complexity low...

The point I was trying to make is that there was a lot of sharing of information and techniques through first-hand meetings and demonstrations. A lot of it wasn't in books and there wasn't the internet. I'm 63. I've seen and done many things in free flight, control line, RC, and even model rocketry. I know how to cut foam wings and covered them in balsa and fiberglass. I've built simple control line combat planes. All of this is on the verge of being lost to time. All of it pertains to RC flying. Have you ever used sewing thread to make a control surface hinge? Tissue and dope covering is all but gone. Silk and dope is the same. Silk makes a tough wing. Whatever. I'm a dinosaur. I just remember what the past was like and I'd love to have it all back.
I remember being in my parents basement building with a rotory dial phone beside me waiting for club members to call so we could talk about what kit we were building or modifying. I miss that

I hear you. I'm also 63, been flying RC since 1976. Back then, we built our models - mostly from kits, granted, but often enough from magazine plans (I still have issues of "Radio Control Modeler", "RCM &E" and similar magazines). Much of this is being lost.

My workshop is a shrine to my ADD. I have half finished kits my parents gave me before I left home in 1979. And I still have plans to finish them.
Man I remember the days of trying to explain the difference between a “drone” and a miniquad. The raw culture shock the world had in trying to understand stuff the experts in the craft have been screaming about for years

Every RC helicopter event ive been to (which is a lot) at a minimum a lot of fun with some being described as epic. The flying is incredible and the people are awesome. Last weekend at an event i had a bad allergic reaction to some food which got me a non life threatening but needed trip to the ER by ambulance to ensure it didn't get worse. The way i was treated while waiting for the ambulance and back at the event after being released from the hospital proved how great the people in this hobby are.
It goes the same with R/C cars as well: Build, break, build it better (upgrades) and repeat.😉

Number 9 struck a cord with me. I have planes stashed all over the basement. The only harmful thing I’ve seen dropped from one of our “drones” is candy or a little plastic man with a parachute. It is truly sad to see the hobby slowly going to shit. Once they lumped rc planes and gps drones together it was over. I know I say the same thing every week but your videos are always 100% spot on and hilarious! 👍🏻👍🏻

No kidding. I have one foamy that I learned on, and have no clue where I stuck it, all the rest are hand built works of art (at least to me :)) What I fly are Radio Controlled Scale Models, call it a drone and get knocked on the ass!

Dude guys, you need to build a Flite Test Sea Duck and review it. I have many many planes and it is by far my most favorite. I'm planning to flaperon my Sea Duck, but it honestly doesn't need it. Please do it! You won't regret it! With the way you guys fly, that plane is 100% something you would absolutely love with all of your heart!!

I’m just a wuadcopter pilot but I love these videos! It seems like the same passion. Plus, y’all have interesting and different problems and solutions than with wings than quads.
I was getting a bit bored of rc I was looking through eBay one night and bought an old model plane diesel engine on a whim I absolutely loved it and bought about 10 more that reignited my passion for RC again🙂
Please do a video of your diesel engine and plane - even if it 30 secs o what you bought. I love to see what deals other people have got. My buddy and I spent hours trying to get a diesel engine to run properly. I could never work out the needle valve to compression relationship. The only help we had was this line from the Enya operating instructions: "Once the engine starts, gradually adjust both the needle valve and compression screw till the engine runs smoothly".
@@christopherknee5756 hi diesels are funny little things it takes a while to get used to them my first diesel sadly broke the Con-rod snapped😬 but I’ve got a few videos on my page of me running them. Hopefully you get a basic understanding. I tend to start by screwing the needle in 1 1/2 turns and then I slowly increased compression while flicking until I hear it fire, and then just fiddle around with the compression in that realm, of where it’s firing for a bit and it should start. Obviously do all of that after priming it and maybe squirt some fuel in the exhaust. But there’s only so many settings you can put in a diesel. One of them is bound to be right. 😂
Drone by definition is an unmanned aircraft regardless of shape or configuration. In fact, the first drones and most current military drones are winged and resemble planes. UAS = Unmanned (drone) Aerial System (piloted remotely). Many unknowledgeable folks mistakenly believe that a quadcopter (the true name) of what they see is the only type of drone and often reference "drone" when they really mean quadcopter. More interesting is the why model airplane folks don't say my drone airplane or my airplane drone.

These points are all spot on. My workbench is a mess, I also have planes in every room of my house. A guy several years ago showed up with a piece of diamond plate on the top of the fuse and expanding foam in a wing after some crashes... it STILL flew.

Flying planes is great, don’t try to tell me it’s easier though because we all know the truth about that. More power to ya that you guys can handle wings, I wish I could, but it’s a lot harder.
Absolutely correct. Unless it has doohicky auto gyros that level the plane and keep it flying on it's own, which are called trainers, then you need hands on sticks at all times. None of my Radio Controlled Scale Model Aircraft can land themselves. Especially not the twin engine gas powered B-25!

I’m in the uk so I’m not sure how this works 100% but from what I understand if a plane is under 250g UMX is an example then you are exempt from restrictions, unless the land such as a public park states no rc models.
I’m talking specifically about the Hobbyzone Cub S2 and e-flites latest turbo timber evolution, both models I have but as yet only flown on simulator. As far as I see it, if you have permission on private ground or it’s well away from Joe Public you’re ok. Remember I don’t have any camera, nor have any reason to record from the air so what’s the status have of now. It would be interesting to see how the USA differ from the uk on this. Regards Dave
Even with a Remote ID module, you still have to get LAANC clearance BEFORE you can fly in ANY controlled airspace. National Parks and monuments are No Fly zones and most apps show this. National Forests, on the other hand, are open unless there is some other restriction.
Regardless, the flight must still be within visual line of sight to be in compliance with FAA regulations for both Part 107 and Recreational.

I tell you true. I live in Great Barrington Mass and it sure gets old flying alone.
I think media uses the term "drone" for rc planes, helicopters and quads because most people would not be familiar with the term "UAV", which all of these are. Idk about the american rules, but here in Europe they both have the same rules applied and also include specific rules when you add a camera or other sensor equipment (like microphones) to your device. But one thing i can understand is this: Whether a 4 kg drone crashes onto a person or a 4kg plane doesn't really matter. We don't have this ID thing yet, but honestly, i don't really know what's the fuzz about it. If my drone would need to have a remote id, so what? 99% of the people give no fuck about your drone, as long as you don't fly above their heads or their property. And doing so is bad mannered imo.
I used to fly a little bit of RC planes when I was a kid but money wasn't on my side so I couldn't keep doing it. now that i'm older I can absolutely do it and what interest me more than anything else is FPV.
so to take a first step into the hobby of RC that is in the air did I buy a small drone to get used to the FPV aspect and I'm right now just trying to figure out what to buy for my first FPV plane.
so if anyone have a suggestion on where to start would I love to hear it

8:20 I engineered my own butane lighter out of a big syringe and a few other parts and an undisclosed tech special 0.10$ diy jerryrigged nozzle patent pending (not recommended, non-zero chance of detonation, injury and/or death occuring exists). My cheap lighters all broke one day and i rrrly wanted to smoke so i transplanted some gas from a broken one to an old empty one with a syringe in a secret way using secret seals (again detonation hazard dont @ me with your lawyer when you blow your fingers and face and eyes off, just dont try this at all) and that barely worked and lead me to engineering the syringe lighter and that whole project truly reignited my passion for smoking. And pyromania.
I would like details on how to put things together and the names. Most videos is a $500+ factory built thing we focus on. I built a prop thing and my BEC/ESC/Motor work well with a Raspberry Pi Pico sending PWM signals to the BEC like a throttle tester. That's 1/10th of "something" and my first idea is to try it on an RC truck (extra momentum with a prop) and have that specific throttle automated from the other parts. Those have different electronics (not a big issue for me.) It's just complicated before we buy more and try some things. Then we can read on what we bought that it's a BEC/ESC and so on.

my aroscout has crashed a few times being im a smooth brain and i always have it on begginner so i cant pull up when landing or in a decline and this has lead to majority it has hit a bench by being too low i hit a curb doign an egg drop test because why not and every time only the landing gear had broken or the nos ehas been a little damaged its even flown into tall grass and stopped almost instantly and its still ok to fly right now and the landing gear (front gear only) is perfectly fine other than about 2 inches of hot glue :)

I was going to fly my plane at a park but we are kind of close to an airport I wanted to know wether I could fly it there or not, planes don’t fly over the park so I just wanted to know.
I'd like to do fpv flying, that would be a great hobby, I haven't even looked into it because I saw you criticizing drone racing on your channel awhile ago and I think it's heavily regulated and too much hassle to be worth it. You mentioned it in this video though, if you want a topic for a future video it would be a good one, what's a good starting point and what to watch out for.

Some years ago congress mandate that the FAA create a separate section specifically for Unmanned Aircraft (drones) and Unmanned Aerial Systems (controlled by remote pilot). The FAA defines an aircraft as any craft that can maintain flight regardless of shape, configuration, lift mechanism, or propulsion. It can be a plane, a wing, a quadcopter, a helicopter, an Ornithopter or even a dirigible (if you could make that work). It just confuses me why model aircraft folks didn't think they were flying a drone.
The difference between drones and RC aircraft is the “remote” pilot. A drone can be any type of aircraft, (Rocket, plane, copter, or balloon)! It moves autonomously, or with the operator using the control to give directions and the onboard computer working to keep the drone airborne.
If you ever see a competent drone operator attempting to fly a RC aircraft for.the first time, you will understand the difference.
@@koalatails5711 You must be referring to the DJI products. The FPV quads that I fly are NOT autonomous, they don't fly themselves. If you don't fly them, they crash. In fact, most people can NOT fly them without a lot of simulator time or a whole lot of crashing. Also, the planes could be autonomous if someone wanted to bother to develop the software. Not a big deal, just no one has bothered with it. Still, it doesn't matter. All UNMANNED (no pilot on board the craft) are drones, period, no question about it. Even the "autonomous" flights are not purely autonomous. Some one (pilot) has to program the flight and is also at the transmitter to take control if needed. Also, manned aircraft are also flown with autopilot. Although not quite autonomous, the craft is still manned aircraft.
@@koalatails5711 By the way, ever try to fly an RC helicopter? Maybe a 700 series. Yeah, those things are NOT autonomous and certainly do NOT fly themselves. The DJI "camera" quads are a specific niche within the drone category just as FPV quads, RC planes, RC helicopters, tri-copters, octocopters, or any other specific configuration of unmanned aircraft (drone).

@@buddyadkins2432 Someone did bother to program the software for autonomous fixed wing aircraft. I remember seeing them in a department store, I believe the amount of skills required to use them is similar to the skill required to operate DJI products. (Not really the point)

Model plane flying has been around for over fifty years. I do know a few people that were flying models back in the early days and still enjoy the hobby. They’re not going to call their scale replica B-17 or DR-1 a drone.
Occasionally people come to the club just to watch us fly our models. A common question they ask is, “Do you allow drones to fly here too”?
So it is a common misconception that “drone” refers only to multi-rotor devices.

Very Interesting Video. Good Job. From what I have seen, one of the most violated regulations (especially by FPV pilots) is that of flying beyond visual line of sight, if you can't see the craft well enough to pilot it home should the video fail, it is beyond visual line of sight. Also, all FPV flights require a co-located (right next to the pilot) visual observer to watch and provide that visual line of sight reference for the pilot.
I study crime in the United States and of all "violations" happening on a daily basis, FPV flying is not what any government agency needs to be worried about enforcing right now.
I feel the LOS rule is one of those rules the FPV pilots got saddled with as a legacy rule. As long as you fly somwhere where there are no other aircraft (not as in not expected, but as: there is no way for even a paraglider to be here) it should be perfectly safe.
A weirder one is the safe distance around the craft. The advantage of a quad is that, unlike a plane, it can just drop without flying a unpredictable distance before coming down (assuming you lose control signal). So you only ever need something like ~100/200m (speed + ppl being idiots and getting to close) to be safe. You also don't have to be afraid of doing because, as long as it doesn't drop on rocks, it won't be damaged.
@@someonespotatohmm9513 The rationale for keeping VLOS in or rather just not exempting FPV or any other for that matter is the following: If the craft is beyond what you can see well enough to manually fly it back should the video (and failsafe or waypoint) fail, then the pilot needs to be able to see the craft, know the orientation, and fly it back. Otherwise, it falls (at some point) uncontrollably and could possibly damage or hurt something. Yeah, we think it is small and couldn't hurt anything, but that is why it is in there.
FPV vision by itself is not sufficient for proper "see and avoid" concept. Basically, Congress and hence the FAA does NOT want FPV UAS (drones) flying around everywhere without being monitored and controlled. Oh yeah, neither does DHS.
Long distance UAS flights were never in the offering. That said, the 2023 LAW contains language for Beyond Visual Line of Sight with a waiver IF the UAV (drone) has Network Remote ID and is continually logged into the UTM and can be monitored by the FAA (or DHS).
Also, keep in mind it is Congress that sets the specifications for the regulations which the FAA implements to effect, execute, and enforce the LAW. The current law is
PUBLIC LAW 115-254-OCT. 5, 2018 which will be replaced by the 2023 LAW once passed.

@@buddyadkins2432 No, just general rules. I don't know the exact US ones but know the EU ones and they, as far as I know, are largely the same. Remote ID for self build vehicals is the exception, but we do need to register and have a sticker on it though. O yea and we need to pass some exam, which lets be honest, is a good idea.
I should have been clearer what I think is weird about not allowing FPV. I was refering to situations you are flying over an area that you can observe from your takeoff position and is free of targets (things you can damage). A control link, like the video link, can "just" stop working, so I always fly such that I can lose it and be sure not to hit anything.
From what I know the argument against FPV is that it reduces your situational awarens. But for ground targets I am sure that trough the gogles I am more aware of what is around the craft and the area I am flying in, than I am standing some distance away looking at the craft and not the surroundings.
For other flying objects I am quite sure the opposite is true. Which I think is what the lack of "see and avoid" principles refers to. But given the locations where quadcopters can be flown (like a forest), there are quite some situations where it is simply imposible for other manned aircraft to be present. Making the principle kind of useless.
I am aware that there are quite some locations where manned aircraft are not expected but present, which is why i specified the "not even paragliders". Maybe I trust ppl to much to accurately asses where other manned aircraft might be present :/.
If you do beyond vlos or waypoint flying I see the reasoning behind Network Remote ID.

the minimum that you can spend as a beginner is about $350 for a plane with SAFE technology like the hobbizone carbon cub. And then you are going to spend another $100 for new wings and fuselage when the existing ones are too full of epoxy.
It's not expensive, but it's not free either

Looking forward to your cube loading video - thank you for giving theoretical competence a fighting chance on TH-cam, where understanding is all too often portrayed as the opposite of fun! Your videos are the clou of my week, which says quite a lot, as I know exactly how to cram the maximum amount of fun into my life. Great work.
