Tips on scoring permission to metal detect private land potentially loaded with coins & relics- the approach, breaking the ice, gaining trust, do's & dont's.
I always give the prospective sites homeowner a card I have that gives them all my contact information and also says on the back what I do. I also tell them to keep my card, even if they tell me I cannot hunt their property, in the event that they lose something and I will try to find it for them free of charge. Also for the folks that have allowed me to hunt their property on many occasions, I get them a card around the holidays and write a line or two of appreciation in it and give them a gift card to a local department store or such. They usually give me unlimited access after that gesture. One hand washes the other and a little appreciation goes a long way.
Someone I know once advised to ask the homeowner if they had ever lost a ring or any other jewelry in the yard…. If they say no then that should mean any rings or other jewelry you find is finders keepers! Lol!
Getting permissions is tough, but not as tough as explaining to the chief why you are 15 minutes late to muster after a night on the town! And being the chief, I heard a lot of comical excuses! Thanks for your service and sharing the good advice. Go Navy!
Good info there Jim. Your Seabee shirt reminds me of when I was down in Honduras. Spent a month living in a tent on the beach. DURING MONSOON SEASON! Some Seabees set up all the tents we were in and set up the shower tent and such.
Hahahaha nice plug with the LGB! Good advice Jim! Hope this helps out some newbies and even some people like me that don’t feel comfortable knocking on doors
I once had a permission but the home owner said they get to keep everything that I may find. I said no, it’s 50/50. They said no to that. So I said goodbye 👋.
I would have walked away too. Homeowners often forget that we spend a lot of money on our equipment and it's wear and tear on our bodies finding the objects as well.
good ideas but how do you handle the homeowners that say sure you can metal detect my property just dont dig any holes. iev had that happen a few times
In cases like that I would use a screw driver or a coin probe like I showed in my video about hand tools. I guess it would depend upon the tone of voice the homeowner said that in!
Most folks think of gold when they hear about metal detecting such as jewelry. I like to hit coins myself, so I tell them any jewelry I find is theirs to keep. I downplay the value of the coins by saying "My wife thinks I'm crazy because I get excited when I come home with a rusty old penny or corroded dime ". This actually worked great for the first permission I got. Another thing that I like to do is by a couple of $20 gift cards for a home improvement store and bring them with me to give the homeowner as a thank-you. Another thing you can do is bring a few less desirable coins with you to give the homeowner in case you don't find much. Thanks for asking & thank you for your service Brother!
