Even if conditions are right there are still so many variables why a field seems dead . One thing I find is hot ground , yes literally where the sun has dried out the soil during a long summer , the ground is super porous and conductivity or ground penetration is a fraction of winter conditions . It is probably in these conditions just after harvest is when new permissions are gained and tried for the first time and probably the worst time., One way to improve your chances is to detect the said field in the early morning before the sun is fully up and the dew is still heavy on the ground , you would be amazed at the difference , I have done this many times , and to prove the point ,as the dew lifts and the ground is bone dry again and the sun is fully up ,the signals nearly all but stop coming in .Also the last couple of hours into sunset are much better as the ground rapidly cools , to be honest nowadays I rarely detect in the heat of a summers day as I find the ground is totally unproductive for the said reason , and if you try a new permission under those summer dry conditions two or three times and as I predict you will find naff as a rule, then it is not surprising people write of a field under those circumstances.
A permission I share with 4 other lads has a very productive spot producing saxon coins ,hammered and some stunning artefacts , we had all , gone over this very small area dozens of times each , all swearing there was not a signal left . Sure enough I went back to that same area for another search and bang in the middle of matted footprints , mine as well lol, right on the surface I had a cracking signal and uncovered a stunning gold medieval stirrup ring ,set with a emerald and unusually for a stirrup ring the shoulders had raised floral designs on them . I have just received the ring back from PAS disclaimed treasure and will be selling it to honour 50-50 agreement with the farmer . As you said Graham never give on a field , whether a new or old permission..As you said in answer to one of the comments it is hard to juggle the permission balls , reminds me of a saying buy a old sage who said, when juggling six balls and trying to keep them in the air , always remember , two of them are yours …….lol...……...Ray

I have a couple of permissions and the farmers have said they’ve had people detect them before and yet I’ve found loads of coins and even a hammered on them. Don’t be disappointed if a farmer says this as some folk just don’t have any patience. Good video Graeme 👍🏻

Great advice! . I have a 100 acres of farm in southern New Jersey that dates back to the mid 1700s. I have been there 4 times. The last time after it was plowed. I haven't found anything. My wife wants me to give up on it because its an hour drive from my house. After listening to your advice, I am going to keep trying and not give up. Thanks

Really excellent advice... Patience, dogged patience, usually rewards in the end. Also an awareness of where field workers in olden times may have sheltered from the elements to work on hedges, to eat, rest their horses, or simply to get out of the driving rain/ Nor' Easterly gales etc for a while, many years before the luxuries of covered farm vehicles. Maybe learn to hunt in All Metal in the woods for extra depth: again; patience . Damned good incentive boosting video Graeme. Hope all good with you.

The other thing is as well. When someone gets a permission goes there a couple of times then stop going, then when another keen detectorist knocks for permission the answer is, no ! We already have someone that comes here. So I always ask when was the last time they came also just a tip ask on pick your own places they don’t mind strangers walking around their land and lastly farms that sell produce at the gate or farmhouse because they don’t mind people knocking even buy something. Thanks for the advice.

Very true words one permission I have got has been done before. But one field is huge I am sure they have not cleared all the good stuff so I keep at this one field digging every signal even when I am sure it will be iron. If nothing else It’s fresh air and good exercise and most of the time my boys come to so for me it’s a win win and I am sure my persistence will pay off. HH ATB Paul

Great video and advice .. totally agree Graeme, I've been doing my farms for many years, some fields are very quiet, which I only tend to do when I haven't got much choice, other fields produce different items on the turn of the plough, I just never give up, year after year and am still getting rewarded 😊 .. best wishes and HH Tina
