When I was a kid I learned to check grassy areas like parks and wide grassy boulevards near bars on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Drunk people often end up in the grass and they lose things out of their pockets. Didn’t even need a metal detector lol
Great information. We're definitely on the same wavelength on everything. Another thing to add to the garage sales is estate sales. They're amazing for permissions. Most of the time, the family is getting rid of the house and they don't care if you go around and dig holes in the yard. I get more Yes's than No's from them. The problem is asking as estate sale that the family is at, not run by an estate sale company. They won't know if the owner will give you permission and won't ask the home owner for you. I usually go with the tactic of saying "Hey, I do metal detecting as a hobby and would love to help you find anything precious that was lost before you get rid of the house". Almost always they say that nothing was lost, but sure go ahead and detect if you want. Almost always you have to be willing to do it while the sale is open , because they want to have the sale and leave, not stay around and watch over you. Sometimes they'll give me another time to stop by when they're going to be back at the house. HH Matt

I have had trouble looking around carwashes. Had one old lady get mad because I picked up a penny lying on the ground. So I gave her the damn penny. At another carwash I was walking through the vacuum area on my way to a store and saw a few coins and had police come up asking me about break ins. Yes they tried to accuse an old lady of burglarizing a car wash. I have no idea how to burglar a place! In the few minutes I was there a group of 6 police officers were asking me about break ins. It was insulting and ridiculous. It's not like the area is hidden. I was right out in the open and I never go near any of the vacuums or anything people put money in. The car wash was closed and it was early in the night. And I pick up any trash and put it in the garbage cans. There was a nearby car wash where no one cared if you looked around. Found some interesting stuff. One time I found a poor little guinea pig running around in terror. The aquarium he had been kept in was smashed when it was thrown in the dumpster. I found a home for him. Found a lot of coins. And since I had 4 kids, finding dishes and glasses that people had thrown away while cleaning out their car was quite handy for me. We went through a lot of glasses and dishes with these kids. It was fun. I did get yelled at for picking up a penny in the parking lot of a Sonics. The manager said it was her money. I didn't give her the penny.
Great information , I live deep in the hills of Vermont,it's very difficult to find good spots that haven't been completely pounded, I still find some cool stuff hidden in the hollows, but without a good permissions, I have to hike way out in the hills... permissions are everything, and yes I stop at every old home yard sale I can ,buy something then ask for permission,,I also do carpentry on old houses and ask and offer up all finds to the land owner.
Hey Jim….. basketball courts have been my cash cow. This small park by my house m, it has only one court, grass on all 4 sides. That one court has payed out over $300 in clad , and some nice jewelry all in a 1 year time period. I’m in NY so from January until the snow melts I don’t hunt that park. I hit the courts in the early morning. Happy Hunting brother
Yep found a 500 ring my last hunt of 2022 on soccer field but it was right in center were game starts. Live in the country where there are even less sites. Found several of you ideas helpful

Another spot is carnival fields like shooting stands etc. Also where the city pile up the snow they plow. A lot of trash there though. Some cities dump in water so If you underwater detect those spots are loaded on the bottom.
Some great ideas! The snow one I've been doing for years. I like going to parking lots in the late winter when the big piles start melting & eyeballing the coins along the edge. I call it "snow banking ". Thanks for watching!
Another good thing to look for is PARADE ROUTES! Alot of curbs around your town/city you may not think of will turn out to have hundreds of people and children on them multiple times a year
I do the garage sale thing too. you better get out in that water . you will find more jelwery in a week water hunting then a year of digging. my first water hunt of the year was last week had about 30 good find maybe five pieces of trash. 7 rings 2 are gold.
@freedomdiggersmetaldetecti8964 I don't tend to use one in water . just listen for the double beep with a shot sweep over the target . I basicly isolate the target to where I know it's uner my coil then I place my foot behind my coil or shaft to mark that spot and scoop infront of my foot 80% of the time you will get it on the first scoop if not it becomes a slightly more difficult to retrieve target especially if it's very small and it can fall threw the scoop. I do carry a carrot and I use it in the sand or if I'm in shallow enough water that I can bend down and locate a smaller item that might have slipped threw the scoop.
I thought about some of those places that you mentioned. I just never got around to it. No way I’m doing a bus stop. I’m a city bus driver. I want nothing to do with bud stops. 😆
Awesome Tip! I’m just over $300 in clad ytd so far. Just recently pulled out a 1798 draped bust large cent in a random grass strip adjacent to a main road near a historic mill. I just started documenting my finds check it out.
Clothes line is a good one. If I see one that’s where I wanna start first I live right at Sanford stadium. (UGA) I wish I could get permission just around the campus I think it goes back to late 1700s maybe early 1800s. Just wishful thinking
10 years ago when I first started metal detecting, I remember seeing about a half dozen channels on YT devoted to metal detecting Now there is probably over 150 channels devoted to the hobby. In my opinion there has been an explosion in the hobby due to TH-cam channels exposing the hobby to thousands of guys and gals who find the lure of digging up treasure pretty tempting. It's no surprise to me that good targets are getting harder to find. Most of my finds these days are pennies that other guys have passed up while cherry picking. The number one reason it is harder to find good targets is due to the number of competitors out in the field today.
It's easy but if you don't have an app that you're paying for on your phone It's a little bit harder. There are vacant lots in my area that you won't find any information about on the internet Unless you spend a lot of time digging for it. I would rather get asked to leave by a cop Then have somebody who is 3 states away Tell me over the phone I can't go there.
Not sure where you are but where I have property at the county auditor has owner info. Most all properties I have looked for the owner of I was able to get the info off the website for the auditor in that state and county. Stamps are cheap

I figure if they are 5 states away They are not going to know that I am on their precious abandoned lot. When I hunt a place like this It actually looks better than it did when I got there Because I pick up a bag full of trash. I guess it really depends upon the area you live and what is around the vacant land. Where I am at people really could care less. In a city of 300K people, folks tend to mind their business.

Hi There. I hear a lot about detecting in parks and grounds of public gatherings in the states. Is one literally just coin shooting surface items, Or. Are you granted permission to dig. Here in England we don't have permission to dig on public/city owned property, I,e parks etc. Just wondered what the deal is in the USA.
We are allowed to dig in the vast majority of them. Some cities require a permit. I would say the average depth of recovered coins and jewelry is 5 inches ( almost 13 Cm).
State parks here in my State, Florida, does not allow detecting in the park, but the beach is mostly fair game, except for the water, that becomes state property if any value, as such I don’t hunt in the water at the park, other parts of the beach’s are fair game.
Absolutely not! This hat was given to me during combat in Operation Desert Storm by General Schwarzkopf. It has a lot of sentimental value. I do wash it and restarch it from time to time.
I have a whole house full of stuff that is from my time in the service That is well preserved Including photographs of myself and the man that gave me that hat.. At 56 years old I guess I just like wearing it and figure that once i'm gone nobody's really going to care about it anyway. I actually consider it a good luck charm when i'm out metal detecting.

It's all good! In my case remaining covered indoors is actually authorized because I'm armed. The only time I'm not is when I'm in bed or in the shower LOL!

Cemetaries!!! not around the stones or plots though,, find the trails or back areas where folks might stroll around and also some of the real old ones,, people actually had picnics in them,, found 2 Indian head pennies in one of these cemetaries,,, Note,,, please be discreet and do not go there with a shovel!
