As a said yesterday on Twitter to you mate, love your videos. Real-life, tough situations, most times with these channels, you don't get this! Fair play for giving it a bloody good go mate.
Thanks Chris, it isn't easy finishing a video off with such a negative end but I still think its worth sharing and more relevant people see its not always rosy behind the lens. :)
Fantastic video footage, You've really done a great job selling the race. You did the right thing pulling out, that must have been hard. Good luck with your training!
Thanks, was wary people would be looking forward to the usual uplifting watch but sometimes it doesn't go to plan so while this one wasn't as enjoyable to pull together I thought it was still important to share. I'm pretty much recovered already so think I did make the right decision in the end. :)
Good to see you out running again mate, even if the race didn't finish as you hoped. Looked like a tough one. Best of luck with getting back on top form and enjoying your training 👍🏻🏃♂️
Thanks Mark, to be honest lots of people have reached out with a similar experience, feeling sapped from the off so do wonder if the heat had a part to play.
That was a great effort Darren no shame in pulling out you made the correct decision, now you can forget that race and focus on the next one. Onwards and upwards 👍
Gutted to hear you pulled out mate but still a beautiful place to spend a day. Fingers crossed you have a speedy recovery period and can't wait to see what the future holds for you 👍🏻.
sorry it wasn't your day, but thanks for another great video. I've walked the three peaks (in the May snow in fact!) but have always fancied racing it one day - good to see a racers view, and yes I remember going thigh deep in the bog!
Great video Darren as always 👍 Use the experience as a positive to know what you are capable of physically and mentally . Being out for 5 weeks for a race like that definitely doesn't help . So onward and upwards to the next race but more importantly enjoy your running. 👍
A fantastic video Darren, my wife and my close friend did pop over at the start of the race to say hi. Hopefully, we see you again at next years race. Keep those videos coming 👍
It depends on what you need personally but for me the VJ Xtrm 2 would be ideal for its sticky grip and decent lugs, plus the rock plate will be appreciated in the final descent.
Obviously not the result you wanted but as you said, you're fitter than the previous year and come out of it injury free and ready for the next challenge! Pob lwc!
Always enjoy your videos. I was sad to learn that you pulled out. Hope you can be back doing 3 PPP's 2023. If you get time from your busy lifestyle it would be great to see more videos and see how your getting on. I ran on the day and although I tried to train for this event I too struggled and didn't get the time I wanted. I wonder if maybe I'd not done enough regular consistent long runs. Shame I didn't see you on the day. What races have you in mind for the rest of the year?
Thanks mate, its a tough balance to find, right now more videos don't look likely but we'll see how it goes. Right now I don't really have any races specifically planned going to just run and see how I feel about Summer races. Sorry to hear your race didn't quite go as hoped but it is a brutal course, there really is nowhere to hide.
Mr Evans, greetings and good day. You did great on the race. I know you didn’t get the time you hoped for but it was hot and you went over on the ankle, so try not to be hard on yourself! Plus you didn’t have me to chase or me chasing you down! Maybe next year eh! Darren I saw you on the tarmac road up to the checkpoint at the hill inn just before you sadly retired. I asked if your the guy from TH-cam and as tired as you have been you gave a smile and thumbs up! Keep training and posting the great content 👍
No shame in a DNF mate. You weren't there just to complete the course (you know you can do that) but to run a time. If for whatever reason it's not the day for that then saving the lega for another day is sensible. 👍
Hmmm, love the honesty of the videos but can’t ever agree with the attitude that quitting because you can’t get a target time is better than completing. Inspire people to be brave, don’t inspire people to quit.
So when my only purpose is to get a specific time and I have completed the course before I should carry on adding two weeks on to my recovery and effect the next race goal? No it’s about understanding your goals and been brave enough to make the right, logical decision. Trust me it was much harder to call it a day in the moment, I’m not here to inspire I’m here to share the journey and that’s the problem with TH-cam these days too much fluffy fake content and not enough real. It all comes down to your purpose of turning up…only I get to decide what that is. To be honest I take issue with the way you word it and especially the word quit, that’s not what this was if you watch all my other race videos you may understand that…I never have a problem with going through pain to achieve something, ever, but I won’t do it pointlessly costing myself in future races. I find it ridiculous that this video got my most dislikes of any and it’s the only time in two years I made a tough choice to fight stronger on another day..seems all people want is to be lied to, it’s one of the reasons I decided to stop making content. One of the best fell and ultra runners in the country is a close friend and he DNF’s more than he’d like but only ever for the ‘right’ reasons, never because he can’t finish, it was from him I learned it’s not always right to just plough through for no reason.
@@DarrenSmithTrailRunning I'm hopefully running the 3 peaks this year after a few years of thinking about it and your videos are some of the best in giving an insight into the route, nutrition and mentality needed to complete it. This and your other uploads have certainly helped me out in getting into fell running pal. Hopefully there's more to come in the future 👍
Great to see another film really inspiring. I’ve sign up for a 44 mile ultra in the yorkshire wolds just hope I can get in under 12 hours.
You should have no problem with that on the Wolds, enjoy!

Thanks Declan it’s always tough pulling out and something I’ve not had the experience to do before, getting more sensible with age I guess 😂
Will you attempting the race again in 2023?
Reet, dogs had a run out, kettle's boiled.. looking forward to this one 😁👍
Ah.. gutted for you pal. Still, you need do what's right for you so fair play. Cheers for the vid. Good to see you back at it 👍

Yes onwards and upwards.
Hard luck Darren, loved both your 3 peaks videos, sub 4 was my aim, fell short with 4.10
Thanks Andrew it’s a brutal course and to do a time hangs on fine margins. Great event though
Gutted to hear you pulled out mate but still a beautiful place to spend a day. Fingers crossed you have a speedy recovery period and can't wait to see what the future holds for you 👍🏻.
Yeh it wasn't as planned mate but it happens. Plenty to look forward too like. Hope your well pal
Another great video Darren, sorry to hear the race didn’t go to plan but definitely the right decision to pull out. Onwards and upwards .👍
Yeh feeling better already so happy with the decision knowing I can get back at it sooner.
sorry it wasn't your day, but thanks for another great video. I've walked the three peaks (in the May snow in fact!) but have always fancied racing it one day - good to see a racers view, and yes I remember going thigh deep in the bog!
Thanks Josie, its a totally different experience running to walking I'd actually argue it can be a tougher walk.
Tough luck but a strong decision, great to see you back with another vid, missed them over the last few weeks/months 👍
Thanks mate, not the result I wanted but always worth sharing the experience good or bad
Great video Darren as always 👍

Good effort Darren, your be back
Thanks Gemma :)

Thanks Tim, it was great to see so many people on course and while running even!
What shoe would you recommend for this race?
It depends on what you need personally but for me the VJ Xtrm 2 would be ideal for its sticky grip and decent lugs, plus the rock plate will be appreciated in the final descent.
Great video Darren, looked like an amazing race and sure you'll be back another time 👍
Yeh its a cracking event, especially when it goes to plan.
Obviously not the result you wanted but as you said, you're fitter than the previous year and come out of it injury free and ready for the next challenge! Pob lwc!
Yeh already feeling ready to train again so think I made the right decision to right the race off and move on

Thanks for the support on course, I remember...that was about the point I'd stopped arguing with myself over retiring lol
Wise move mate live to fight another day my mate finished 3rd again this year
Indeed, was a competitive field this year too!
It’s a shame that things didn’t work out on the run up, or the day…but your PB will still be there and ready to smash next time round 👍
Thanks Bob it is a shame but was bound to happen at some point.
Heat was the factor I had set my pace for 4 hrs 25-30 but was overheating off whernside and lost time up Ingleborough. Better luck next time
I think a fair few will have been scuppered by the heat Andrew, it certainly surprised me.
No shame in a DNF mate. You weren't there just to complete the course (you know you can do that) but to run a time. If for whatever reason it's not the day for that then saving the lega for another day is sensible. 👍
Exactly mate, I knew deep down before Whernside it was going that way I think. Onwards 😊
