I am asian and I'm also a witness of this racism as well, when I was a pre registered nurse the carers were really ordering me around and one even ordered me to say "come here" with their hand signal. They can't believe that I am an experienced nurse and is laughing at every decision that I make like I'm stupid and all. I can't understand them for the first few months and is usually silent when they're talking.
Tips: remember to love yourself, these people who loves to bully us are miserable ones and don't let them get into your system, and yes, have a relationship with the Lord 🙏

Sorry you felt that way, I have had a different experience in Scotland. I work in a home where my salary is not that much, but I'm so comfortable here. My head of unit, the carers in my team, my deputy Manager, my manager, everybody is so nice. I have had someone carry my bag and walked me out of the train station to where I could find a bus to my destination, people greeting you every now and then, asking about my family, buying me stuffs, etc. I really love my home.

I can relate very well with your story Tosin. My experience was in a rural village in Leeds. One of them was even bold enough to ask "Are you brainy at all"? This is a carer, probably with no GCSE asking me a master's degree holder if I was brainy. Of course they later realised that I have brains each time we attend training sessions together. I left just about the time they're warming up to me. They actually cried and gave me loads of gifts even for my family that were in Africa then when was leaving. The problem with them (younger ones) especially up north , is that they aren't exposed. Majority have never traveled more than 50 kilometres away from their birthplace. They speak English with their local dialect and think your own English is inferior. If you had settled in the metropolitan Midlands or London the discrimination you'd face would have been different.

I went through something similar and I was European born. I did my undergrad in England. I’m not a nurse but a registered healthcare professional. My English manager made my work life hell. To date, they’re the worse manager that I’ve ever had. The gaslighting was mad. He called me aggressive, rude, self serving. My colleagues were lovely and that’s what got me through. When I handed in my notice, he was shocked. Started asking my colleagues why I would leave 🤣🤣🤣 it took him a few months to find my replacement. My takeaway: I should’ve reported him because I had evidence. If anyone is going though this, please ask for help from your union rep. They will be able to guide you through the grievance process.

Ooh my gdness,it reminds me of what I went through too at a home,I felt an outcast, team lead shouting at me, came home shading my tears, never felt lk going back but look,I need money,am a student, lost my self esteem, back home was a clinician, with all the medicine in me, but now a nanny is better than me. Felt like giving, changed to a different home, approached in a way of like testing my naivety, but I learnt the tactics, first impression matters, the difference between us is just the skin, I boldly talked, inquired everything boldly,I know my rights, and found it better the first day, preferring to book shifts in that home now as I work on joining NHS. Never give up guys, don't allow anyone put you down,it's painful esp when you don't want to let ppl back home know what you are going through, and don't have anyone around in u.k to talk to, the available sorrounding ppl ladies are too busy, men are ready to listen to you but take advantage of that opportunity, what a shit, but we are strong ppl with high levels of melanin.

I’ve been here for 8 years and have consciously tried to blend in while maintaining authenticity. In fact, even Nigerians can’t tell I’m Nigerian until I tell them because I don’t sound like it. Yet and still, in my final placement of my nursing degree I met a mentor that was so insidious in her racism. I tried to stand up for myself and it only caused more problems. People shouldn’t have to go through this. We’re human too

My own home in Belfast is worse..... 😂... One of the nurses even told me I was smelling bad 😔.... What was surprising was that I had just worked 2 days with the nurse and we both were on mask throughout. The same nurse wouldn't tell the incontinent residents with feaces and urine that they were smelling. How was I smelling to the extent that u could perceived it thru the mask... I must be smelling so bad then... 😂 Many things happening in this UK! I look at them and told myself, if u come to the emergency unit where I worked in Nigeria, you would get lost, I should be ur boss.. LoL 😆... Anyways, we have come oo... The search for pounds brought us this far... 😂

Well I have a different opinion to this, I was once a fresher in the Uk. I would encourage you to review what the lady said to you, telling you that you smell doesn’t mean that she wanted to be rude to you. I think she is referring your body odour which is normal for everyone but you can control it by using a deodorant. I already have it in mind long time ago to write to Nanelle to make a video about body odour which is one of the problems that new immigrants encountered at work. Many people don’t use a deodorant back home and they continue like that in the Uk until someone finally introduced them to a deodorant. Many of the white people bath only once or twice in a week but they don’t smell because they use a lot of deodorants. meanwhile, I know someone who showered more than three times in a day but her body odour still smells bad because she doesn’t use a deodorant.

@@phunmyjan you are entitled to your opinion, but the issue I'm raising here is not about body odour, it is the manner and politeness of saying things to someone who is just meeting you for first two days. First impression last longer they say. If we all begin to point out each other's bad side, everyone has... Yours might not be body odour.

Resign and move to a different team at the first sign of being bullied or having 'capability' procedures being offered to 'help' you. It's just Gaslighting by managers. Find a team where you're treated fairly. Managers need tasks and won't mind if you leave as it gives them work to do: recruiting more staff!

I asked some old man that clearly worked at the station and he asked "where are you from?" Mumu me, I answered thinking I was still in 9ja. BIG MISTAKE! That's how Baba changed it and said "you came all the way from Nigeria to miss your train?!" Hey God! Then he walked off whistling, I recognized the song the title was "if only I had a brain". Ah!
