Really impressive how they managed to play under such windy conditions - I mean, even on their regular flat groundstrokes, the ball has a tremendous curve on it which is really hard to handle. It's always moving to the left side like they sliced it or put sidespin on itl

If you've ever watched Federer up close, you'll know he doesn't hit "flat" at all.

a topspin loopy ball can "penetrate" the court as well. penetrate really means depth.

No, there's an aspect of velocity coupled with depth. Otherwise even a lob/slice would be "penetrating", if deep enough.

7:16 - Roger thought the ball won't make it past the net...and neither did he expect Mathieu to chase that ball..

In this sport, as long as some spin is put on the ball, it will have a better chance of going over the net; you need spin, and without any spin, the odds of the ball going over are very low even though you might surprise someone from time to time.

Mathieu has talent. He's a lot better overall than Gasquet, and Monfils IMO.

Can't see clearly the match point. I thought Mathieu won that point.

don't think there was any sidespin to that backhand, looks like the wind just blew it into the court.

Anybody in the top 125 ATP Rankings actually does not hit flat at all in a regular groundstroke rally. Rafa's average topspin=3,200 RPM (rotations per minute), Roger's average topspin=2,700 RPM Watch here: /watch?v=9hlSb6Apek8 @ 1:00 , 1:35 , 2:55 , 3:04 , and 3:17 , also google: Jim's Blog Federer Hits with more spin than Nadal

so nadal average spin is 3200 and fed is 2700 but federer hits with more spin?seems legit

Very windy condition, the US Open rarely has a nice weather, either windy, or extremely humid and hot, or both. Not a good place for a grand slam, overrated.

    The term should be "penetrating"
