      Shawn, I noticed on previous videos that you consistently refer to these insects as "yellow jacket hornets." Is this the standard terminology in your neck of the woods? The reason I ask is that we have them back east as well, but they are just referred to as yellow jackets.

    They breathe through their exoskeleton. Theres a layer of wax/oil on the exoskeleton that makes it hydrophobic and gives them more time to get out of water. What the dish soap does it strips the oil layer completely off the body, making them drown instantly.

    I'm assuming that one of the ways yellowjackets let the hive know they are under attack is by releasing a pheromone when under attack or distressed but since they are getting vacuumed they seem to be calmly walking out with dirt since it is a literal vacuum sucking up all the pheromone in the air so they cant alert each other until you just dug it up. just assuming this since I heard bees also use a pheromone when in distress.

    • @scorpman300
      @scorpman300 2 ปีที่แล้ว +45

      i have done this on a much bigger nest. you dont have to stand there if you have a stronger vac. you just place the hose end at the hole and turn it on. but yes they do pour out when the alarm is sounded. between the vibration of the vac, noise, and the pheromone they come running. this nest was really not that big, it might have been at one time but under 500 wasps is nothing

  • @ikillyou121
    @ikillyou121 2 ปีที่แล้ว +62

    Hey Shaun. Cool tip if you plan on taking down a yellow jacket nest with a shop-vac. If you bang on the ground near the entrance with your fist / feet, it'll agitate the workers and guards inside and cause them to come up out of the nest. Be sure to angle the vacuum hose so it sucks them up from the air in front of the entrance. This lets you catch returning foragers and prevents them from being able to latch onto the ground to try to avoid being sucked up.
    It lets you get the majority of the nest before even doing any digging. A lot of the remaining yellow jackets left in the nest are newly-hatched and can't fly so even easier to take them out.

    There was a large nest inside our bedroom wall, in fact, the nest was situated just the other side of the paneling from the head of our bed. I tried all summer to lure the yellowjackets into lures placed about but caught very few. Being the nest was so close to the interior of the house, I knew it would survive winter quite well. Late in the summer, I set up with the shop vac and sucked up yellowjackets for over an hour. I also placed duct tape over the siding and foundation so all yellowjackets had only one path in or out. I filled the path with diatomaceous earth. No yellowjackets the following season.

I made a mix of 5L ( about 1 1/4 gallons) of diesel fuel I had been soaking some greasy hoist parts in, 2L ( about 1/2gall) petrol with some old car engine oil ( 100ml - about 1/10th of a quart) in a weed sprayer. I sprayed the mix down into the nests, with a 2m (6ft) trail to light it. Went off like a cannon, showering dirt about 10m (30ft) away, and burned for over 1/2 hour, then I filled it with water mixed with detergent. Haven’t seen any since.

      Yeah, the nozzle being used seemed weak. To me, if you have to put effort in waving the nozzle around to catch them, it kinda defeats the purpose of being as safe as possible, even if wearing a bee suit. A much wider nozzle would have been much more effective and just letting it sit there.

    I once had yellow jackets in with walls/attic of a house I was renting. I was too poor to have a service. I didn't want to bother the landlord for fear of a rent increase. I also didn't want poison. So I waited for it to get cold enough to slow them down (we are 50s- 60s year round), then I hung up 3 strips of fly paper before they really started to swarm. They bailed pretty quick. I like this vacuum technique

    When I lived in Arizona a friend of mine that ran a pest control business told me that when it came to "taking out" a bee/hornet/wasp ECT... Nest he used a water sprayer with detergent to annihilate them. I used this to great effect in Idaho against Yellowjackets& Wasps. I used a garden sprayer connected to a hose and Dawn dish soap. If they don't die from asphyxiation with the soap film they can't fly. When they can't fly they're as easy to step on as ants. Nice video! Love seeing the one thing that I absoulty despise get exterminated.👍

    We have had a few this summer. One was under some wood in the yard. After three attempts to destroy the nest, the fourth required a bee suit as I got stung four times by two of the Girls.
    We did battle with one living under our chicken coop run's skirt. After four runs at it with no success, a hole I'd made to flood them with turned into an entrance outside the run. We've left them alone since as they are not bothering anyone including the chickens.
    We have NERF water cannons for the hangers on. They work like a charm from a good distance away. It takes three washes before the Girls move on.

Went around and while i was taking my time...i managed to get too close to where they were...i looked back and saw them coming. Got stung a couple more times and jumped off and ran for my life yet again. A total of 9 stings. I know where the nest is now but just been cutting around it. At least an 8ft cushion.
