I’ve researched those caterpillar looking things. For their larval stage, yellowjackets needs protein. Adults hunt other insects and bring them back to the colony to feed the young, which are chewed and conditioned in preparation for larval consumption. Seems that was what was going on up in there.
You know this man has balls when he posts his fishing spot on the internet
"Do not tell fish stories where the people know you; but particularly, don't tell them where they know the fish."

I’m “hooked” on Shawn Woods!
You know this man has balls when he was able to produce a child...
In THIS economy lol.
Shawn has evolved from mouse hunter become full fledged adventurer who accepts quest for public good 😁
I'll bet he'd be a wonderful guy to have as a neighbour.
I loved the father/daughter moment
Ruby's excitement & enthusiasm is adorable 😊
It's always cute whenever Shawn's family makes a cameo :)
Most yellowjacket colonies begin producing queens in August.
The big one are 2024 queens, they hide for winter and each one surviving the winter will create a new colony in the spring.
So your saying he eradicated generations of these monsters? 😮
@@claudekim7876 Made us proud 🥺
Me: Throws a big rock at the nest and goes home stung a million times. Tells mother that I was attacked for no reason and cries. Shawn: Protective suit and trained.
The fun things we used to do as kids lol
So it wasn't just a me thing. 😀
Here in Canada when the nests are up high ,it’s a sign of a lot of snow
Love watching extermination of dangerous wasp nests. I’ve been fascinated of the idea of how to, destroying a dangerous nest when its on a home, or anywhere where people walk. These vids will continue to make me watch you over and over again. All of these teach me the lesson again that wasps are not to be messed with, and pack a huge punch while unprotected.
But the best time to rob these nests is at night, when they're all on the nest & inactive... I always get them at night, because you're guaranteed to get the entire colony...no survivors...way I do an underground nest, mark the hole, come back after dark with a funnel & a pint of gasoline, put the funnel in the hole, pour in gasoline, then plug the hole...done... easiest ones ever... gotta get a little creative with hanging nests sometimes, but attacking at night is the best time regardless...the satisfaction of hosing down an entire colony with a long range foaming spray is the best!!! Lol!
I do pest control and I've noticed a few large yellow jackets nests this year being shared with bald faced hornets. And I agree I've also seen alot more yellow jackets nests I've had to remove in ceilings in homes. I'm thinking it's becuase all the rain we have got in the Northeast they are being washed out of the ground more.
How is he such a good father? I would be 1. shouting "that's not how you hold a fishing rod!" and then 2. "Don't touch the fish hook, Oh My God!!!!" and my daughters would never go fishing with me again.
She's little she doesn't know
He's a good example!
@13ased_American I think he meant he's impressed with Shawn's fatherly patience
@@ericexp497 He edited it, it said How is he a good father? Yeah now reading it again I think you're right
she’s three years old dude calm down. You too, sir, are capable of understanding how, and why, a child’s intelligence is less than your own, as an adult. But if you individually choose to treat the child with contempt and disregard, that would say a lot about your own lack of intelligence and patience, being unwilling to admit to yourself that you, too, were once a small child, who learned stuff and grew up into an adult. Have mercy on the children, fine sire!😅🎉
2:30... DUDE! Take care of the bag!! Come back for the ladder.
My thoughts exactly !
I stepped on a nest the other day and got stung up pretty bad. Nice to know their cousins have been punished.
Made me laugh out loud!
Do you think those caterpillars were brought to to the nest as food for the yellow jacket larvae?
We always get yellowjacket nests in the ground in our yard, at least two or three a year. I'm semi-allergic to stings so we try to get rid of them as soon as we see them. The only nest we didn't take out was the one that was discovered by raccoons or skunks before we could destroy it ourselves. The nest was completely dug up, leaving a good-sized hole in the ground and shredded nest everywhere. Guess fish aren't the only ones who find those pupae delicious!
Bears like them too!
Bears too! We had a bear eat one of our ground nests. I stepped on one a couple weeks ago, this was my second time. I was miserable. Had to take steroids and antibiotics, it knocked me down for a solid 10 days or so.
you know i’m a loyal subscriber when i don’t flinch anymore when shawn digs his hand into a pile of dead yellow jackets
Still gives me the creeps...use some gloves...🤢🤢🤢
I never get tired of watching Shawn paw through piles of dead yellow jackets...
I think you brushed the actual queen off the tree around 2:10. That sucker looked massive.
I was looking at that too!
use the larvae or pupa as bait is awesome.. We did that when we were kids. Destroying a wasp nest and then taking the grubs out for bait while they were still wiggling. Excellent bait. Especially on a cane pole, so like your fly rod.
Those are young queens, if you observe the cells on the comb(s) you will notice both average size and much larger size cells made specifically for raising young queens.
I found 35 five big ones in a nest containing 76 normal size wasps. I thought they could be new queens too, but it was a 13th of July... It seems a bit early, don't you think ? So, I'm still wondering what these super wasps were.
@@JeanChordeiles Could they be males/drones? I believe those are bigger than the average worker.
@@MrIronJustice : Well, I don't think they were drones, because they seemed to have normal size antennas. Most likely, they were young queens that were early in the season. Thank you for your reply, anyway.
Great eradication of the nasties, Shawn. They are such dangerous pests. I’m frequently stung, and bitten by them. And I don’t react well. My hand doubled in size after the last one. So painful. I’ve gotta build one of your meat bait traps. Thanks for sharing.
Wake up babe, Shawn is killing another Yellowjacket nest.
Ruby is a cute name! You have a great family Shawn and you seem like a really cool Dad!
@Shawn : I found a smaller nest with exactly the same difference in size between two kinds of adults (76 were normal wasps, but 35 looked like small hornets) and I'm also trying to come up with an explanation.
- The species of my nest seemed to be _vespula vulgaris_ while yours seems to be _vespula germanica._
- I destroyed this nest mid-July (not this year, though) in France (same seasons), so, I don't think the big ones were the next generation of queens.
What time of the year did you find yours ?
i looked it up, vespula germanica has developed a tendency to polygyny. As an invader species it gives them an upper hand taking control of a territory
Later in the season wasps start producing next year’s queens and the males that will fertilize them. Looks like this next had gotten started already.
You should do a video perhaps testing DIY and store bought Mosquito traps!
Seeing these insects getting their home obliterated brings a smile to my face.
profile pic checks out
Same. My job brought me into contact with bears and cougars, in the wild...but it was the wasps I dreaded with fervent horror.
Why, they kill other pest insects. They'll kill the invasive laternfly.
Any wasp nest on my property that poses a threat to me or my family will be destroyed. This was apparently the case here.@@purplepheasant4776
Lol
Glad I'm not the only one with a yellow jacket nest in my freezer 😅
could the caterpillars be food that they wasps brought back for the larva?
Absolutely love your videos!
Always fascinating and informative.
Hey I'm a huge fan been watching for years and were both from Oregon!!!
I had a huge nest on the peak of my roof this year. But it must be getting close to the end of the season, because once we tore it down, there were very few yellowjackets in the nest, and very few larvae.
My grandfather used to say when they nest in the tree, that would be a mild winter ❄️. If you remember next spring let us know how was.
Awesome job getting the nest bagged up. I always thought that would be a good method to remove their nests fastly. You made it seem effortlessly.
Been missing those fishing vids! Nice to see at least a few mins of fishing in your vids again! :D
That was great seeing the fishing at the end. Thank you for that moment.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and keep your videos coming please, we really appreciate them.
Brutally Awesome! Thank you for your service!
that looked way too easy!
Great video! Smart tactics! Beautiful family! Bravo!
Get effed yellow jackets!
I was doing that just today, fileting tiny sunfish because the kid wanted to eat them. About 1/2 chicken nugget worth of meat per fish. Good on you!
Please use the ladder properly. You have it backward. This will put an unsafe amount of pressure on the swivel/locking part of that ladder.
Oh wow I just saw that........ I have the same ladder there's no way I'd ever climb with my bodyweight going against that hinge 😳
I get chills looking at those big ones. *shudders*
You know you watch to many video mishaps when one thinks "whittle whubey" was going to accidentally high five the fish hook on her whittle hands glad it wasn't so. Fun-tastic vid with Dad and kid .God speed
I recently destroyed a similar sized nest/hive here in North Idaho. It was above ground, but only by a few inches as it was built into a storage area I keep covered with an old truck bed liner.
I would have to say I see more above ground nests around here than below ground. Maybe hotter areas tend to make them build below ground?
I find yellowjackets are about 50/50 as to whether above or below ground. The above ground ones tend to be in line of sight to one another. If you find a small one, "an outpost", look around, there should be a slightly larger one in line of sight. As they get larger, you are getting near the main colony. This is either inside of a tree trunk, inside a wall space, or under the ground, or a huge above ground one like you found.
edit: please don't call them bees.
Yeah, I also noticed when he called 'em bees, but he often tells people those are not bees but wasps. Just a slip of the tongue I guess.
Looks like a Hornets nest.
Love the content, I’d also like to see something on mosquitoes, there are some products but do any work?
I heard there are some which is air blown to trap them or some is a bug zapper use to put in restaurants
Here in Canada if they build high it’s been a wet summer and dry if they build low. Also means lots of snow if they build high.
She’s fearless I love her 😭
4:57 Whoops. That should have been "Five hundred thirty".
Great vid in so many ways - Thanks!
I'm betting drones & future queens as you said. It is getting later in the season and they will be emerging to mate & the lone queens will overwinter for next year's new generation.
Main queen takes care of the top cone which carries future queens. Secondary queens are ones who make workers, soldiers, etc on all other cones. That's why alot of them are big.
Could the difference of where they are building their nests be due to the heavier rainfall we had last winter?
That was something out of a cartoon. He smacked the ouch bag....
There are multiple subscecies of yellow jackets. Some of the subspecies do build above-ground nests.
I have a bald faced hornet nest about twice that size. My daughter wants me to open it up.
Nice. You've just made my day.
Thanks for not eating the larvae! ❤
I always thought they could still sting after death... do we know if there is any truth to that?
We've always called these paper wasps. Removed the same way but at night after soaking it with poison
Another great video. I'm glad to see you continue to exterminate evasive pest.
That was freaking adorable!
Enjoyed watching
Great vid once again
fun fact: the big ones with wings are actually males they are called drones they are known as mating wasps/bees
Great stuff. Thank you.
Who else is watching shawn on their monday off?👨🏾🔧
Shawn you are so awesome! I love your videos!
Wow I can’t believe this video went viral within a Day great work Shawn 😄
Love all your videos! Watched a video on the many ways to use WD40. Eliminating nests of bees was one of the suggestions. Your next video suggestion.😊
The aerial and subterranean varieties are different species, though the subterranean kind also nest in walls, crevices, etc.
Well looks like I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of information that will give me fun facts.
Good catch
There’s enough there to make a big pot of yellow jacket soup!
The kiddo had a great time fishing
...at the end I expected for it to be both catching yellowjacket's *and* bluegill! 🙂
There are other wasp videos on TH-cam at tge moment showing tge same thing, several larger thsn normal wasps included in the nest. Lets just hope they arent the future of wasps.
so cute seeing you spend time with your daughter :)
I got stung twice this year when I haven’t been stung by yellow jackets for years. They are way more active this year, and aggressive.
♥ Awesome! Bluegill is my favorite. 😃
Where did you buy your suit. I have a nest id like to rid of myself but I dont feel confident about some of the suits.
Like several other comments , what products , bug zappers , sprays, traps really work for mosquitos ? 👍🏻🇺🇸
Ruby's adorable, way to go fishergirl.😊
so those big yellow jackets in that colony are most likely queens....as it's normal for colonies to produce queens towards the end of the season
Nice video!
I wonder what it means when they nest above ground. A mild winter, bad winter, flood. Makes me wonder.
By this time the nest is producing next year's queens that will fly away to mate with males from other colonies. The males are only slightly larger than workers. For the mating flight the queens give off pheromones that gets all other males and queens flying from all nests, preventing mating with males from the same nest for the most part. The males die soon after mating and fertile queens seek out a place to hibernate for the winter. Some may hibernate inside the nest. The ones in your video are aerial yellowjackets and are different from the ground dwelling ones. Thanks for this video!
to bee or not to bee 😋
Shawn… your “Japanese style” of fishing is just cane-pole fishing with a fancy pole! Which there has been American versions for years as well (the pole). But few things are better to see than a dad fishing with his kids!
I believe if you did that after dark they would ALL bee in there.
When I was younger I caught a bee and put it in the freezer for a few minutes. It slowed it down enough so I could tie a sewing string around it's abdomen. I then put it in the sun to warm it up, then it started flying around. I took my pet bee for a walk around the house. My mom didn't think it was as funny as I did.
I was hoping you'd hurl that bag into the fires of Mount Doom. Oh well.
Where could one buy a fishing pole like what you showed
My daughter wouldn't want to eat them, she would want to keep them as pets
Very unusual nest, bald faced hornet sized. Must be opposite year, this I've had bald faced hornets actually build inside of something, a wall, or farm equipment. Very very unusual.
I wanna se how you use this as a bait for fishing
