PG's Jordan Wagner is on location at Electrical Audio Studios in Chicago, where catches up with Russian Circles' Mike Sullivan and Brian Cook during the recording of their fifth album, Memorial. The duo reveals a close-up look at their studio guitar and bass rigs, which combine the gear they use live with numerous other pieces from their own personal collections and Electrical Audio's gear coffers.
It's funny- I watch these videos to learn more about a player's gear, but usually, I just walk away with a much deeper appreciation for the player's technique and a reinspired love for their music... What an incredible series this is... :)
+GuitarGear1 To be very honest this, Nels Cline's, Larry Lalonde's and Paul Gilbert's rig rundown were the only two where they actually showcased the player's technique and playing style. Most of the time, the guitarist isn't even in the video. It's just their techs or someone else going through gear.
Absolutely
Brian Cook's section starts at 19:00 .
Brian is a good dude. He always remembers that my band opened for TAAS whenever I see him. He's a good fella to talk to. He may be the nicest guy in the world.
His sound seems to be the opposite of his personnality haha
I watch this video once a month.
Hahaha. That makes two of us man!
NewMozart no man, that makes three of us man
your wrong, that makes four of us man!
There's a new one! I am finally free to move on.
Well, without Brian, so it's not as complete as this one !
I really couldn't be happier with this rig rundown.
death rides a horse is such a wicked track, he really knocked it out of the park
I remember seeing them at their second show at the bottom lounge when I was a sophomore in high school. They changed my life, and sent me on the musicians course immediately. And then some time later, my band at the time played with Raise the Red Lantern at the Sub T and their original bassist showed up and gave us great compliments which gave me a huge confidence boost. Hearing him speak reminds me of so many guys who live guitar out here in chicago. He is a leader in spirit.
i don't know why i expected brian's voice to be in the sub range
wow. i've never heard this band but i just bought all their works on iTunes. I love down to Earth people like these gentlemen.
What they completely gloss over is the computer like precision time that these guys have to be able to work within all of those live loops. Amazing.
Do a Conan and an OM rig rundown
+Jake Belz YES
Or sleept high on fire
Someone get the man a glass of water, please.
Why 😂😂😂
@@_thisiswhatyouwanted_ You can hear his mouth "bubbling" or something when he talks, can't really describe the sound.
Every pedal question with the bassist.
Interviewer: And what pedal is that one?
Brian: It's a fuzz, that also does [x]
I love Russian Circles, I wasn't ripping on them. It's still funny to see that many fuzz pedals on a board.
And hey, if it works for him, then I'm all for whatever tools he needs.
First Dillinger and now Russian Circles?! Premier Guitar, you guys are the shit. You guys choose great bands, ask good questions, and you let the the person you're interviewing talk. Best rig rundowns ever.
I met Brian at a concert. Talked to him for like 5 minutes. Solid dude.
He looks so much like old Rust from True Detective.
I was thinking exactly that
yees
Landon Echeverio somewhat like Darrell's nemesis in walking dead too, forgot his name, burned face guy*
Carcosa and the Yellow King
Thought the same thing. I expected him to start talking about how guitars were really useless in the grand scheme of things, and that were were all going to return to the great void in spite of what we try to create in life.
I thought my pedalboard was messy!
I love watching all the Rig Rundows, Thanks PG!
can never go wrong with that godly Custom Les paul of Honor
one of the greatest guitar ever created
i also love the old vintage japanese Ibanez version of it
is SICK
Thank you PG for making this video! Russian Circles has been one of my most favorite bands for the past 5+ years. I'm a bass player and Brian Cook has been a my biggest influence since the Botch days. I'm on my second Swollen Pickle after giving up on my first try - it was informative to see Brian's settings. I'm realizing that I took the wrong approach with my settings. I just wish I knew what he set his Clip and Voice settings to.
Anyways, thanks again! Great video!!
Fantastic interview. Well put questions and answers. Thank you for letting us hear Mike explain his technique.
Jeff Beck and now this. Premium guitar is just getting better and better for me!
A few months ago I asked for this rig rundown on fb... and now I'm watching it! Mike is my favourite guitar player EVER, his playing is super inspiring. Thanks a lot PG!!!
I like when he mentioned them creating loops in between songs when they are "engaging with the audience" because they never talk to the crowd lol. I love that. xD
Jordan is a solid interviewer
Mike's voice reminds of Les Claypool.
Not hearing it.
I hear a similarity
he sucks hehe
Id buy an epiphone mike sullivan les Paul like that
That's steve albini's studio, right?
Love the way this dude plays. Very cool rig rundown.
Mike is such awesome and very talented Guitarist
can totally relate with the band since i mostly play Doom metal stuff
and use drop B or A most of times
Brian cook!!!!!! Verellen!!!!! The pride of the northwest.
Seattle and Chicago - best of both worlds
Great interview.
Insightful.
Intelligent questions.
Straight forward answers.
Mike couldn't be happier!
New drinking game: Drink every time Mike says "I couldn't be happier".
Rule of thumb, fast forward to the last 30 seconds to see the bass stuff
For clarification, the Traynor TS50-B amp is solid state not tube... Great little amp!
Now I started listening to them )) thank you PG!
I was surprised that I couldn't be happier.
For some reason I couldn't be happier. I was really surprised by it. Really. Surprised.
Holy crap Russian Circles!!! Nice Premier guitar!!! Amazing band! Had the pleasure of seeing them live by accident. Never heard of them before that, but wow they were incredible. Way better then the band they opened for.
I couldn't be happier with this video.
okay, did no one else think back to "zoolander," and the ridiculously tiny cell phone derek zoolander had when brian cook started talking about those tiny effects pedals that run on watch batteries? haha, i kind of thought they were joking at first.
Minus the wierd stickers,I want that guys baritone! Looks so sick!
I just saw these guys live with Mastodon and Eagle of Death Metal. They put on a great show.
Erik Harker an absolute stellar show. saw them in Memphis. every band was so solid. rare for me to see a show when every band kicks ass
I had never heard of these guys before the show and now I am a fan.
Finally!! Thanks for this one! Been waiting a while!
That section at 15:15 ... man that sounds like the band Choke, from Edmonton Canada. Love it..
came to see some les pauls, stayed for the guitar ideas!
Great rig rundowns, thank you Premiere Guitar :)
This is an incredible vid - thanks so much for making this!
I feel like the host is Ricky Bobby "I'm not sure what to do with my hands"
That being said, this video was amazing. Stoked to see Russian Circles up on here.
Good to see Jordan Wagner is back! Please put him back doing the demo/reviews, no offense but he is the only one who does a good job of the demo/reviews.
i was waiting a very long time for this
just wow, really appreciating his technical style and sound, songwriting and band, wow. without trying to gush. haha. such an awesome humble band and musicians!!!
We need a latest update from Russian Circles!!
Russian Circles is so awesome!
Welcome back Jordan Wagner!!!!
JORDAN, YOU'RE BACK!!!
Great rundown!
excellent interview and content
It feels good when i can identify with the sound and the style of the man
Hail the BLACK BEAUTY
Interviewer and interviewees did a great job. Loved it. Russian circles is an amaaaaaazing band.
Mikael Akerfeldt is a lot different in real life.
"I'm addicted to those knobs" - Mike Sullivan, 2013
Great video, loved the tapping demo!
So much to love.
Yeeeees!!! Nice surprise! Thanks! :D
Excellent job
Guess Mike sold his double cut away LP..he was touring with an arm injury a while ago from memory..think he played live with a broken arm or similar a couple of years ago..the boys were on fb talking about it
The Loucks is an incredible amp, had the privilege to try my uncle's. hoping I can afford one soon lol.
"i'll feel insecure about how low " damn thats what i want to hear when talking about amps
I love how they talk a shit ton about tone, then don't actually play anything. Like NOOOOO we don't want to ACTUALLY hear any of what you're talking about, that would make too much fucking sense!
But I'm still pretty fuckin excited about this new record. NIN was disappointing, QOTSA was "meh" Tool's taking forever. RC is my album of the year and its not even out yet. HAHA.
I spazed like a school girl when Mike was actually playing. Best part of this video. I'm sad we didn't get to hear Brian
Sounds like Mike is eating peanut butter sometimes while talking.
Hey I was wondering, I'm a huge John Mayer fan & I know that tons of other people are as well, idk how you guys get the bands you have to actually do a rig rundown, but if you could do a rig rundown on his current rig that he has on tour right now that would be totally amazing. :) Thank you!!
YES!
Many great albums have come out of Electrical Audio Studios. Neurosis, just to name one band. …Please tell me Steve Albini is either recording or mixing. Can't wait til the album drops.
what cool looking amps
Mahogany is actually, at least these days, a bright wood. It's not the Mahogany that just makes Gibson guitars a little darker. It's the pickups, scale length, neck dimensions, neck joint and even the nut they use. Mahogany, in other guitars with different craftsmanship can sound quite bright and airy, more like a Telecaster.
The dude has such a mellow attitude.
So is the Meatsmoke a bass head? Cuz both Mike and Brian have one, and ive looked at Verellen's website and I see no differentiation from guitar and bass amps.
How the fuck did i miss this ...
No wayyyy, you forgot to ask them when their new album will hit stores.
The Traynor TS50B is NOT a tube amp..
I was today years old when I learned Russian Circles actually from Chicago
YES.
I love these effin guys!!!!!
yeah this was great
i love russian circles. so much
Great video! Great band! Great questions! Just missed one!
Why is he wearing two button ups under each other? Lol 😂
Music happens at 15:04 :D
Brian is the man
For the longest time I thought he was feeding the Flux Drive with the Tone Burst and after watching this again for probably the hundredth time I realised it was the other way around! Anyone know if he's still using this set up?
3 monotone guys in the same room
...And he did just as good've a job doing the rig rundown as he does the gear reviews.
Yum those tweed Pro Juniors :)
I think you guys should do a rig rundown of Skillet's Seth Morrison and Korey Cooper! You won't be sorry!!
Lol the part at 17:49 isn't a polyrhythm
Your right, it isn't haha. Still awesome nonetheless!
Oscar Malmberg yeah, I think it's an example of counterpoint
he has a very powerful sound even at low volume
It hurts so much to hear the irony in Brian's words when he is explaining that the inlays in his First Act Baritone will prevent a future theft and, 8 years later, someone stole almost all the band's gear... talk about premonization. Damn, life sucks.
Simple mod, but I dig those amp knobs on his LP
Could you guys please do a Steve Albini Rig Rundown?
ram the manparts
