Violin has been used in Carnatic music forat least over 150 years. It is used as the accompaniment for all carnatic vocalists. There is a very well evolved playing tradition of this instrument in the carnatic system passed on from generation to generation. So much so that we forget that it came from the west. Yehudi Menuhin was a great admirer of carnatic violin maestro Lalgudi Jayaraman.

Namaskaaram Sir. Can you throw some light on what was the Accompaniment used before the Violin. I haven't got a clear answer for it yet from any sources.

Well these brothers started playing the violin right from the age of 3 and completed the milestone of 100 concerts before the age of 10. They've been performing around the world for more than 4 decades now. These brothers rub shoulders with maestros around the world includingUstad Zakir Hussain. They've performed a lot with him too. There are plenty more mind boggling videos of them. Also correction. This one is not an alapana. It's called "tana" whIch is a rythmic extension to the alapana which has no Rythm.

The bridge is modified for Carnatic playing and the curve is much flatter. The height of the bridge is also lessened so that the players can ply the joints and gamakas between notes as required by the Carnatic genre.
