      Jugalbandi essentially involves two (jugal or a couple)... and it's always a duet of solo musicians, literally means "entwined twins". It's possible with vocal-instrument combine, vocal-vocal, instrument-instrument combine with same as well as different instruments also!! Here there's no competition between the two... Rather they always try to create synergies/ collaboration, so as to make each & every listener feel blessed ...☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️

    Jayanthi Kumaresh has some fun videos as part of her Cup O' Carnatic series on her TH-cam channel. She takes western tunes and tries to corrrelates them to Indian ragas. Anybody interested in that sort of thing should go check them out. The Veena deserves more attention than it gets. It seems like an insanely difficult instrument to learn.

    The veena is not a percussion instrument.. It's a main instrument that's the center piece of much of Indian music..The acoustic veena is phenomenal.. My mom had this really old and beautiful one from here younger days and it sounded divine. The instrument that Kaushiki was playing was a tambura which is a bass instrument used to keep the rest of the instruments in rythum...

    Thanks so much for sharing my most fave instrument in the whole world. The ancient veena. Powerful, primordial, resonant like church bells & yet can be sweet like a child. Awesome to see 2 masters playing together. Jayanthi is def a maestro in her vina playing. And might i add in the same calibre as ustadji in how lightly her fingers fly.
    I'd love to now see ustadji lead the jugalbandi conversation & jayanthi reply back on her vina

      Couldn't agree more. Veena or specifically Saraswati Veena is a string instrument used generally for South Indian music. It is the instrument adorned by goddess Saraswati, the Hindu God of learning. Dr. Jayanthi Kumaresh is considered as the Sachin Tendulkar of Saraswati Veena. You guys must react to another video of her where she tries to explain the similarity in Beethoven's composition and some ragas of Carnatic music through the Veena.

    Guys, you have seriously confused all the instruments! And some of the comments here can only add to the confusion. This instrument here is Veena, arguably the oldest instrument in Indian Classical Music. And there are variants of it as some of the comments here have illustrated. The one Kaushiki was playing in her music video, or you will notice being played by/with almost every classical musician, is a drone instrument called Tanpura. You cannot play a tune on it. The instrument she referred to as her favourite was Sarangi. All three are of course string instruments. Hope that brings some clarity.

      By the way the instrument Jayanthi Ma'm is playing is the Saraswathi veena. It is a melodic instrument not necessarily percussion. Also it is acoustic not electric as most indian instruments are, she has tuned it such a way to sound like an electric instrument. Also the one kaushiki ma'm uses in her singing videos similar to this is instrument is a tanpura, it does not have any frets and it just gives the base notes of the scale for the vocalists and the instrumentalists to have a reference and be in scale

    • @ashokr
      @ashokr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      By the way this instrument veena is called the queen of instruments. There is another instrument called the Rudra veena which has two resonating chambers unlike one in the case of Saraswathi veena. That is called the king of instruments.

  • @craditya
    @craditya 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Its a veena - one of my favourite instruments and one of the oldest instruments in the world- legend says even God Saraswati - one of the the Trinity Goddesses in Hinduism plays the instrument! And the Ragam is Keeravani- one of my favourite sampoorna ragas- it is called minor scale in Western Music particularly guitar! It has all the 7 swaras! Ive seen them live in Chennai - you should come over for the world's largest Classical Carnatic and in general music festival in December every year!

    the instrument she is playing is veena. The veena is among the oldest of Indian musical instruments. From the references to Vedic writings, it can date back to around the first millennium B.C. Temple sculptures from the 2nd century B.C. show a type of veena being played. React to rudra veena it was the instrument said to be created by shiva for parvati his wife.

    If looks can be deceiving, it goes straight to Jayanthi ma'm. She started like a breeze and ended it like a Hailstorm :)
    Initially Ustad ji was slowing down and i realized it later only that it is the calm before storm :)
    Veena especially is an instrument of "BLISS", it is known as of goddess Saraswati herself, who owns all the art form and wisdom as per Indian culture.
    This instrument is key for most of the Carnatic music concert.

    The String accoustic instrument here is a VEENA and the Purcussion is Tabla. Veena has a big dome for a prolonged vibration sound effect like an electric guitar has... But the beauty of a Veena is its intermediary sound called "Shruti" which makes the overall environment so divine and you just get hypnotized with its magic ...same as in the case of a flute .

    Rick & Korbin. A genuine thanks to you guys from an Indian. You know it's sad that quite a lot Indian youth are unaware of this rich Indian musical heritage and history or not that interested. The influence of Western music coupled with the fact that it takes a huge amount of time to master this form of music(and nobody has time these days) is making us forget our identity more and more. So your videos are not only introducing sub-continent classical music to Western people it is hopefully making a new generation of Indian youth get interested. Because I truly believe there is time and space to co-exist for anything and everything including music.

    The instrument is the Veena used for Carnatic music. It is not Zakir Hussain repeating the note from her, but both based on a specific Rag.

    There is an 8 beat rythm (called Aadi taal - taal ~ beat) that is continuously running and they both are always synchronized to it. You can notice that when she taps her hand when she plays her part and takes a break. When they both play together they are still in sync with each other using the Aadi taal.

    That's Veena ! U know it, from VeenaSriVani playing the " Breathless"! Here played in South Indian classical style. You can notice ,how the lady Veena player played the way Kausiki sang. This is an ancient Mythical Divine Musical instrument. Singers use " Thannpura"! Veena is a Main musical instruments not necessarily an accompaniment.

    Tabala played by Zakir Hussain is a Hindustani classical music instrument. Where as Veena Played by Jayanti Kumaresh is a Carnatic classical music instrument. Hindustani and Carnatic classical music is of 2 different types of Classical music in India. Jayanti Kumaresh is a great and famous artist.
    Jugalbandi is like combining or bringing to types of genres of music types together.

    Jugalbandi is like duel in Indian clasical music - where two musicians are compititive as well as complementary with each other with their instruments.

    you kept saying it sounds like guitar. As I recall, the guitar morphed from one of these string instruments, over its journey via Persia, Arabia to Europe. Note these instruments have been developed and used in India for centuries. And just like Zero, math, algebra, the decimal number system have travelled from India via the persians and arabs (i.e. before they islamised) to europe and US

    Jugalbandi means duet. It's between two musicians of any type that play off one another's presentation of the same piece of music. Each giving space for the other to flourish, grow and showcase their skills. Yes it is a flirting experience in an cosmic sense.
