The great heathen army is main reason for England to unify. Vikings established the danelaw. Alfred the Great stopped the Viking advance at the battle of Eddington. Eventually Wessex would fight back the Vikings and Æthelstan would become the first King of the English. But they wouldn't quite be free of the Vikings yet.
