Rylanor is the only character who managed to turn traitors into loyalists
Bit of a stretch. I don't see these Thousand Sons wanting to return to the Imperium with what the Emperor has done to their Legion and world. But relating to someone who was hit by an unfair slaughter they could. Besides they are denying a follower of Slaanesh, and being part of a crafty plan which would please Tzeentch.

Rylanor waiting centuries to take a swing at a demi-god, the true embodiment of "Dread-Naught."
It's not just that Rylanor rejected Fulgrim, it's that three other marines, all veterans of the Heresy, saw the two of them and rejected Fulgrim as well. The Primarch was found lacking in comparison to one of his own marines, and that rejection would have had a massive effect on these psykically empowered demigods.
That's probably exactly why Magnus sent them

One minor correction. Rylanor was supposed to stay during the battle at Istvan 3 but when Saul Tarvitz asked to stay because of his suspicions Rylanor led his company instead. So he shares Ferris Manus and Nathaniel Garro’s status as being one of those people who the traitor’s desperately wanted on their side.
I commented this as well but you were first I’ll delete my comment. It’s an important part of the story though.

Furthermore Saul Tarvitz lied to Rylanor about his intensions. Tarvitz knew something was wrong but he could not tell Rylanor so he came up with a lie about a dead friend and his last wish or something like that. It was said that Rylanor could detect a lie and he thought about Tarvitzs request for a long time. But he agreed with him because he knew something was wrong as well. And Rylanor knew that Tarvitz would do the right thing.

Pretty sure Fulgrim was waiting for someone to find Rhylanor, that way he could make a dramatic entrance and have an audience for the confrontation. Such a drama queen attention desperate cam girl.

As a servant of Slaanesh he really is a cam-girl, all that's missing is a tip operated toy.
Rylanor was so cool, he inspired three traitors to redeem themselves even if it meant their deaths.

Something small I've always appreciated about Rylanor's last stand is that Vistario addresses Fulgrim as 'Primarch', his military rank/noble title despite Fulgrim being a eldritch daemon snake monster that cant be sensibly called a space marine anymore. It shows that the Thousand Son's are significantly less messed up and more self aware than most chaos marines that they'd act as if Slaanesh's champion is their military superior and not a demigod.
The ones not drunk on Chaos power tend to be the most self aware all the Space Marines 10:17 . Loyalists included.
It can also be a barbed honour calling him by his old and venerated rank (and one that ties him back to the father he betrayed and to the sons he led astray into damnation). It has that impersonal level too by not addressing him by his name which might be an slight, might not. Who knows since he is a daemon of pride now
Rylanor permanently weakened fulgrim. A guy who prided himself on his charm and charisma, fulgrim was not able to sway the thousand sons to his side in the fight compared to Chad Rylanor. His ego is hurt and as a demon, he is physically weakened because of it.
Fantastic! Now we know how to defeat Fulgrim permanently: Celebrity Roast, 40k Edition! Dorn and Russ would _annihilate_ Fulgrim within about five minutes; Guilliman, Corax, El'Jonson, Khan, and Vulkan probably wouldn't even get their turns!

Although not confirmed in the short story, it could also be that Fulgrim fell out of favor with Slaanesh for his defeat here. Slaanesh is a very fickle chaos god, and wants his(?)...her(?)... it's minions to cause degeneracy where they can. In the face of chad Rylanor Fulgrim failed completely to present his freak god any form of degeneracy and Rylanor even converted traitor marines to his way of chad, thus not just denying, but defying the ways of Slaanesh. '
In the face of such failure it is not unthinkable that Fulgrim could loose favor.

The reason Magnus sent them is because that would hurt fulgim more. Instead of being blown up without a chance to say his piece, he failed to convince his own son, and was then betrayed by the thousand sons marines
Perhaps some sliver of good remains in daemon Magnus or was influenced by one of his virtuous shards (or he just liked dunking on Fulgrim - possibly all three)

Fulgrim 'needed' an audience, that is why Magnus had to send Vistario and his boys. The audience witnessed Fulgrims failure, which made it even so much more devestating.

This quote from the book contextualized the Isstvan atrocity even more. It’s not just four legions killing their loyalist elements. It’s sons being betrayed by the father they looked up to and trusted (maybe not the World Eaters). To the Emperor’s Children, Fulgrim was a peak that they sought to reach. Perfection they could never achieve. He saved the legion from doom and gave them new purpose and life. And he sent them to die on Isstvan

We can all thank Rylanor for permanently weakening Fulgrim seeing as he is made entirely of soul stuff and solid ego means he was actually pretty weakened by his defeat.
Amen to that, ChakatBombshell. I still cling to hope that Magnus and the XV Legion shall be redeemed.... As Magnus is meant to sit upon the Golden Throne, either after The Emperor ascends to Godhood or gets rejuvenated back to life, sorta like Roboute did. Kind regards.

@@stefanblagojevic8616 I really do think that Magnus can be redeemed. It's just the matter of retrieving the Noble Shard. His repeated incursions to the Warp were fueled by a desire for knowledge. Now that he's actually figured out how shitty the Warp is, i feel like if he was whole, he'd just drop the whole Daemon Prince thing and use his powers more carefully.
Afterall all, psykers gonna psyke, that much is true. But with a little more restraint and mindfullness, there are psykers that can use their warp shit without fear of getting assraped by daemons no matter what kind or how powerful there are. Afterall, Malcador and Big E are psykers and they literally aren't worried about being corrupted by Chaos. It's even more impressive with Malcador who is a human. Magnus coulf have achieved this feat since he's an abhuman, if only he had been patient about learning shit.

Rylanor crushed Fulgrim's pride so utterly that the Daemon Primarch of the Emperor's Children has not shown up in the lore since.
just imagine this: fulgrim, the most charismatic man ever. who did not have to fight a single battle on his homeworld due to his persuasive charismatic persona, now not only is thwarted by his own son, but a bunch of guys who are his allies, are comitting suicide just to allow that... that shows how deep and far he has fallen

You pretty perfectly sum up why I love the Thousand Sons pretty well. They never turned to Chaos willingly, and they're mostly just trying to survive and improve their shitty situation, unlike most Chaos legions.

Rylanor,a *single dreadnought* who managed to make a beacon that can send a signal across the stars out of some weird ass sonic weaponry and managed to make a world ending virus bomb out of nearly nothing.Not only did he do it by himself,but he did it with that GIANT ASS DREADNOUGHT CLAW,his precision with it must've been insane...
Plus he had ten thousand years to work with. Whatever clunkiness his Dreadnought body had before is now smoothened out.
Fulgrim admits it actually wounded his pride.
That has major implications, because as a demon (prince) of Slaanesh, Fulgrim *IS* his pride. Rylanor may have given him the closest thing a demon can get to a terminal illness (and I don't mean catching COVID at the airport).
The epic story of Rylanor and his last stand is, in my mind, one of the greatest stories in sci-fi. There is so much meaning wrapped up in it. One of the greatest morals of the story - Some things are absolutely worth dying for.
You're right, you know, about traitor Marines being much more interesting when they're still capable of good. They make better bad guys when they're actually characters, after all.
He also had an Iron Hands buddy that he argued about the merits of flesh vs cybernetics.

Its in Angel Exterminatus, one of the Iron Hands that are tracking Perturabo and Fulgrim remembers an old friend of his while fighting the Emperor's Children.
Magnus saw rylanor and was like I got ya homie.
I always thought that the Emperors Childrens fall into Chaos was because of their quest for that space coke and puss', but after watching this it seems way more as a tragedy. What was supposed to be the perfect exemplars of humanity, became models of a mother-in-laws worst nightmare
I believe that Magnus respected rylanor and wanted that he have It his revenge
When you are a deamon prince powered by god of pride, failing so hard to the point of convincing your allies to kill themselves just so they dont have to deal with your shit certainly hurts more than virus bombs.
The Ancient Awaits. To hell with with the Night Lords’ “We are coming for you”, Rylanor made his prey come to him.
The entire story is the greatest example of what is 40k. A hopeless fight against the dark for a small moment of victory.

Just wanna say man that you were the guy that introduce me to so many other Warhammer TH-camrs (Baldemort and Stringstorm) and your passion for Rylanor way back when also made me watch the Stringstorm vid 1k times! As per the short story Rylanor's psychic anger burst a Thousand Sons secondary heart as they marched to the center of the cavern.
I’m going to speak to the Iron Fathers. Rylanor deserves a memorial at the very least, for being the last of our Brothers of the 3rd still worthy of respect and reverence.

Couple of things.
1. He didn't grab Vistario, he grabbed one of the other two. Vistario was face-to-face with the cannon.
2. It wasn't being defeated that got to Fulgrim, it was Rylanor's denial of his supposed perfect form that got Fulgrim's goat.
If Rylanor came back, chaos and all enemies of the imperium would be doomed.
Rylanor as One of the Legion of Damned Is horrifying sight to behold if the God Emperor. Give him service onces more

The reason he sent Vistario is simple. He needed for Rylanor to REJECT Fulgrim. As the song implies, Rylanor had nothing to say to Fulgrim, he was going to detonate the bomb. But if the Raptorae in Vistario's retuine stopped the bomb for long enough, then Rylanor would be forced to answer Fulgrims taunts and show him that no matter what he does or says, he will not sway the Ancient of Rites. The Virus bomb would od nothing to Fulgrim, but being rejected so thoroughly would REALLY hit him hard.

The Thousand Sons are my 2nd favorite traitor legion, alongside the World Eaters as I think they are the saddest ones and thus most compelling of empathy.
The Thousand Sons were forced into chaos, and the World Eaters primarch Angron never had a chance to be his best self, and guide the World Eaters to be a force of good.
I love this lore, it is absolutely classic! Also, this especially reminds me how mostly Chaos fans will cry about things not being "grim dark" enough when like pervy daddy Fulgrim eats a virus bomb like taco Tuesday or Ka'Banda dies on the regular for the 23rd time and its like "Tee Hee Hee, 40k so gwim darky!'. But some quirky stuff happens to Guilleman and its time to call the whambulance because 40k is not grim dark anymore.
A grief stricken and betrayed son waiting millennia just for the chance to strike out against the primarch he once called father before dying is pretty damn grim dark. There's also been tons of grim dark moments with Guilliman with him being constantly in doubt about almost everything and feeling deeply alone. These people that complain just aren't seeing what I'm seeing

In my head canon, the corruption of Fulgrim along with the majority of his Legion and expeditiary contingent was the result of a hectic Daemon summoning orgy ritual as a final fuck you from the soon to be extinct Laer.
