Neither can they, which is why they spend 40% of their salary on car PCP payments.
It's crazy as well because a lot of the people I know who regularly cycle actually paid more for their bicycle than I did for my motorcycle!
I think they've probably also been reading about these dangerous cyclists and how something must be done. Can't wait for the new laws to come in to put a stop to this sort of thing! 😉

Of all the people to try and educate with her version about the how, what, when, why and where of road use, she chose Ashley, priceless.

I have no idea, what the mad woman was on about other than the fact that she probably had to slow down briefly,because of another road user ahead.
The only thing I see that he could have done better is that he could have moved slightly to his left when he passed the parked cars to give her more room to overtake. When you do that they take it as a sign of respect and they usually appreciate it and steer well away from you.

Im not a cyclist, but I've heard plenty of drivers moan about cyclists as if they don't belong on the road. Disgusting sense of entitlement, and the dangerous overtakes too.
When they see a cyclist doing something wrong, they tar all cyclists with the same brush, but when they see another motorist doing something wrong, it's just that make of car or type of motorist that does stuff wrong.
To be fair, some cyclists should not be allowed on the road, but the same applies to all road users from pedestrians to class1 truckers.

Typical sense of arrogant entitlement. This women is convinced that roads are made for cars. I love cycling in most European countries because this type of driver is much less common. What have we done wrong in Britain to have so many entitled and arrogant drivers?
We attached social class to mode of transportation and we're a nation of victims.
It's partly the infrastructure as well - a lack of segregated bicycle lanes to avoid bikes mixing with cars in the first place, and rather narrow roads on top of that.

@@ricequackers It can depend on the relative speeds on those roads. Cities like Tokyo have such low relative speeds for cars that they don't really need to build much bicycle infrastructure there. But at the same time, I really like how cities like Amsterdam and Copenhagen deal with it.

This is exactly why it's not worth the interaction. They will just talk, sorry, shout over you and not listen to your side anyway so it's completely pointless. Best thing to do is just sail past and politely say, "No thank you!" and continue on your way. All it serves is to get you riled up and then you're not concentrating on the road etc...

@@goodyeoman4534 It's even more important in the work place, I used to do similar. If any kind of argument was even remotely on the cards I'd simply be nice and ask them to go away or I would leave. This way if any kind of complaint was made to HR all they have is you either being nice or walking away which obviously results in nothing happening to you. Of course I knew it was winding them up even more than arguing was so it was a win win for me!
Another beauty was just agreeing with them but saying it in a way whereby they knew I was not agreeing with them. "Yeah sure, you're right and I'm wrong".... that would really get them riled but they could do nothing. 😂😂

@@CraigNiel Yes that's a great tactic. I've done the same. I say something like, "I'd like you to leave me alone, please." Or "You're harassing me now, please leave me in peace."
Naturally they'll make up a pack of lies, so a witness would be good. But if there's no witness it will just be your word against theirs anyway and people who lie usually unravel under questioning.
Very good advice. It can be hard to behave that grown up when someone has just intentionally put you in danger though. When drivers have intentionally cut me up I've found it nearly impossible to not stop next to them at the next lights and have a good screaming match.
A most liberating feeling while driving is accepting that you can't safely overtake a cyclist in some situations, nor need to. It frees you from the stress of putting your foot down on the wrong side of the road and cutting in before a bollard etc.
Sorry Lady... I'm a Bikeability Cycling Instructor (Full time Job), and when making any manoeuvre or passing through a street of parked cars.... Primary position, Centre of the whole lane is the correct, Legal, Safest position to to be riding in. Unless there is an angry uneducated car driver around who doesn't read up on these things 😁👍🚴

Don’t take this the wrong way but I’m sort of glad you’ve had this interaction and I’m very grateful to you for sharing it. I get this exact type of grief as well when I’m doing absolutely nothing wrong whilst cycling. The patronising way people drive dangerously, scare you, then try and explain their wrong understanding of how the road rules work is infuriating. It’s also super stressful to deal with when you’re out on the road just on a bike being criticised by someone in a 2-tonne vehicle. I completely agree with you that it stinks
The cyclists who always stay in the middle of the road are the ones who get this kind of interaction. It's never happened to me because I stay further to the left and drivers seem to appreciate that.
@@dtz1000 dude you’re literally making the same mistake as the driver in the video. The middle of a lane is called primary position and it’s an important part of safe cycling. It’s also - crucially - not the same place as the middle of the road.
@dtz1000 there is a time and a place I never get abuse but I don't take the piss just check it's safe before moving out or will signal I want to use the whole road and I can mean all the road . Then once risk is not there pull back left and simply thanks usually helps.
@@dtz1000 If you'd stayed in secondary position or "On the left" on the road in this video you'd be putting yourself and others in danger. It's passing a school at closing time, we can see children walking out of the school. There are many parked cars which are active, with doors opening and closing. The chance of a child darting out from in between parked cars is high, you could cycle into them and knock them over. Also the chance of an inattentive driver or passenger opening a door on you is high. You need to maintain primary position (middle of your lane) in this situation because this is proper road use.
Do NOT ride your bike in a way to please drivers. We are NOT guests on the road, we have every right to be on the road and we have a duty of care to ourselves and others. Ride your bike in a way to be safe, regardless of how much that annoys entitled drivers like the one we saw in the video.

As a cyclist, you meet someone like this on virtually every single journey. She’s the sort of driver that only knows one way out of her estate to her sister Linda‘s house. And even though it means driving an extra half a mile that way,that’s the way she will always go, because otherwise she’s out of her comfort zone. Also, she never dares to go on a motorway. Seriously, never.
I know somebody like this, terrified of "MOTORWAYS" but ok on the A12 apparently! Apart from that, thick, unpleasant and super entitled!

Over the years I've learned that interaction with drivers is never worth it, but I did LOL when Ashley told her he was a professional instructor trainer.
Hats off for taking the time to experience cycling and sharing. That is very representative, you meet someone like that everytime you cycle. It's a small percentage thankfully, but enough to meet one every trip.
Does the lady not see that it is the parked cars causing the obstruction and not the cyclist? Also it is the middle of the lane not the road.
A huge number of drivers would drive down a narrow road with cars parked tightly on either side, then blame a cyclist for holding up traffic and never once think about what they are saying.

It's hard to believe that years ago I was like this lady, but thankfully, I realized my actions were wrong and unsafe. I addressed my issues and transformed into the calm driver I am today.

My granddad had a conviction for “Wanton and furious cycling” he was so proud of it, had it framed on the wall.
Thanks for showing this - it’s one of the common reasons I’m shouted at while cycling to work - I use primary when it’s needed for visibility and safety. I never want to be “in the way”, though as seems to have happened here, often it doesn’t actually speed up their journey, but simply causes danger and unnecessary stress.
She tries to overtake when there isn't enough space but you're riding dangerously lol, I'm dumbfounded. I hope she did look up your channel she could learn a lot.
It's typical behaviour from unintelligent/narcissistic people to always shift the blame onto someone else for their own shortcomings.
Today, the 31st May 2024, at around 2:45 p.m., I experienced a disturbing incident while cycling past the junction where Mere Lane and Heyworth Street meet in Liverpool. As I was cycling towards North Liverpool Academy closing up to the junction, a black Ford Focus speeded past me and cut in front of me, attempting to turn left. I called out to the driver to watch out, and he suddenly stopped in the middle of the junction. Then, he started screaming racist phrases at me, shouting things like "You don't belong in the UK," "Get out of my country," and "I will take your bike off you, you twat", and many other recist phrases and sweating.
As a brown person living in Liverpool for 8 years, this is the first time I've encountered such blatant racism. There were a total of three lads in the car, all in their mid 20s, I was outnumbered, so I didn't say anything back, fearing that they would probably do something horrible to me. I know that I could have just kept quiet and stopped that matter from escalating. My only regret now is that I couldn't note down that car's plate number.
It's to be expected now, In the current climate.
And I thought just being a cyclist (white) was bad enough. This is disgusting! Sounds like you didn't have a camera, which is a sham as I would hope the police would do something about that.

There’s some right horrible people around these days. The amount of times I’m hearing or reading about someone who has a slightly darker complexion being accused of “being just off a dinghy”, or “you don’t belong here” is crazy.

Entitled cyclist! Engineering content by cycling in the middle of the road! Just ignore the driver, honestly, it does us proper cyclists no good when you talk back to a driver. Just respect that they're the ones with the driving licence, who pay road tax and make it a non-event. Don't increase animosity between drivers and cyclists, just get out of their way and get on with your day! 😉

We all pay road tax in a way even if you don't drive, car tax is like emissions tax which is what people pay for polluting the planet. I pay zero tax on my Fiesta as my emissions are in a top category.
In my 50 year + driving career, I have noticed it is the drivers at fault that do the best to prove themselves right by arguing and through road rage. When in fact they are just digging a bigger hole for themselves. This lady is a perfect example of being in the wrong, but tries to argue herself right.

This is why I ride with no helmet, on a naturally aspirated bike, with no mirrors and with the road sense of a wild animal. It is just easier that way. No altercations needed with the car dependent.

As an advanced driver and rider , I did find it amusing when my bicycle was forcefully stopped by a Rangerover driver so that his wife could lecture me about cycling. Tried to explain advanced positioning but they had fingers int their ears so sent the footoage to the police who are having the driver prosecuted.

Her priority certainly appears to be maintaining her own speed rather than safely operating her vehicle. Hence calling Ashley dangerous - as though by being "in her way" he is forcing her to run him over or brake, and braking apparently isn't an option
@@northeastcyclist1507 You put that very well. Basically, she was annoyed that Ashley was simply "there". What a surprise that other road users are legitimately out and about at the same time as her. Someone needs to explain to her that it's called "traffic" and "sharing the roads".
Wonder how she gets to her car, she will be a driver who thinks pedestrians are people who do-not own a car.
When the police investigate incidents I've reported and say "surely you must have done something to start it" - hopefully watching this makes it crystal clear there are drivers who will whinge and start something over absolutely nothing
I've just got back from a week cycling in Denmark and the attitude of drivers there is so different to here - like when I've ridden in France, it took a long time for me to trust them enough to stop at junctions where I had right of way as I'm so used to people like this woman seeing me on a bike and either acting as though I'm invisible or have no right to be there.
I'm a daily driver at home - I wish I cycled more often, but I get really fed up of having near misses or incidents like these almost every time I get the bike out. It's just not worth the stress 😥

Years ago I rode London to Paris, and spent the last day worried about what it would be like cycling in France, especially Paris. I was surprised at how much more considerate French drivers were. On the country roads I didn't have a single close pass and Paris felt safer to ride in than London.
@@deanwaller1029 The French are amazing at overtaking cyclists - even better than the Danes in my experience. They tend to give you as much space as they possibly can, whether it be on a busy urban road or on a country lane.
It's worth pointing out that she did wait until you moved over before overtaking. It doesn't seem there was any ill will here, just a lack of understanding. As some others have said, this could've been a good opportunity for education, such as a short explanation about the benefits of riding in primary position

Wow! This would make a great case study for unpicking appropriate road positioning and safe passing of cyclists etc. Not to mention a whole host of what not to do if you're a driver! Being 'buzzed' and shouted at by motorists is incredibly intimidating, even for the hardiest of urban cyclists. This driver seemed more of the dangerously ignorant variety than the malicious/aggressive types but they all play a massive part in preventing so many more people getting out and enjoying cycling! Those of us that are 'happy' riding in traffic encounter dangerous drivers on most trips (a very small percentage to be fair - in my experience - but it only takes one etc.). Personally speaking I hardly register most of it now as it's just the norm, sadly. Do we need proper cycling infrastructure (segregated) to really get away from the cyclists vs. cars culture here in the UK? Great video and happy cycling!

@@AshleyNeal-JustCycling I don't really have a problem with letting someone know they're on video. I think it can actually work very well to calm down a situation - I even managed to ward off an axe wielding mad-man once when I pointed out he was on camera. It's also possibly good practise under the GDPR!

He says often to make it a non event, but stopping to speak to the driver made it more of an event than needed to be. Nothing said would change her mind that she was in the wrong.
But we all get frustrated sometimes and argue with drivers as cyclists. Nice to see Ash not make it a non event for one moment.

I know I shouldn't really, but it makes me feel better, and if someone does come at me for smiling and waving at them it probably won't look too good for them.

Thanks for the clip. It really does highlight what a lot of cyclists have to deal with from some elements. I’ve been on the receiving end of some stouters over the years. I’ve now given up responding as too many can’t process what I’m saying due to anger or a point blank refusal to accept they may be wrong.
Personally I wouldn’t have interacted with this individual and just held back and forced them to move on with my silence. I can be quite stubborn when it comes to a standoff. I was stood for 5 minutes as a bloke ranted while leaning out through his window. He gave up as car horns started blaring.
That’s what cyclists have to put up with everyday!

I can vividly remember every time some nut job in a cars yell at me or swerves at me.

She was right, you were out too far from the kerb. I'm both a cyclist and a driver. When cycling, I aim to give cars enough space to overtake me without having to cross the white line - this isn't always possible but it is a courtesy to other road users. You were in the middle of the road, camera on & not doubt hoping to record a reaction for your channel. The normal place for a bicycle is on the left-hand-side of the lane, not the middle of the road (unless someone is getting out of a parked car on the left etc).
Sadly, this is far too common on tge roads. Drivers just do not understand primary position. I think it needs to be made part of the driving test. 'Where should the cyclist ride here, primary or secondary?'

Just insist that potential drivers send in their level 3 Bikeability certificate when they apply for a provisional licence. 85% of cyclists also drive so we'd have better trained cyclists (you can spot the untrained cyclists - they're the ones riding in the gutter like that driver wants) and all drivers would be aware of what it's like to cycle on roads and why cyclists ride where they do.
It would need an exemption for those physically unable to ride a bike obviously, but that's easily arranged.

Yesterday I saw a driver merge onto the wrong side of the road and then aggressively beep a cyclist who she almost ran over 😂 there's just nothing going on in some people's brains.
Theres a new intolerance forming from car drivers getting annoyed and frustrated with other car drivers, simply because you are respecting a cyclists right to be on the road. I have had nunerous occasions where i am patiently and calmly waiting to overtake a cyclist at a safe point - only to have some one driving up my car's backside because they want to get past.
Definitely! I don't drive but as a passenger in my husband's car a few months ago, he was waiting patiently for a safe place to overtake a cyclist on a country road when someone overtook both our car and the cyclist on a blind bend. They got lucky with the oncoming traffic they couldn't see...
You handled that extremely well. It must have been hard to not lose your temper when she was insisting on arguing in the middle of the road, blocking other traffic (the irony)
one of my favourite all-time bad driver interactions was a man who angrily shouted "I HAD TO BREAK THE SPEED LIMIT TO OVER TAKE YOU, youprick!" as he was waiting at traffic lights.
Doing a full service on my MTB so driving to work. Where is all this impatience coming from? Had someone overtake me during a right hand turn...yep during the turn! In another 30 mph zone tonight, far down the road was a car wanting to reverse from a driveway. Household member was assisting driver. No worries for me so on the approach I slowed down to let them manoeuvre out. Had stopped for about 4 seconds. Massive blast of horn behind, large SUV on 2023 plate then accelerated hard to pass. What the blazes is going on?

I mostly agree with what you say Ashley, but in your description, this stands out;
I don't think anyone should treat adults the same way as children, especially not on the road, as when I'm out on the road and I see children cycling etc, I'm expecting them to make a mistake (like falling over), or do something silly(like a wheelie), maybe to impress their friends, when I see an adult cycling, I expect them the follow the laws much better, but if they do break the law I expect it to be either running a red light, or cycling with excessive speed, as opposed to going the wrong way or falling off.
So for example, if someone close passed an adult cyclist, I wouldn't think "wow imagine if that was a small child with cerebral palsy with no arms!" I know I'm going slightly over the top with the example, but my point is don't play the "what/imagine if" game, you'll always feel you've won, even if you're completely in the wrong.
Also here's some more constructive criticism; I don't feel that you represented cyclists as best as you could've in that altercation, with the way that you spoke. It felt like you was trying to stimulate the argument instead of either calming down the other party, or backing out...
(note that I've said "I don't think..." and "I don't feel", these are *opinions* and if you don't agree with them, fine. If you'd like to discuss them, fine. But don't be a bellend about it)
Ashley! You prevented this unfortunate women from accelerating past you, just so that she could stand on her brakes at the fast approaching road junction. Putting dangerous overtakes aside, How expensive does petrol need to become before these types realise how daft they are. Wasn’t even in a hurry to get to her destination. Ashley, I thought you disagreed that "challenge is acceptable" and a "plague that's spreading" and " can lead to conflict"? You've criticised others and yet here you are arguing with a driver against your own advice. Maybe having cycled for a bit you now have a better understanding of the danger and hostility cyclists face every day on the roads and that "challenge" is more often than not instigated by drivers.

Thanks for showing this. It seems to me CPD-style training for road users is needed for improved safety, for example to update them to expect primary position by others (and expect drivers to stop at roundabout exits). Personally I hadn't heard about primary position except your videos and it certainly wasn't mentioned when I was getting my license decades ago.

I was commuting to work one sunny morning. I was riding in a bus/cycle lane there was a whole separate lane for cars (it was 6 am and very quiet) when a guy in a Jaguar pulled alongside and shouted ‘Get off the road’! He then drove off, I thought nothing of it until the same thing happened the following morning.
‘Get off the road!’ - I replied ‘I’m in a cycle lane.’ That was like a red rag to a bull, he swerved into my lane forcing me to stop and then proceeded to threaten me with ‘a bloody good hiding’ if he saw me riding along there again the next day. I noted his reg number and reported him to the police. I never saw him again, but it honestly ruined commuting by bike for me. To be threatened with physical violence from a stranger for simply riding a bike correctly and doing nothing wrong is disgusting.
I’ve had other similar experiences from van drivers again for doing nothing wrong in the end I decided to just give up commuting on a bike. I still cycle for pleasure but purely off road where the dog walkers and joggers hate me instead lol. Can’t win in the UK if you’re on a bike and it stinks.
Wear steel toe work boots and motorcycle gloves while riding. I've found it to be a good deterrent against stuff like this.
well played ash, from someone thats done 6,000 miles in 3 years on their bike (mad ive never been anywhere really just dont drive anymore) and i see this attitude every week. Theres zero point in arguing, you can prove them wrong. leave them lost for words. and theyll still go home thinking they were in the right. idiots breed idiots and well, we are where we are < 3 safe riding bud

This sort of thing happens way too often cycling. Too many entitled drivers out there. They really think all cyclists don’t drive and don’t understand the Highway Code. The other day got shouted out just like this after being on the road for the 500 yard stretch where I wasn’t able to use the bike path. This is really how long it takes to get abuse from some people that you can ride for 5 miles hassle free bar the 500 yards on a road.

As a cyclist Ive realised there’s no point in engaging with idiots in cars because they never listen to reason. Always think they know best. Majority of car drivers are considerate but there’s still a lot of idiots out there unfortunately.
The same attitude as a woman I encountered last week. I was cycling in crawling moving traffic, holding in place behind the car in front. The road is one way but has a cycle lane for bikes to come in the other direction. The car behind me started blaring its horn. I wasn’t sure at first if it was directed at me or they’d seen someone they knew but as we had stopped I turned to look back. The driver got out to yell at me that I should be in the cycle lane. I pointed out it was for people cycling in the other direction and, once we were moving again was able to gesture to the road marking with an arrow going against our flow. I wish I had been quick witted enough to point out that she a) was using her horn illegally b) was purporting to direct traffic without legal authority to do so, all while directing me to cycle in the wrong lane. I’m perplexed what her issue was. I wasn’t holding her up. We were queuing for traffic lights. If I had got out of her way in the other lane she would have gained perhaps 3 metres. It seemed very much that she had a cars are superior complex.

Ashley I love the fact you ride a bike and give good sound advice to people on how to drive safely as a driving instructor. I was cycling to work and got abuse the other day for overtaking cars in traffic that were not moving because the driver simply was not happy that someone who is vulnerable on a bike has the nerve to pass them on the road like a motorbike would have done. A pedestrian walking past said “What was his problem” I just sighed and said some people are just like this…there is a sadly a minority of people who hate people on bikes and will do anything to hurl abuse. Its confrontational and can get nasty - its utter madness. I am not a food cycling driver flying around passing through red lights, i also drive a car as well and respect the rules of the road as do i teach my two young children on cycling on the road. Just doing my bit for my health and the environment. Keep up the great content, sadly the lady in the fiesta will still see she is right. As I say so many people are in a hurry to get nowhere just to save a fee seconds to then hit a another red light. We need to all tone down the aggression!

@@WerdnaLiten Agreed. I'd estimate that at least 30-40% don't indicate, 90% don't check their blind spot when setting off, at least 50% start changing lanes on a motorway before belatedly indicating, probably about 5% regularly jump reds.
Interesting seeing you converse with this woman when oftentimes you talk about making things a non event. She was definitely in the wrong. Your response shows that sometimes, it’s nigh on impossible to treat every incident as a cyclist as a non-event.

As a cyclist i really appreciate your remark, i always try to bite ky tongue but its shocking some if the things ive experienced riding on the road.
So, Ashley at long last now acknowledges why cyclist bikecam reporters have the attitude towards errant drivers that they do. They have to let drivers know when they've done wrong, so when they get the NIP in the post they know what exactly they did, where and when.
Don't forget though I didn't start the interaction. That's a big difference.

To be fair, you didn't really need to stop so close to their open window, especially as you were turning left. I don't think you tried very hard not to talk to the driver (and I don't blame you, I would have told them what for too!).
