I love to watch this drive - The u-shaped valley at Your first viewpoint is great, (this glacier must have been enormous) and nearly 12000 feet above sea Level!!! Our highest mountain Galhøpiggen: is only 8100feet - Thank you very much, the video is very well done - (I crossed Hardangervidda mountain pass by car last week, from Western Norway towards the Eastern Norway - will soon try to make a New video) Best Greetings from Western Norway
Thanks for sharing your experience in Norway. I anxiously await your new video. It is always refreshing to see more of my ancestral homeland. Yes, it is hard to comprehend the power of glaciers. Some can be over a mile deep in places carving U shaped valleys. I guess with unlimited time a glacier can do wondrous things. It is still hard to believe the speed of glaciers and the tremendous carving they can produce. Thanks again! Dave.
Last time I was out this way I really wanted to drive the Beartooth. Unfortunately, wildfires were raging and there would be no views due to smoke. Glad you filmed it. Well done!
Thanks for viewing my video and commenting. Yes, forest fire smoke is something we deal with in the west. Some years it is worse than others. Special views exist without the smoke. We were charmed in September of that year when we went over the Beartooth Pass. Thanks again. Dave in western Montana.
We went through this road in 2014 half of the time we were asleep because we drove in thr night but when we woke up it was perfect timing we were on the top of the mountain and was able to see the nice view from the top and the zigzag road was an adventure. Would like to go back one of these coming months.
Glad you had the opportunity to see at least half of your journey during daylight hours. Roads like this one are safer (and more scenic) during the day. Make sure you check ahead to make sure that the pass is open. It has a relatively short opening due to snow and weather conditions. Thanks for viewing and sharing your experience. Dave in Montana.
Great video. I can't wait to go there. Looks like lots of aerial possibilities as well as time-lapse and night sky. Love the time-lapse of you walking the trials to the shooting site. Looks like there was a little recent snow, too.
Rich, thanks for your comment. The pass just opened the day before (it had snow and ice on the roadway) and the pass closed for winter a few days after. We caught it just right. Too bad I didn't have time for aerial on this excursion. I definitely need to budget more time! Dave.
LIZ, I know you will enjoy this road. It is quite the masterpiece. I am pleased you enjoy the music I picked. I spend a lot of time with the audio track. Safe travels! Dave.
We drove on Beartooth Hwy 3 weeks ago. We were in Yellowstone early in the morning looking at the wolves in Lamar Valley and the next destination was Deadwood SC so this was the only feasible route. I had known nothing about it before we were on it and what an absolute amazing surprise for our trip. It was the most amazing Hwy in the US that I had been on and I have been all over the country mainland. Hwy 1 in Cali is on even par to Beartooth. Videos and pictures do not come close compared to seeing it first hand. Thanks for sharing the video.
Doyle, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, pictures and video helps us remember where we have been but it is a far cry from actually experiencing areas like this in person. I am pleased you and I could experience this highway, something most people can only dream about. Thanks again for your comment and happy exploring! Dave.
OMG, Dave, ya gave me white knuckles all over again. Grin.... I traveled that fantastic road the same year. I watched carefully to see if I was in your awesome video. Only thing missing here was the smell of my hot brakes. But that's OK. Thank you. Mike
What a coincidence, being on the same road the same year. I am glad I captured this pass on video. I need to go back some year and re-film it in 4K/UHD. This is one area where the scenery (and the road) is awesome! Thanks for commenting and Happy New Year! Dave.
Thanks for the Video. I did this drive a week ago from Red Lodge to the North Entrance of Yellowstone. A video can not provide the true experience, and how scary the drive actually is. If you start in Red Lodge, once you start the switchbacks and until you reach the summit, it is white knuckle driving. I am not at all comfortable with heights, and when you are on the outside, with sheer cliffs straight down, it was unnerving. But we did it, and are sooo happy we did. It's the most beautiful scenery I have ever scene, even though it was scary.
Great comment Stephen. Yes, the road can be unnerving. I myself was taken back when I walked towards the side of the hill to capture the lakes below me. I just had a funny feeling that I was on top of the world looking down. I also am not fond of heights but knew I may never return so I had to force through the fear and walk towards the edge. It wasn’t like I was going to fall off that rounded hill or,anything, it’s just that the air was thin and I couldn’t see the ground very far in front of me. Well, we both survived and we now can talk about it! Glad you made the trip and viewed this video. We both will have happy memories for a long, long time. Happy exploring! Dave in western Montana.
@@davidegg22 Thanks Dave. I live on Long Island in NY, and it has long been a dream to drive the roads that you see from an airplane, and that you see on numerous commercials of wide open space. My sister was game, so we did it. Started in Denver, through Scotts Bluff NE, on to the Black Hills and through Billings and onward to the Beartooth and Yellowstone. It was an amazing week, and wish it could have gone on forever. I envy those that have all that open space and that can enjoy the beauty of this country on a daily basis !!
We all should enjoy the beauty that surrounds us. Sometimes we just need to travel a bit to find what we’re looking for. It’s awesome that you two could take a road trip, even if only for a week. It’s what makes those life-long memories! Yes, I am blessed by living in western Montana nestled between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone NP. Glacier is a three hour drive and the Old Faithful Lodge in YNP is a five hour drive. Unfortunately, some of these parks are being loved so much it is hard to get around by car. I am prone to take the roads less traveled. My TH-cam channel has a lot of video of ghost towns, just the opposite of the crowds of people in the national parks. Thanks for the chat and maybe another road trip is in your future. Do stay safe with the hurricane bearing down on you tonight. It looks bad while watching Lonny Quinn on CBS. Dave.
You're welcome. The winters here on the coast are pretty mild - very different than places I have lived before! But this winter saw snow on the ground for almost two months! That's a lot for here. Regardless, I'm ready for spring too. I'm welcoming the longer days and look forward to the world coming into bloom and getting out hiking! Spring has always been a favourite time of mine.
The description is accurate. We headed through here on a sunny day in late July, we experienced near blizzard conditions as we ascended, It was white knuckle steering for a while, but worth it......awesome sights.
A great way to enter Yellowstone National Park. I’ve always liked coming into the park from the the Tetons. And the entrance in the east is excellent coming in from Cody. But this entrance is not very often not taken because of its remote approach. Great views.
Being from western Montana, our direct route is through West Yellowstone. I exited the park to the east many years ago. I am in agreement with you, the east entrance is charming. Thanks for watching and commenting. Dave.
I'm always jealous of people who live Montana and nearby so they can have this kind of views every day. I wish I could leave everything behind and move to Montana. Thanks for sharing it for someone like me who isn't lucky enough to live there.
Kim, I am pleased that you liked this video enough to take the time to comment. Beauty is in every state, sometimes you need to look a little harder for it! Thanks again for viewing and commenting. Dave.
@grumpy old fart Covid has prevented a lot of recreational activities this year. We can all hope for a rebound next year. The sooner the better! One nice thing to know is that this highway will still be there whenever you can ride it! Thanks for viewing and commenting. Dave.
Almost ACCIDENTALLY went down this road in the middle of the night with my family, including my dad who’s terrified of heights... as beautiful as it is, I’ll just stick with watching a video of it
Dad wouldn't have noticed the heights and cliffs because the car headlights would have shone out into empty space! I guess it was best for you to turn around and not go over this pass at night, especially with Dad. He would have caught on in short order! Thanks for watching, and someday you will take this extremely scenic drive during the day. Thanks again for watching and commenting. Dave.
Awesome! September is the perfect month to drive this road providing it is still open. Some years it closes early due to the snow load. Thanks for viewing and commenting on my video. I appreciate it. Dave.
There is much more beauty there than you know! That is some of the oldest rock on Earth. A massive island of granite. That is just the beginning. Beautiful video but there is an error in your description. 10947 ft. Thanks!
Very interesting, a massive island of granite! Thanks for watching and reading my description. The typo has been corrected, thanks to you! It must have been one of those late night edits. It's interesting how many people do not read descriptions! You are an exception, thanks. This is an awesome road to travel. I must do it again some day. Thanks for commenting! Dave.
davidegg22 👍 I should add if you stand in the middle of the highway at the precise summit at 10947ft with a GPS receiver set to decimal degrees it will read 109.47122 degrees west. Do a google search on that number for some fun. Then look again at the highway just below the summit to the north. The highway could only follow one path, a precise land bridge carved by water. Thanks again for the stunning video!
@@77leelg AWESOME coincidence! I did a search as per your suggestion and it was WAY over my grade point! About as high as this pass! So much to see, so little time! Thanks again for your entertaining comments! I really had fun with this one! Dave.
davidegg22 simply put, that is the number on which the universe is built. Pretty cool. Author Robert Pirsig in a very famous philosophy book called Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance crossed the pass in the summer of 1968 on a Honda Motorcycle. On the way up the mountain he said “in the high country of the mind one has to become accustomed to the thinner air of uncertainty.” He didn’t know about the geometric alignment I mentioned but his words seem to fit. Be sure to have a GPS receiver with you the next time you go there. 😊
Only drove this once, would have been about June 1st 1975, it had been open from winter for a week or so, in places there were 8 foot tall vertical walls of snow at the edge of pavement where they cut through with snowblowers.
Awesome comment, thank you. I have been on this route twice, both times in the fall. I have seen pictures of what you described and it must have been an eerie feeling driving through walls of snow! Thanks again for commenting. Dave in Missoula.
One of my most favorite drives, is The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (made in 1998) before they put in the drive out area. We were able to drive up Dead Indian Hill, see that gorgeous view from 200 + feet higher. Stunning.
this was one of the most beautiful drives of my life, wife was a bit scary of the edge of the road , to be on top of a mountain was a bit windy. i am from canada.
Your country has no shortage of amazing world class scenery and the kindest people you’ll ever meet. The Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper is my all time favorite but Beartooth Highway is lookin VERY appealing 😃
David, Once again you bring the beauty of US highways to all of us. We did this road a couple of years ago and are slowing down.. I am in my eighth decade and am no longer able to keep up with the big boys. We've done a third of a million miles in our housecar(s) over most of the roads in the USA, many familiar to you. You make it possible for others to share in the splendor of what this country has to offer. I have two suggestions when you come south. Utah Highway 12 has the unique distinction of having sheer drop-offs on both sides, seemingly at the same time. US 191 from Safford AZ to Alpine AZ is probably the most crooked US highway currently in use. Additionally if you are this far south you might want to experience one of the last remaining authentic stretches of Route 66. Much of Route 66 has bee resurrected and made into tourist traps. Leaving Kingman, Arizona heading west you may still travel the original road to Needles, California through Goldfield and Oatman. This road is paved and passable but not for the faint of heart. It is hard to believe that this was once the major route of travel to the west coast. No Tourist traps on this stretch other than Oatman where the wild burros will swarm the road in search of carrots
Peter, many thanks for your wonderful comment. It sounds like you have the wild exploration DNA gene in your veins also! I will keep your travel suggestions. I have explored some of the SW over the years but not as extensively as you. Great suggestions, Peter! I must return to the SW!I have been to Kingman and Oatman a couple of times to feed the burros carrots but have not explored past the tourist stops. The best locations are those off the beaten path. Too much to see, so little time! Thanks again for watching and taking the time writing your detailed comment. I certainly appreciate it and I know others who read your post will appreciate it also. Happy trails to you! Dave in Montana.
Too funny! At least you can view this video without your seatbelt on! Then again, you may have white knuckles if you hang onto your easy chair too tight while viewing! Thanks for the laugh. Dave.
Kurt, this video starts in Montana and ends in Wyoming. Both sides of the pass have their own character and charm. The Montana side is steeper (switchbacks) and the Wyoming side is on a high plateau with rolling hills. Thanks for viewing and asking. Dave in western Montana.
Thanks for viewing and asking. This video was captured in September 2017. The road was closed a week before we arrived and had just opened. The pass was closed for the season 2 weeks after. Thanks again. Dave.
@@davidegg22 No worries. Sounds like you really lucked out. We're thinking of doing this mid June so we'll see. I love the idea of September but don't want to get obstructed hazy views from Forest fires that seem to be on the rise each year.
I am about to take a Trip to Columbia falls from Philadelphia. Then to Wyoming. I wanna take Beartooth pass highway on my way to Driggs Idaho Any suggestions. Beartooth pass is Route 212 which takes you in to Northeast entrance of the Yellowstone park I am thinking
You are correct. After Red Lodge you go up the pass to the east entrance of YNP. You go through the park exiting to the south to Jackson Hole. Up over another pass to the east to Driggs. Have fun on your adventure and thanks for watching and commenting on my video. Dave.
Hi David. I love your videos. I would love to use some of your footage in a music video for a new song of mine. It's about an epic trip of mine across the USA many years ago. I live your scenic driving videos in Montana. Have you an email address that I might be able to contact you on?
Rob, thanks for asking. I do not share my email address publicly but you are welcome to give me your address so that I could communicate with you. Dave.
This is from MDT, Montana Department of Transportation: The Beartooth Highway is currently OPEN for the season. Because of the high elevation on this mountain pass, travelers should check current weather and road conditions. Crews make every effort to keep the road plowed and open, however unpredictable weather conditions may cause temporary closures throughout the summer. Please check the road condition report for the current pass conditions.
IMHO I think the most beautiful road in America is in Montana but I don't think it is the Beartooth Highway. It is HWY 200 between Plains and Heron. The Clark Fork River, Noxon Reservoir, and the rugged cliff-like mountains are spectacular.
Eddy, I know highway 200 well, just like you. With a cabin on the Noxon reservoir at Trout Creek for the past 40 years, I am in full agreement! Thanks for watching and commenting. Dave in Missoula.

Sweet! I appreciate the comment. Dave.
I hope to take this drive in the next couple of weeks. Looking forward to it. Good primer!
Dave.
Nice video. Ill be there one day soon.
Going this summer! Love the music too, I'm a flutist and my husband is a guitarist/Clarinetist. I appreciate the instrumentation.
Dave.
Wow how beautiful
Agreed. Thanks for watching and commenting.
PS I will never post the video my sister took of me driving this highway !! :)
@@stephenwiniarski6942 It must have been ghostly, what with the white knuckles and all! Thanks for the laugh! Dave.
Dave.
Ahhh beautiful scenes!
Thanks for commenting! Have you wintered well in BC? I am truly ready for spring! Dave in Montana.
Thanks for viewing and commenting. A treasured area indeed. Dave.
@@davidegg22 thank you for posting, kind of got to re live our journey! great camera work too!
Super video 👍
Many thanks for viewing and commenting. I do appreciate the thumbs up! Dave.
@@davidegg22 You're very welcome !
Dave.
I use to live in Big Horn Basin inWyo for 17 years. in Colorado now both are unique and beautiful.
When I get older I'm going to Montana! th-cam.com/video/FOEckoDFJ9s/w-d-xo.html
grumpy old fart sadly I can't- I'm only thirteen. But someday I will!
@grumpy old fart Covid has prevented a lot of recreational activities this year. We can all hope for a rebound next year. The sooner the better! One nice thing to know is that this highway will still be there whenever you can ride it! Thanks for viewing and commenting. Dave.
I feel like this road would be super fun with a little bit of spirited driving
Nice video job
Love it up there
Beautiful
Thanks for viewing and commenting. Dave.
Love that ride!
The best!
Thank you sir.
Most welcome.
Dave.
Me too. Love the video would hate the drive. Terrifying
Nice zoom to "the Tooth"
Thank you! It was a beautiful day to go out exploring. Dave.
I was there too. 2016 September......Shall
Return soon someday .
Fabulous......Scarey

all day. But....I loved it !
Have been over this beautiful road over 100 times and counting...Also Chief Joseph at the bottom into Cody.
You are one lucky fellow! I am envious! Thanks for commenting. Dave.
One of my most favorite drives, is The Chief Joseph Scenic Byway (made in 1998) before they put in the drive out area. We were able to drive up Dead Indian Hill, see that gorgeous view from 200 + feet higher. Stunning.
Scary but beautiful
Susie, thanks for watching and commenting. This is one of the highest highway passes in the nation. Its just outstanding! Dave.
this was one of the most beautiful drives of my life, wife was a bit scary of the edge of the road , to be on top of a mountain was a bit windy. i am from canada.
Thanks for the comment. Yes, this IS quite the "HIGH" way, isn't it? Thanks for viewing! Dave.
Yeah thank you for the information never been to AZ hard for me to leave Wyoming 💖🙂
Beautiful drive from what I heard. I looked at my hat brim the whole time.
Too funny! At least you can view this video without your seatbelt on! Then again, you may have white knuckles if you hang onto your easy chair too tight while viewing! Thanks for the laugh. Dave.
Does anybody know if this starts in Montana, or Wyoming? Is it just as beautiful at each end?
Kurt, this video starts in Montana and ends in Wyoming. Both sides of the pass have their own character and charm. The Montana side is steeper (switchbacks) and the Wyoming side is on a high plateau with rolling hills. Thanks for viewing and asking. Dave in western Montana.
Awesome 👍 love the camera angles. What date was this taken? Thanks

Dave.
@@davidegg22 sure. You can email me at sayhellotorob@yahoo.com. Would be nice to hear from you. Rob
I traveled this route when it was under construction in 2009, the ride was very tiring.
Is this road open now?
This is from MDT, Montana Department of Transportation:
The Beartooth Highway is currently OPEN for the season.
Because of the high elevation on this mountain pass, travelers should check current weather and road conditions. Crews make every effort to keep the road plowed and open, however unpredictable weather conditions may cause temporary closures throughout the summer.
Please check the road condition report for the current pass conditions.
Took this path today but the fires in California made the sky really musky
Next year will be here before you know it! Maybe schedule a trip the opposite direction? Thanks for viewing. Dave.
Best time to drive this pass is early morning mid summer
Thanks for watching and commenting. Dave.
This road scares the crap out of me.
Tracy, just make sure the driver doesn't do a lot of sightseeing along the way. As an alternative, you could try this road instead: Amazing Going-to-the-Sun Road (Short Version) - Glacier National Park, Montana MT. th-cam.com/video/ZJ8_l2I3A-I/w-d-xo.html Dave.

I was driving this road the day Charles Kuralt died. Indeed beautiful.
Thanks for sharing! I have his book "AMERICA" and read it often; following somewhat in his footsteps. I also have his complete TV series on DVD. Thanks again for your comment. Dave in Montana.
Sadly, the big reveal that he had a secret family explained why he was driving that road at night. HAHA Peace
Is it really that scary as people say it is?
I didn't find that to be the case. Wide roads, slower speed limits, awesome scenery, lots of pullouts, etc. Don't just drive it but stop at each pullout and enjoy the spectacular views. Dave in western Montana.
