    I just bought this monitor and have been playing on it for a couple weeks. For console gaming on the next gen consoles 120 FPS showed 0 ghosting and great full colours. everything was brilliant and there is nothing to worry about when buying this. Design was clean and showed little bleeding. I would recommend this to anyone looking for budget monitors for next gen gaming.

    Thank you for reviewing that monitor . I hesitate between that Philips and the Iiyama G2470HSU-B1 . My actual monitor is an old Philips 248X3LFHS still going strong after a decade so Philips is a serious and reliable brand . That 242E1GAJ has a separate power supply which is interesting as it can be replaced by a generic one if it breaks . I hesitate only because you said the colors are a bit washed out . I don't need striking fast response time as I don't do gaming so I will perhaps go for it . Cheers .

    • @TotallydubbedHD

      From my understanding that's the same thing, but smearing is usually associated with VA panels. Nevertheless, you should see MORE when you go up the overdrive settings, not the opposite (no matter how good/bad the monitor is)

    Thanks for the great review. A couple questions if I may 1) Will that model be different from Philips 242E1GAEZ? 2) I am looking for an external monitor to my Lenovo P53 in USD 200 - 300 range, 24" size, half time gaming, the other half - video editing (I am a student). What I don't like about inexpensive IPS display models is the glow and bleed effects, so am tempted to try 8 bit FHD *VA (for its black and contrast). For true color accuracy, I believe, an IPS display of much higher price range is required.. So, would be grateful for any recs to fit my specs ! Merry Christmas!

      1. That model has a different stand, but is otherwise identical
      2. That's fair enough, but my experience with the one mentioned in this video (and linked in the description) is spectacularly good. Given the colour accuracy of this one isn't great, I wouldn't suggest it for video editing. You really should look into the AOC 24G2U. Altern actively, if you're fixated on VA, look into the slightly more impressive C24G2U (VA, curved).

    Do you know what monitors would have the lowest minimum brightness for using a dark room?
    I thought this would be good because of the high contrast va panel but it doesn't get blacks as dark as my ips macbook because the brightness doesn't go low enough.
    I have software that can dim the screen digitally but it can't make blacks darker.
    I thought a high contrast monitor would be good for this but actually the minimum brightness of black is more important.

    • @TotallydubbedHD
      @TotallydubbedHD  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll have to look though my reviews and check the brightness figures shared in them, can't think of one from the top of my head as most do get pretty dim (30-60 nits), for example this BenQ: th-cam.com/video/CmznD1TB_3E/w-d-xo.html
      Note, comparing your glossy IPS screen with pretty much anything that has a matte coating (ie all consumer monitors), is going to be unfair. That iMac screen is excellent to look at for many reasons. The blacks are darker than any other IPS screen due to its coating and its contrast is impressive too - competing with VAs, but rather VAs have a bit of clouding thus their contrast will be superior, but to the human eye will look washed out Vs a regular IPS, let alone an iMac display.
      Hope that explains things for you.

    • @timm3097
      @timm3097 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TotallydubbedHD So would a va never look dark enough because of the clouding you mentioned?
      And I never thought about the finish is that important to get it to look the darkest? Or could a matte still look as dark if the screen is dim enough? What about semi-gloss?
      I am used to mac screens and I never even realized there was a difference until now.
      I found an older AMVA monitor that gets very dark blacks around 0.01 cd/m2 and is glossy: (Dell S2440L).
      (or there's similar AMVA monitors that aren't glossy)
      I also could get a Eizo EV2456 on ebay which according to the Eizo website can dim the screen brightness to 1 cd/m². It's a matte IPS. I couldn't find the how dark the blacks were for it but it's the dimmest monitor I've found by far.
      So basically, I'm not sure if VA or IPS would look the darkest in a dark room (with software dimming it further) and also if the screen coating makes a big enough difference that I should choose a glossy monitor (which I do like better but they're uncommon).

    • @TotallydubbedHD
      @TotallydubbedHD  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timm3097 quite a lot of questions here:
      -Yes in opinion, an IPS will look 'darker' in some scenarios - really depends on the panel (incl VA)
      -Yes the finish is important; matte can never compete with glossy
      -A more pro-orientated monitor would be a good bet (ie Eizo) vs consumer grade

    Do you get your samples directly from manufacturers? I'm asking because I bought the AOC 24G2 and I went through 4 units, 2 from Amazon and 2 replacements from AOC directly and they all had QC issues. All 4 had different color calibration(some of them looked really bad), varying levels of uniformity(some looked pink out of the box instead of white), some had no BLB, others had massive amounts and all of them had pieces of dust stuck inside the screen.
    Needless to say, I gave it up on that monitor. I might give this one a try since I find IPS glow quite bothersome and I'm not a hardcore gamer by any means. I do more casual gaming, and movie watching so hopefully this is okay.

    I have the Philips "242E1GA" (without the J, different stand) and I just can't tolerate it. For better view I have to be more than 1 meter away. Originally when I bought it, I was on windows 10 and I build a 2 monitor setup. I feel like it has too much brightness and the colors feels like flourescents. When I synced with the 2nd monitor it felt much better, but far away from perfect. Now I'm on Windows 11 and no longer have the second monitor setup (but I still have the same two monitors) and I changed graphic card and the new one doesnt have DVI (the one my AOC IPS use) so I had to re use this monitor again.

      @@TotallydubbedHD To run 120 FPS on games like Fortnite on a PlayStation 5 you require a monitor that is compatible with HDMI 2.0, and obviously the screen has to be above 120Hz. You haven't answered my question, does the monitor have an HDMI 2.0 port?

    Thanks for the review. Will you suggest this monitor or the AOC for someone that wants to use it to play with playstation 4 and for everyday use with a mac mini?
    I currently own a BenQ IPS but I definitely can see its limits with contrast and dark scenes using it with playstation 4 or watching a movie.
    Is there a better office/gaming/ movies alternative you would suggest (for a similar budget)?
    Thanks

      I'd still suggest the AOC, but if you want a VA for that deeper contrast, I'd suggest looking at the AOC C24G2U (it's the curved VA 165hz)
