“Unboxings are boring to watch.” Thank you.
Unless you're a cat.😅
Kudos to Darkglass for being willing to put their stuff head to head like this.
Alpha Omega definitely has more clarity and midrange punch, but honestly, that can probably be pulled out of the Monomyth with the EQ with a little bit of work. They're close enough to where most people could probably get by with the Monomyth at low to medium gain and some tweaking. The cab sim feature is more advanced on the Darkglass stuff, so that might be worth it for some. Still, Joyo has a couple massive wins in my book as far as value.
Не обманывайте себя.они одинаковы.даже шумят одинаково.и схематика одинаковая
Exactly my thoughts. Just add some 1.5k-3k on the Joyo, maybe even a bit of the high shelf, and it should be fine. We would not need the bigger headroom on the Darkglass for these frequencies anyway... I am sold on the Monomyth! 🤩
They are the same circuit. Just part tolerances making the minute difference.
I’m getting a Joyo Double Thruster because that’s how much a pedal like this should cost.
@@DavidRavenMoon component drift struggles are definitely real! I’d wager the Darkglass units have a bit more consistency in their tolerances, or at least the Pre-Korg units anyways. Still, you’re mainly paying for the name and the custom-milled enclosure with that cost.
Your INTRO honesty and magic unboxing has gained you a subscriber. You crack me up dude. Thanks for making me smile.
Thank you for the amazing comparison! Really needed this!
To me, joyo wins hands down. They sound very close (and in a band setting I think the little difference they have would be even less noticeable) and they are way cheaper! Darkglass is awesome still but I can't justify their price unless you're a pro player.
You've gained a new subscriber for this no nonsense review and great approach! 🤘🏻
god i love bassists. most every guitar video is boring same old same old, but now as a bassist for a new band ive been doing my research, and every bass video has been priceless. thank you for this!
I ordered a Double thruster two weeks ago (i am still waiting for the delivery) and i am very surprised how close it sounds to the DG. I didn't expect that :) Thank you for the review!
Hey, great shootout! You make it really entertaining and fresh 👍🏻. These Joyo really come dangerously close to the original DG pedals…
I was listening to the double thruster with headphones not watching the video - genuinly I could not tell which was which

Awesome review, exactly what I was looking for and has helped me really decide which ones to get (Thruster and A/O). Only point of criticism would be that you didnt really play much in the lower register to show off how much more clankyness and clarity the A/O has which is kind of what Jon Stockman uses the pedal most for. Check out "We are" and the final minutes of "New Day" from his band Karnivool out for some examples, especiallyin new day where he just chugs on the low E string (he tunes up to F#) and the low B string. Otherwhise awesome awesome work, thanks a lot, love your channel!
Stiff Pots are Superior as they "Retain their Position" more accurately, without accidentally moving. Great comparison.
I guess stiff was the wrong word. Sticky more like? They weren’t particularly smooth at first, but you are right, stiffer knobs hold position much better.
One neat trick I learnt from Paul Gilbert, was to put rubber O-rings underneath the knobs, good for pedals that uses easy to turn potentiometers.
He showed it on the 'What's on your pedalboard' episode on Sweetwater, with Josh Scott of JHS as the host. I recommend watching that video, because it's entertaining and funny to watch.

Awesome comparison. The monomyth is on my radar, thank you for the tones!
Thanks for watching!
@@ampthebassplayer is the Joyo R_30 Tidal Wave on your dashboard?
@jmv4717 it’s literally on my shelf! Hoping to get the video filmed this weekend. I’ve been very busy over the last month with my rock opera, but we wrapped a week ago and so I finally have some free time to make more videos. Stay tuned!
@ampthebassplayer Take your time; Video quality is getting better and better. Looking forward to it!
B3K vs Z.B1Four (Dark Pre)?
Tidal Wave vs Z.B1Four (SansAmp Pre) vs Sansamp?
Damn, i mean fair play to darkglass for sending the pedals but also huge kudos to you for not being limp and just going with who sent the pedals. I get it that thw darkglass may sound 'different', yes it does a touch but, as you said, without an B2b comparison, would anybody know?, probably not. For pros with loads of spare cash, why not splash out on top brands but for amateurs, and those with less disposable cash....the difference really is acceptable:). Great vid
Ngl, nothing that couldn't be explained away by component variances. Really does get you in the ballpark.
The intro was sublime, i always imagine the behind the scenes on those situations.
that Joyo Double Thruster is really tempting tbh, I liked th Alpha Omega ultra more, but yeah they are way way closer than I thought they would be
Darkglass sounds more "metal" in all configurations. Like scooped and tight. But that means the Joyo is almost better for other rock. Like indie stuff.
Darkglass after watching this video 🤬🤬🤬
Best intro ever!
Thanks again for sending out these pedals!
We need those pedals compared in a mix. Very instructive video 👍
That’s what i wanted too, a segment with them in a mix
Or even better nulled to each other.
El video que quería ver 🤩
I love my AlphaOmega, and it is by far my favourite sounding pedal, but I hate putting it on a pedal board to gig with. Someone with a keen eye will identify it, and some things have a way of growing legs and walking away, you know what I'm saying?
Anywho, I got a Monomyth to gig with. Everyone still loved the sound, though I personally still use my AO at home as I also noticed the difference when I was at home. Live though? Sounds great, and goes well in a live mix.
Thats a great use case for the clone! Save the DG for the studio.
The Joyo pedals are so impressive. The A/B comparisons here are very eye opening. How these pedals sound will also vary depending on each players' setups. In any case, price aside, either Joyo or Darkglass would serve any player well. Brilliant
brother, doesn't the Alpha-Omega Ultra has a USB port so that you plug in the pedal to a PC so you can load in cab sims using the Darkglass suite? if so, i think that's the main edge of the Darkglass pedal vs Joyo Monomyth. Would love to see you try it out.
In my opinion the Double Thruster vs BK3 is very close. So close in fact I may even try to get my hands on a Double thruster. However, AO vs Monomyth is pretty much a no contest for me. The extra 5% - 15% improvement you get from the AO would probably save me 30 - 60min ( and less plugins) while mixing. Either way, I'm glad I took the time to watch this video cheers!
Just ordered the Joyo Monomyth as well as a Joyo Jambuddy for my guitar. All in all 910 yuan which is about $125 all together. I'm in China though where I think they're made so no idea what the prices abroad are but that's an incredible price for the improvement they bring to both bass and guitar. Can't wait to try them out.
Blindfolded? No way to tell. I think the b3k filters low end a little better? As you mentioned it is more articulat. The bottom end of the d3k just sounds more crispy to me, probably just better electronic components. And the alpha-omega feels more compressed and articulate also. And I'm probably getting the monomyth since I was interested since your last video and after this video, I'm convinced. I've always wanted an Alpha-omega but can't really justify the price.
I felt that the b3k had a nice little push in the lows, or the joyo Dt cut lows a bit
On the monomyth it's alot clearer, the DG has alot more clarity. But this could be fixed with proper use of the EQ on the monomyth
To my ears, the Joyo pedal sounds a little less rounded on the low end and maybe a little more harsh but EQ it and you're there. The Darkglass sounds a bit more full tone BUT I'd rock that Joyo pedal for sure especially for the price.
If I take the double thruster and put an EQ pedal after (or before) it, do I get the monomyth sound and tone wise?
I GO FOR THE JOYO'S nice comparison!👍
I know why you did it...because it's just fun!
I would be curious if you compared the B3K to the demonfx clone. Although I guess Darkglass might be very unhappy with that comparison since it is a copy which even copied the look.
I have both Joyo pedals, I am very impressed with the double thruster. Great pedal! The Monomyth is absolutely worth the money, super clean sounds can be created. Unfortunately, the gain cannot be shaped as nicely as with the double Thuster. The voice button delivers nice results. I can recommend both, unbeatable for the price. i love it
It almost sounds like you need to blend the joyo a lot more. At the cleaner side, the DG sounds like it's actually distorting the note, the Joyo sounds like a slight eq boost with static behind it. After you blended them more towards a dirty sound, they got a lot closer.
The DG pedals have more presence to my ears. More attack, less muddy
your bass sounds amazing on its own, are you running into any amps or sims?
The B3K has an after buzz I like.
Just bought the Monomyth and the Scylla a few weeks ago and I must say, both are amazing, especially for the price. You really can't go wrong, if that's the type of pedals you need. Particurarly for rehersals, playing at home or smaller gigs, I really don't see the need of taking a 400-500$ preamp with me, same for basses etc. Give it a try and see whether it works for you.
I would agree, keep the Darkglass for recording and home use. The Monomyth for gigging as it isn't as sexy as theft bate or hurt the pocket book if knocked off or damaged.
Maybe do a comparison of these two with the Demonfx bass pre-amps?
I’m actually not familiar with those, but I’ve gotten a few comments on them. Might have to hit them up and see if they’re keen on a shootout.
impressive ! is there a joyo clone for VMT ?
The DGs pedals are better but the value for money JOYO brings for 1/4th price works flawlessly
Is there a joyo equivalent for the vintage from darkglass? I love the tone of the vintage one but I can't afford it 😢
Not Joyo, Guma Antique - Overdrive.
But it's a pedal kit.
In my ears, I noticed a lot of difference but I loved them both
EQ can make anything sound like anything. Noise is the other thing to worry about.
well yeah, but you would need a very precise EQ, more precise than any pedal option
EQ should be our go-to tool, but EQ can't match the nonlinear characteristics of a circuit.
Is the drive section of the double thruster and the monomyth the same? Do they differ only for the eq section? I mean a part from the extra features like cab sim, XLR... I'm undecided between the two joyos but I would use the pedal like only in a pedalboard in front of the amp. For the rest I already have other pedals I like.
They are two completely different flavors of distortion. The Double Thruster is more of a lighter overdrive, and the Monomyth is heavier overdrive and fuzz.
@@ampthebassplayer Thanks! I was going for the monomyth for the eq, but I need a light overdrive so I 'll go for the DT and use a separate EQ pedal if needed. I owe you a beer 👍🏻
@riccardoprivitera4727 Cheers! 🍻
If I had to absolutely stick to a restricted budget I wouldn't hesitate to go for the Joyo pedals, but given the choice free of money constraints I would definitely choose the Darkglass pedals. The slightly more articular sound along with the build quality, in my humble opinion, is worth the premium price.
I recently bught the Monomyth and i totally recomend it, the eq is reaaly really good, so does the drive, is less ''metall'' i would say but for rock or punk it really does the job!!!
b3k and double thruster was very close, but monomyth and AO were pretty different
You are leaving the darkglass preamp on when you got to the joyo on the shootout between the alpha omega and the monomyth
Listening through headphones they are very close. The Darkglass pedals have more clarity, presence, and well defined low end. I’d get the joyo pedals for live use, but Darkglass for recording.
To me The Joy pedal dirty tone is less separate from the clean, the DG blend you can notice the separation. Just my opinion and o own a B3K
The DG is more compressed I think which is why the uncompressed clean stands out more. More volume boost to the clean when you hit the bass harder.
A bit of difference with the way those pedals sounds would not be noticeable in a live settings. I just listened to the audio without watching and.the result is almost identical.
I fully support playing the Serek because Serek. That bass is killer. I had no idea they did a 5 string. I've held off on one because so much of what I do needs the B string.
Thank you! Yeah Serek does all kinds of stuff, although I don’t think you can order them at the moment yet. They stopped all orders a few months ago to catch up on production and I’m not sure when they’ll start up again.
@@ampthebassplayer This is an outrage! lol. I guess I'll have to wait impatiently then...
Joyo kinda gets there, but doesn't have the definition or cut of the darkglass stuff. If I couldn't find the darkglass stuff used, I'd be happy with joyo I guess
I really hope someday JOYO makes a Duality clone 😹
but the first one DG made!
That bass sounds awasome!
The sounds are very close. Little differences for the price differences. I‘m thinking more about an original, that made the clone possible at all. Paying for the development is a fair move.
Well said. Especially if you can add it. The Fins did some gray work originally, although I guess they sold to Korg. So we’ll see how that goes
I thought the 'clean' sound of your bass was amazing. How did you achieve that?
Thank you! It’s a patch I built in Amplitube.
Theyre definitely different blind, and Darkglass is still king of high gain glassy tone. For less gain, I'm not likely to choose DG anyway, as EHX Hot Wax is a more versatile OD with CMOS clipping (which DG Micro Tubes was built upon, though its very different nowadays.)
I have just bought the joyo to emulate some DG tones..I also have a b7k ultra clone that sounds incredible and have just bought a used DG b7 x ... First impressions of the Joyo ..holy hell can it produce some immense low end.... I'm not sure I like the distortion circuit in it as much as the B7 stuff...but in the UK at the moment you can get the Joyo for £62 (Amazon may 2024) and the AO ultra is £399 that is 6.65 times more expensive.....sorry but if your into the AO distortion circuit you'd have to be crazy to go for the DG at that price point. My B7 X is coming tomorrow and I can't wait to see how it compares to my b7k ultra... So for live use I think I'm going to be using the Joyo purely for low end in one chain and use the 2 B7s for my dirty tones.... Oh and I love that buying cheap knock offs has led me to buy the real deal...it's a win win...
I'll spend the extra for the Darkglass every time even if they sound the same. Take some time to look into labor wages in China. Darkglass hires locally and sources his materials locally so his company can benefit the place it operates out of.
Doug sold his stake in DG to Korg last year. Their current products don't say "made in Finland" on them afaik, and only claim to be designed in Finland. I'd be interested to know where they are being sourced and assembled now.
Joyo Double Thruster is more louder and crispy than Darkglass B3k i think. But the B3k is smooth and still br00tal.
Joyo Monomyth look like more compressed and Darkglass still better.
Given the AO is actually about 5 times more expensive right now, the Monomyth is a shoe-in.
"just a little bit better," but more than just a little bit expensive. I am a fan of cheap pedals, especially when they come as close as this. I have a couple of other Joyo pedals, and they are pretty killer for their price...
I appreciate the honest comparison - I feel like the main thing you get with an extra 5-10% clarity or definition or “better” is mainly just time saved dialing in tones, especially in a studio environment. But you’re right, is it worth the extra $?
Hard question to answer for sure.
Darkglass AO more articulate... Thanx for test✌️
Its a bummer for DG.... but.... how is the build quality inside?
Joyo are awful.
I disagree with the guy^^^ above. They make pretty good quality pedals that are quite durable.
my first OD is Joyo American Tone and it's my favourite till now 4 years later . I have gigged Jammed and played a lot , ALot and still kicks ass and has always been silent and very versatile. Now all these years later I ordered this double thruster because of the blend knob , I agree with paying for development etc but I really can't and I want to sound a bit hairy and joyo is a good way to go
i feel like i prefer the double thruster more than the b3k now. especially the low gain settings. i doesn't feel as thin
b3k does sound a little more clear and crisp, although tone is very close
AO and Monomyth sounds very different
so remarkable for the price
Darkglass is still probably the better option for musicians who do it for a living. The Joyos are really close in tone. But they are way noisier and probably less durable than Darkglass. Personally I think Tech21 is better than either one
Wow, for the price difference alone im getting a joyo 😂
Public pressure ??? I got to have 5000 phantom accounts to pressure you !!! ( just kidding )
It may be "hearing with my eyes" bias, but the DG definitely sounds clearer and punchier in the mids, even after eq'ing the Joyo. If you can save up and/or snag one on sale, the DG is definitely the better pedal. But no shame in frugality, most people (besides bass tone snobs like me) wouldn't tell the difference live anyway.
Meh, my two comments, gone…
That’s awesome, I bought the joyo double thruster. Really hated the red lights and shiny knobs. Returned and just bought a Alpha Omnicron (dont need another EQ section). Keeping the vids coming!
Yeah, the lights are really tacky, im probaply just going to get a b3k used
You can turn the lights off
@@DamianPendragonand just change the knobs for a tiny sum too. Guess some people really need the designer label.
And the winner is.... JOYO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How to sound like Jaco Pastorius when????
When I have a fretless bass to put 10,000 hours of practice into lol
@@ampthebassplayer lmao I mainly said it because of the "defret" setting on the zoom but that's fair. I love your channel btw, really fun to watch and a good mix of gear "review" and tips :D
I'm just here to justify my recent order of the Double Thruster. ...and justified.
If I use it enough that it ever wears out or stops working, maybe I'll spring for the real deal. But considering I barely touch my bass, I'm sure the Joyo will be more than enough for my needs. I'm glad clones exist for those of us not who need to be a bit more thrifty.
Redundant to buy any of those if I already have a zoom B1Four? GAS is strong and I’m weak 🤣
I think the Zoom has a decent B3K in it, but the fuzzes can leave a lot be be desired. Go for the Monomyth if anything.
@@ampthebassplayerthanks, will do!
Thank God ! man finally someone sticking it to those greedy Fins ! Prices are outrageous and if you don’t think so you’re dam fool. Joyo god bless you ,you’ll be receiving my order in the next 5mins . Dark glass pssshh! Good riddance
Except, Joyo is part of Chinese communist plan to blatantly steal profits from the west using slave (and near-slave) labor.
I can’t judge, I already own at least 1 Joyo product.
Good riddance? The bass world would be much worse off without DG pushing distortion design in innovative directions. Joyo certainly isn't doing it.
You can always buy new knobs, tbh.
in live setting, the cheap one wins
They both sound good, all joyo is much cheaper
❤❤❤😂😂😂
I think b3k sounds... more mid-heavy... more nosey or smth.
I feel like there's also a morality aspect to it, Joyo is making a copy of Darkglass's best ideas and selling it for cheaper. I'd still buy the Joyo because I have very little pocket change but, if I had the means, I'd buy the Darkglass
Joyo is part of a Chinese communist plan to blatantly steal profits from the west using slave labor.
So there is a moral component here.
@@greganderson7216 The chinese ate not communist. They're more capitalist than even the USA, please learn basic politics k thanks
I don’t hear enough difference to justify spending the money
You're crazy if you tink they are close in sound! Darkglass is a way better than joyo, joyo sounds good, but no like darkglass
$200+ is a lot for any overdrive. On a stage, no one will care. If they do, it's not $140 worth. Darkglass would probably sell more pedals if they had a lower price point.
Darkglass cost as much as they do because only they sound like that. If nobody cares what you use, might as well go on stage with no bass at all
Сравнт е стоимость и заткни тесь)
The Copy wouldn´t be there without the inventor. So buy cheap shit or support the inventor. It´s a way of character imho.
"Joyo" for the Win....The "Double Thruster" has Got More Balls Period.... and is Way Cheaper....
Darkglass has note definition, and nice overtones/harmonics. Joyo good , but different. The attack is more upfront with DG. Monomyth more fizzy.
Мужик,ты кабсим к Joyo не сравнил.даркгласс опредеоенно хуже
uau...that joyo do almost the same sound.
if you in a band or recording no one hear the different.
Dark glass prices are ridiculous they should be ashamed of themselves....and im not being sarcastic,,,,completely and utterly ashamed of themselves!!
No, you get the authentic modern metal tone from the ones who invented it. It’s like buying a Minimoog vs. a Behringer. The Behringer may sound close, but you miss out on supporting the inventors of the original revolutionary sound.
Joyo are so cheaply built and break, mine combusted into ash on stage and fire evacuated the venue, all 12 of us had to stand outside in the rain.
What a lie lol. A little fuckin pedal wouldnt do that. Besides, they're so cheap you can buy another easily
having pulled apart a stack of Joyos to see how they tick, i completely disagree, they're just as well made as any other mass produced brand
@lysdexiar31 I build pedals and I've pulled Joyos apart too, they are machine soldered and the solder will pop undone with climate changes, the PCBs are thin and will crack if dropped, the switches are cheap, the wires are thin and cheap, the jacks are cheap and even the alloy the cases are made of are cheap and malleable. Joyo are cheap, poor build quality and unreliable.
@lysdexiar31 Also, the components themselves are the cheaper lower quality options.
@@ushnicyuvnikof2748 I also build pedals. I still completely disagree from my experiences.
