- The Churchill Tank Project was fortunate to be able to run the first of its restored World War 2 Churchill Tanks, a Mark IV, alongside the latest British Army tank, the Challenger 2. This represents the comparison of tanks several generations apart in armour, transmission and gun technology - a grandchild next to a grandparent in effect.

The Churchill Tank Project Aim is to bring three unique Churchill Tanks back to life, to enable them to be used in films, documentaries and advertising, as well as for corporate team visits and exhibitions. @@jackkruese4258 might be worth remembering the 3 Churchill tanks that climbed a gradient in North Africa that the Germans considered to steep for a tank to climb and proceed to reduce a column of artillery and support vehicle to burning scrap . Did l mention the one that could fire a jet of flame 120 yards ? Infantry tank that did a good job, handled by well versed crews . They were Murdered at Dieppe because they were on a suicide mission,

On a serious note, it's truly amazing the size disparity between these two tanks; if you were to see a Churchill by itself you might think it was a big tank, but then you see it next to the Challenger 2 and it looks downright tiny next to that monster.
Modern MBTs would be considered super heavy tanks by ww2 standars, only difference is now they can be fast and reliable thanks to modern engines

Challenger: No clue. Left this morning. Didn't want to see the family.
Challenger: Ok grandpa. All I've ever done is shot a few ancient Iraqi T-55s and killed a friendly Challenger and some British IFVs.
I like how the Churchill has such an effortless look to it when it moves over the terrain. I know watching Tiger 131 move is like watching something in pain as it clanks along.
The Churchill moves pretty fluidly for something of that age, and especially, size and weight. Like a Sherman.
@@REALjohnmosesbrowning the Churchill has designed from the ground up to move through the worst obstacles. It was made with the infantry-support role in mind, so it sacrificed speed for the ability to go and climb wherever the solders went. Shermans, Tigers, Panzers, T34s, etc, may have been faster, but the Churchill was far more "rugged." Its transmission was designed to to effectively balance and carry its weight with a limited amount of wear or stress. Meanwhile the other heavies were constantly on the verge of snapping their own. The churchill, like many other british tanks, had problems, but transmission and suspension wasn't one of them. Its innovative differential also meant it was one of the few tanks of the war capable of fine movement, which is one of the reasons it appears so graceful for such an old design.

Even though the churchill tank was a slow moving tank it managed to beat hill climbs very goodly

I think this in my recommended in 2020 because I watched a video of a veteran who turned 100 years old get an Honorary Colonel rank.

just some coil springs going up and down, you should see HVSS on an m4 in action.
I thought the clanking sound was much more satisfying, like the sound of something reliable and heavy.

Not at all. Seeing suspension at work is really nice. There is an ice footage around here of a Panther going at speed over bumpy terrain while remaining perfectly horizontal. Mesmerizing.
It surprises me how small the Churchill looks compared to the Challenger 2, I never realized until now just how huge the Challenger 2 is in basically every aspect(height, width, and length)

well, at least one German woman didn't when one ran over her car when she pulled out infront of it...she was lucky and wasnt hurt badly. The car was less fortunate, that got a flat that a spare tyre couldn't fix.

@@bulbusaruesOnly in elevation. It was an early piece of technology , rarely used in the field. I mean , kudos to the Americans for outfitting their tanks with such a cutting edge , experimental even , piece of tech, but it proved to be somewhat unpractical . It took a long time to warm up from a cold start , it could only handle relatively slow speeds , and ,without stabilization in the lateral plane ,it failed to confer any significant combat advantage.
In any case, few of the troops were trained in its use.
The first really effective use of giro stabilization on a gun tank was the British Centurion Mk 3. With Stabilization in both planes and linked to an analogue computer, the 84mm 20 pounder gun could be laid accurately at speeds of up to 15 MPH. This doesn't seem much today , but 15 MPH was the top speed of that Churchill !
@@gavinlee9781 you’re technically correct, but the Sherman stabilizer was a very simple vertical axis stabilizer. It basically allowed the gun to remain more or less on target after stopping. The modern 2 axis stabilizers allow accurate fire on the move

Technically it’d be the Centurion as its Great Grandad, it was a separate split from the cruiser line which ended at Comet and I-tanks ending at Black Prince.
I love the challenger. Even with all that extra armour she can still shift! What a beast

One was deployed to Europe and called Crocodile as well and the other was the Zippo deployed by the USMC in the Pacific.
Wow, I never realized the Churchill was so small. So many times in different media like cartoons and video games, they make the Churchill look so much bigger. Still, my favorite British Tank (Second only to the Mark IV Male, because come on, gotta respect the classics man).
To be fair; Tanks in general were smaller & lighter then 😂
The Churchill though ended up with thicker frontal armour than the Tiger I, and could turn a lot quicker than it too 😉 .
(though *using* the Nuetral Steer capability was discouraged by the brass, due to the extra training being deemed too time consuming 🤦♂️)

Challenger: I'm one of the most advanced pieces of hardware on the battlefield, and I'm packed with millions of dollars worth of highly sophisticated software!
Churchill: Back in my day, men with strong muscles, nerves of steel, and cast iron guts drove me right into battle! Straight down the enemy's throat! And the most sophisticated thing they had was a radio the size of a shoe box. Keep bragging junior, a little static electric could knock you right outta the game, but a little grease and oil and I'm still as good as ever!
Challenger 2 can be aimed manually just like the Churchill if fire control systems are lost.

I vaguely recall that the originals performed poorly and were soon upgraded... hence the better performance.

I wouldnt want to be in that drivers compartment, when a lucky SABOT round just happens to penetrate that armor... Yes, I know... It's highly unlikely, but still...

Amazing to think that an army of Churchills, which could survive head on with a Tiger at long range, wouldn't stand a chance against 1 modern tank at any range. Technology has come on so much.
Yeah in history, it sayed that one churchill's armour is stronger than the Tiger tank.
Still amazing to see now but comparing it with the challenger... Wow the size and speed difference.:P Still very good Historic british engineering right there.
@@UneducatedCraftProEdition believe you mean the Mark 7, 152mm at the front including the front of the turret. I myself don't know if a Mark 7 ever saw a Tiger in combat, but if it did I'd definitely say it had a more than decent chance of taking the big cat out, though that's just me speculating.
@@sergeantkazotsky5616 Head-on at long distance it would be more or less a stalemate, the Churchill Mk VII had the same 75mm cannon as the standard Sherman which couldn't penetrate the Tiger I's front armour, while at longer distances (more than 500m) the Tiger's 88mm cannon couldn't defeat the Churchill's front plate without super rare APCR rounds. The Churchill is vulnerable within 500m however, while the Tiger is immune to the Churchill's gun unless attacked from the side or rear.
Of course as an infantry support tank the Churchill was unlikely to meet the Tiger, and if it did then towed antitank guns would likely be close at hand. So the Churchill's best bet would be to retreat and let them deal with the problem.

@@nickellison2785 I don't think the Black Prince was unreliable after all it was basically a modified Churchill with the same engine, transmission and suspension. It was just that it could barely move under its own power. If the BP had a Meteor engine and had arrived on the battlefield in 1943 it might have been a useful heavy.
@@stuartburton1167 If something can barely move under its own power then I would say that’s unreliable, it’ll put loads of strain on the transmission and driveshaft to get it moving at a decent speed. Take the Ferdinand for example, or even the Maus

i took a bunch of rounds from a sluggfest with 3 panzers and knocked them out then i got taken out by a 4th on darkest hour. 10 minute battle and was so much fun
Would love to no if this was filmed in Bordon/whitehill in hampshire, the old REME training ground, I used to watch the tanks as a kid , in the 80/90s. Brought back fond memories still love tanks to this day❤😊
its amazing to think that absolutely no tank and anti tank vehicle of ww2 could even dent todays mbts with any kind of ordinance, and that a single abrams, challenger, leopard or t80, could wreck havoc on an entire batallion of those tanks by themselves absurdly quickly and out of efective retaliation range
I'm pretty sure the Challenger can't follow the Churchill on extreme cross country slopes. Those tracks can make it climb mountains !

The first thing I notice is how much louder the Challenger's engine is.
Churchill had a naturally aspirated 350hp Bedford engine. C2 has a twin turbo,12 cylinder 1,200hp unit.
Modern tanks: smooth armour and sharp edges

I don't know why, but I prefer the nice "Hum" of the Churchill's engine against the Challenger's engine sound.

Took us to invent the tank to deal with the carnage that was The Somme and the Germans to actually "get it" in WW2 and for Britain to play catch up for a long time afterwards. The video succinctly proves the point.
+Mark Balcombe thats probably not fair. The Conqueror more than held its own compared to Soviet counterparts. the Chieftain was a marvellous tank and many of its innovations live on in Tanks in current NATO arsenal.

+Abaddon Interitus because it's the most optimised design, tank designers back then designers were experimenting with all sorts of ideas and roles for the tank.
Not that experimenting has stopped but mostly it's now increasing the survivability of a tank.
Unless something comes along that questions that optimised design or pushes it out of it's role the overall shape of the tank will remain the same.
The BMPT is an interesting offshoot of today tanks with an emphasis on a direct infantry support role with more fire-power than current armoured infantry carriers.

the Churchill isn't really a grandparent of the Challenger 2, The modern tanks are decedents of cruiser tanks like the Crusader and the Cromwell, where the Churchill is an infantry tank.
Yes but they both share the same super heavy armour, the churchill was the most armoured allied tank at the time, same with the challenger.

@@crawler6019 That's because Chobham type armour can't be moulded or bent. it is applied in blocks to the fabricated inner shell. The outside armour is just a covering to stop the layout of the laminate armour being visible.
tbf alot of that stuff is protective equipment, reactive armour panels and like trophy systems and radars an whatnot, personally i kinda like that it looks like its carrying an entire arsenal with it lol
