Been here in NYC my whole life. Aside from people having bad days, the occasional unfortunate homeless person which makes the train car smell or someone on drugs, I've never had a bad experience or something that made me feel unsafe. You really just chock it up to being whatever and mind your business. Having headphones and music helps and you can get wifi/mobile service at stops. Due to all the jobs I've had I've easily taken the train past 10p at latest 3am. Just treat it like you would walking outside when its late, stay aware of your surroundings. More than anything, I'm more annoyed when the train car has no a/c over who I'm riding the car with and some people just have bad b/o, in a city with so many people it happens. Not often but its there, lately I've been running into that just transitioning between different train lines. For anyone still not convinced, they're cracking down on turn style hoppers (people who don't pay to use the subway) so lot of the stations with that activity, or popular stations due to location will have police on site~ You'll see them right as you're passing to get to train access~ In NYC everyone has a destination and a place they're going to, so as long as you keep it moving you'll be just fine. No one comes to sight see and linger in the subway anyways. If you do however there are great places. I'd recommend visiting the Underground market as well as Oculus~
lowered expectations. the subway always smells like piss at best, or like a homeless person shat himself at worst. 95% of the stations look decrepit and neglected. in the summer, the stations are a furnace and there is ZERO ventilation, making the piss smell even more pungent. several people get pushed to death on the tracks every year because the MTA and city are too cheap to install barriers. instead, they half assed some dinky fences and called it a day. you should try getting out the country more. the subway in tokyo is immaculate in comparison. in HK all of the stations are air conditioned. in china, EVERY platform has barriers. none of the aforementioned cities' metros smell like piss or ass, and none of them are remotely close to being dangerous.

That sandwich looked amazing. When you were talking about looking up how to order and them being grumpy. It reminded me of the episode of Seinfeld when they would order this soup, and if you ordered wrong he would say "no soup for you, for one year". After Elaine took too long to order and she didn't get the soup she found the recipes for his soup in a dresser she bought. She went back, rest is history 😁😁
Which NY directions app did you use? I had a hard time with the directions since they say " go to the SW corner" but I could not tell which way was SW once I got to street level. Thanks.
The easiest way to find your bearings in Manhattan are that the street numbers increase as you go north, and the avenue numbers increase as you go west. For example 23rd street is further south than 42nd street, and 5th Ave. is further east than 10th Ave. it takes a bit of practice, but once you get that down, you can navigate almost the entirety of Manhattan. It does get tricky in lower manhattan though because the grid breaks down below 1st Ave and in the Village, but everywhere else is pretty easy.

52 yr old native NYer. From Queens. The 70s thru early 90s were fairly dangerous but usually contained to certain neighborhoods trains would run thru. During most of the 2000s up until about 10 years ago, subway crime was very little and not much of a concern to NYers. But over the last few years as the defund the police movement came about, the riots of 2020 with BLM and the release of criminals who can't make bail...it's really taken a turn for the worse. The problem now is that it's just so random. Even the "safest" trains are now subject to criminal activity at any hour of the day. But yes, any train after 10p should be avoided if possible.
