There’s no way this is possible. I already bought all of the low priced reserved list cards. All of them.
Me too lol
I did
I'll buy them from you
awright! how much for the cards? all of them ( o.o)
i just bought them all after they restockd
Thanks for being my risk management department Rudy
Totally agree with section 15:00. Germany also does not teach any financial/risk management in Highschool. Result: the average person does not think about medium or long-term investments.
YES!!! Loved the depeche mode reference!!! Happy holidays Rudy! Will be submitting my x-mas present to myself soon via patreon.
Totally agree. I spent some time buying up a non rl card Apetto Runecaster. My cost was about $300 for around 1200 copies. That included my time and shipping on larger lots. I sold them during commander 2019. TCGplayer was $5-7, eBay I sold sets for $18, and I buylisted as many as I could for around $3 on average. In 2 weeks I only sold HALF. My profit was around $1500, which was great but it made me realize how lucky I was for the price to increase that much. Initially I was hoping it would quadruple in price someday. No way in hell I will spec on low value cards again. I would on average make more money working overtime at my real job.
Well.. using that logic about "forgotten reserve list cards" Wheel of Fortune and Lake of the dead come to mind. 6 years ago.. hell probably 2-3 years ago for lake, They were basically dirt cheap compared to today. I think there definitely still are hidden gems in the reserve list. But great video as always.
Thank you for explaining risk, percentages....how money works. These are the best videos. I love these discussions around the fundamentals.
Thanks Rudy. This is a great video. You can apply these ideas across almost all collectibles. I’m going to have to deal with unloading my parents collections when they no longer can deal with it.
Great message Rudy. Thanks again for keeping us on an even keel.
@Rudy - you should teach a Master Class on the world of investing in paper Magic.
Rudy, I wholeheartedly agree. I have always traded up in magic. I would trade 280 dollars in mostly bulk rares for a single card worth 270 dollars. Usually trading towards a reserve list card. Recently this is declined due to COVID. But overall, I have had decent success, for instance, traded things like urza, rise of the dark realms, phyrexian obliterator, and bulk rares for a Serra sanctum. When it was 115. This turned out very lucrative for me. As sanctum has sky rocketed.
Going through a similar situation. However I’m buying cards a lot cheaper than the market price is. I buy from a comic shop predominantly. They sell magic cards but it isn’t their big money maker. I have been buying cards casually that haven’t been price checked in binders no one goes through since 2018. For reference I bought a Phyrexian Negator for $1. Masticore for $2.50. So in my mind I have already made double my money trading them in. So I continue. Even if they regress they won’t be nearly that cheap anymore.
Dear Rudy, Indiana Jones chose the chalice in The Last Crusade, not Temple of Doom. Yours, Timmy
He chose...poorly.
I knew I wasn't gonna be the only one to pick up on that. JUNIOR!!
Jones: "This belongs in a museum!"
Rudy: " Tacos belong in Taco Bell!"
Love these kind of talks, please educate us more dear papa Rudy
At one point before the 2018 crash, Card Kingdom was buying ANY cars on the Reserve List at $1.00.
i feel like no matter how many rudy alpha investment smart videos i watch, I'm still NEET and broke.
This is why I don't price speculate for reselling. I only price speculate if a card that I want to buy and use in the future might reach a significantly higher price in the future. For instance, right now, the card Into the North is extremely cheap, but if there are some awesome snow cards in Kaldheim that I want to play with in EDH or Legacy, I don't want to have to buy Into the North at $2 a card later on, so I bought some now while they are cheap so that I can lock in the option to play the card.
7:00 Such a wise piece of advice that a lot of people need to hear
Merry Christmas everyone!

Beckett graded my gordita crunch wrap supreme a 69.4
people are afraid to buy expensive stuff, 9/10 times, people will choose the RL fallen empire card over a urza time spiral.....
I bought a few cheap RL cards in bulk. I like the cards though. Having 50 copies of Pillar Tombs of Aku sitting around doesn't bother me because I think it's neat and I loved the card back in high school.
It's supply versus use in a lot of cases. Reserved list rare's that see lot of play equals value. Predicting if a rare becomes valuable largely depends on unique ruling on the cards and reading thee-leaves trying to predict future developments. Nostalgia might pay of in the reserve list but those cards will never become massive hitters unless they also see play a lot and are not present in large quantities. There are plenty of rare reserve list cards that are under ten bucks...and reading the rules explains why. They might rise in value eventually but not much because they see no real use so there is no big buyers market.
Hard to figure out which card will show up in a sideboard in one legacy tournament and then spike like Drop of Honey. It may be easier to go for cards that have potential to be used in a combo deck.
I'd argue it's not that the markets forgotten, but rather there aren't enough investors yet in themarket to boost the lower priced, less flashy cards vis a vis the supply. As more money flows into the collectibles market it will float the prices at some point. It may take a while, true. But it isn't ENTIRELY idiotic.
The lower cost reserve list cards are a much longer hold... but they will still go up
they will most likely go up slower than the price of the dollar though
@@ctg4818 Depends on the card and its useage. Vanilla creatures and cards that don't do much will go up slowly, but cards with unique effects might end up being combo pieces as more sets come out.
@@ctg4818 not to mention selling cards at full price is virtually impossible.
But Rudy, Taco Bell’s Doritos tacos are only $2. Think of the endless amount of money if I wait 30 years
at one point I wanted 1000 volrath's shapeshifters. Now I don't

Sometimes it works out. I did pretty well with Radiant Archangel, but still..not like I was buying hundreds of them for a real investment or anything. Just having fun speculating on a few cards.

I bought a fnm promo elves of deep shadow for my cube ages ago. I wish I could have seen into the future and bought every copy available....
I just wanted to comment that my high school taught basic finance. We went over stocks and bonds and we were taught how to balance a checkbook.

Based Rudy, Shards of Alara is indeed close to the end of MtG gold era and undeterred imo. Four years after Shards is the beginning of the of the end for MtG.
Rudy's priced me out of the market. I'm only good for $2 now :( Merry Christmas Rudy.
Rudy! That's exactly my plan! Identify $2 Reserved List cards, load up on high-interest credit card debt, and go to town buy-out'ing them to oblivion! 📈
I dont want to admit this and I wish it wasnt true but: Rudys rants comfort me.
He's one of the few people who know what they're talking about
"If you chop off my finger, little tacos come out" Rudy almost broke character and laughed at that.
I'll never be rich. But with Rudy's insights I'll never be poor.
Well there goes speccing on Grandmother Sengir
got played on gameknights, spike incoming!

Unglued basic lands are 5-10 bucks. It's insane
Rudy must've moved the elevator finally. Glad he didn't get hurt.
To be honest, I remember when Radiant, Archangel was listed under $2 in NM condition and I bought her at that price in 2019 because I wanted her in my collection. I was surprised that she was that cheap considering that she's Reserved List. I thought to myself "yeah, I guess it's because she's not sought after". Now she's worth what, $40 for NM? The price has gone up 20x in a year for that specific card, for no apparent reason since it's not really that powerful.
I remember buying a LP radiant for $1.28 for my commander deck earlier this year. From what I remember, the massive spikes the card have had this year are from somebody doing buyouts on the card
@@jordancourtney9142 Technically, if you don't invest in say a 1000 pieces of a card but you do buy a Reserved List for the low whenever there's a chance and you have, for example, 50 cards that used to be $2 but for some reason they spiked to $40 you'll still be able to easily exchange them for a $35 worth of staples and standard easy sellers and sell those. I guess it depends heavily on whether you're investing in huge amounts or pretty much going for inexpensive Reserved List cards in a casual manner.
Picked up a NM foil Radiant for $45 around March for my Urza's Legacy set. Glad I did!
I get it. At that time Magic was sucking when Urza's Saga was coming out. Even though the set was great the standard format was broken, leading to low quality gameplay at tournaments. Ice age was riding off the wave of the OG sets so they had a reason to overprint.(Fallen Empires era) Adkinson admitted that the game sucked hard when Pokemon came out and they weren't doing good in numbers. So when that Worldwake Zendikar era dropped they had no clue that it would blow up and make people excited again. Therefore, the print runs were smaller cause they were still testing the waters and didnt want to overprint. I think the Innistrad Avacyn block maybe be the last era were the print runs were genuinely low and could bare a great fortune.
Great lesson
It happens sometimes, Rudy. Sometimes the market changes. It’s not always a case of a card being long forgotten, perhaps it just sucked so it was cheap. Then things change and it no longer sucks. See: Didgeridoo. 600% price increase in the past year
wish I could find someone doing stock/401k videos as well as you do magic videos Rudy
Seriously he should also do financial videos. I'd pay
He does do finance videos. Have you watched the channel?

About a year and a half ago I came into some money and I thought it would be funny to buyout some low-end, but low print run reserve list card. I chose Diamond Kaleidoscope. I bought 500 and paid around $0.50 each, all in. Funny thing is the card spiked recently and market value is around $5.00. I doubt it's going to stay this high but it was fun to do anyhow. Maybe someday I can make some money with them but yeah, probably not.

I Just sold my 1st yolo ($2500), made 117%, AAPL 125c 2/19. I got lucky, but I was patient.
Question: I’ve been watching the TCG market price on some of my older cards for a while. About a year ago Revised Wheel of Fortune was around $50. Now it is closer to $250. Other Revised went up too, but things like duals went from $300 to $450, not a 500% jump. What happened to cause Wheel to spike?
commander
Yeah if you pay attention to the actual game, then you'd know.
Come on, Rudy. You're definitely not a lizard made of tacos. You're clearly a taco made of a 1000 tiny lizards.
Hey Rudy, legit question: Which lvl CFA did you reach (on the occasion you took it) ?
It's like saying that you're buying out all the penny stocks on Wall Street. Yeah, maybe someday you turn a profit, but it's just as unlikely that you never recoup.
I'm relatively young and I made a decent amount from funds this year, I don't really touch options and stuff atm once I have some have fun money I might though. I currently do some more high risk funds and once I'm done with studies and job I might start putting more in lower risks but as long as I'm young I feel higher risk ones are fine and mine have done above average so I have gotten a bit lucky over the last 5years or so.
Theres a reason why a card is $3, usually has to tie into supply/demand. Alot of people dont understand COGS when doing their "hobby" business.
Rudy what do you think about buying out Dwarven Pony from Homelands? It's on the reserved list but it's less than a dollar!!
So what would you do if you only had $100 to park a month? Save it to buy a more expensive card at the end of the year which would of increased to out of reach territory due to the percentage gained very the savings interest rate? Versus buying 50 $2 reserve list with potential bump to turn your $100 to $150? Granted whose gonna pay for 50 $2 cards for $3, and that is where you’d have to be a daily active trader of the card to move it. I’ve move bulk uncommon that were .06 per card for $1.95 for a playset and that was a 161% ROI after fees and shipping. Like its a hustle but it can be done its just time consuming at first. Now it takes 15-20 mins to load out about 11+ orders, thats about $20/hr for a side hustle.
I just like opening packs, this market stuff is above my pay grade
Rudy is there any difference between a $1, $5, $20, and $40 reserved list card in terms of long term growth?
Good stuff, economics 101.
Awesome a White Board Lecture without the board or silly visor.
Thanks Taco Man...
There’s one card I buy every time 10 are on the market . See what it looks like in 20 years
I only sell one or two playsets of cards at a time. I never post my entire stock on Ebay.
As this generation ages, there is no doubt collectibles will become more mainstream.
Collectibles have always been a thing, like art and whatnot but these newer generations like their collectibles to associate with their own nostalgia.
See, what Rudy is saying here is stay away from cheap single cards as investment vehicles. You want to stick with tried-and-true sealed product where growth is always guaranteed. Get yourself a substantial position in Dragon's Maze booster boxes, and you'll be riding that gravy train in no time!😜
Edit: long time.
@@brokengames9020 yikes. I don't think you're looking at the same MTG as the rest of us. If the entire secondary market was inflated artificially then it wouldn't still be prominent as a collectible 27 years later.
It sounds more like you're upset maybe you missed the boat on RL cards. Salty??
Good plan
Well, it's not that bad of an idea if you're buying cards that could be playable if the right card is printed. I was doing this for the past three years and made a killing on Didgeridoo, Paradigm Shift and Psychic Vortex. Couple of others are still sizzling, like Thought Lash and Tombstone Stairwell. However my requirement was $5 and below, and they had to have a unique effect.
Only Psychic Vortex was a strong position (over a 100), the rest was 20-40 cards. Still have a few strong positions, very optimistic with all the new commanders WotC is printing.
So, If I have 8 widgets and am selling them for $40 each, it's better if I sell them individually for 40? (Ebay)
My Mtg investment strategy.. buy cards, sir on them for a few years, then sell. I can afford that it isn’t my main focus and I could give two flips about buyouts.
Currently I’m hoarding jeweled lotus draft pack version. 😈
