Such a classic! Payne was an underrated drummer. He had that swing feel plus he could drive Basie's band with power. He would even come off of his chair from time to time when he played the bass drum. A real showman with technique to spare. Basie himself had been a drummer in his early years so he appreciated what Sonny was doing. Nice post here.

      Never underrated.

@@rudolphguarnacci197 That's true in a sense; I just feel like he didn't get the notoriety other big name drummers got from his era.

Well, i can tell you from first hand experience he was extremely well-respected by other drummers. In fact, i recently looked at his wiki profile. It said he was Sinatra's drummer and that Frank paid his hospital bills and for his funeral.

@@rudolphguarnacci197 Glad to hear it. I know he was well-respected by other drummers, I'm one of them! My point was about notoriety in the public eye. Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich, Art Blakey, Shelly Manne, Louie Bellson, Elvin Jones, Max Roach etc. Those drummers all had their own bands and therefore tended to be out front more than Sonny did. That's all.

My dad was a drummer from that era. He always spoke highly of Sonny Payne. We would discuss the differences between Sonny and Count's drummer before Sonny, Gus Johnson.

I was a drummer in a jazz combo at age 17 with my father(he played keyboards)(early 70's) and this was one of my favorite tunes to play.

That wonderful, muscular, powerful Basie sound, even in the delicate, quiet parts. No one even came close to matching it in my opinion.
