Thank you for the insane amount of testing on show here, and for breaking it into chapters so I could skip around and watch just the games I'm interested in.
Btw - my preferred way to play DESORDRE in 1440p on my 3060ti is with Path Tracing low and DLSS=Performance with the FSR3 mod enabled, which works flawlessly in the game with Path Tracing enabled, but is glitchly in Lumen, for some reason.

Is 8GB VRAM enough in 2024?, easy answer is Yes. I know that cause I actually have one to play all my PC games, and now with the Frame Generation mod I can even play Starfield at the highest settings at 1440p at 90ish FPS with my 3070, another game 1440p, high settings and high FPS is Avatar, the issue in todays new games is not about you need more VRAM the problem is within the game putrid mess of optimization, and developers are just relying in DLSS or FSR scaling methods to fix their putrid mess of developed new games.

Thanks for the effort on doing a bunch of these tests. I was actually planning to upgrade my RTX 3070 to 4070 ti super but decided to just wait for RTX 5000. This video really helps my decision.
8GB VRAM wouldn't be enough on some AAA games with max settings/texture but DLSS tech really helps to lower it down and make it playable.

The VRAM is the main reason I went with 6700xt as my upgrade from the gtx 1070 instead of a 3060ti or 3070. Seemed silly to buy a card twice as powerful but still the same VRAM. And im happy with my choice because i got a new 4k TV and playing games in 1440p/4k regularly use 8-12 gb of vram

It seems to work well in most games, which is great. I have a 3060Ti and haven't noticed any issues so far, but I play at 1080p and mostly on high or optimized settings. By the way, if anyone has a problem with VRAM in RE4R, I recommend turning off RT (it's very subtle and I don't like how shiny Salazar's castle is with it), set shadows to high (looks the same as max, but eats 2 GB less ) and use high (2GB) or high (3GB) textures because at lower settings they sometimes pop in and out while 2GB and 3GB don't.

Thank you! So bandwidth and VRAM are both important, and if a game manages to exhaust both at the same time, that's when you have a problem. So for example, 6700 XT may be low at bandwidth, but its generous VRAM size makes up for a lot of those of the more demanding games. That was interesting to learn. If I said things right, of course.

    • @AncientGameplays

I also ended up picking up a 6700xt over a 3060ti as my previous GTX 670 4GB lasted me waaaaay longer than it should have with it's extra 2GB of VRAM. It was also like $60 cheaper at the time. I have loved it for the most part.
I wonder if Ancient Gameplays would make a quick video troubleshooting bandwidth limited scenarios vs VRAM. I know you can usually see VRAM spilling over into RAM and getting frametime spikes, but I suspect I may be pushing my 6700xt a little too hard in games like Alan Wake 2 and Avatar. Or it could be my SSD in Alan Wake 2. Or it could be some weird other setting in Avatar (especially with framegen on in Avatar). Just weird I get stutters in those games when moving the camera from time to time even though I have a 7800x3D now with it.

The thing with vram spill over is, on some games it won't show any performance hit like fps drop or stuttering, instead game engine will try to lower textures resolution, most people won't even realized this happen if it's not rendering too low to ps2 like textures, and without side by side comparison, the other thing to watch out is frametime pacing, when you max out vram usage it usually become erratic and microstuttering start to occur despite the game still producing enough fps.

    • @AncientGameplays

One of my favorite past times is designing/creating a vehicle in Automation: The Car Company Tycoon Game and exporting and testing/racing the cars in BeamNG. With my prior 5700 XT, the 8GB framebuffer meant I had a slideshow in both games if I kept Automation open in the background when I loaded up BeamNG, so I needed to close Automation after exporting and then open up BeamNG. With my 6800 XT, I can run both games simultaneously and I can just alt+tab between them when I'm testing my builds. 16GB may not be totally necessary, but damn, it sure is nice to have for my use case.

The 3070 was a decent card that should of had 12GB instead of 8GB. Just like the 4070 now. I'm curious how accurate the in-game VRAM usage info is. For example would a game really be using 6 or 7GB out of it's 8GB graphics card? I just keep getting flashbacks from when I played The Last of US part 1 on pc. Im sure there is some sort of memory spill. Im sure 8GB cards are fine for most of the 1080p cards, but if I was building a new pc in 2024, regardless of the resolution I would definitely want a minimum of 12GB VRAM. Just like you would want to have 32GB instead of 16... an SSD instead of a HDD... etc etc..

1:10:18 I think that 10GB of VRAM should be sufficient for 1080p gaming (if you don’t max out the ray tracing settings). However, for current-gen games with 1440p and ray tracing, the picture looks different. In this case, cards with 12GB of VRAM should be the minimum.
I understand that ray tracing can look cool in some games, but for the time being, I am absolutely fine playing the games without ray tracing. Not everyone is a hardcore enthusiast/elitist; there are also people/gamers like me who are happy with less.
Sooner or later, I will also upgrade to a card with more VRAM, but for the moment, I should be okay with my RX 6700.
By the way, you could also do a test with cards like the 3080 10GB, RX 6700 10GB, RX 7600 8GB, and RTX 4060 8GB. However, only focus on the raster-performance at 1080p (high - ultra) and 1440p (medium to high with FSR/DLSS).

Using DLSS Quality or even Balanced, along with lowering texture quality settings are the most useful settings to tweak.
You can still squeak by with 8gb for 1440p gaming in new titles, but nobody but should be buying an 8gb card for such a purpose anymore. I'm holding onto my 3060ti for 2024, but I will be upgrading in 2025 when the next generation of cards drop.

True answer is: that depends. Do you care about ray tracing and ultra textures at higher resolution than 1080p? Then NO! absolutely not, dont even think about 8gb cards. But if you want tu turn you settings down to high and sometimes medium and dont care about rt at all , specially in the near future, then just go for it. i would absolutely not buy a 8gb gpu for 1440p monitors, i have a 3080 10gb and i dont even use higher settings and still have problems here and there due to vram... video is kinda biased in that regard, sorry.

So no, if you already have a 8GB GPU, you're fine for now. If you're planning on buying a new one though, I'd suggest going with 10 / 12GB cards. If your budget can allow that.

    Hello Fabio.
One of the few who can properly overclock the GPU. And as reality shows, the video memory has really run out. Oh Mr. Huang, the memory chips were $2 more expensive, but wait! This is blocked at the driver level! Yes, you can solder 2 gigabyte memory chips and set the logic correctly. But at the driver level you will get a lock. And the GA 104 chip is so powerful that it just rests all the time. Amazing Fabio. But Nvidia will never hand over the driver refinement to the side. The 4000 series of video cards can suffer terribly, especially when people solder 2 gigabyte chips and use the chip completely. Fabio, did you notice by the electricity consumption whether the card was fully working or not? I now have a 3060 ti with gddr6x, if your memory was 16 GHz, then I have 21 GHz and in FHD in cyberpunk, despite the maximum consumption of 265 W, the card consumes only 180-200 W.

Put more racing games on the benchmark, but real racing games, like F1 games, ACC games, etc. I am currently thinking of upgrading to 1440p, mainly cause of Formula one games, or racing games in general. The issue, we racing gamers (competitive) is the imersion needs bigger monitors, and if the resolution is "low" like my atcual 1080p, it sucks lol. Currently i am thinking about update to the rysen 7 7800x3d and a 4070 Ti Super for playing, and cause i need to buy a new motherboard to go from the i7 10th gen (the one without the K), i going to buy a MB dual slot to pair with my current 3070 and use for the extra 2 monitors on 1080p and obs. I'm going to try so maintain my AZZA 360 blizzard and 850W psu. What do you think? But for now, Is my current 3070 pair with i7 10700 able to run F1 23 on 1440p at 150fps at least? 12gb of vram is more than sufficient for any current-gen game at 1440p(high-ultra settings and dlss in very demanding games)
sure, it can occasionally cause some performance issues in some unoptimized/vram sensitive games. but other than that 12GB VRAM should be fine for most games, especially if we are only talking about the raster-performance. a good chunk of players(except hardcore enthusiasts) don't even play with maxed out ray tracing settings, or they don't even bother at all with ray tracing.
