    The two most important things to be a good BIM Manager: time and experience.
    Never rush into becoming one - it is so much more than a software based role. I believe that BIM Managers should have general mastery on software their company works in, however they also need to be experts in complex workflows and coordination methods, as well as software/hardware selection.

    • @milalia5606
      @milalia5606 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nice explanation c: , please, I would like to know then if it would be correct to say that a Bim Manager, no longer performs the work of an architect, is not so much involved in the process of designing the project, but, is more involved in making the workflow work, would be something like that?

    • @AussieBIMGuru
      @AussieBIMGuru 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@milalia5606 yes designing and administering workflows, but not typically doing them hands on. I believe a good BIM manager needs the ability to get hands on if necessary, but otherwise should be a leader vs a follower.

      2. Saving up money for your yearly or bi-yearly layoff.
      Haha. A good BIM manager has knowledge of the entire workflow. They have a wide range of skills relating to BIM. They are zen masters of patience. They must be 3 steps ahead of their users. The best BIM managers are also professional designers.

    Hi Balkan,
    I believe as my position is what you are talking about, it's much more than what you described. It's definitely not all about Revit, the second important software is Navisworks, and many other come along such as synchro.
    And also as Arkan said one should understand the whole construction process as he will be managing the construction of the project through BIM, and he will manage the BIM coordination team as well with all engineering departments. Also there are BIM standards that one should learn depending on location to be able to provide the BEP (Bim Execution Plan). There is a lot to learn about it, it's like a new major by itself

    • @deathblade909
      @deathblade909 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup, I think THE BEP is probably the most important, and essential role of BIM manager. We often have to enforce standards in whatever environment we are in.

    • @MahmoudCharif-MaxArchitecture
      @MahmoudCharif-MaxArchitecture 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@keacadd-dz4037 this depends, spme companies want an mep bim manager, some want architecture, some want structural. But in most cases, a BIM manager should have a good knowledge of all especially MEP because most objects that get maintained and recorded in COBie are MEP equipment, devices, fixtures, etc.
      It all depends on the nature of the company (contractor, designer, consultant) and the discipline that they use.
      I hope this helps.

    In my mind it's a project manager with BIM knowledge, maybe an extra PM responsibility a CAD technician has.
    The thing is that BIM managers don't necessarily need to do any drafting/modelling, and i love making drawings and working in 3D, so that's what is keeping me from following a BIM manager career, but maybe in the distant future i'll do that if it has a better compensation than CAD/BIM career.

      I agree 100% with you, I am an architectural grad and graduated last may. My first three years i was workign doing the architecture side at firm with emphasis on being the BIM guy. I learned to detail, plans etc but was missing the construction knowledge to support my BIM. When i got another job which was design build, i fully got into the construction process which in turn help leverage the information using BIM. Which is why i think most BIM managers i know actually started in Engineering. Becuase most architects dont want to dweleve into the process and simply want an output.
      Now im only three years experience, already became BIM manager.

My practical experience allows me to effectively manage the design projects. Recently I took the initiative to become a VDC/BIM manager. I have started to acquire the brief understanding of multiple software & its intelligence developed in AEC industry. I think in a BIM manager role you need to be good with software maybe an expert in a few. The ability to identify other experts and lean on their specialties and point them in the right direction. because there is no way to know everything. Overall I think understanding how to think holistically, if xxx is implemented what variables would effect what, what are possible unknown effects. Also, the ability to learn fast, generally leveraging other software workflows to fill in gaps of knowledge when learning new software. A big one is working with people, understanding leadership. This may vary from firm to firm Contractor or design and sizes, big or small. I would say your example is more of a BIM Coordination position description.

    Hi Balkan,
    I'm currently doing master's degree in architecture and planning of mastering my skills in revit/any other BIM softwares. Seeing that revit is the main player in malaysia's BIM scenario, that's why i'm focusing on revit right now. I'm currently repeating design studio and not sure if i'm talented enough in design. hence, that's why i'm trying to focus on revit right now because if i drop out, at least i still have undergrad degree, and i still able to pursue revit. do you think it's okay to drop out of my current master's journey and straight go into revit jobs? because it seems like, even with master's degree in architecture, the wage is very low here (around US$1000) for project architect/design architect jobs. Whereas for BIM modeller, they can start at least the same amount, but only with degree qualification. My main concern here is the wage, because it seems like jobs in architecture seems to not pay well here, compared to BIM careers or even interior design. Yeah i initially went to do master's because i want to do architecture, but because of the decreasing values of architects in our local architecture scene, and because of the pays are sadly low even for master's holder, hence i'm thinking of changing to join BIM careers. What do you think?

    BIM Managers should have better knowledge about the BIM Documents like Employer's Information Requirements (EIR), BIM Execution Plan (BEP), Level Of Information Need (LOIN), etc...
    However thank you for the video, Explained very well.

    BIM Managers don’t manage a computer. The computer doesn’t argue. (Well Revit does). We manage egos. Lol

    Ive been working with Revit in Offices for about 3 years.
    and Ive known the software as a student since 2008.
    It is definitely time and experience and more then Expert 3D modeling.
    You should know how to define Templates,
    Calculate schedules,
    Define and create families, implement them into different models.
    And probably like others have said here - be well known with the entire phases of construction.
