For me, I started not knowing anything about bim, then started working for contractors in 2013 doing HVAC coordination/shop drawings in revit with in a team of 3 (one detached local project file we made copies of, and the project browser was a nightmare, lol)... got used to the revit UI and could model anything you wanted after 8 months. in 2014, moved on to a MEP engineering firm as a bim technician and learned more about the program (shared parameters, family creation, worksets, collaboration, project templates, etc... transition from servers to revit server was a new thing) 2015, moved to another firm and got a job as design engineer and worked on a bunch of projects. I had the documentation down ok and learned about the engineering design side, so i learned the calcs and i could do the modeling/ drawings myself. later, i learned from a close coworker about using revit as an engineering tool as opposed to a drafting tool. such as friction calculations and sizing the system with revit, however, this is very cumbersome, especially with multiple people working on the same project. i think now stuff to learn that springboard off revit are the plugins that help with workflow. Dynamo was one, but i haven't heard about it since closely before COVID started. revisto was another, that's just a collaboration platform. I've never done any scripts, i just use rftools to help with any workflow i need done, if i have to do it myself cuz our bim team is busy. I have a bunch of my own families that I keep on my desktop and when we get a blank project off a generic template, i just go and set up all my stuff and get the ball rolling. other than revit, it's mostly navisworks for trade coordination that's the most helpful, but since everything is on the bim 360 platform, i think that UI is important to know.

Networking via LinkedIn can go a long way in helping you get a job abroad. Reach out to people who are part of teams you aspire to join and try to get more insight from them
For most companies considering architect graduates ( based on my past experience), the want cad, or revit users who can support construction documentation packages. That may be one way to get into a practice, then you could work late on competition work, or if your well connected you could bring in a job for the company. Sometimes it is good timing and luck 😊
Make sure you have a good portfolio and a versatile set of skills. If you have few obstacles getting certified then you can apply to most offices around the world. Anything else is secondary.
