It's actually inspired by a Carl Barks story called "Letter to Santa," in which Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge fight to death on steam shovels. Pretty cool!
This was such a unique and creative fight scene, normally you would see a standard sword fight between the protagonist and antagonist, but Steven said “eh fuck it let them fight with cranes!”
Yeah, using big dockside cranes was so creative. Especially how it started out at so large a scale and then transitioned to a sword fight after Haddock grabbed that machete thing. What was that thing anyway?

Tbf, 12 years ago is 2012(that was when CGI in movies started to look better), and this specific movie had great art direction, as an adaptation of a comic series.
I love how Sakharine (red guy) seemed to have dreamed of this day. He wanted to crush his ancestors rival to the ground, his hand to hand fight scene with Haddock was practiced, rehearsed, like he had to get it perfectly. As for Haddock bro just wants revenge for the here and now. He knows the rivalry between Rackham & Francis but seems more focused on wanted to kick Sackharine’s ass then reenacting the past. For Sackharine, this seems personal. Like he IS the reincarnation of Rackham and that is my head cannon for this film (I’m not sure about the books) in my mind, Rackham was so fucking pissed at Haddock that he carried that spite with him in his next life and he wants to REVEL in beating Haddock because he looks so much like the man that took EVERYTHING from Rackham, so not only does he want the treasure, he wants the haddock’s house (which he got) he has what seems to be a descendant of Francis’s right hand man as a butler, he TOOK HADDOCK’S CREW AND SHIP. THAT IS WAY TOO PERSONAL JUST FOR A LONG BYGONE ERA SACKHARINE LIVED UP TO RACKHAMS CURSE! Taking everything that the Haddock’s had until there is absolutely nothing left. He wants to take down Haddock, to finally get what he wants. SWEET REVENGE. Haddock tho ain’t got time for that shit and throws a fucking bOTTLE AT HIM- It’s fucking funny. I love this movie!
I think it also shows their priorites. Sir Francis Drake, at the end of the day, didn't blow up his own ship to keep the gold out of Rackham's hand. He did it for payback for the death of his crew along with his own survival. It was the case of an eye for an eye. Not to mention, if he were serious, I'm sure Drake could've found a way to make a new fortune and track down the Unicorn's cargo. But no, he must've just wanted to move on not knowing that Rackham was going to follow through with his curse.
@@wanou_4259I read the comics before watching the film and I get the change, they wanted to make an original story instead of just adapting the original story one to one which may not have translated well into a movie.
This entire movie was just filled to the brim with completely unrealistic insane balls-to-the-wall action scenes like this. They leaned into it, too. Never once did they ever go “wow this is a completely insane situation”, they just went full throttle and never moved their foot.
Best part is the flashbacks to the battle for The Unicorn. Not only is the storm pretty crazy, but once the two ship's masts get tangled, the laws of physics go right out the window! 😂
Honestly, the combination of realistic movements and facial expressions that motion cap gives you with the creative freedom provided by animation is insane
its more than that. historically even an admiral needs permission to board a captains ship if its not his fleet. on his ship that captain is god. your not allowed to board without permission, otherwise your a stowaway or worse. like trespassing in your house. for haddock that was basically one last step too far. you don't take a captains ship.
A sword fight with cranes. If the Fast and Furious movies did this, it would be cheesy as hell, but Spielberg was the right man for the job and he made it awesome.
I love how Snowy at 1:56 takes down Allan's cronies with cans from a crate that bares an image of a crab from Tintin's classic adventure, "The Crab with the Golden Claws".
given that the ship, Haddock's introduction, and the entire subplot of a malicious organization controlling the ship by ensuring he stayed drunk were also lifted from that story (where those crab tins were used for smuggling) I'm not sure whether this counts as a reference or just attention to detail. Helped to keep the original flavour though.
I would seriously ⭐ I could have a 🐶 that's gotta be the smartest as Snowy, given how all Canines are the most peak intellectual Animals to exist, even maybe even more superior in comparison than average Humans.

Thanks for keeping Tintin alive for future generations to enjoy!❤
3:00 I find it really poetic that Haddock is literally using the fallen crane's lever as his "sword". He is literally standing up and desperately trying to take control of this fight even when he know he is completely outmatched and his ship has literally tipped to it's side.
"The legend says that only a Haddock can discover the secret of the Unicorn, but it took a Rackham to get the job done." "So you've lost again Haddock, that's right, why don't you have a drink? It's all you've got left, isn't it? Everything that was rightfully yours is now mine." These lines hit so hard.
One of the best animated action films of all time. The action scenes are so fluid and dynamic, busy but always directing the eye to where it needs to go. Absolutely masterful.
No man or boy could ever resist a crane fight. It’s simply just a law of nature that if two men are in conflict and have cranes near each other a crane fight must happen
I love all the references and symbolism in the final fight between Archibald and Sakharine. "Who gave you permission to board my ship?" "I dont need it. I never needed it." Aside from this a reference to actually needing permission to board a captain's ship, it also references the fact that Sakharine is the distant grandson of Red Rackham, who was a pirate. And in a way Sakharine himself acts like a pirate. When the two fight Sakharine uses a net to throw off Archibald and is able to best him. This is similar to how Red Rackham would do the same to Sir Francis, but with a burning cape. Sakharine even gies as far as to swing his cane/sword, just like Red Rackham did when bested Sir Francis. Finally Archibald would come back at Sakharine just like Sir Francis did with Red Rackham, but do so under unique amd potentially disrespectful manners. Archibald would throw a bunch of bottles at Sakharine, while Sir Francis would face away and stab Red Rackham, then leave without killing him. Which is another point. Archibald nor Sir Francis killed their opponent directly. (Note. Red Rackham drowned, and he could have potentially escaped, but failed to do so.) Finally. While Sir Francis caught a curse, Archibald would break it.
