I’d also throw in costume design. This scene is so cool bc there is weight to the iron man suit. He actually feels invincible. I find it fitting that Tony doesn't say very much in this scene. He's undoubtedly pissed off about all of his weapons being used by terrorists. He's also really focused because this is the first time he's used his suit in combat, so he's adjusting to how much of a beating his suit can handle and how much pain he can dish out. He's also aware that very few people in this country will understand English. And on the filmmaking perspective, it creates a tone that one man has ascended above all others, and his enemies need to be afraid of him.

You are forgetting something, they were outfitted with Stark Tech gear so its entirely conceivable they would have invested in an automated tracking system for the tank in question.
Yeah. I know that the later suits are obviously technologically superior, but they seem dinky compared to this one. This is more like the old school Iron Man from the comics.

The original comics were even harsher on Tony. He wasn’t just a billionaire playboy philanthropist. He was also coked out half the time and questioning whether his family truly loved him. Ginseng was a brother and first true mentor to him. Not to mention it was the first time he was stone cold sober in years from his coke and alcoholic fueled escapades. Imagine that Tony, making the realization he was arming terrorists, he was indirectly killing thousands. That Tony plus this scene, gives you an idea of how impactful this moment is. It’s not a man on a mission, it’s a man who has everything seeking redemption at any cost, even his own life. He realized not everyone is as fortunate or as privileged or gifted as he is. Merely that we all need someone to look up to and right our wrongs. Someone with a will of iron. A damn IRON MAN if you will.
You can just feel how determined he is in this scene. Tony's not just fighting to beat the 10 rings or save the villagers, he's fighting because he knows now that he's done nothing for far too long and needs to right his wrongs. Everyone Iron Man saves in this scene is all for Yinsen, a short lived, but genuine friend who sacrificed himself for Tony and urged him to not waste his 2nd chance.

I think one of the most powerful decisions of this scene was to have Tony and Jarvis almost completely silent. Unlike in many future films where there's some banter, maybe a few funny quips from Tony. This is Tony with all that bravado stripped away. This is the real Tony Stark. A hero.
Yeah but that's what makes Tony Stark, well, *Tony Stark* after all. He's mostly known for dodging questions and confrontations with witty banter and Jarvis is to Tony as Alfred is to Bruce Wayne...if Alfred was an AI.
One of the worst, fighting with terrorists come on what is epic here. Generic enemies, done zilion times. It would be much better it was some armor special soldiers not this. Its lame. Captain America: Civil War Lagos Fight Scene that is more epic by far
I like how they don’t show Tony’s face in these scenes, it gives more of a perspective that the terrorists had, it also makes the scene more intimidating (including the fact that he only talks one time)
I also love how ironman’s face was never a happy face. Just that blank frown of vengeance. He’s not there to hold your hand and say it’ll be okay, he’s there to guarantee you’re okay.
I wouldn’t say it’s a case of it being better or worse CGI. The CGI nowadays is arguably better in terms of quality and pixel depth but what makes the difference is the use of it. In films during this time of cinema this was brand new graphics, the best shit anyone could get but because it was so expensive to use it was used sparingly and thoughtfully. Nowadays it isn’t as costly for film studios to absolutely cake that shit in CGI with concern for pockets getting thin. A lot of studios became too dependent so they fail to recognise the importance of prop and CGI hybrids So at the end of the day we’ll have to wait for that realisation. The very gritty realism is what made cinema amazing. Only very few movies successfully caked CGI. Avatar being one of them but it makes sense because of the world it’s set in. Another one I’ll point out that has excessive CGI but works is Guardians of the galaxy, but it needs it. The thing about iron man is besides the suit and few other things, they should stick to prop work and set design.
Also because most of the suit was actually made. Like, they made a physical suit to put on RDJ and the stuntmen. There was minimal CGI used on it, because most of it was real

Back when Marvel didn't need stupid jokes, stupid villains and stupid creatures coming from nowhere. Just terrorism being abolished by a serious Iron Man. That's what heroes are truly meant for.
The villains were always the weak point of the MCU, even with this movie. Sad cause they would get some fucking great actors to play some of their villains (Jeff Bridges as Obadiah Stane , Hugo Weaving as Red Skull, etc). But they're usually written as very one-dimensional. Obadiah Stane is actually an example. Bridges is acting pretty damn well, and when you first get introduced to him he seems like an interestingly intimidating character. But as the movie goes on you realize that he's basically the typical asshole in a suit strawman that sadly gets repeated quite often in the MCU. Once he reveals his true nature and puts on the Iron Monger suit, he turns into a pretty clichéd villain with some generic bad guy lines.
Tech is always upgrading. I know that you use a smartphone. Do you want your smartphone to be blocky as hell and do those monotone sounds? Of course not.
There’s one thing about this scene that I don’t see a lot of people talking about, and that is the almost fantastical nature of it from the perspective of ordinary people. Think about it. Since this was the first entry in the MCU, there were no gods, aliens, blips, avengers or magicians. To the general public, the world was still relatively normal. And then they suddenly hear reports of a village in Afghanistan that was saved from terrorists by a red and golden angel that shrugged off sprays of bullets and fired beams of light from its bare hands. The general public probably thought: “What was it? Who was it? Was it even real?” I have always found this idea fascinating. The idea of ordinary people witnessing these ridiculous events and characters for the first time and asking these questions. I hope we one day get a superhero movie that really delves into this generally overlooked part of this genre. What do you think?
That is something superhero movies should look into like imagine seeing the citizens of Gotham City being baffled reading a newspaper article or turning on the morning news channel to get details about one man dressed like a bat using unarmed combat to take down ten armed men to foil a bank robbery, and the rescued hostages and surveillance cameras would help backup the story. Or seeing the reaction of a bunch of anti-mutant bigots hearing about a team of mutants saving many people who were targeted by giant robots.
The nanotech suit is superior to this suit in every way. It’s more durable, faster suiting up, more gadgets and functionalities, more flexibility it’s movement and most importantly it’s lighter. But nothing beats the original classic Mark 3 armor
That's because it *is* heavier. Tony was able to drag his Mark 42 suit in snow all the way to a cabin, then rest it on a couch in Iron Man 3 - meanwhile, I've heard of some developers claiming they imagined this particular suit as weighing in at around 800 pounds, more or less.
I'm not sure why so many people in these comments think his newer generations of suits are somehow inferior or less cool because of their lack of perceived weight. That's... intentional. This suit would get completely shredded and outmaneuvered by the Bleeding Edge in a heartbeat. If he can shave off weight, bulkiness, gain flexibility and still maintain great resistance to all forms of damage, he does. We see the evolution of the suit go in this direction with each movie. Tony needs that mobility just as much as he needs survivability and damage resistance. His early suits wouldn't be much more than a paperweight against threats like Thanos and his army. They have to show that Tony is a prodigal engineer and super-genius somehow, too.
Back in the day when it wasn't just a superhero moment, a badass moment. The way the music play as he walks away from the tank. Like those moments where the cool guy walks away and puts the shades on. I really miss these moments. Where the creaters of the film didn't make him just look cool, but badass. There is a difference and this Iron Man was pure badassery.

Another big thing is, in this film as opposed to the Avengers films. ALL the Budget is on Iron man, rather than split amongst characters. Finally, this Film had people at the helm who were working hard to be as believable as possible. Paying attention to all the little details. Like the whirring and clicking of the Suits as their servos push and pull. Later on, I think they got a little cocky, a little lazy, and stopped caring about those little details. Iron man 3 for instance had a director (Shane Black) who clearly didn't know shit about Iron man, his mythos, and had his own "Vision". That's the problem with a lot of comic movies, DC especially. They keep bringing in people who have a "Vision". The don't care about the books at best, and scoff at them at worst. Thinking they somehow know better than the 40-60 years of history. Also you have to consider the environment Tony is in, with each movie passing, towards the Ultron era, you enter the realm of space aliens and gods fighting people, and there even turns out to be an African country (Wakanda Black Panther Arc) that has access (and subsequently deep in research) to nanotech which unlike the more practical and clunky designs of the more realistic suits, I don’t expect to have any whirring or clicking aside from the few sound effects of the nanotech moving about, and forming panels which ultimately click close in the case of the Mark 85, making Tony’s later suits a bit more realistic in terms of following the story.
The CGI was so good because the suit is made out of inanimate objects. Flesh is still VERY difficult to simulate digitally (though we got close with thanos) but cars, buildings, pretty much any object has been able to look photoreal since the 2000s. This film looks so much better VFX wise than the current marvel films. Look how amazing the suit looks, absolutely crazy.
A lot of studios became too dependent so they fail to recognise the importance of prop and CGI hybrids
So at the end of the day we’ll have to wait for that realisation.

Who was it? Was it even real?”
I have always found this idea fascinating.
This suit sounds a lot heavy and more metallic than the subsequent ones. It’s more cool this one.
nazart its was more realistic
The nanotech suit is beyond cool, but I can't help but like this one. I think I like both for different reasons.

@@atrep4585 the prototype mark 2 suit was built and was a practical effect scene
The MK2 was built but it wasn't practical. They replaced it in post with cg
@@WonderSilverstrand I'm taking about the animations with all the tech on his arms adjusting was practical effects
@@Azhan.J777 If you're talking about the control surfaces test, it actually wasn't. The whole suit was replaced with a CG model but there was a metal suit originally, it just didn't make it into the final cut
Funny how the suit looks more realistic than the one today
I think it’s because they didn’t cgi the suits unlike today
@@justjake385 Parts of both.
In this film the suit is both CGI and Practical. The Practical effects were also done by Stan Winston's studio. One of his last jobs before he passed away.
For those of you that don't know, Stan was the guy responsible for Terminator 2's effects, and the first three Jurassic Parks. Stan was a fucking master.
Whereas the best comic films have people who love the character, the books, and point to the books saying "That. We need to make that."
Thomas Jane said it best in his Punisher film. "You have this great, iconic character. Why fuck with it?"
@@MaxxCoyote a concept you are all not considering, the storyline is supposed to follow that of the comic books, each generation and iteration of the suit is supposed to mimick the functions of those in the comics, this includes the super far out of this world nanotech which was that of the Mark 50 and subsequent mark 85 suits of armor. Also you have to consider the environment Tony is in, with each movie passing, towards the Ultron era, you enter the realm of space aliens and gods fighting people, and there even turns out to be an African country (Wakanda Black Panther Arc) that has access (and subsequently deep in research) to nanotech which unlike the more practical and clunky designs of the more realistic suits, I don’t expect to have any whirring or clicking aside from the few sound effects of the nanotech moving about, and forming panels which ultimately click close in the case of the Mark 85, making Tony’s later suits a bit more realistic in terms of following the story.
you do know it only looks real cus it was also practical but don't lie when you see all of them in the newer films a lot of them look pretty realistic
The CGI was so good because the suit is made out of inanimate objects. Flesh is still VERY difficult to simulate digitally (though we got close with thanos) but cars, buildings, pretty much any object has been able to look photoreal since the 2000s. That's why he looks so good, plus the very realistic and natural lighting, in a realistic environment.
If you look at something like infinity war, you just feel like you're watching a super cool action movie, which isn't inherently bad, but that's all it really registers as: just CGI. But here, it's a realistic scenario in a realistic environment.
I hope this makes sense.

One of the most iconic Ironman Moments. Crazy to think that 11 years later and he then had nano technology which can form huge shields leg boosters and what not in an instant. I really loved how the longer we go the more advanced it gets
When I saw this I was with a buddy who is an M1 Tank driver for the US Army. He ID'd the tank as a Russian built T-80. He said the ease of its destruction was actually very realistic for this scene due to where the Russian had stored the Ammunition in regards to the crew compartment and the turret autoloader. You get a HEAT round in the spot where Tony dropped his and you've got an internal catastrophic explosion ready to go.
