SCHNEIDER SLIDER!!! FIFTH WHEEL FAIL??

  • Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching!!! I hope my viewers are enjoying the new 4K videos!!! Today, I take our flagship Peterbilt 389-X, Miller Industries, Century 1150R heavy rotator towing and recovery unit #11 to assist a customer who is having a little trouble with their fifth wheel. When the driver pulls away after performing his tug test, the trailer drops off the truck during the turn. Thankfully, it was at slow speed. Containers are always trouble for towing and recovery companies and this one proves to be no different. There is a reason they are called "wrecker killers". None of that here, though and no injuries. Just a slight little leaning problem to solve. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

    When my mom and her second husband were driving from Utah to Pennsylvania about 35 years ago, their vehicle died in the middle of nowhere. A Schneider driver stopped and then gave them a ride to the nearest garage, and made sure they were getting help before he left. I’ve thanked every Schneider driver who has crossed my path ever since.

      That's right over my years otr driving I've had a few that wouldn't trip when the went full back in the catch, and some that wouldn't release too among the best were the oe brockway fifth wheels just had to maintain them. The cheaper pressed metal ones seemed to have more issues before I decided to become more local. And dropped to a B license

    42:12 For those wondering, the yellow wheeled stand to the left of the trailer Ron is walking towards is a nose support stand that keeps a trailer in dock from falling forwards when being loaded by large, extremely heavy forklifts...

    High hitches are common in the container world. Schneider has a pretty good set up on their container trucks. They cut the framehorns back to the last x member and mount the mudflap brackets at 45°. This allows them
    To set the 5th wheel forward so the steer axle can get 12000 on it
    And keeps frame strikes down on the chassis.
    I'd love to do that to my truck.
    Boss won't let me.

    I always check my jaws. I had a trailer fall off the 5th wheel in the yard. I got the shop guys to see the jaws where still locked. They helped me get it up. Then they turn that big nut in the front. No more lost trailers. Get your 5th checked for play.

  • @Gaunt596
    @Gaunt596 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Hmm. not to speculate too much, or call the driver a liar there, but that nice curved path in the grease seems to indicate that the trailer was sitting on top of the 5th wheel when it fell off the side. Mistakes happen though, just part of being human.

    Good job Ron , shows that there is alot of different ways to rig a container on a trailer .
    In the tow truck I drove , we put our different length slings and straps in their own bags . The bags had what they were and lengths wrote on them . Made it alot easier to just get the bag out , with what I needed . Also made the tool boxs look neater .
    Hopefully it may help you if you hadn't thought of it or considered it previously

    Great job Ron. My last job I had before I retired Was driving a yard dog it was nice not having to round the dollies up and down just step out the back door and hook-up the brake lines and get back in and release them and raise the fifth-wheel and take off. Put it were you needed it and put it down unhook and you was done with that one. The only time I had any problems was when someone dropped a trialer and we got some snow and it made it set to low for me to get under it. But we had big
    Forklift and most of the time if the guy that drove it could get beside it he could lift it up so I could get under it.
    God bless you.

    Hi Ron, watching you maneuver with your extended pinkie reminded me of my later grandmother. She was part of a research team in Johannesburg, South Africa, that developed the vaccine for Polio. She was involved in a laboratory incident which resulted in the bones in her pinkie being fused. She always looked so elegant when she drank a cup of tea,
    I hope your injury heals and gives you full functionality.

    and patience. Its very great to see as a tow recovery operator myself in Beautiful upstate New York. As always great recovery! • @Underscore11
      @Underscore11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Based on what I've seen / with some inferences, Ron seems to have 4 different infinite loop "models", 2 different strengths (which seem to be denoted by color, I know the chains have a similar system), and 2 lengths (8' and 20'). In other videos Ron's reading the labels aloud to check the lengths, so there doesn't seem to be an easy way to check the length at a glance when they're all in a pile in the box (obviously it's immediately apparent if he took them out of the box, but that'd take longer).

    I’ve seen this so often, the drive attempts to couple too low, the king pin slides over the 5th wheel plate and drops over the front edge of the plate, he then does a tug test and it feels solid, as soon as he turns, the king pin slides around the plate and off comes the trailer.
    You will always find a shiny score mark on the 5th wheel plate where the king pin has been dragged across the plate. 🇺🇸🇬🇧👍

    Hey Ron, have you seen the newer Pete with an upgraded rotator which has dual steering axles up front and a triple set of duals in the rear? From what I can tell it packs a bigger powerplant under the hood, a higher lifting capacity, has more storage and is 1 heck of a beast. It would be the perfect semi-retirement present you can buy yourself while the younger generation is still cutting their teeth on your 2015 model. It would be a great father-son combination at any scene. If you haven't seen it yet; I can share the TH-cam link with you. All he talks about is “I want to be a tow operator like Ron”. He knows all the specs of the rotator. And he loves rigging. I knew a guy that drove for Yellow and was driving through a neighborhood with his truck for a delivery and he said he noticed the power company was working on the overhead lines. As he turned the corner his trailer caught the power lines and they started popping off the rooftops until they got him to stop. He told me that was the first time that had ever happened. It spooks me when you park your truck so close to an object when you lift but I also know it's better to do that for balance with a weight load.

    Good afternoon Ron
    It's unlike you to leave your ends on the spreader bar and how your finger doing

      I noticed that too. The spreader bar also looks to still be partially rigged with a strap too. At a guess, this job came immediately after the non-container - container lift from last week's video.

    Good work, Ron. It might take a while because you’re so safety minded but you and your truck get it done and that’s a good thing being safety minded.
