Motorcycle Chain Cleaning & Maintenance - CBR 250R

- I’ll show you how I cleaned and lubricated my chain on my 2013 Honda CBR250RA, part of proper motorcycle chain maintenance.
Tools required: 10 mm wrench, a plastic hand brush, Kerosene, a spray bottle, chain lube, a roll of shop towels, and gloves.
The first step was to remove the chain guard that was bolted on to the swing arm by 4 10 mm bolts. I then sprayed kerosene on the entire length of the chain while spinning the rear tire. Then I scrubbed the chain using a plastic hand brush. Next, I wiped the chain down with these shop towels. I did a wipe and rinse several times until the chain was clean to my satisfaction.
I sprayed chain lubricant and made sure the entire chain was covered. This was also a good time to check and adjust my chain’s freeplay. If you have tips on chain cleaning, let me know in the comments section. Don’t forget to subscribe.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. I've had good luck with Maxima chain cleaner and chain wax. Cleaner works fantastic. I just followed the instructions on the can. Sprayed on, let sit, scrubbed with standard 3-sided motorcycle chain brush and rinsed with water. I speed up the drying process by using leaf blower pointed right at chain while turning chain. After dry, I applied chain wax per instructions. I did not remove chain guard on my CBR250R and still had plenty of access. I'd highly recommend cleaning outside with plenty of ventilation and away from garage door opening. The cleaner has super strong fumes. And since chain cleaner cleans off with water, I'd recommend staging close to a hose bibb and an area that can receive the waste water.

In the "old days" before the advent of "o" ring chains, I used to have several chains with master links (we seem to have gotten away from master links) I would take the new chain and link it to the old chain and pull it through and reconnect it. The "old dirty chain" I mounted a BBQ rotisserie motor with a front sprocket welded to it on the garage wall and allowed the chain to rotate through a mix of gear oil and motor oil for a day and it got squeeky clean and lubed. I would then stand out in the yard and fling the chain in a circle to remove a good deal of the excess before wiping it down. This surely would well lube all the pins and links which you cannot do today. By the way, I just bought a second CBR Halloween day that is the same color as yours

Nice video and great work. But be careful. If carocene drop into main shaft baring. This will be damage and become noisy.

You may also consider the use of an anti seize grease ( copper slip) when replacing the chain guard bolts as this will allow you to use a conventional spanner next time you lubricate, avoiding damage of the hexagon head. This could also avoid the possibility of having to drill out the bolt, should you be unfortunate enough for it to corrode in the thread solid.

Use hard toothbrush for such.. works too good as it can reach in tight parts also
Are those the same used shop towels that you used to clean the chain in the 1st place? If they are then perhaps it might be a good idea to use you gloves when wiping down your chain guard assembly after you finished cleaning the chain. I mention this because perhaps your used shop towels will have kerosene on them.

how do you maintain front inner sprocket ? the acquire alot of grease in the chain guard.

My chain was recently lubricanted but the rear wheel still squeaks, would I have to take off the tyre and lube the bearings? I only have the basic at home tools to solve this problem though.

I am an owner of CBR250, and I find it hard to install the chain guard bolt behind the left foot peg. I have to remove the left foot peg to install the bolt. Does it happen on yours?

Instead of that hand brush get a Tirox Brush from Amazon... makes chain cleaning sooooo much simpler. O, and give the Dupont Chain Lube w/ Teflon a try next time too. It dries almost clear, is non-fling, and is very easy to control the spray as you apply it (you can pick it up on Amazon too). Just my $.02. As always, Thanks for the vids!!!

I did it in a lazy way. without remove the guard. just spray the lubricant on the chain.

What stands are you using?
Try DuPont Chain-Saver cleans chain and leaves a waxy coating so chain does not get dirty ...cheapest at Lowes hardware

just recently i've cleaned and lubed my bike chain but all the grime and dirt got sprayed on my wheels and other backwheel components, how do you suggest keeping things clean? especially after washing your motorcycle?
+kosemk There really is nothing you can do but to accept all bikes will get dirty eventually. The rate will depend on how dirty your environment is.
kosemk be4 you washing the bike get some grab rap wrap a round the chain , after wash take it off , and when you lubricant the bike chain stand behind the back wheelchain poit the nostrils of the spray can at the chain same time spin the wheel till you done , this way your bike always looking clean 😃😎

I have Cbr 250r with Abs ... after riding my bike I noticed that the chain was very close to the rear tyre and they are in contact everytime i ride my bike .. what could be the possible reason for this ?
+Shubham Chauhan It's possible that your rear tire is not in alignment. Take a look at the tire from the rear at a low angle. Does it look like it's turned to the left? Use a tape measure and measure the distance from both sides of the rear bolt to the swing arm mount. They should both be equal.

i think it was a bad idea scrubbing off the chain guard with the used shop towels, those chemicals could slowly start weakening and staining your chain guard, why not just wipe with soap and water?

is that chain guard necessary or can you do without?
Jonathan Garabedian it stops rocks and dirt from flicking up into it and it blocks your pants or shoe laces from getting stuck in the chain. i don't even have to tell you how bad it would be if your pants got stuck! XD

Every 500 miles you should lubricate your chain. And every 1500 miles you should do what the OP did on this video. Fully CLEAN, and then lubricate the chain.
why have you got a cbr125 and a cbr250? it sounds pointless
Grease Ninja..i know its a gimmicky tool, but hey, only $15 and does the job well.
Wrong. You have to spray some grease not just in the inside but in the "outsides" as well, as long as you've intensively cleaned the chain as you did. And after that, you go for a short ride for the joints to dilate - and then is when you do what you did in the beggining with the lube.
Want some easy good de-rusting lub NO JOKE USE BACON GREASE It will WORK all you do is put it on the chain and mix it in nice and good then spin the wheel for 15mins after that clean it and reapply
the CBR needs a exhaust change, air filter n a ecu tune, it will keep u happy for a bit :), until u plan to switch to a 600cc supersports xD

hmmm, I am interested. I have a 2012cbr 250r. Would it work for that? and what air filter would you reccomend?
+aksel joy yes it will work for any bike with fuel injection.As for air filters I'd suggest k&n performance air filter and for CBR 250 its model number HA-2511 also do check BMC airfilter. Also before u ecu tune also change your full exhaust system.

dont use kerosine.. its damge chai.
please dont use kerosene or diesel ,it will enter the wheel bearing and destroy lubrication inside the bearing ! just use tooth brushes to clean for 10 minutes and apply the chain lube !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kerosene is fine to use. It even recommends it in the owners manual. I wouldn't use diesel or petrol though as they are a bit strong and could erode seals.
