Thank you for your instructions, I am 67 years old and use a Q-16. Simple and understandable explanations (even for someone who is older). Greetings from Austria
James is a fantastic trainer!! I’ve looked at bunches of videos relative to the Qu16. He’s just cut this to the meat an’ taters, basics for the not-so- technologically adept. Yay!
Thank you for these pointers. I volunteer for our small church in the audio room...we really need help in trying to configure our audio mix so it will sound better when we livestream.
Absolutely fantastic. You have changed the way I set up levels. It’s been great to learn to gain everything up with zero on the fader, I was right down the bottom of the board before, and to have the eq for the sm58 explained. Many many thanks for taking the time to explain so clearly and professionally.
Excellent, very concise and de-mystifying approach to a complicated subject. A lot of important information delivered in a short time, but with great clarity and rationale. Thank you
Thank you. Our church has our first AV system as of just a few months ago. We also have the Qu-16. I was just able to attend an all day training for audio techs, which was great. For a novice, it was a flood of information. This video helps bring a lot of the information together. I look forward to exploring your other topics too.
Woow... You are genious sir.. Fantastic.. Explaination... All my problems got sorted out easily... Thank you a lots... Sir.. Hats off to you👍👍👍👍🌹🌹🌹🌹🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank You. This is a very helpful video. It is clear, concise, and thourough. I have owned the QU-16 for two years now, my first digital, and as a front man musician with no sound guy, I am still learning how to use the mixer., I've watched other videos on this topic and yours is the best!
Hi James. What I love about your tutorials is the way you talk to the average church volunteer instead of prattling on at other sound engineers in tech speak. You are the only one I have seen do this. All too often the videos people make simply talk about the features and benefits of the Q16 or other hardware and they never get to, "Here's how you connect and set up these components." You clearly and calmly lay out where you are going and then show how to get there in an easy-to-understand step-by-step manner. Thank you for that. Would you be able to make a video clearly showing how to set up the QU16 USB B port as both an input and an output source? We need to be able to experiment with audio going from a PC into the QU16 USB B port and also have audio go out of the QU16 USB B port to a PC. Thank you.
Thank you for your words of encouragement, it is very much appreciated. I will try to make a video for you as requested but it might be some time before I can make it for you.
Thanks for the great tutorial video. I wonder if you could explain how to set input from the library. My problem is whenever I set say SM58 for channel 1, all other channels will be changed to SM58. This is not what I want. I'd like channel 1 to set as for example Drum and 2 for guitar, 3 for piano etc. Much appreciated if you could explain how to do it.
Hello I just happened to run across your channel and this video on setting up the inputs. I actually have the same digital mixer. I would like get more info on setting up my digital mixer.
Also I don't know how can I use soundcraft mixer , where is mic input and which output is suitable for connect to my desktop, thanks a lot for your help and kindness
Great video! I'm dealing with QU-16 setup in our building using Shure PGX wireless system and AKG 48V Phantom Power mics. The requirement is to setup these mics with this mixer for like worship house, mosque or church! The issue is we barely know how to setup those mics with this mixer to provide echo clear environment where you would when you get close and far away from mic like 10inches hear the same sound. If you can share info on this we would appreciate. Thanks.
Hi James. You are an excellent teacher. I just got the QU 16 and my challenge is connecting all of my external equipment like you mention, CD player, mini disc, DVD etc in a fixed position. I will NOT be mixing at an event. I bought the QU to replace my analog Mackie board. SO...how do I get the audio say of my CD player to come up on the mixer? assigning the channels and equip is challenging. I am inputting them to a pro tools mix via the USB on the QU to my iMac. i do have an RE20 mic hooked into ch 2 that someone at A&H guided me on and it DOES record to a track on a pro tools mix. i dont need to mix in real time or simultaneously with other audio, i will record what i need from the CD player to a stereo track and then move it and edit it..i just need to learn how to set the send inside the unit. thanks. Joe J
I do not use a Mac but from what I know, any input on the QU-16 is already visible in the Mac and should be available within pro tools. If your CD player has XLR outputs, you can connect to a couple of XLR input channels such as 3 and 4 or 5 and 6. Once those are connected, you would select the "Link" to link the channels together so you can make them a stereo pair. Then you would rotate the pan on the first channel to set it to left and that will automatically set the right one at the same time. Then adjust your input gain (knob in top left corner) for each channel to be about 0. If your CD player does not have XLR outputs and has unbalanced outputs, you can connect them to a stereo input such as ST1 or ST2. The default gain should be okay. Hope this helps ...
This was great. Thanks! Could you do a video on utilizing Audio Subgroups and Stereo Mixes being sent to Matrix outputs on an Allen & Heath QU series mixer? We're using a QU-32, but I know it's similar for the QU-16/24.
HI, I was hoping you would show the physical connection of the mic to the mixer. I have my mic plugged into the back in input 1 but i cannot hear the mic through the mixer. what do i set the mixer to in its internal settings to find the mic and bring it out of the mixer and into my pro tools session?
Each input has the ability to be configured for analog or digital input connection. In order to use an analog connection through the mixer, you would need the input set to use the analog connection. You should still be able to use the USB to your computer and capture the sound from the analog input. The easiest way to change from analog to USB or USB to analog is by pressing the button beside the "Gain" control that has a USB icon. When it is lit, the USB input is active. When not lit, the analog connection is active. Be sure to select the desired channel first. The next thing is to set the global USB connection as desired. This can be set to QU-Drive or USB-B. When it is set to QU-Drive, the USB connection on the face of the mixer is active and you are able to record and playback with a USB stick. When it is set to USB-B, the USB connection on the back of the mixer is active and you can record and playback from your computer. Hope this helps ...
Our church has a SQ5.. two issues.. 1. Some speakers w/very soft voice .. no matter what the gain, congregation can’t hear the speaker 2. One of our speaker zone, I am not able to set the output higher. How do I find what that zone is ?
Great video. I now understand the adjustment of the gain and fader. But I have a question. If I put my fader and my master fader to zero, I am very loud (ofcourse) trough my speakers. My question is, what do I adjust to get the volume down? Is that the master (so it’s not on zero) or do I adjust my active speakers lower (but then in if I want to get louder, I most go to the back of the speakers and adjust). Or do I put the fader channel down? I now run my board (QU 16) and most of the time my channel faders are NOT ON ZERO, because it’s to loud ( my master is always on zero). So that’s why mine question. What do I adjust to get lower and higher volume,e out my speakers.
I am glad it was helpful for you. Typically power amplifiers or powered speakers volumes are not set to 0 but around -6. This should give you the right balance while allowing your mixer master to be increased up to +10 if needed ... hope this makes sense and hope this helps ...
Hi yeah..very useful videos..i have alto fx 1604 .It is an ok mixer ,but fx vice and headroom is less .Also cabling is messy as iam not using.snake.I want to upgrade to digital mixer like soundcraft u16 or presonus live.Any suggestion and also how about senheisser microphons e835 wireless gain structure and how many db shld i set it .many thanks in advance
Not sure if you have already purchased a new digital mixer, but if not I think a QU-16 is a great choice as the learning curve from analog to digital is quite fast and the app is very good. They also have 4 FX's, lots of sends and the ability to connect A&H personal monitors and snake/stage boxes natively. Hope this helps ...
Hi dear teacher, I have humm and buzzy in recording voice in my desktop. Would you please give me help? I looked your video about it but I need more,my microphone is dynamic
if they choose to sing close to the mic, you are able to make the adjustments to help it sound natural again. This is especially useful with multiple singers as the boominess can garble the voices together and make it hard to hear each voice clearly. Hope this has been helpful.
Thanks, I gain staged the mic led peaking near zero meter.. and you’re right, after giving the mic to the user, he spoke louder & closer than I did.. so it messed up my chain.
Hi network audio.. please can you put me through how to completely process a channel, then create mute groups, Dca, fx channel, matris, sends to bases, sends buses to matrix, output config ... plssss.. I have allen and heath cq18t. However I want to learn the process as I am a vulteeteer and I have access to behringer wing..plssssss eppp
Please see the Hardware video in our Audio Mixing Class videos. By default, a QU-16 does not have a password set so you should be able to access it out of the box. If a password is set and you do not know it, you can try to look in the manual for more information about performing a System Hard Reset on the board. Unfortunately this would erase all of the board scenes and settings but it would also clear any user passwords. Hope this helps.

When I turn on my Qu 16 do I need to have a password? How do I turn on the board to get at the working right away?
By default, a QU-16 does not have a password set so you should be able to access it out of the box. If a password is set and you do not know it, you can try to look in the manual for more information about performing a System Hard Reset on the board.
