Ask Josh to make a hand to sit the sphere in he would create something special its what Mary's art deserves. Happy New Year from Adelaide Australia 🍾

Even though the sphere is hollow, it looks top heavy on that wire stand. I find the idea of a pair of hands gently grasping it seems appealing. As if still in the sculptor's embrace... Happy 2022, Year of the House!

The wire stand is a distraction to the beautiful work Mary put into her sphere let alone plain ugly.

  • @joh7636
    @joh7636 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

I'd go with a museum/gallery type of aesthetic for Mary's sphere. The stand needs to be as unobtrusive as possible (ideally invisible!) to put full focus on the sphere. You could go with a clear acrylic holder, or paint the stand the same colour as the wall behind it in your new home. Is it destined for a niche of it's own there? I WILL stay tuned...
I really love that sphere, Alex, I'm so glad it's the one piece you chose to keep!

Joh, I agree with you 100%. I would almost like the see it under a large cloche if it was in the open, on it's stand. It might when be an idea to talk with the company insuring it to see what they suggest. I love it, too.

A couple months ago I saw two Hudson bay blankets (from the 1950/ 60s) in the drop off bins I asked if they could price them so I could buy them.... They charged me the price of any other blanket..... A whopping $3 a pop! Thrift stores are great

Your thrift shops have a lot more to offer than the ones near me! That stand you bought for Mary's sphere looks to me like an accident waiting to happen. Just one bump and the whole thing will topple over possibly breaking the one thing you kept to remind you of Mary. If the stand has to be tall, find one that is more substantial in weight and wider so that it will show off Mary's artwork while still protecting it from falling over and breaking.

I don't think you have any earthquakes in your area, but you will have 3 possible ones in your new house. I would mount any tall display stand onto a solid base to keep the ball intact. I would even consider some type of tacky tape or wall picture mount removeable glue to make sure it stays in place for an important piece like that.

In my opinion, if you're looking for stuff for your own home, the best deals at a thrift shop are lamps. They are crazy expensive to buy new and if you find one that's the shape you like, it's so easy to clean them up and paint them with whatever color or metal color you want and they look brand new with a new shade.

I've found some real treasures at Goodwill!! Including a framed 8 bar original manuscript from J. S. Bach! I thought I had it locked up at auction, but just before it came up, an older, obviously well off gentleman breathlessly stumbled in, and bid me up to all the money I had, period. A lousy $400. It was just the two of us bidding, in a group of maybe 100 people. He won, of course. I am a professional musician, and a dealer of instruments and such things. Good for him. It was listed at $25, and I prebid $105. A very rough period in my life. I'm sure he was a professor at The University of Texas, current or retired. Who knows, but he was the only other person who recognized what it was, all week, in a high traffic upscale store.

Careful, a stand becomes part of sculpture and that wire stand clashes with the sculpture. A clear acrylic cylinder might work better. Or a clear cylinder shaped glass vase would be more consistent with the modern style. Measure the width of the sphere so you know the diameter of the vase that would work. Dollar Tree, Michael's, Joanne Fabrics,, and other craft stores sell glass cylinder vases.

Spray painting that stand silver would make the orb stand out. Fun find!

Personally I'd have totally bought that gorgeous vase and then tucked it away as a 'surprise honey!' housewarming gift for the new place, or at least a happy smile thing that'll be nice to look forward to. But that's just, like, my opinion.

Did you try turning the stand upside down? Those curly ques would make good feet. I was telling at my phone for you to turn it over, like you mentioned you may try.

In my own artistic movement and I would turn the stand over and use them "arms" as "legs"

I love a good wing chair - when covered in modern fabric they can look fab
Melt a Camembert in the micro wave and dip with crusty bread the 21st century fondue

My Daughter feels like people donate to these places so that people who can not afford to pay retail price can afford to own them. I guess when I donate it is often just a way to down size. I do feel better when you go direct to the seller.

That stand is too busy looking for the plain sphere. You need something simple that won't detract from it. Happy New Year to you, Melissa, Stephen, Jason and Abigail.

That cut out wooden chair made me smile, it reminded me of the famous chair Christine Keeler sat nude in. It caused a huge political scandal in the UK government in the 1960's.
