Typos on social media and having their feet up on the dashboard are just a few critiques a certain public figure has received from viewers. Since the age of 12, eyes have been on this young actress for her breakout role as eleven in the Netflix series, Stranger Things. That actress is Millie Bobby Brown. While generally well liked, Brown has been demonized for trivial matters such as these ever since her climb to fame. However, she isn’t the first who has had to deal with hate as massive as this. We’ve seen the same type of disdain for teen public figures such as Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, and Charlie D’ Amelio. Today, we explore why this happens. What causes an audience to criticize a famous teen girl for essentially nothing?

Kids and teenagers don't always realise how immature they are compared to adults. I got into online gaming, a hobby dominated by men in their 20s - 30s, at only 14. Most of the groups I was a part of were filled with adult men, most of whom were very nice people and respectable. However, there were a couple who were a bit sus if not downright predatory and only now that I'm an adult can I see just how inappropriate some of the situations were that I found myself in. Back in the day I didn't see the harm in being blatantly hit on by some 25 year old man who knew my age, because I thought I was mature. In hindsight I wasn't mature at all; I was just like any other 21st century teenage girl.
I definitely got that impression from Millie talking about Drake. She likely had no idea how uncomfortable the situation was to adults who knew better.

Younger Millie acted loud and excited and confident- she reminded me of the way boys that age would act in my school. Which isn't surprising, considering she was the only girl her age on set for the first season and didn't really have any big shared moments with Sadie on screen until season 3.
It was easy for people to pick on her undeservedly, because she stuck out the most as the only girl (and the most popular young actor of the show) and nitpicking her every typo and quirk. imo if you already have chosen to dislike a complete stranger, you'll also actively be annoyed by completely innocuous behavior. It's weird that there's this EXPECTATION for parasocial relationships even though we recognize they're bad, for some reason everyone is still expected to be likable AND good at their job. As someone who is waist-deep in the world of academia, there are tons of people who I look forward to working with but would absolutely never invite out for a drink. All those commenters on the world tour video want that experience, but I bet they complain to their best friend for hours when a coworker is less than exceptionally friendly to them. Fame ain't it.

She seems very intelligent and eager to work in the industry, and I think that's a good thing. Hearing her talk just sort of reminded me of some teenage cousins or family friends who I get tired of talking to after a while It's nothing I think she could or should change about herself. We're just in very different places in our lives and I'm not invested in her personally enough to particularly care. It's different when you have a personal relationship with someone like a younger sibling or child or someone else you've watched grow up. Even if they talk like they have everything figured out, it comes off as eager and adorable rather than a little annoying. It's not a big deal not to like a kid that talks your ear off at a wedding or at work, you just kind of smile and nod and move on once you get away, but because celebrities are constantly pushed in people's faces, I think people react really poorly and instead of just ignoring the content, they get vocal about their annoyance which is dumb but not surprising as people tend to be reactionary on the internet rather than introspective.

She's an excited teen growing up in unrestricted social dominant times. She's just like kids her age.
It's just her personality that she's so open and boisterous. Yet had she been a boy, that would be overlooked or seen as boys being boys.
Though I think how she was styled and news media exposure, lead to people criticising her instead of the adults that should be protecting her.

I wouldn't completely direct it to misogyny. I think people just get annoyed when the media and Hollywood shove an actor That's just blown up down your throat in every show interview movie advert and newspaper. The reaction to this is always very very toxic and visceral but it isn't exclusive to female celebrities. The worst case of this by FAR was Justin Bieber. The guy got so much hate in his early years for blowing up and being plastered everywhere that even being nearly 30 the guy still can't fully shake that image and reputation. Other examples are Jacob sartorius, James Charles, Tyler Oakley (I see these inclusions as valid as they're TH-camrs that are bigger than most movie stars and became mainstream Hollywood status), Lindsay Lohan, Soulja boy, lady Gaga, like half the cast of game of thrones (especially joffrey, he got so much hate for being good at acting he retired), Susan Boyle, Britney spears, the list goes on. In many ways it's got nothing to do with the actual person or their gender, it's the fact they're shoved down people's throats that causes the aggressive reaction "who the fuck is this person and why are they everywhere I look? They don't even seem that good at what they do or seem very nice" and then the snowball effect begins

I was even criticized--and still am, occasionally--for "laughing too much." Meanwhile, boys who were just as loud and exuberant (in my case, brothers; in hers, her costars) were popular, "cool," and "hilarious." It's a crappy feeling to be hated like that. The media was unnecessarily harsh on Millie Bobby Brown. She was a kid when she started and interviews were new to her. She wasn’t even being rude in the interviews. She was bursting with excitement and was being herself. She didn’t deserve the backlash or the online harassment for being an excited kid.

i also believe ppl hate her due to outward misogyny by the dudes and internalized misogyny by the gals. something just irks ppl when a girl/woman is succesful without having to conform to society's expectations of a "successful woman". cuz that whole part of her speaking over the rest of the cast (who just so happen to be boys) is a literal sexist stereotype of outgoing and unapologetically expressive woman being perceived as "bitchy". i havent even watched stranger things and always found it so disturbingly odd and confusing of the hate millie receives. SHES A KID (or was) but like she's literally done nothing wrong??? meanwhile ppl excused drake's p3dophilic behavior??? and then also victim blaming her for having dated someone that cheated on her???? and how is it her fault that her brother is homophobic???? like what the actual fuck. i also refuse to believe that bringing down a more sucessful person than you can make you feel better about yourself becuz if you are constantly doing that throughout your life, you lost focus of you individual self and prevent yourself from growing and improving as a person. so in the long run, you just end up becoming depressed by your own actions. a uno reverse on yourself

Listening to those comments on the Netflix video is so sad. There will always be people who want to be famous, but it feels like this era we are in, where social media rules everything, narcissism is rewarded more often, and practically promoted. It's making more people feel that fame is the only way to get ahead in life.
Also, kudos on finding a shirt that accurately captures the opening credit sequence of Saved By The Bell.

When I started watching stranger things at 10 or 11, I thought it would be so cool to be friends with Millie. At 12 or 13 I started disliking her when my slightly smaller mind noticed all her hate and assumed that it must be justified. That and I was a little jealous. Now I'm 14, and though I'm not much older, I think I've grown, and don't hate her at all. I've actually examined the points made against her and I'm honestly just sad that kids can't act like kids anymore. I don't think I've gotten more confident in myself; I've just gained more perspective. I also think the progression of how I felt about Millie is pretty interesting and fitting for the age I was.

Watching this, as well as hearing from ex-child-stars like Jeanette McCurdy and Allison Stoner, leads me to believe that childhood mega-stardom always becomes abusive. Being in the public eye to a massive degree creates psychological trauma that is not appropriate for developing brains, and carrying multi-million dollar projects on your back is a responsibility that's too great for any kid to bear. Many child stars have turned out alright, but I believe they survived IN SPITE of all that abuse. Call this a radical take: but I think nobody under 18 should be in film or television. Have older actors play kids or use CGI/animation.

it seems like they only want to put adults in media as teenagers if that means they can get away with highly sexual content. Sad really and i agree children shouldn't be in the industry the way it is. No matter how strong the child is, they are almost always traumatized and deal with a lot of mental issues even into adulthood.

Do the same take over and over again, need to be under constant watch under an agent, pr team, or manager; and feel like that almost everyone they meet only there to gain something for them. (There are some exceptions but that goes without saying)

I had an unnaturally high level of anxiety around social interactions growing up. I quickly learned that this was a sure way to become a victim of bullying, not just by known bullies but by everyone. People don't even seem to know they are doing it.
Studying social isolation from an academic perspective I began to understand what it is that makes people so vicious. We live in a status-seeking society, again most people are unaware of the extent to which this affects our beliefs and attitudes about everything. It makes us psychologically violent against anyone who might upset the order of human interactions.
If anyone starts to get attention that doesn't "deserve it" by what we perceive to be society's narcissistic standards we feel not only justified in attacking them, we may go so far as to claim that it's our duty to judge them for the greater good, for everyone's mental health.
But at a deeper level what we are really doing is attempting to prove that we are worthy of the kind of status that our society values: that of a bully.

From someone in their early 30s: can y'all imagine what social media would be like if we had it when we were growing up? The Britney vs. Christina and Backstreet Boys vs. N*Sync "wars" were bad enough just from how non-techonological people (including the media) said and acted.
I feel bad for these kids, especially Millie (yes I am aware she is 18 now and therefore an adult, doesn't change how I feel) - she and the rest of her castmates, past and present, should absolutely be having the time of their lives and be happy and live in the moment instead of most likely getting mentally scarred for life because of faceless people on the internet or media outlets just throwing buzzwords out to try and get clicks/views.
