      I like that you gave it another try! But I also would have liked more of your own thoughts about the songs. In the first reaction, you also didn‘t comment that much on what you thought about the songs because you were confused. You could have talked first about your new impressions after getting more context before reading the summary. I still liked watching your reaction! :)

    In the original he stays alive just long enough for to see Odysseus again; but Ody has to ignore the dog when he comes to greet his master to fulfil his plan

    the whole sa thing does in fact happen in the og story, very explicitly in fact, which is surpising for the time period. Some of the translations of lines of that part of the story going as follows.
    “In the nights, true, / he’d sleep with her in the arching cave - he had no choice - / unwilling lover alongside lover all too willing”
    "Calypso is singing with her “breathtaking voice” and weaving at her loom while Odysseus “sat on a headland, weeping there as always, / wrenching his heart with sobs and groans and anguish, / gazing out over the barren sea through blinding tears”
    Calypso would use him as such every night for the 7 years, bearing two children with him as refenced in the theogony, though this work came later it is still of note. In the odessey this would be the second time he'd be assaulted as in the original circe too, is less than properly consentual, though hers in a fashion where the change made for epic between them is still fitting. Calypso is simply stated.
    Calypso's amusement here with odyessuess resistance, calling hom adorable, and her focus on how "life would be worse if he died", as it would be worse for *her*, when trying to speak him off the ledge, show that. As well as her usage of other's lines. Calling him ody as eurylochus had, saying he'll always be in her heart as odyessues mother had. Open arms, as polities had. All of which she has learned over the years of him talking in his sleep, as she had mentioned he does. Calypso is lonely, and will use odyessues to sate that.

    • @sunshi4929
      @sunshi4929 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +50

      This is my favorite analysis with reference to the Odyssey. People say the book shouldn't be used as a reference since the musical doesn't follow it fully, but when things are left open, the implications are clear. With circe, the song clearly went against the source with the fact that although she was charming him, he never fell under her spell because he directly interrupts her, changes the focus and gets out of there; whereas with Calypso, nothing is explicitly mentioned that draws us away from the conclusion that Jorge probably didn't stray from that part of the source this time.
      People who say that the sa didn't happen fail to realize that Jorge left a 7 year gap that proceeded calypso's incessant need to be with Odysseus. Though he clearly stated he didn't want this, like with circe, Calypso simply told him there was nothing he could do, "mine, all mine", with no refocus, and then boom, 7 years later and he's on a cliff and athena states hes been trapped under her control. If she had been a companion instead, I doubt he'd have driven himself to that extent of suicidal ideation, and I would assume that Jorge would make it obvious that nothing happened just like he did with Circe.
      Great observations of the end of that song as well! Made me tear up a bit

    • @Jmnl-b2l
      @Jmnl-b2l 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      @@sunshi4929 You get me. I would call epic less an adaptation, and more a version of the odessey, as the story like many of that time, was originally spread via word of mouth. Any written works will be a version, of what was heard and known with reflections of the culture and opinons of the writer. Epic is no different. Circe was very noticably and specifically changed. One could go with the interpretation of ody being fairly distressed during it, my fave personally being anniflamma's animatic as it is a nice mix of simple seduction and that, of course, uneven power dynamic. But it is still changed. Circe relents in a way that feels proper to the story and even the source in some aspects.
      With this, though, there is that time skip. Calypso's line of climbing into bed with him, and the following denial immediatly ignored by her, a big indication that in this version she AT BEST, sexually harassed him, which would harrowing enough for him on its own. To be driven so far, though, even with his past traumas, we see an escalation in his pain, and her there as an easy source to name. It is not wrong to use the book to explore these characters further, as it is for the book alone, that this musical exists. It does not mean people are not allowed to like calypso as a character, but it is immensely noticable he does not want her advances and the state "living in paradise with her" that has left him in, is a huge indication.

    • @qryptid
      @qryptid 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +17

      @Jmnl-b2l YEEESSSSS I feel like people get confused that by saying Calypso treated him the way most gods treat mortals- as objects to entertain them- doesn't make her a bad character, it doesn't mean you can't love her or her songs or her gorgeous vocals by the incredibly talented Ms Wangui, but it does mean that she is the child of a Titan who was treated in a messed up way and went on to use Odysseus in a messed up way. In the Odyssey, when Hermes comes to Calypso she pines that the gods are always meddling in affairs between gods and mortals and basically has a tantrum that it's unfair- and then relents and let's her favorite toy go. It's not quite star crossed lovers, it's very much one sided, and I think Epic sticks with that depiction of her.
      Love Calypso. But man Ody has been through way too much

    The two kids has been a topic of debate on whether it’s true or not, but, yeah, everything else is spot on. She was so alone and delusional that she thought everything she did was ok. As Ody said- he was just a pet to her. Something cute to “entertain” her. While reading The Odyssey, my heart absolutely broke with the lines of him going to the beach and crying. Man couldn’t leave the island, unlike the sea where he always felt he had a way out. So, (and I WISH there had been TWs for these), grief, depression and suicidal thoughts overcame him. He wanted it all to end. After ten years, his first cry of despair was to the goddess who had left him. If she hadn’t answered, I have no doubt the musical would end with his death.

    The dog, Argos, is _old_ . He was around when Odysseus was home, but he’s still alive to protect the family.
    When Telemachus says asks for help, the screen flashes blue. Athena was watching.
    The Olympians shown are gods. There are twelve major ones, and those are a few. Zeus is the god of gods, then comes Poseidon and Hades.
    Hera is Zeus’ wife, but, yk, man doesn’t really care. That’s one reason why Athena’s “never once has he cheated on his wife” worked.

As in mythology, he did take away Asclepius's (Apollo's son) power by striking him with his lightning bolt, this was also done to Apollo (he got it back later) after he took revenge against the cyclops that made the lightning bolt.

    Fun fact; the pre-choruses for Legendary are reprisals of Full Speed Ahead.
    Also, Jorge had said he wanted this Saga to really feel like progressing through levels of a game. So we get like an actual game-like animatic for the whole song of Little Wolf, and God Games is supposed to be like going through levels as well. Jorge has been super inspired by games as well as anime for his music.
    For We'll Be Fine, apparently for the "then his light went dark" bit, Athena is directly referring to Polites. There's the cut song for him called Your Light; she's calling Polites Ody's Light, and when he died that Light went out.
    Watch Jorge's face during the last bit of Love in Paradise. He WROTE this trauma and even he's affected watching that whole bit.
    For God Games, Ares' motif is the same as Athena's, just with a different instrument. They're both different sides to the same War coin, so it makes sense they share a motif.

    While the whole "Calypso SA" thing may have happened in the original Odyssey, it doesn't seem to happen in Epic. Firstly, Calypso acts much less forceful in Love in Paradise than in the og story, she is specifically linked to Polites with the "open arms" thing, and honestly, I doubt they would link her to Polites if she was doing things that horrible. Not to mention in the demo for "Not Sorry for Loving You" (the next Calypso song in the next saga) Odysseus admits he loves her, just platonically rather than romantically, and I doubt he would do that if he was literally being assaulted by her.

Calypso called him "Ody" like Eurylochus, said she would "stay inside [his] heart" like his mother did in the Underworld and "open arms" like Polites. So, logically this triggers him to remember all three of these lost loved ones and hear their voices.

    I loved your reaction 🤩, tbh the visual do make it easier to understand.
    I don't believe Athena is actually dead, in Greek mythology it's said that the god's bleed gold ichor (gold blood), I think what calypso said it true, they can't die. or zeus may have stripped Athena of her divinity before hitting her with a final lightbolt, but I doubt that.

    In Love in Paradise, Calypso mentions that Odysseus talks in his sleep which then ties into her chose of words at the end of the song.
    Things he was probably saying in his sleep--
    * "i'll stay inside your heart" is what his mother was saying when in the Underworld
    * "open arms" obviously opens arms is Polites song
    She was attempting to console him with words from his past but ends up triggering a panic attack. Notice how after she says 'stay inside your heart' is when he starts singing louder. He's trying to drown out her words. just to make that song even sadder.
    In God Games, specifically Ares and Aphrodite and Hera.
    First what you gotta know is that in the greek myths (depending where you read) Hephaestus takes Hera hostage and Zeus gives him Aphrodite to wed to appease him and release Hera. BUUUUUTTT Aphrodite is lowkey tryna be with Ares. After Hephaestus finds out about Ares and Aphrodite he locks them up in the gold bedroom to humiliate them and expose their infidelity to the rest of olympus. Hence why they conceded kind of begrudgingly coz she brings up them being lovers on top of debasing their points. And also it is very well known that 90% of Greek Mythology stems from Zeus being unable to keep it in his pants and not being faithful to Hera, Hence why Hera concedes after hearing that Odysseus has never cheated on Penelope despite being apart for 20yrs.

    The implication that Calypso sexually assaulted Odysseus is not clearly defined, as interpretations vary. In 'Love in Paradise,' Odysseus expresses regret over the loss of his men and friends, avoiding any suggestion of assault. Similarly, 'Epic: The Musical' omits any such implications, notably excluding the episode of Odysseus with Circe. Further evidence against the notion of assault is Athena's assurance to Hera that Odysseus remained faithful to Penelope, suggesting a different dynamic between Calypso and Odysseus.

    during the calypso song it wasn't just Polites that she references in the song we heard his mother and his second in command the reason why their voices appeared was when she called him Ody which is the name his second in command called him by and for his mother, she says I'll stay inside your heart which his mother told him in the underworld which made it so much better when all three of them were heard

    god of war, specifically war as experienced by soldiers - the fighting, the pain, the bloodshed as opposed to Athena, goddess of war as fought by generals (through strategy)
    kind of the punchingbag of the pantheon in most tellings, but if you read between the lines he really is exactly as cool as he looks - plus v protective of whatever kids he has (surely nothing to do with him being the god of war right

    What little I know of about Calypso or Kalypso (Other than Calypso is a type of music, of which is played for her song and she has steel drums before she begins to speak as a hint to who she is) is that she is a nymph daughter of the Titan named Atlas/Oceanus/Nereus (Various mythology stories as is normal) and sea nymph Pleione/Tethys. We actually have no information of what she's supposed to be a Goddess OF really, only guess I've ever seen is she's a sea Goddess of beauty. Oh and uh, one little fact I know is she has "been" with Hermes before.
    Calypso music is really nice if you ever look it up. The steel drum is a very distinct instrument.

    Jokes aside, you’re a visual learner and that’s fine. For someone who has no background on the Odyssey, isn’t heavily obsessed with Epic, or doesn’t want to be spoiled by seeing previews and pre-Wisdom Saga clips, I can understand how this happened.
    Also, purely because of God Games, I think we would have asked you to react to the stream anyway. That ending is something to behold when you’ve only listened to the song and have no idea THAT happened.
    Also, fun fact! In “Love in Paradise”, Calypso says that goddesses can’t die. HOWEVER, in actual Greek Mythology, there’s one god that Athena personally knew who died. She was her friend Pallas, child of Triton, who was coincidentally killed by Zeus :3

    I don’t think Athena’s dead. Not only would that not make much sense in the context of the mythology, but in the original Odyssey, Athena plays a key part in Telemachus’s and Odysseus’s stories after the whole God Games thing. Also, gods technically can die, but there are usually traces of them. The original god of the sky, Ouranos, was killed by his son and Zeus’s father, Kronos. Kronos was later killed by Zeus. However, Kronos was still technically alive. His body, chopped into millions of tiny pieces, was thrown into Tartarus, the deepest part of the Underworld. Also, Ouranos still technically has traces left. Aphrodite was born from the chunks of Ouranos’s body foaming in the ocean. Also, the titan Atlas had to hold up the sky from touching the Earth as a punishment for siding with Kronos in the titan war. I don’t know if the mythology explicitly states why he has to hold up the sky, but I’m pretty sure it’s because Ouranos was married to the goddess of the earth, Gaea. So yes, a god can technically die, but they can still linger in some ways.

    I mean at least when it comes to greek mythology, gods can, and have very much died. The Olympians (Zeus and the gang) killed their own parents and took power, and Zeus (kindof like Odin in Norse Mythology) is hung up on prophesies and such, and is terrified that humanity will one day be powerful enough kill them.

    I’ll say, Ares’ pot shot at Telemachus may seem kind of uncalled for. But given what Ares’ represents. It’s almost understandable. There isn’t many excuses you could give Telemachus for how his fight with Antinous played out. You can’t say ‘he’s just a kid though!’ Because Telemachus is 20 years old already. Most warriors or just average men back in Ancient Greece at least learned how to fight way before the age of 13. Not to mention Telemachus was the one who squared up with Antinous even if Antinous was the one provoking him. Maybe Ares would’ve respected his courage. But the fact that ATHENA was the one who came in, gave Telemachus a buff and Telemachus STILL lost?! Ares is no doubt pissed about that because he probably was rooting for Telemachus.

    It’s not really on you… the other sagas are very easy to understand without animations, this saga I think was not written as well lyrically. You basically *have* to have prior knowledge or watch the animations to get what’s happening here, especially in Little Wolf and God Games.
