Thanks Matt. Followed your instructions & my 2012 MacBook Pro is rocking Monterey like it was born to do it. That's good enough for me; all I needed was an OS that would run GarageBand and the latest Google Chrome; this build fits the bill perfectly. You rock sir! Thanks!

Great instructions! I bought a used 2012 Mac Mini on the cheap, just run a certain program that I needed. Nice video, but absolutely no need to erase your original OS when installing or upgrading your OS. It will install/upgrade over it perfectly well, just as if you'd done a standard OS upgrade from Apple. All your Apps and settings are still there. No need to recover them from a Time Machine backup (although do still make one).
Upgraded an HFS+ High Sierra machine to APFS Big Sur with OCLP and it both translated the disk system from HFS+ to APFS as well as did the installation and upgrade to Big Sur. Because that's what Apple does and they're actually doing the work. OCLP just says "Yes, this machine is compatible (wink), over to you Apple." When all the dust has settled, it applies any required patches.

Can't thank you enough for this video Matt. It has saved me a small fortune. I bought a new MacBook Pro last year because I was stuck on High Sierra on my (mid 2011) 27" iMac with 24GB of RAM and 1TB SSD and couldn't upgrade to the latest levels of PS and LR for photo editing and other software that I use. My iMac was working perfectly apart from that. I was about to invest in a new monitor to go with my MacBook Pro as I missed my 27" screen for photo editing. Your instructions were very clear with plenty of warnings on backup etc. I did have a few squeaky bum moments as I could not get my bluetooth Magic Mouse or Keyboard to connect after installing Monterey. I had to borrow USB versions of both from friends to get past these steps. However, once Monterey was fully installed and rebooted both connected as I would expect. I don't know if you have tried installing this on an iMac, but I would suggest that you recommend to have USB mouse and keyboard available just in case. Thanks once again.

had a bit of trouble on a mac mini 6,1 from 2012. followed the instructions and ignored the prompt to install opencore to the usb after creating the installer, which seemed odd. installed to efi of the machine instead as recommended. maybe i misheard. a short while after starting install, came back to a powered off machine. when powering on no chime, wouldn't boot from either choice after using option key to boot - received a circle with line through it and link to support mac startup website. grabbed a backup mac and installed opencore to the usb installer, made sure to choose correct target model identifier. then was able to complete install. and now can boot off the hard disk no problems. thanks for this guide! all to get automated captions from captionator. now to reinstall my digi 002! lol wish me luck. i'm not frugal you're frugal. if I were to do this again, I would focus on writing opencore to the efi of the usb installer initially and post install would install both opencore to the efi and also the post install patch. the patch said it was already completed but i did it anyways and it overwrote all the files.
I used opencore 0.6.6 and monterey 12.6.6. downloaded monterey elsewhere not through opencore. hope this helps someone.

I’ve been stuck on BigSur for too long.
Bought a refurbished MacPro a few years back with a non-apple SSD hard drive and everywhere I looked, the update just didn’t work. This finally got the job done.
Thank you for the step-by-step tutorial, my machine is running great!

Brilliant - all working on my mid-2014 MacBook Pro with Nvidia. One question though - now when I restart or switch on, it asks me to choose the hard drive when it never did before. There's only one hard drive anyway and it's not stopping anything from working, so not a big deal but it's just an extra step. Is this normal?

Do you also automatically get software updates from apple if you run Monterey on an unsuported Mac?

Thank you for this info. I installed Monterey on an 120GB SSD from OWC that I had bought for a Mac Mini expansion, in an external enclosure. So my late 2008 MB Pro 5,1 w/8GB RAM now runs OS 10.11.6 from the spiny drive, or with the external plugged in it runs Monterey. It took me a few tries to get the installation right and the 'About one minute remaining' at the end took an hour or more to finish. I have some things that won't run on the latest OS so this gives me two machines in one. Further info on my MB - This machine sat for years, I thought it was dead, because the power supply light was on and the machine wouldn't work. I plugged in my old power supply from another MB by accident one day and this MB came back to life.

If you're getting the error "Command not found" while installing the update just make sure your usb drive is completely erased and formatted to do this open disk utility plug your usb drive into your Mac and then click on the usb drive and on the top click erase and for the format click macOs Extended (Journaled) (it may appear as OS X Extended (Journaled) you can click it) and for the Scheme put GUID partition map then click erase now you're all set to install the update 😁

With your help, I installed MacOS Monterey 12.5 on three old Apple computers: A MacBook Pro 13-inch Retina (Late 2013), a Mac mini (Late 2012) and an iMac (27-inch, Late 2009). It's sad that these perfectly good machines are denied the latest operating system by Apple. My MacBook Pro already had solid state storage, but by just installing SSDs into the Mac mini and the iMac, they're working great. (Note, the Find My and Maps apps don't work on the 2009 iMac). I really appreciate your help and I appreciate the work of the team who developed Open Core Legacy Patcher.

I have an iMac 27 mid 2010, and i tried to install Monterey and also Big Sur, first problem with installing Monterey, i needed to use another brand of keyboard because right after the efi boot, the install menu didn’t detect my keyboard. This didn’t happen when installing Big Sur. However i never could install neither of the OS’s. I always got the forbidden signal right at the end of the install being complete, i even didn’t find how to install the High Sierra again, my iMac is dead. In the past i think OpenCore could install High Sierra, now it doesn’t show it as an option to install.

Thanks Matt, I have just got a 2012 Mac Mini cheap off eBay as my first Apple product (haven't been able to afford one before), it was better than I thought, it came with a 256Gb SSD and 8Gb RAM as opposed to 128 SSD and 6Gb RAM advertised. I've just upgraded to Catalina but can't load a lot of Apps I want. So I'm hoping I can use Opencore Legacy Patcher to bring it up to Monterey 😊

It's incredible to see that it's possible since my old MacBook has become quite slow with outdated apps. I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro with High Sierra with SSD upgraded long ago. Can I make another apfs partition volume and install Monteray on it while keeping the Higher Sierra start-up volume intact. This way I can select the start-up disk and boot into the new or old OS - just be on the safer side for some days - to make sure that everything works as expected. I can erase the older one later.

Hi Matt, I did your OpenCore install of Ventura on my Early 2014, i7 8Gb RAM 1.7HHz Dual-Core 13 inch MacBook Air and that seems to work fine for my needs. But it now wants to install Sonoma and I am not sure that is a good idea, what do you think? I am going to try Monterey on a early 2011 MacBook Pro which is just laying around at the moment.
