EDIT: I don't usually like to explain the jokes in my videos, but the "they're better at clicking on the bad men" is not a serious comment. I wrote it as a joke but in retrospect it doesn't really read as one, if I wanted to make that statement more accurately I'd say that the biggest difference between me and "the real gamers" is the fact that they're in comms, they're running one of the actual designated "meta" comps, and they're better at clicking on the bad men. Every single ranked match I played where my teammates joined team voice and communicated was a complete steamroll, every time they didn't we got steamrolled. Am I better than the other players in plat? I have no fucking idea, I just know that I didn't want to keep doing that 15 minute coin flip over and over just to get to the point where I had the right color under my hero portrait for my opinions to magically become valid. I'm not trying to convince you that Overwatch is bad, if you like it that's great, I'm just trying to explain why I don't.

Yeah, this video tool a really long time to make, even by my standards. I know that. Don’t worry, I have explicitly mapped out the next few videos to be about things that I don’t feel the need to be SUPER in depth about, and I’m also never ever EVER making a “full review” of this many games ever again because structuring this was an absolute nightmare. I’ve also been having a huge upswing in my mental health over the past few months, which is hopefully going to help future videos come out faster.
I think working creatively sort of requires you to strike a balance between making stuff as high quality as you possibly can while also putting things out in a somewhat timely manner, and this video definitely doesn’t do that for me. My goal for 2019 is to post at least 7 videos, which I know a lot of people would laugh at but I don’t want to go back to churning out stuff I’m not happy with every month and I feel like 7 gives me enough time to make them meet my personal standards of quality. I like being able to take my time on stuff, but there’s a limit to that. I’m finding my sweet spot, and I’ll get there eventually.
It also didn’t help that I gave myself a few “challenges” to help me improve as a writer for this video, now that I think about it.

I think the hardest part of this video was the fact that you somehow completely sold me on Gigantic just to end up telling me that this amazing game I'd never heard about had actually already died.

I was genuinely looking forward to downloading Gigantic after hearing Shammy explain how good it is. You can't imagine the disappointment and sadness I felt when he said that it was literally shutdown.

I had no knowledge about Gigantic, but your review absolutely sold it to me. I was honestly planning on showing it to my friends and trying to get them into it. To hear how much it was screwed over really depressed me as it meant that a game I would love to play is now dead forever.
As much as I wish and hope that the team gets back together and the game is somehow going to be one day supported, I know with almost 100% certainty that it won't happen.
Glad you took a break from making the podcast to finish your vid, it was worth it!

I miss Gigantic. I was one of those idiots that couldn't run it on my college laptop back when it was still tucked away on that client. I upgraded sometime during school to a pc, went back to this game and had a blast. I still remember how much I fun I had with Sven's goofy kit, out ranging other melee champs with Aisling, and just being a power house with Zandora. The game was honestly just PERFECT, and probably the only reason I ever picked up OW and Paladins, but it just never felt the same. Gigantic had heart because how much love the developers put into it, but it also had an identity that made it stand out. I hate so much that we're in a time where we are for some reason getting an overhyped OW2, but Gigantic doesn't exist.
I'm never gonna stop being upset that they didn't just cut official servers and allow for community servers to be a thing, man.
This game is getting reborn by the community and it's going pretty well. It probably won't be exactly the same and probably won't have the same design, but at least it's not lost to the abyss of amazing, but undersold and underrated games forever.

Cuphead developers mortgaged their houses, cars and all kinds of property to work on their game too. But luckily for them, their hard work did pay off.
And the saddest part is it didn’t pay off. They made a fantastic game but it’s delivery killed it.

That dedication has never gone away - rather it is has been turned into a tool of exploitation to make some random share holders more money instead of properly paying their developers. The industry basicly runs on draining the life blood of passionate developers which I see as the biggest mark of shame of games as a whole.

Just tried it out for the first time after missing out the first time and being hyped up by this video but I'm not gonna lie: why was this game so hyped? Every match has been pure chaos where all of my teammates pick ranged damage characters while I play the either lone tank or support. It's impossible to tell what's going on in the game cuz there's 800 purple and blue circles on the ground and everything just kind of blends together. I was super disappointed
Gigantic has to be one of the saddest stories in gaming, RIP Motiga.
Dr. Own agreed. Same with battleborn, believe it or not they didn’t intend to release it when overwatch was coming out. Blizzard delayed over watches release to a week after battleborn’s. So basically battleborn could have lived but blizzard found a way to screw them over.
I appreciate the fact that he used recent Paladins footage (extra points because he recorded it himself!) most reviews I've seen for Paladins are not only biased, but they also use really old footage they downloaded and it makes the game look pretty crusty.
He seemed really experienced and is playing with pretty good players. I've seen z1 and helvian in the killfeed this video

@@upshitdownshit4200 All tf2 lacks in terms of Competitive is a structure given to them by Valve. almost all of Comp is community based, and while that means that we get to dictate our own rules, it also means that the real Tf2 comp scene is hidden from most pub players that want to progress. otherwise, Tf2 has one of the most stable competitive gameplay experiences I've ever played (next to quake)

Great comparison on Paladins, as someone who loves Paladins, enjoys Overwatch casually and also loved Gigantic back in the day I personally thing you hit the nail on the head. I think for the most part Paladins fans would do some well by taking a break now and then and chilling on OW for something slightly different but not too diferent and visa versa with Overwatch fans.

i agree with you but i still cant stop getting really annoyed at him for his lack of understanding of pro OW play as I personally play a lot of competitive OW and am a leader of masters OW team. Him saying that OW of all games primarily takes mechanics shows that he really never has experienced how it is to play OW in a real team environment.
I enjoyed OW for it's polish, character interactions and graphics. But the hero switching and lack of customization turned me off. Also it's not fun to get stunned by McCree and then killed immediately. Or frozen by Mei and then shattered (maybe i just didnt get how she works)
TheAppleJhon I agree with you but i still can’t stop getting really annoyed at the fact that a game’s competitive scene is not what the game should be review on. A game is not good if it takes super high skill play to begin to address properly in a review. He also is not a Paladins pro or fully understands the top masters level of play for Paladins equivalent to the OW masters level of play you’re talking about. Paladins as a base game has more to offer and that’s what it comes down to.
People wonder how he takes so long, but h Th en you realize that for both games, he talks like hes a member of the community and uses proper jargon. He doesn’t just play the games to review them, he learns everything he can about them.

When gigantic came out it looked so cool to me and unique and wanted to give it a go. Unfortunately, my computer wasn’t exactly state of the art so I couldn’t run it like I wanted to. Unlike the other people, I didn’t bitch about it because I blame it on me. Now that Ik what the company and game have gone through I feel bad and disappointed I couldn’t play it and that it couldn’t become the next game due to issues.
It died because of the changes they were forced to make between Beta and full release. They set up the beta for bug fixes and final design changes. A bunch of Overwatch players got Beta keys and flooded the forums with "suggestions" which the dev team took to heart and quickly made changes to impliment a fix for all the complaints they got. By release they had made it impossible to do anything without a meta team while every other character was useless. Assassins did no damage and healers were nuking. By the time the dev team realized they were effectively sabotaged it was too late and their player base was gone. Gigantic quietly died a few months later. When people ask me why Overwatch should die I point them to this string of disaster the players caused. Some of the complaints made on the forums were from people who never even played the game, up voting posts like "ranged characters do too much damage my tank character can't kill them." They knew what they were doing.
I guess since motiga is now "dead" I can disclose what little information I have from my time under NDA.
The game truly did have some great ideas behind it. I loved the idea completely but I need to state their business strategy was terrible. The game was originally more of a Moba before it was really a hero shooter. Those elements if I remember correctly were focused on later. Most of the publicity it got was centered around the Moba crowd near the start, which sort of wrote it off. This was made worse by it's requirements, which while not insane lets be honest, with the games target audience being what it was at the time, cut off an entire astronomical unit of their potential playerbase. Compound this with the niche already having two large competitors in Smite and Paragon, one of which had low enough requirements to grab up most of the players in the target audience and the other subsequently suffered a shutdown.
After the release of OW and Paladins the game now had a niche whose players could actually play it... and those players had one of the biggest gaming releases of all time in OW. All this while Gigantic struggled to change their marketing strategy.
I'll admit I didn't spend too much time around Gigantic but I think I can say this for certain. The game was a marketing nightmare through all stages of its existence. I'm pretty sure everything that could've gone wrong went wrong and the saddest part is that it was not for lack of a dedicated and truly inspirational dev team, it was just the market.

Marketing be the killer. I would have played the hell out of that game if I knew it existed.
Rob DC im gonna be 100% honest, when i first Saw this game it was a moba, which i hate, so i wrote it completly OFF, but seeing it now and what it turned out to be... im really disapointed in myself for not looking more into it.
I think their first problem was not releasing it for steam and other operating systems because microsoft was forcing the windows shop really hard. But i understand that they had to due to needing funding to develop.

Honestly, from someone who has over 3-4 k hours in Paladins and around 100 hours in ow give or take, I'd say this video provides the best comparison between two said games. Whenever certain champions are played in lanes they're not "designed" to be in, or items are bought by champions they are not "designed" for, Riot has a spasm and does everything it can to "readjust" and kill the meta.
Example: Sona top was axed.
However, I cannot understand how Riot approaches new champions. Seraphine is essentially Sona 2.0 and she does not suffer the anti-sololane nerfs Sona went through, effectively making Seraphine a replacement for Sona, better than her in almost every way.
Meta is also an ever evolving thing, if lee top was just the go to forever, the game would be boring and stale, but just like how players at the recent MSI started aggressively invading rumble, just because a champ WAS top pick / super powerful doesn't mean that there aren't methods to counter the pick either.
Yes, some champs get nerfed, some get buffed, it's not just flinging darts at a board.
Riot isn't perfect either, 'better nerf irelia' was a meme for years for good reason.
But the best way to handle the meta is to think about who/how to counter whoever is popular right now, because that person may just be the next best pick

You know, on the topic of the "heroic comeback" and Warframe, TotalBiscuit (RIP), who Digital Extremes basically say saved Warframe, actually planned to stream and play Gigantic a bit, but couldn't because of various complications with his cancer. Makes me wonder how things might've changed had he made a proper video of it. Granted, this was when his influence was... Far less than it used to be, but I imagine a WTF Is video from him (or another big thing from another big TH-cam person like Angry Joe) could definitely have helped that game get off the ground.
Somebody fund a relaunch for Gigantic on Switch. A kickstarter or something.
Relaunch on PC without UWP should be pretty cheap and make it already accessible to more people than before. I think Switch and other systems is something one might strive towards from there. Just the switch would be needlessly limiting the customer base. Need to harness Korean and Chinese market foremost for success, means a shitty old PC with Windows 7 and newer rather than 10 exclusively is your ideal target.

Part of Gigantic's early problems was being exclusive to Windows 10 operating systems. The last thing Gigantic would ever need is more exclusivity to clip its wings.

So for those who haven't heard Project: Stamina is a spiritual successor to Gigantic that is in development. I'm not sure if any of the minds from Motiga are in on the project but it might be something worth checking out!

@Marcelgit And the reason for that is that the project is on hold because some of the people working on the project was/were(?) exposed to some allegations iirc. It will most likely never appear again, considering how it was organized and how the people working on it were basically doing it for free.

Shammy, I’ve never heard or seen anything about gigantic before, but just from this review I am ashamed of how the gaming industry has changed from people being open to try games, to people instantly dismissing them. The passion of the developers, and the emotion in your voice when you said that it was shut down are enough to make me regret not finding this game sooner.
If given a shot, this could have been THE hero “shooter”, but no one gave it a chance...

Paladins didnt suffer solely because people called it an Overwatch clone. Hell. I'd even bet money that wasnt the main reason. The main reason was due to how much more polished Overwatch looks (because this helps with marketing) and also just general marketing.
I for one never thought badly about Paladins, I had just already bought Overwatch and wasnt about to play a 2nd game in the same vein while I was still having fun with the first game.
I'm a huge fighting game player, but I only buy maybe one fighting game every two years or so. I dont buy them all, and it isnt because I think the fighting games I dont buy are just bad, or clones.
Paladins suffered mostly from being dealt a shit hand of being similar enough to Overwatch, and released closely enough. It's not because people thought of it as a clone.

My favorite example is MxM. Now, the game didn't die because of its low player base... In fact, the developers drove them away due to how the game handled the F2P parts of the game and poor server management. But the game still had a mostly soft launch. And that's pretty much true with MOST mobas released after the wake of League and Dota2. Why switch to a new one if I have others? I personally had more fun with MxM than I ever had with League... But nobody gave it the chance to show NCSoft that it was worth investing better resources into, make it better... And it was a sad story to experience.
I wouldn't say shooter tho. Imo opinion gigantic looks more like a 3d moba not a hero shooter. That's why I think it didn't attract shooter audiences

I dont care for 1st person shooters, and I've definitely never cared for team based hero multiplayer like LoL, but I gave overwatch a shot even though everything about it told me I wouldnt like it, but I did like it. Dont tell me it's because people dont want to give games a chance because that's not a measurable argument. I've never even heard of gigantic until now, why? Because their marketing sucked.

@@Phurzt That's mostly fair, but Gigantic is a pretty specific example of a project that went south for many reasons. Games like Hyper Universe, MxM, and even to some extent Battleborn are the main games I'm talking about. Which I should have made more clear since the OP is about Gigantic.

I was really sad when I learned gigantic was shutting down. I loved playing it when it came out because it honestly is the most enjoyable team game i've played. period. i didnt follow it much after the initial announcement but i remembered it later when it came out. i played it mainly on xbox and when ever i got fed up with overwatch or any other game i played that and enjoyed myself. only reason i didn't play that exclusively was because of the player count. hearing what the dev team did just makes me even more sad its gone.

Just want to mention to any Overwatch people who are tempted to try out Paladins because of this, up until Dec 15 the game is letting you get a free DLC on Steam that gives you 4 extra champions to try out on top of the default characters.So if you search up Paladins Starters pack after getting the game you get Dredge, Furia, Koga, and Khan along with their voice packs and skin recolors for free and straight away. So that gives you basically 11 free default champions rather than 5

The only way someone saves Gigantic is, as Shammy stated, if the community rebuilds it from the ground up. With games like Giagantic, its going to be *extremely* hard for big shot companies to pick this up again since it failed the first time. So if you want Gigantic back, either start working on solutions or hope someone else does if for you.

This game deserved to be in more consoles, it even seemed like a perfect fit for Nintendo being mostly fantasy and cartoony violence as well as colorfull all around, it could've been the Nintendo's MOBA no problem

For anyone still watching this in 2020, Paladins has gone through quite a few changes:
-Khan's ultimate now requires direct aim over an enemy. You can now feel erect first when using it.
-You can now buy more than 1 item from any of the 4 categories in the item shop, allowing the player even more options. Item limit is still 4.
-There are now only 3 talents per champion.
-Viktor's Firefight is gone, and Gunnary (15% more damage when aiming down sights) has been replaced with Burst Mode [Switch your rifle to Three-Shot-Burst mode, increasing your effective range and firing three 220-damage shots every 0.4s.]
-Lian's ultimate no longer grants her full invulnerability while casting, replaced with damage reduction.
