Us Metalheads hated Journey in the 80's, mainly because they were adored by the girls. I've learned in the past 40 years that they were quite the band, very talented and sometimes they rocked as heavy as the heavier bands we listened to in the 80's like AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Steve Perry had one hell of a voice and Neil Schon is a very good guitarist. Good reaction.

Well it is time you got acquainted with the Progressive/Heavy Metal Journey of their first 3 albums before Perry showed up. It is incredible instrumentational stuff. Try "Of A Lifetime" or "Look Into The Future" first and go from there...

Maggie Renee, Greg Rolle, the keyboardist for Journey was the keyboard player and vocalist for Santana between 1966-72. It's Rolle's voice you hear on Santana's version of "Black Magic Woman," and many other Santana hits, and Rolle was present for Santana's epic version of "Soul Sacrifice" performed at Woodstck in 1969.
Greg wasn't thrilled with the musical focus after Steve Perry joined Journey. Ansley Dunbar (drums) was the first to leave the group.. Rolle was second
A Hammond B-3, sometimes with a Leslie cabinet, is heard on many hit songs from the 60's, 70's and 80's and played by bands including Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Yes, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen and on and on. Of course it was a staple in Gospel music and also used to provide background music and sound effects in the live radio days. Nothing can beat it.
in high school Journey was everywhere. Between the music and posters of the band, and of Steve Perry the girls had in their bedrooms it got to be a bit overwhelming. One of my best older friends could have passed as Steve's brother and would get followed when out in public. Their song "Faithfully" is a song that you really must listen to.
Great song, great album, great band. Had "Departure", and few other Journey albums, saw them twice, '82 & '83. My fondest memory is in "Caddyshack" when Rodney Dangerfield turns on the stereo in his humongous golf bag and say "Let's Dance".
We call Steve the voice ! You should have a look at Mother Father Sister Brother . Steve said it is the hardest song he has sung , the whole song is in his high register and that it's one of their songs that he doesn't particularly like singing ! To me it's one of their best !!!
If you wanna hear an incredible song that not only showcases Steve's voice, but is also a tribute to 60s and 60s music, do the Raised on Radio, title track to an album. The lyrics are almost exclusively song titles and is as nostalgic and as rocking as it gets
That jukebox had one of their most criminally underrated songs EVAH! "Walks Like A Lady" is a jazzy, funky masterpiece and one of my faves. Should definitely give it a listen! ✌😎
Neal Schon also played with Santana prior to forming Journey with Gregg Rolle. Rolle was lead vocalist until Perry joined. Infinity was the first album featuring Perry as lead vocalist alongside Rolle. The song Lights showcases both vocalists with Rolle singing the verses and Perry singing the chorus. Lights is my all time favorite Journey song and would love to see a reaction done for it.

It's my favorite song to sing with best friend. He sings Greg's part and I sing Steve's parts. Steve is the lead singer in this video. Steve is has unmistakable and distinctive tenor voice and a beautiful man to look at.

The keyboard is an organ and the “Controls” are pull stops. It is probably a Hammond B3 being the most popular with rock groups of that era. They sound awesome but are hellishly heavy and the bane of roadies the world over, hence being replaced by synth-keyboards now a days which are much lighter and more compact.

Neil Schon was also with a short lived supergroup called Hagar, Schon, Aronson, Schrieve (HSAS) and if you haven't heard them you should. Some killer guitar work by both Sammy and Neil, with Neil doing most of the leads. Amazing.

yeah, I've played on a few two-tier hammonds myself--I love how you can use the faders to pitch or bend,fade out or "echo blast" and they piano.organ/strings sound on 'em are excellent..The only problem I had with 'em is they're too dam heavy to move without a couple of guys, so I switched to the more portable Yamahs and Rolands. Comedian Rodney Dangerfireld had fun dancing to this song in "Caddyshack"..Its one of Journey's best!

According to an VH1 “Behind the Music” on the band that I saw decades ago, Rolie was unhappy with the band’s new direction after singer Perry and keyboardist Jonathan Cain joined the band, which was a jazzy jam band when it was founded in the early ‘70s, then shift to radio-friendly pop in the late ‘70s. Jam bands were big in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s (Chicago being another great jam band with a fat horn sound that shifted sharply to more pop sensibilities in the late ‘70s. Other jam bands like the Grateful Dead, though, kept doing their thing). I like both jam music and later pop stuff from these bands. There’s room at the musical table for everyone, and you really can’t blame a band for wanting to survive. Top 40 radio was exploding by 1980 when this song came out, and it’s better to compromise than die, just as the music industry had to adjust, shifting from selling 12-song albums for $15 to a buck-a-song online circa 2000 (though the quality of pop music since 2000 has deteriorated steadily, which may or may not be connected). If you're into keyboard work, check out Jon Lord on the 1972 performance video for "Highway Star," also on TH-cam. He tears up a keyboard like this one something fierce.
I found it interesting, what you said about opera singers being trained to start their vocal lines from the top. Because as an amateur singer I’ve tried that and didn’t do well. The register of my voice is quite low but I can still hit high notes. Yet I’ve done far better with starting a line near the bottom of my range and then sliding up to the top note I need to hit. Don’t know if that’s a technically incorrect way of singing, but it works for me.
My fave Journey song is Anytime, which has Gregg Rolie (Mr Serious in this vid lol) on lead vocals, and Steve Perry on backup and lead on the bridge. Ive seen several reactors react to Feeling That Way, which leads into Anytime, but almost no one does Anytime.

Gregg Row-lee. He maybe coming back with them soon. Many of us hope! He and Neil played in Santana together and left to start Journey. You can hear Gregg's vocals on most of early Santana's hit songs like Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, etc. as well as early Journey. He left them in 1980, just as they were exploding.

Gregg Rollie was the original keyboard player. He didn’t care much for Perry at the time, according to articles that I’ve read. The original Frontman, Robert Fleischman and Gregg had a closer connection. Probably accounts for the stern look.

I was about to say--you don't know a Hammond organ? Greg Rolie was on a bunch of great songs playing it, first when he was with Santana, then of course with his own group, which was Journey. If you want to hear a really good solo from him on the Hammond, look for the long version of Santana performing Soul Survivor at Woodstock. You don't want the HD version. Look for the one that's super long. The "serious" guy was Greg Rolie, and it's not a surprise that he wasn't as perky as everyone else. He was the orginal vocalist, but kept getting pushed out by this incredible singer they brought on for their fourth album infinity. Plus, Journey didn't really get popular until Steve Perry came along, and that was anotehr sore point for him. Mr Rolie would leave the group not long after this album came out.

I think this might be my favorite song from when I was in college marching band. It was so easy as a drumline but made the crowd go nuts.

I found it interesting, what you said about opera singers being trained to start their vocal lines from the top. Because as an amateur singer I’ve tried that and didn’t do well. The register of my voice is quite low but I can still hit high notes. Yet I’ve done far better with starting a line near the bottom of my range and then sliding up to the top note I need to hit. Don’t know if that’s a technically incorrect way of singing, but it works for me.
My fave Journey song is Anytime, which has Gregg Rolie (Mr Serious in this vid lol) on lead vocals, and Steve Perry on backup and lead on the bridge. Ive seen several reactors react to Feeling That Way, which leads into Anytime, but almost no one does Anytime.

Gregg Row-lee. He maybe coming back with them soon. Many of us hope! He and Neil played in Santana together and left to start Journey. You can hear Gregg's vocals on most of early Santana's hit songs like Black Magic Woman, Evil Ways, etc. as well as early Journey. He left them in 1980, just as they were exploding.

Gregg made 3 fantastic albums with SP in the band. Arguably the best Journey albums. But Gregg used to be the lead singer prior to SP's arrival.

Gregg Rollie was the original keyboard player. He didn’t care much for Perry at the time, according to articles that I’ve read. The original Frontman, Robert Fleischman and Gregg had a closer connection. Probably accounts for the stern look.

Maggie..you should check out Steve Perry's Oh Sherrie.His voice is just as good as a solo artist as he is with Journey.
I was about to say--you don't know a Hammond organ? Greg Rolie was on a bunch of great songs playing it, first when he was with Santana, then of course with his own group, which was Journey. If you want to hear a really good solo from him on the Hammond, look for the long version of Santana performing Soul Survivor at Woodstock. You don't want the HD version. Look for the one that's super long.
The "serious" guy was Greg Rolie, and it's not a surprise that he wasn't as perky as everyone else. He was the orginal vocalist, but kept getting pushed out by this incredible singer they brought on for their fourth album infinity. Plus, Journey didn't really get popular until Steve Perry came along, and that was anotehr sore point for him. Mr Rolie would leave the group not long after this album came out.
