One thing they left out which was in the book, and I wish they had included it. After Paul killed Jamis in the book, Jessica confronts him, and asks how he likes being a murderer. At this Paul bursts into tears in remorse, and the Fremen are astonished that he sheds water for the dead.

1984 version did this...and though it was decent, I cringed at the delivery of the line. No, some things are rather better off staying in the book than in film because it would've felt too theatrical seeing that. I'm pretty sure by now that internally, Paul had been very much conflicted inside killing him.

@@kayhong5390 the first hundred pages maybe, but the book pulls you in and it's a page turner all the way through. The book is also much more intricate than the movie. Adapting it to film has been deemed almost impossible, but this latest adaptation is no doubt the best so far. It is IMHO the best science fiction novel ever written. I am glad a second movie has been announced, because things are just getting started!
I wish they’d included the tension and mistrust between Thufir and Jessica.
Jamis chose his fate. He didn’t have to duel Paul, in fact Stilgar asked him to leave him be.
Paul saw a future where Jamis was his friend, and he saw one where Chani killed him. These were all possible futures, but the future is always in flux.
None of those possible futures were in the book. They were created by the director and screenwriter for their own cinematic reasons. They weren't part of Frank Herbert's lore.

@@kkjhn41 That's true, but also arguing on bad faith. Because he can see many futures, there's actually no reason why he couldn't see Chani killing him if he attacks her friends. It's not like Frank actually elaborates on the many futures that Paul sees. He implies that there is a ton of them. She did find him in the rocks in the book, so her attack is entirely plausible. Regardless, that being part of the movie is just to make it obvious for the viewers that he sees POSSIBLE futures, not 'the future'. Because getting a Star Wars/Marvel/Nolan type exposition dump is just bad film making overall. It's there so people can infer what's going on if they pay attention.
I have no idea what you are responding to since my comment was all about the movie's construct of Jamis being a mentor to Paul and nothing to do with people thinking that the movie shows a possible future where Chani kills Paul. I never mentioned Chani so I have no idea what you think you are commenting on. The movie gives Jamis a role he never had in the book including his voice over during the Thropter escape into the storm that does not take place in the book. The business about Jamis being a friend and mentor to Paul changes his role in the story from the one Frank Herbert assigned him in the book and changes the dynamic of the knife fight and it's result from what happens in the book. If they begin part 2 with Paul giving water to the dead it has completely changed the reason he did so from his guilt at having killed someone to his having empathy for the possible friend of his vision. They also cut out the crucial result of the knife fight where his mother scorned him for having killed someone and feeling good about it which shocked him into a higher consciousness that made him feel remorse rather than become a casual killer.

The reaction of Shadout Mapes is difficult to understand without context. Jessica knows she is being tested. When Mapes asks the meaning of the knife, Jessica begins to translate the Chakobsa word for knife, "A Maker of Death." When she says "Maker," Mapes freaks out because "the Maker" is also the term for the giant sandworms. The knife is a tooth of the sandworms, but no one but the Fremen call it "the Maker."
Let alone that anyone with a title of 'well-dipper' on a desert planet is likely to be very important

Paul's visions are not the future...they show him EVERY possible future depending on people's decisions.
Except those futures containing people who he can't see, like Count Fenring. Or his own death?

basically it's like waves and he is almost drowning in the waters, and he can only see possible futures... so a very narrow perspective, in the ways of foreseeing the future.

Paul didn't necessarily need to kill anyone to be accepted. Jamis's challenge is what set those events in motion.
Leaders only become leaders by killing the present sietch leader. Paul could not be seen as worthy as a leader without proving himself. In the book he kills multiple challengers until he discovers that Chani and other women of his family have been killing challengers because they did not think they were important enough for him to waste his time on them. Then when it became obvious that Paul was the greatest fighter among them the people began to grumble about when he was going to fight Stilgar and take total control of the tribes. Paul then uses both reason and his position as the fighter none could stand against to end the Fremen tradition of choosing a leader through combat. It was necessary to have first proved himself in the traditional way which included killing Jamis when he invoked the amtal rule for testing strangers. He definitely had to kill at first to be accepted and to later be in a position to end the tradition.

@@unevenstreets1182 well, the story was kinda faded and sometimes I felt that some scenes were bit forced (for example son/mom crying after escape or final fight buid up...) but over all other aspects of movie like audio/visual or acting nicely harmonized aspects that were lacking...
By killing Jamis, Paul killed himself as well in a symbolic way, to become the Messiah. That is why "Paul Atreides must die for Kwisach Haderach to rise". And Jamis did show him the "ways of the desert", in a way. Nobody said they will be friends.

13:21 Duncan Idaho is the Swordmaster of the House. Swordmasters are like knights they like the mentats are trained at a special school. Having one in service to your house is a honor and Duncan Idaho is considered one of the best the school ever turned out. Swordmasters were developed to fight toe to toe against the machine killbots in the war against AI, they are considered the best fighters in the empire.
The "Old Man" line by Paul when the spice first hits him is two things: he sensed Gurneys approach despite not being able to hear his footsteps on the sand and the coming of the worm. The sandworms were referenced as "Old Man" in the novels.

If I remember correctly Shai-hulud means 'Old Man of the Desert'.
Shai-Hulud are also called "Old Father Time" in the books.
In the vision Jamis tells Paul that he would teach him the ways of the desert and in a way he did. He showed him what you need to become a part of the Fremen and eventually their leader. Also that Arrakis is cruel and is not meant for people who are not willing to kill and to fight their hardest to survive.

I've read all six of the books dozens of times. This is only the first half of the first story. Well done. In addition to being trained by Duncan and Gurney, Paul has been learning the advanced martial arts used by the Bene Gesserit. That is why Jamis, despite being a skilled knife fighter, was an easy mark for Paul.
I think the way they portrayed the motives of the Bene Gesserit and their perspective in the power dynamic, may allow this movie franchise may be able to make Dune Messiah into a film.
Paul also had a disadvantage that he had been shield-trained. Paul had been trained to slow his blade to penetrate shields, and almost ignore fast attacks because his shield would protect him. If Jamis had been able to recognize that, Paul likely would have died.
Yup, though unproven, Paul is likely the most dangerous fighter in the Known Universe. Of course he gets even better when he learns the Fremen fighting style and mixes it in.
Also, it makes me laugh when Stilgar says "the woman is untrained" - buddy, that's rhe most trained woman you'll ever find...
Dr. Yue actually didn’t think the Harkonnens would uphold their end of the deal. He knew in all probability Wanna was already dead, but his hatred of the Baron broke his Imperial Conditioning against harming life by making him wish his death for what they did to his wife. His whole goal was to kill the baron with that poison, not getting his wife back through that betrayal, he knew that would be the only way he could possibly ever exact his revenge against him. That’s why he goes out of his way to help Paul escape and make sure the Atreides line continues, as a final fuck you to the harkonnens. Still not a good dude but a bit more nuanced than “I want to get my wife back”. The book does a better job showing this but I understand there are time limitations and you can’t really show internal dialogue in movies.

I think revenge was his second goal. First was to be sure that Wanna is dead and not tortured any more. This was the only way.

The Fremen didn't make Paul fight Jamis to join their tribe, or even go with them. Jamis challenged Jessica for leadership, because she beat the current leader Stilgar in single combat moments before. Paul stepped in as her champion to fight in her stead.
Jamis lasted a good 90 seconds longer than if Jessica had faced him herself. She's even deadlier than Paul at that point in the story!
The shields onky work on hi speed attacks. Slow attacks can pass through.

Depends on calibration, actually. In theory, you can set a shield to max but that would leave you in a vacuum and kill you. Shields must be calibrated to stop anything going past a certain speed, but must also account for things like atmosphere, airflow, particles, bacteria, your actual movements, etc. So the most common calibrations allow for relatively normal movement (with a slight, but noticeable delay) that will "protect" you from ballistic - or any high-speed misile - weapon, but will still permit hand to hand combat.
In fact, shields do not really protect so much as deter the use of ballistic weapons as shooting a shield basically causes a mini nuclear explosion.
I haven't read the books, so I don't know if this happened the same way, or if I'm 100% on the motivations of the challenge and fight, but my understanding is that Jessica beat Stilgar, their group's leader, in combat and spared his life. Jamis saw this as evidence Stilgar wasn't fit to lead and challenged Jessica to defend her position. Paul came forth as her champion to fight Jamis. Paul proved he could beat Jamis without killing him, but Jamis took that as an insult since he could not yield and had to fight to the death. Jamis instigated the challenge, so Paul killing him was acceptable to the Fremen.

I really appreciated the acting choices in that fight. Jamis yelling at Paul in anger for not simply killing him directly. He felt dishonored that Paul took not just one, but *three* killing moves and did not finish the fight.
This scene was absolutely perfect.
You are totally correct in everything you said. The challenge was for leadership of the tribe. Only the strong can survive in the desert.
It says something about how scared the baron was of Leto that despite having him naked and paralyzed, completely under his power he still activated a shield before leaning closer.
The Fremen are my favourite part of the book. They may seem brutal to outsiders but that is only because of the sheer brutality of the desert. Only the strong can survive there. But within their own tribe the Fremen are incredibly caring and loving, Sharing a connection through the Spice that bonds them closer then any family. They are deeply saddened by the death of Jamis but because Paul beat him in combat he proves that he is worthy of taking Jamis's place in the tribe. To the point where he essentially takes Jamis's whole life. He inherits his home, his possessions and even his wife and children. This is the point where Paul stops being the child Paul and truly becomes Muadib. And that's what the visions are about. He doesn't actually die. but his childhood does. And he becomes a man. If you enjoyed this movie I highly recommend the book. As amazing as this movie is (Abd it truly is a visual and story telling master piece) it is a mere shadow of what the book is in every way. I have never read a book as layered and nuanced as Dune before or since. It is a metaphor for the current human condition and a warning against blindly following charismatic leaders. And if you ask me should be essential reading at school. Dune really did change my life and perspective on the the society we live in. And the litany against fear is the motto for how I choose to live my life. I'm so happy this film is bringing more people into the Dune fandom. This is a series of novels that don't get nearly enough love.

My interpretation of Gurney is that he's half guard dog, half rescue animal. Leto rescued him from life as a Harkonnen slave, gave him respect, dignity, a position of honor and trusted him with his only son. They could have emphasized his backstory a bit, but in the end I loved what they did with Gurney. (Except in the books he's basically described as the ugliest man alive.) The same cannot be said about how it treats Dr Yueh. They barely used him, therefore his betrayal carried no weight.
We saw that Yueh was trusted and that he cared enough about Paul that he warned him about his own mother...
perhaps a directors cut will add some more scenes with him which would help a lot
@@jgmiller804 The scene of Yueh and Jessica talking was filmed (the one from the book). Maybe we will see it in blu-ray release together with other cut-outs.
I have seen in a lot of these reactions people been shocked by Yue's betray, like they really cared and didnt saw it coming

One of the missing scene is when a lazgun hits a shield, they explode in a mini-nuclear like explosion. This is why Duncan Idaho locked himself outside of the room. He was attempting to delay/stop the Sardaukar from using the lazgun. As long as shields are active, it's too dangerous to use the lazgun. Even when Duncan was struck down, he raised up finished the lazgun crew. Assumingly destroying the lazgun itself. Giving Lady Jessica and Paul time to escape.
I don't know that might have been taken out of the movies atleast. How shields function in the movies are different than the book. I wouldn't be surprised if they just took that out.

@@RayMcElroy50 the ones that are "bad" are mostly just his team and not really him too. But he definitely has better and poorer work. I think Dune is some of his best stuff.
34:16 In later books of the Dune series, you can learn the origin of Duncan Idaho. He was a simple stable boy who tended to the bulls that Duke Paulus Atreides used to fight. When Paulus died in the arena, at 15 his son Leto became Duke and immediately outlawed bullfighting.
Duncan asked Leto what would become of him since there was no more bulls to tend. At this point, young Duke Leto sort of adopted Duncan and changed the course of his life. Instead of becoming a stable hand, Duncan became a trusted and skillful soldier in the Atreides army. Leto even sent Duncan to the Ginaz school to become a sword master.
As Leto treated Duncan like a younger brother, Duncan would so the same for Paul. All of the advisors in Leto’s inner circle were fiercely loyal to him and his family and loved them. As we can see here only death could stop Duncan from protecting them.
It would be interesting to see a French translation of this because "the little death" translates to "le petite mort" and is used in French to describe an orgasm. "Fear is the little death" gets a very different meaning then 🤣

Frank Herbert was well-read after all; one on the desert ecology of California (Dr. Kyne's station), one on the Austro-Hungarian Empire (the Landsrat and Emperor), one on the origins of Islam (much of the story and Paul), and most obviously the 'John Carter of Mars' series of pulp magazines.
@@stevetheduck1425 I think it was more German Empire than the Austrian Empire. Because the German Empire had great houses who ruled the princely state and the rulers of the Prussian state were elected Emperor.
I LOVE how Villeneuve shows Paul's visions not as seeing into the future, but seeing many possible futures.

As few others mentioned before, the shield protects from high speed projectiles. The only thing that can pass through is either a slow moving blade (hence why everyone fights with them) or a specially designed projectile that sort of slowly drills through the shield.
A point of interest: the old men whose eyes turn weird few times is called a mentat: a human computer. In this time AI or any sort of thinking machine is illegal. In the novel, there was a war against a race of machines spawned by AI (it most likely isn't covered in the movie so it's not really a spoiler, as it wasn't touched upon in the 1974 version either), after which AI was forbidden.
Yeah I saw some purists complain that the films made some changes, such as weakening the shields overall (sufficient kinetic energy will knock them out as seen with the coptor) along with showing technological workarounds. But I actually like this better as such an advanced society would of course come up with workarounds beyond just a "slow blade" plus the books descriptions of them was almost just a handwave. The movies show much more realistic depiction of personal shielding.
22:57 Fight choreography is always hard, but notice that when they fight with shields they have to launch their attacks quickly but slow down as they're about to make contact so they will penetrate the shields. That takes great control and coordination to do without looking ridiculous.
You also have cases where a defender will move towards an attack to make the impact speed high enough that the shield will trigger

Well it was apparently that specifically that forced them to change aspects of the shields. Such as levels of kinetic energy passing through and even overcoming them with sufficient force such as seen on the copter. It was partially do to the fact its near impossible to get mass fight scenes without showing levels of kinetic energy transfer. Plus to make the shields more consistent.

You are remembering Stellan Skarsgard, who plays Baron Harkonnen, from the HBO series "Chernobyl".
Paul sees different, even contradictory, events in his visions because the future is always changing.
In one possible future he is friends with Jamis. In another he is killed by Chani.
The difficulty is in trying to avoid the worst future by the choices you make.
If any of you get the motivation to read not just Frank Herbert's "Dune" but the five other "Dune" books he wrote, a lot of those visions Paul was lamenting about in the stilltent ("...there will be a holy war..." "...legions will celebrate at the skull of my father...") wind up happening or get referenced in those later books.

Late to the party but if not already answered- the floating guy “Baron” is Stellan Skarsgård.. he’s played in Chernobyl, Thor, and (my personal fav) Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. His son Bill played Pennywise in the horror films ‘It’ and oldest son Alexander played in Tarzan, True Blood and Big Little Lies. Talented family to say the least.
I know him the best from the Mamma Mia films

@@tacitus5665 Yeah that was Pardot, Liet was a rider. His* death was also much different in the book. He was taken by the Sardaukar in the cave and gave his story as being forced to act by the Atreides, he was under official imperial protection still and it was the Baron that ordered him killed, beaten and then dropped in the desert like he had with Paul/Jessica. He starts hallucinating, hearing one of his father's lectures on ecology as a pre-spice mass erupts directly underneath him.

actually the thing on their noses is for the suit to catch the water vapor from the breath and turn it into drinking water. Since moisture is very precious on the desert everything that can produce moisture must be captured.
People sometimes forget how much water is lost simply through breathing, especially in very dry air, like a desert.
I've read all the books. and the first films seen from 1984. also the miniseries. but what Denis Villeneuve has created here is something big. now unfortunately waiting for part 2. but it will be fantastic.

The actor who plays the Baron was the scientist in Avengers, and Bill's father in Pirates of the Carribean.

The bald headed slave girl had actually had her fingers removed and replaced with robotic ones. The Harkonnen in the film appear to lean more sadistic rather than sexual (in the books the Baron was gay and an implied pederast, and the Harkonnen enslave women and force them into slavery). So, the scene implies that the film Harkonnen love to torture and "disassemble" people. I can see why they changed them from the books, considering social norms have changed in the past 60 years.

I love the quip that the Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam says about Paul having more than one birthright. He has many birthrights, not just because of his Atreides bloodline, but because of Jessica's father and mother. 😄
You seem confused by Paul's vision of Chani killing him. Dreams are symbolic. In his dream, Chani symbolically represents the death of his old life and the birth of his new life and new self among the Fremen.
Anyone would be confused by it because there's no indication of when it would happen. If you're spelling things out exactly as they're meant to be seen, this feels more like a spoiler instead of letting us figure out when this future is passed.
Yes, symbolism avoids telegraphing events and adds more meaning to them when they actually come to pass. Even Paul doesn't know what it means beforehand. But probably will understand it better in hindsight. And we viewers can hopefully put it together after watching too.
The dreams that are clear are dreams that will happen. The ones that are orange and filtered are potential futures. Paul saw possible futures of death at the hands of Chani, but friendship with Jamis.
They guy in the bath and silence is Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig from Thor (the Professor drinking with Thor in the bar) and the Avengers (the Tesseract Scientist Loki captured) and the commander of the other Russian sub in Hunt For Red October (We're going to go and kill a friend).
I'm glad to see you liked the movie too! The thumpers in the movie draw the worms to the location of the device, just like the summoning sand does (that's what Kynes used at her death and Paul stepped in at the cliff sequence). The duel between Paul and Jamis was one of my favorite sequences of the entire movie because it proves what Paul was experienceing in the visions were different outcomes of future scenarios. A alternate timeline where Jamis was his friend and trained him to live in the deserts of Arrackis, and another with Chani killing him, though I think that was a reference of the "Holy War" that's to come when the other houses realize The Emperor teamed up with the Harrkonans to have the Atreides wiped out. Even the scenes with him in battle on Arrakis and back on Caladan were of his future self (one of many). Loved your reactions, you got another sub!
I'm pretty sure that the spider creature is actually genetically mutated human. In the Dune universe, there are a group of people called the Tleilaxu. They are masters at genetic manipulation. One of the things they make are "sligs", a cross between slugs and pigs, that have very tasty meat. In the novels, the Harkonnens enjoy degrading other people and making them suffer. A genetically mutated human pet is exactly the kind of toy they would enjoy.

Something no movie touches is that Dr Kynes is Chani's parent.
I dont hink he needed to kill they guy to be accepted into the clan. The guy challenged his mother and asked "who is her champion". At that point Paul had to kill him because of the challenge, not to get accepted. Tho I am sure showing them he is strong and that he will abide by their customs doesn't hurt in him being accepted.
Paul did not mess up by stomping on the drum sand a couple times. He had already notice they made a thumping noise. That is why he stopped and pointed out they were on "drum sand". It was already too late and the worm heard them. Him stomping on it was just to show his mom.
The shields protect based on speed "the slow blade penatrates the shield". That is how they work. Also, that is why the hunter seeker stopped in front of Paul's face. Either it is designed to do that or the pilot thought there was a shield. Either way it slowed down because it was trying to penatrate his shield (which he didn't have on).
The shields Only protect against fast attacks, slow attacks go through.

Kynes isnt trying to distract that worm with her thumper. She has retractable grappling hooks, so she's drawing it so she can ride it. Completely different to Kynes' fate in the book but nevermind.

The body shields stop fast moving objects, but not slow moving objects, this is why they use swords etc for fighting and not guns and other projectile weapons

Stilgar was the leader and he decided that Paul and the mother can come with them but that fight happened cause that fremen didn't wanted Paul and the mother, he didn't believe that Paul was the chosen one, so he challenged the mother to a fight but for some fremen rule she couldn't fight so he had to chose a champion to fight for her and that champion had to be Paul.
The movie does a poor job of explaining the limitations of the shields worn in the film which leaves people confused about their actual purpose and limitations.
In the books the movie is based on, the shields stop anything moving quickly such as a bullet, a laser (which would actually cause a huge explosion in the books), or even a knife stab that is moving too fast. However, a knife/sword moving slower can penetrate the shields, explaining why so many people are armed with edged weapons so far in the future instead of more technological weapons. This is also why the dart which paralyzed the Duke slowed down as it eased its way through his shield to drug him. My wife never read the books and was also confused by this when we saw the movie.
It is a kinetic shield. Anything moving fast is stopped something moving slow can penetrate. The little cute desert mouse is a muad' deb, teacher of children. Later in the timeline, Paul selects Muad' Deb as his Freeman name. Paul is The One, and he does see the future, but the future isn't set in stone. It changes with the decisions you make. Paul doesn't really want the power, but he has no choice but to be what he was born. I know it really isn't something you girls are interested in, but you should read at lease the first Dune book. There is so much in the movie you don't notice unless you have the background knowledge. Don't bother watching the first Dune movie. It wasn't very good while this one was epic. Loved your reaction to your introduction to Dune.
They'll likely go into Paul's abilities in the next movie, but Paul is hearing his female ancestors. Bene Gesserit Reverend Mothers have access to this "Other Memory" and it's indicated that Paul's unique heritage is allowing him to acquire their abilities. He has limited prescience and a limited access to guidance from his ancestors. In the book he doesn't really come into his powers until later in the story. I think it made sense to introduce them and the mystery early.

And then the movie had to go and do one legitimately lore-breaking dumb thing and have the Harks shoot one at Duncan's 'thopter seconds after we see his shield blocking a missile.
The shields protect against fast attacks. That's why there's not much for guns, and they use blades. Slow penetrates the shield. So what projectiles there are are designed to slow down to penetrate the shields. That's why everything that penetrates the shields is slower. They have a harder time showing this with the sword fights, but in the books it's explained that they slow their blades just as they get to shield so that it penetrates.
Spice allows some premonitions, or the ability to see things through time and space. Paul is different in that he is part of a breeding program from the Bene Gesserit. If he becomes the Kwisat Hedirach(sp?), then he can unlock the memories of his ancestors, and in the process becomes a supreme human with prescient ability. The spice is unlocking this ability within him. He's not Fremen, he's just the product of centuries of breeding towards a goal.
They weren't fighting to accept Paul to the clan. The guy was challenging Stilgar's ability, and the need of new people. They're a drain on the clan's resources. He challenged Paul to a duel to the death. There was only one ending to it. His death, or Paul's death.
The worms are naturally attracted to rhythmic sounds. It's how they find prey to eat. The Fremen just use them to ride with the hooks by separating the armor plates so that the worm won't go back under. The worms are the source of the spice.

Spice also makes one look young, the Emperor is 74 and is described as looking to be in his late 30s. Casting him will be interesting. Alia is gonna be the most challenging character to cast in film history. I don't know how they are gonna do it.
@@hypatia137 Villeneuve said his vision is 3 movies covering Paul's story. So the 3rd movie would be covering Messiah. I have read Dune multiple times due to the copy at my grandmother's house, but am just now finishing Messiah. I do plan on reading Children of Dune, and I'm guessing stuff gets crazy with Leto II. Well of course it should I guess there is like a 3,000 year time jump to God Emperor.

Keep in mind the visions are very chaotic at the beginning and are showing Paul all sorts of possible alternate futures all jumbled up with no rhyme or reason, no cause and effect. It takes him time to learn how to interpret them, doesn't really complete the process until he takes the Water Of Life and is transformed.
I saw Dune (1984) never saw the 2021 version. I'm always ready for new versions, no problem for me. And the plan was to watch it at IMAX, but we didn't.

Amazing movie. Loved your reaction to Dune. The director, Denis Villeneuve, also did Scario, which was reviewed by Larry and Elli. You should review Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival when you get a chance. Villeneuve is one of the best storytellers in film today.
The part about his visions is not all of them are true, it takes him awhile to figure out how to figure out the differant futures he sees. However, he learns something in each vision no matter if it is true or not.

Jamis is a proud, short tempered Fremen who has challenged many others before. Maybe if Paul didn't disarm or even touch him they would have shared a different path. The future stems from the present moment and Paul Muadib has the potential to steer the future if he is more awakened.
Paul is able to see all possible futures in his visions. So what he sees is not something that will happen but a possible future. The One is able to see the golden path a perfect future to lead humanity, he is also able to see the past of his bloodlines, like seeing inside his DNA and use their experience.
Jamis was his teacher in his vision just because there was a possible future where he becomes his master and teaches him the ways of the desert. What makes Paul so powerful is that he can still get all that information even if the future does not come to pass. Also the voice that tells him he must die is for the moment he kills Jamis, he will soon abandon his name and take another one. His fremen name will be Muad’Dib, it is connected to the desert mouse.

You may not know this but force fields in the Dune universe are widely used. To the point that laser guns and bullets are useless. So you'll have to use a knife or short sword in order to penetrate The shield.
Slow on the attack quick on the defense the only way to penetrate The shield is to be slow. On the attack the reason why is because force fields cannot be completely solid if they do. Then the person cannot breathe they'll essentially suffocate so they need to be weak enough to let air in.

Very good movie. IF you don't want to wait 2 (3?) years for part 2 then watch Dune 1984 by David Lynch. I'm one of the few people on this planet that think it was done well. Villenivue had 3 hours to tell 1/2 a book. Lynch had under 3 to tell the ENTIRE story. He did a very good job. (Also the sfy-fi channel adaptions were also good - again have 6 hours to tell the story). Take care ladies.

It’s a warrior culture strong at the top no mercy because on Arakis water is a scarce resource having weaklings consuming water that could keep the strong alive could weaken the Fremen overall and lead to the downfall of their society.

So glad I got to see this in the cinema when it came out. It's a visual treat (as only Denis Villeneuve can conjure up), but the sound design....oh, the sound design is top tier epic. Honestly, the chant of the Sardukar scene sent shivers up my spine, it's so visceral.
