    This could be a very interesting idea for a project/video series. Buying a car you don't particularly love and then addressing all of those things that you feel need fixing. Looking forward to seeing where this goes.

    You’ll need coding to remove “active sound” which is the system that uses the cars speakers to simulate exhaust noise. You can also code out the cold start if you don’t want it.

    As someone who regularly goes into my garage for a what should be a 5 minute job and end up running into issues with the first bolt I try to undo and whole thing ends up taking all day with me wondering if I am a useless idiot, it is somewhat satisfying to watch the struggle with the wheel nuts and realise sometimes things are just dumb and frustrating and there is nothing you can do about it but perservere.

    Phil, you’ll be able to make 19” work! I have the 400mm calipers under 19” APEX wheels, with much more clearance than the stock 437m wheels which get stones stuck between the wheel and caliper! 🤢.
    Not sure what clearance would be available from like likes of WORK etc, but looking forward to see what you do with this!

    I know you're not looking at handling yet.. But one change I made to mine was a set of front solid tension strut bushes. Such a noticeable improvement in stability and braking response. Really worth doing, it eliminates all that forward/backward slop that can be seen when trying to undo those ridiculously tight wheel bolts! In regards to sound, I just accepted my fate with the noise these make :)

    Long single 3.5 all the way to the backbox with as many straight through resonators as you can. I know its a different motor, but with the S54 in the 46 M3, the best ones I have heard are merged with as many resonators as you can fit, with a valved backbox or pretty open style backbox. Resonators take out the rasp and hollowness, but to keep it crisp and have some volume you need fairly small actual mufflers or a valved setup.

    • @Enthusiastlist
      @Enthusiastlist 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      That wouldn’t work on this engine without making a custom y pipe to join the two downpipes together & would still yield a similar sound. The reason the S55 (& conversely the S54) sound the way they do is because of the 3 to 1 exhaust manifolds, the S55 is especially bad because it has unequal length exhaust manifolds - I spoke with an M engineer regarding this & apparently they had to use that style of exhaust manifold for packaging. So long story short the only way to get a good S55 sound is by changing out the exhaust manifolds (which nobody does) or equalizing the exhaust pulses somewhere downstream. Some folks run single Midpipes on the F8x & to my ears it sounds pretty much they same as stock but louder & a bit less raspy.

    Definitely did not expect this project. Definitely feel similar about the F series so it's very interesting to see this journey cause if there is one group of people who will do everything to make it proper it's y'all. Wasn't sure how much that downpipe was actually going to do at first, but man it's pretty significant. Interesting.. a single mid-pipe will help it as the rasp and resonance is from those two singles merging too far back aswell as the unequal nature. The lack of blow off or recirculating valves means the wastegates do a bad job of releasing the pressure in turbine housing.

    I've had all M3 up to the F8x and always been a NA fan. But recently got a M4 and I love it. I also hated the sound but say what you like about the 'wiggly' exhausts the do make a massive difference to the tone from 3k onwards. I've fitted catless down pipes and the equal length mid and kept the standard back box. It's not perfect low revs on load you get a bit of rasp but once you hit the sweet spot the tone changes. It's hard to put in to words but it gets better and better as it revs out a bit like a NA. Makes thrashing it mush more pleasing. I did look into fixing the the exhaust properly and there is quite a bit of research on the net already done by others. I think the issue is the fact you've got 3 cylinders going to each down pipe and they are different lengths. Be interesting to see what you come up with.

    • @johnnygeorgopoulos4072
      @johnnygeorgopoulos4072 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I believe titanium would exaggerate the rasp tone he's already got and trying to get rid of. But you're right, different metals for piping absolutely has a large effect on sound tone, he can use titanium or Inconel here, but he would first need to address that last 70mm difference in bank sides, and then personally, I'd go with a single, large diameter midpipe, with quite a few good matching resonators. I know most people who want to fix the sound of these use the equal length midpipe, aftermarket downpipes with high flow cats(or removed), and then leave the stock back box.....so pretty much, he's making his own before the back box, instead of buying off the shelf aftermarket stuffs.

    I am going through the same thing over in the US. Bought a beautifully spec'd individual avus blue 2018 f80 competition with low mileage. Hate the sound, and lack of steering feedback, but otherwise the car is does everything else VERY well, performance wise. For the price I paid ($62k USD) I could have paid a little more and got into a G80, but I just couldn't stomach the hugeness and awful looks of the G80...From my research, adding monoballs and vorshlag camber plates does amazing things to the front end feel & feedback of the F80, for sound, there are games you can play with the exhaust, otherwise single turbo seems to be the way to go. First thing I did was ditch the 666m 20" wheels, went with 19" APEX VR-5rs. This car with properly spec'd rubber, is downright scary how deep it's capabilities are at the limit, really WAY too fast for a "street car"...

I cracked 2 17mms working on my mate's F31 and the fact that you have something that is meant for what, 800nm of torque for a GT3 centre lock and you're snapping extensions? That's just disgusting and those "mechanics" should get new jobs.

    If there is still a 70mm difference between the pipe lengths would it be an idea to merge them into one at the point at which they both bend 90 degrees towards the centre of the car? A bit difficult to describe but if they both go in parallel around a bend then one pipe would have to be longer than the other. Merging the pipes there would give an option to remove any extra length there if you think that would help.

    I can almost see single turbo conversion with equal length tubular header for this car as upcoming project 😁😁😁
    Definately with 4" oval piping all the way to the back.. (this would change the exhaust tone surely)

    I had to make a whole new merge to make the N54 sound good. Turbo - dual 3” - 4” collector - 6” cat - 4” reversed collector to dual 3” all the way back.
    Have some videos on my channel with it straight piped and with a muffler.
    Curious what you think 🥂

    I had a customer drop off a car for wheel powder coat with lugs like that, I just sent the car back to the dealer. Not one of my impacts had enough torque. It was like Jesus torqued them. I liked the jack trick.

    rb26 suffers from the same issue (altho it has much more space to solve the problem). could try looking at equal length front pipes for that and draw some inspiration. but i think going from dual front pipes into single 3.5 mid pipe would be best.

    Go single, single exhaust tube (not twins like the oem)it will change the sound the most, don’t go to big or you will keep the ‘gurgling down the drain’… sound… single 3” or 3.5” max should fine for 600-700bhp. Try mild steel, both stainless and Ti have a zing to them… just get the mild steel system cerakoted for aesthetics and keeping rust at bay.

    Had the same issue with the wheel bolts on my first car.
    Ended up snapping two sockets.

    Single exit exhaust would sound what you’re looking for.. maybe that down pipe paired up with a single all the way back will get rid of the problem for sures

    Add a resonator or two. It deepens the sound. My sons 440i (B58) was too tinny after cat delete(s) so in went a resonator and it sounded like a BMW again.

    If you ditch the idea of making a product out of the downpipe, I'd love to see custom true equal length headers with flanges/welded in to the exhaust. Mainly for the reason to see if the sound gets any better. Also a cat-back system maybe?

    Betting this thing is gonna end up either sold or with a fully custom single turbo setup.

    Seems like a dark art. Schmee150 got a custom exhaust done for his Ford GT by quiksilver i think it was in the UK and they seemed to dive really deep into the acoustics of it all. Certainly made it (another twin turbo 6 cylinder) sound better.

    if the CCB go kaput you can do the 400mm steel rotors out of the M2 Competition, it's a straigh swap with zero modification needed, other than steel rotor compliant pads.
    and as far as sound I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. Currently running downpipes with a single midpipe from Active Autowerke on the stock Comp muffler, and sounds good but the perfect sound is when they do a single turbo design honestly.
