@@darrenc8776 I said "one of the best" - my listening list is long and full of great guitar solos: 22 Acacia Avenue, The Prisoner, Wasted Years, Alexander the Great, Hallowed be Thy Name, and The Trooper, all Maiden songs. Add Freewheel Burning, Screaming for Vengeance by Priest; Balls to the Wall, Fast As A Shark by Accept; Bark at the Moon, Crazy Train, Miracle Man, and Mama, all by Ozzy. So Europe is somewhere in there, amongst these and not necessarily at the top of the list. I really had to add that in there. It's just a partial list. I didn't include Annihilator, Megadeth, Overkill, WASP, AC/DC or the outro solo on Metallica's Fade to Black, and Kill'em All has a few as well.
Its surprisingly easy for how "shreddy" it sounds. I just came off trying to play EVH's Beat it solo for MJ...and that sounds similarly shreddy...but is waaaaay harder!
People think the hardest part is the sweep picking, he hardest part of the solo is actually the bluesy lick that comes after the first sweep picking stuff...
Quick tip on the arpeggios at the beginning, when he hammers on 10, on the E, DONT, just pick it THEN pull off. It will save you frustration and it sounds just as good
I think the 2 down picks are correct but what is essential imo is the ever so slight pause after the very 1st downward pluck which allows for that 'gallop'. Secondly imo there should be a flick -action down on the 1st string which allows for a definite hammer on on the 1st string.
Totally correct. Imagine you are picking every note. Which you’re not but this will help the phrase. B B D D F# D . Which gives it that gallop . So John is playing: single B single D F# pull off to D And it’s tricky to get out of the mode that you’re doing.. good luck
Hey guys, for those of you who mastered this solo, I've got a question. I am wondering how did you manage to play it as fast as it should be cuz i've been practicing for a week non stop and my finger placement is perfect however i don't seem to be picking fast enough to achieve the awesome sound, you guys have any tips on how i can improve my speed? thanks. Those who have the same problem feel free to say so!

Hi ! Carl, just want to say hi ! and thanks so much for all your guitar lessons here in TH-cam...Been a fan since (even though I never subscribed to your channel) and been watching some of my favorite songs and solos that you taught like Something by The Beatles, Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, etc...I have actually learned and mastered them because of you...I just thought that you're one of the most under appreciated guitar teacher here in youtube...In my own honest opinion, I think that you're better than Marty Schwartz, and everyone else because your tone and licks are more accurate, sounds like the original recording of these songs that you teach...keep up the great work ! Thanks a lot again from the bottom of my heart...
EDIT: This is definitely a great tutorial, thank you for creating great content) I was wondering that, instead of hammer on 14th fret, why not let the up stroke movement naturally hit the E string after the mini sweep pick? The motion feels natural to me. 2x 16th note sweep, then 2x 32th note with up pick motion + pull off.
Totally right, you have the opening phrasing wrong. Let’s imagine you’re picking every note just for the time values. It would be like this: B B D D F# D John plays single B single D F# pulls off to D It’s tricky up to speed. But you’ll get there
@@peterdimitrov6214 it's okay it'll come with time and practice :D keep at it. After finally learning it I managed: th-cam.com/video/e5P0C-RLY7I/w-d-xo.html
@@madden7732 Not exactly alternate picking but John picks 3 notes then pulls off 1, picks 3 notes then pulls off 1. It's fine to do a 2 string sweep for the first 2 notes because sweeping is actually picking. But it has to be followed with an up-pick because one of the coolest thing about these arpeggios and the overall solo is that staccato/percussive feel. In this video, he's picking just 2 notes and then plays 2 legato notes which removes some of the coolness and uniqueness of the sound. Also John ends each arpeggio on the B-string note, except for the last G-arpeggio. Here he's not playing any of these last notes. Another way to put it is that each arpeggio shape, John plays the note on the B-string 6 times, here he's playing this note only 5 times and omitting the last note each time. The trickiest thing about this arpeggio lick is the timing.... It's polyrhythmic and has a 5/4 feel. So the placement of the notes are unintuitive. The B-string note never falls on the beat except for the very first note of each new arpeggio/chord.
These arpegios are completely insane. 5 times the same 3 notes pattern + 1 final note in a 4-beats measure. Playing the notes fast is only half of the way to mastering this solo.
I was really hoping you had a video for this one so I searched it up anyway and had a big smile to see it there. Thx for the great videos I use them a lot
It's definitely not pure semiquavers (16th notes) in the arpeggiated lick. The original pulloffs are demisemiquavers (32nd notes). Not to take anything away from your actual playing...
Hi Carlos,my name's Carlos from spain,i discovered your channel one year ago,i have to say i love it,you lesson are really easy to learn, any chance to do some songs of Europe like yearsterday's new a súper rock song or devil sings the blues, thanks
This is a strange request but it's an evermoving, wierd, a tad dated, but IMHO actually a VERY fun song to play! It has no solo but the song is so fun & different it's as if the song is sort of a solo. I'm talking about....WHIP IT, by DEVO. LOL, Yeah ,I know , it's DEVO but reserve judgement from a hard rock lover! Also Surf Melody (or medley?) by Jr Brown. It also keeps chugging along, is long and somewhat challenging! And maybe how to get that tone from the guitar riff of "James Bond"! I'm sure a Fender Twin & Strat or Tele are quintessential elements needed to dial in that sound. O.K. I'll not press my luck anymore. These are just some songs I've stashed in my head over the years to have fun with! TAKE CARE!!
Awesome job! Thanks! In the initial lick, I've found easier to hummer on the 14th, then play that note and pull-off to 10 again (something like 10h14 14p10 instead of just 10h14p10). Yeah, I know it should be easier to play the lick with two pickings instead of three, but I can't get enough speed with the sweep picking. Is that wrong?

That pentatonic rundown in the middle is absolutely magnificent. I've heard it 100's of times and it still gives me the shivers.
Definitely! It's very bluesey. Somewhat reminds me of slash his style.

Look up David Escobar's video. The tabs are slightly different from what he plays in his video, but the technique is flawless.
You can alternate pick, or down pick. I prefer down picking, because it is easier for me. But your choice.
I'd also recommend watching Ben eller, he did an in depth picking lesson on it :)
after you can play technical difficulties you will find it easy
