Finally someone got it right. If you watch older videos of Norum playing, he is alternate picking. As you said, it makes the timing correct and sweeping it just doesn't "sound" right. Bravo!!
Thanks for watching Shredders! What solos do you want me to break down for you? Anything that's always been impossible, or just never made sense? Let me know! 🎸
Tom, I'd love to see a guitarist as advanced as yourself (and as nit-picking and OCD about how an actual solo/lick was played) break down some really iconic, classic solos like Hugh Burns "Baker Street" solo or Ian Bairnson''s "Wuthering Heights" outro solo (the full album version if possible) or how the double stops were actually played on Thin Lizzy's "Whiskey In The Jar" on the second part of the solo. Then there are ones like Jefferson Starship's "Jane" solo or Steve Lukather's fantastic solo on Boz Skaggs "Breakdown Dead Ahead" or both solos on Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" ...... these songs never get mentioned in Guitar mags or guitar tab books.
Thank you, you really helped me. I couldn't understand the rhythm for a long time. There are many videos on TH-cam where this solo is analyzed, but not one has been explained as well. You're the best!
John is such a great soloist. He has that same vibe and feel that has always made rock guitar playing ear catching John has great communication through his (GUITAR) solo's 🤘
I thought I had that one down pretty good until you came along and throw a spanner in the work! Thanks a mil for correcting my mistakes. Just came across your channel and subscribed straight away. Keep up the awesome work and G'day from Mossman in the far north🤘🎸
I believe Norum took Blackmore's triad picking he plays on songs like Burn and many Rainbow tunes, and expanded on it with the pull-off. I just love 80s guitarists who were basically hot-rodded 70s players, such as Norum, Sykes and Campbell. Also it's worth noting that the solo section in this song modulates to B minor from F# minor, the key of the rest of the song. I'm sure most people realize this, but it helps to give the solo some excitement, as does the harmonizing line a third above. Those triads would be D, Em, F# m and Bm respectively.
I‘ve been asked to record this for a cover version of a friend. Since I‘m not a fan of Europe and not familiar with John Norum‘s playing, i thought this would be easy. But then i realiized that it‘s rather difficult. Not so much the actual pattern but playing it correctly at that speed (approx 117bpm) and then adding a second voice on top.
Thank you so much for this! I have watched so many videos trying to figure out the feel of it, and every time I tried hybrid picking like they said, it felt so off.
Brother, excellent explanation! I've been using this picking technique but I couldn't get the timing right and now you've given the perfect tip! I would like a similar explanation for getting the correct timing of Jump! by Van Halen. Thank you very much!
Yep, there's a difference. And you are right. Edit: when I did this comment, I'm was without the guitar in my hands. Today I studied that picking pattern and... Voilà! Before studying the picking pattern with your video It seemed impossible to play that way correctly. Thank you so much!
I’ve just discovered your channel and I think it’s absolutely brilliant. I’ve only watched about a dozen of your videos so far, and you’ve mentioned this part of the Final Countdown solo in 2-3 of them, which led me to this video. Do you teach the rest of the solo anywhere? I’m struggling with the picking in the fast blues part.
This solo is my nemesis; I thought I had it, then looked at this video again to make sure I was doing it correctly and noticed that I was always down-picking on the B at 12 and then up-picking the E at ten over and over.... but you are down-picking the first time and up-pick the second time at the B at 12, then down picking the E at ten. It's such a small difference, but it seems important...thanks for making this very clear; I just missed it the first time...the first is outside picking, and the second is inside picking.
I guess I was playing it wrong too. I was doing two down strokes on the first two notes. The thing I notice about the correct way is that the picking pattern shifts... I guess I gotta get used to that.
@@HigherPlanes Proof! Thanks for sharing. Even without the evidence, it's clear from the way the notes are accented and where they sit on the grid, otherwise it'd be much harder to be rhythmically accurate with the econo approach.
I don't know when I started to learn this solo...I used alternative picking and I am doing it in acoustic...I have practised a lot and feels ok without backing track but whenever I try it with backing track it always gets messed up and doesn't feel right please tell me how could I make it right
dude did you lower your middle pick up because you always keep hitting it? I have the same issue but I like 4th pick position for strumming not sure the outcome of lowering the pickup that much
it depends what you want to get out from learning to play this solo. if you just want to play it just for playing it, then do it however you want - whicheverway enables you to play the solo the way you want it to sound. if this is sweeping/economy then thats perfectly fine. but if you are wanting to learn new techniques of playing that you can incorporate into your own playing, or study a guitar players playing, you do it the way they did it, I did the same as Tom for a long time, I economypicked the solo but it never sounded right, especially while isolated. now, after learning the proper way as to how john norum plays it, it not only sounds right but i also learned a new technique
Thanks for this lesson and all the details. I’m now adding the pull offs. I’d like to gauge my timing. How would you recommend using a Metronome to this? One click per note or one click synched to the B-String note?
Why wouldnt the Yngwie method of down-down-up be just as good? Its still pick, pick, pick and I seriously doubt people can tell which direction the string is being picked.
@@TomShreds it sounds that you must do accents unevenly, i.e. on different notes of the same pattern. Or is it okay to not change the accented note? That is the highest note before the pull off ? Or placing the accent accordingly to the drums' beat, but then the accented note would change everytime you repeat the pattern?
I play it with economy picking. Sounds great and feels more natural to me. I don't care if John Norum plays it exactly like that or not, and I'm tired of TH-cam videos telling me I'm playing "wrong".
I agree, I love the song but a neck injury makes it hard for the messages to get from my brain to my hands, I just play it the best I can and I don’t apologise to anyone ! Keep playing.
I’d like to see Tom and Ben Eller in a room fighting about who is correct here….because they’re both equally sure they’re doing it correctly but they play it differently. Somebody is wrong! 😀
Hey Tom are you using a room mic, or maybe you are doing your commentary live as you play ? In any event there is a lot of annoying high pitched pick noise that kind of ruins the experience for me.
Good lesson but why do tutorials always have the camera set up from the wrong angle, cutting off the rest of the fretboard when the hand moves down the neck. Surely its better us looking from the bridge side and/or down from the players point of view.
Sorry to hear it’s such a struggle! It’s a frustrating one hey. I’d suggest just starting with the first 3 notes, and get those perfect, and then (a few days later) add another note, all the whole prioritising the down up picking pattern (this is king). Treat it like a broken leg that you’ve just had surgery on, be very intentional and deliberate in how you play this, and the new habits will form. You’re in the process of trying to retrain your habits, so take baby steps! If you want to book in a lesson it’ll enable me to help further. Happy practising 🎸
Same here. Let´s try with baby steps. The fretting hand is a challenge as well for me, regarding the order of putting down my fingers. It´s a reverse pattern I´m so NOT used to... 🙃
this is the way John Norum plays it, so if you want to learn the technique he used on the recording and live, this video is perfect. If you just want to play the solo, then feel free to take the easy way - play how you want to.
I could listen to that tone all day
Finally someone got it right. If you watch older videos of Norum playing, he is alternate picking. As you said, it makes the timing correct and sweeping it just doesn't "sound" right. Bravo!!
Finally!!! Thanks to the simplified version I have been able to fit those 5 circles into 4 beats! Thank a lot.
I have finally, finally got it . I am going to crawl out to the garden and die a happy man . Thank you Tom ❤

Ed King also uses this phrase/lick on the 2nd solo to Lynyrd Skynyrds "Sweet Home Alabama"
Nobody plays that solo correctly either! Gary Rossington played something much simpler for that solo after Ed left the band.

I think, that Norum took it from Gary Moore. Actually, Moore is the daddy of Norum, Sykes and Campbell.

Please tell the size of suitable guitar pic ...
Any size works! Live with my cover band I play this using a .6, but this one is a 1.5 which works even better.
Thanks for this lesson and all the details. I’m now adding the pull offs. I’d like to gauge my timing.

Why wouldnt the Yngwie method of down-down-up be just as good? Its still pick, pick, pick and I seriously doubt people can tell which direction the string is being picked.
Simple answer: rhythmic consistency. Alternate is potentially sloppier, but far easier to play in time.
Is it wrong to only do upstrokes on the 2nd string? Instead of one down and one up?
Always up seems more natural , economic, to me
Economical yes, but the point of this video is that if you alternate pick it (plus pull offs), you’ll find it easier to be rhythmically consistent.
