The pinhole cast-on method is perfect for doilies, toys, and other circular projects where you need an invisible join the center. This video shows you two different versions - one using a crochet hook. I'll also show you how to do the pinhole cast-on with circular needles using the magic loop technique. Enjoy

I love this simple caston!! I’m a crocheter and this is so much easier than the crochet pinhole cast on I’ve been using. Brilliant
As along time crocheter, I always wondered how one would cast on for a circular knit project. This gives me so many ideas on how to combine both worlds.
This was so thorough. I know how to do magic loop in crochet and was pleased to see it used here, in addition to a clear tutorial for the pinhole cast on. Thank you, Norman. ❤
Thanks for the video! Present-day new knitters are so lucky. They have all these clear, easy-to-follow youtube videos. When I learnt to knit I had to figure out myself how to start and end, etc. That was past 60 years ago when I was lucky if I found some old knitting instruction booklet.
Norman's instructions are among the best on TH-cam. Thanks for teaching this craft.
When I moved to the USA 40 years ago nobody was knitting, I was afraid that it was a skill that would go lost. Later on, I met some knitters but never found in here anyone knitting continental way. They were surprised to see how much faster the continental way was compared to English knitting.
yeah..they sure do. was much more of a struggle even 15 years ago!
Hi Norman. What an interesting video! I’ve seen a few short videos on the pinhole cast on but yours is the absolute best! Who knew that there are so many ways to do this! Thanks for another amazing tutorial!❤
Absolutely THE BEST tutorial on that technique on TH-cam.
Excellent, clear instructions, thank you!
Wow, thanks!
Oh thank you! I could have used this a few months back. Your instructions are so clear and the tip about the crochet hook is wonderful!!
Brilliant! Thank you so much, Norman❤❤
I should have watched this video first. Excellent!
So easy to understand!
It was so fun to watch you crochet. I learned crocheting decades ago and am a two-year old knitter now.
ha...well...I should do it more often...but so little time!
Simply Godsent I am planning on doing the musselburgh hat . Thank you
You are so welcome
Thank you Norman. Clear instruction and easy to follow your movements.
Thank you for this second channel 🎉😂❤ just subbed
Thanks for subbing and welcome
I knew how to do the crochet magic ring, but never knew about the pinhole cast on! I haven’t knitted anything that would need this in a long while, but I’m glad to learn of it in case I ever need it again. Thank you for the informative video.
Marvellous! Thank you for sharing these amazing alternatives to casting. Greetings from Australia.
Thank you for offer varied version yo include the crochet version!!😊😊
For the crochet version, I like to do the single crochets as if I was going to do an 8 sctog (but I never finish the tog part), where I only pull through one loop instead of both to complete the stitch. That way I end up with 8 stitches on the hook ready to to transfer to needles. It also makes the stitches in the center a little less bulky than finishing a ring and then picking up. It looks pretty much indistinguishable from knitting.
Another comprehensive and clear tutorial!
This was exactly what I needed! Thanks so much
You're so welcome!
Thank you. Norman! I didn't know the name of this, but i was looking for instructions. Most appreciated!
You are so welcome
Thank you!!!
I love this! Thank you. I have a pair of socks toe up that uses this technique. Very thorough for me to understand.
Yay! This is exactly what I have been looking for. I have a project in mind that I need this for. Thank you!
Thank you ❤ It's so good to have more than one way to do this. 😊
I totally agree!
Love this, Norman! Thank you so much for showing me multiple options to add to my stitch arsenal. I can see this as a better, less fussy, beginning to my beanies. 🥰
🤟💜✌️🧶
oh, you knit them top down? but yeah..works well for beanies!
I watched this because i always find your videos interesting and fun to watch even if i think I'll never use that specific technique. But less than a week later i found myself needing to do a pinhole cast-on 😂 So glad I knew exactly where to go! Thank you again, Norman! 💜
haha..well as they say, you never know! Glad I could be of help :)
Thanks a lot Norman. I learned something new❤. I only knew Magic Ring in Crochet. Such a big Help❤
Lovely Tuto, thanks! The pinhole cast on is also great for pi shawls.
yes, good call!
This is SO helpful. I've been making the Vivid blanket from Tin Can Knits, and have not been enjoying the process of beginning the squares with a pinhole cast on, which I never seem to get right. Your video makes it perfectly clear at last. Thank you!
This iswonderful
❤
Hi Norman. Thank you for sharing how to do the pin hole cast on. I have been over You Tube trying to be able to get started. I just came across your podcast for this and I am going to give it a try. Do you have a podcast to show how to knit the magic Loop? I cannot remember which needle to pull out. the top or bottom. Thank you, Thank you so much.
yes, I have a second youtube channel and a blog
Maybe check that out as well: th-cam.com/channels/sAIlWdyXrLE1hgujwNkHGg.html
Thank you so much. I have been obsessed trying to figure out the start if the musselburgh hat and you nailed it!!!
Can you add the English method of doing this? Thanks
no, my channel is all about continental knitting.
