  • Drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have been everywhere lately, but the weight loss industrial complex isn't new. In this episode, Margo and Tashira interrogate western society's fascination with thinness, standards of beauty, "acceptable" bodily modifications and celebrity culture. Overall, they encourage listeners to consult reputable physicians to make the best decisions for their bodies.

    This was an interesting conversation. Please know that many people have been prescribed this medication not because they want to lose 20 pounds, or 50 for that matter. But for people whose health is truly compromised by the added weight. Thank you for making that distinction.
    When my trusted, longtime physician whom I trust suggested this, I shared my concerns. We talked over a couple of visits before I chose to try the medication. I have loss over 60 pounds and had the best physical results that I have had in over 20 years. I made it clear that I have no desire to be skinny and look like I did when I was 20. My goal is to not have to take the six medications that I have been taking for years and get to a place where I feel and am healthy. I continue to enjoy food everyday. I eat moderately, but I still eat. I have not had the side effects that the media has chosen to highlight. Before the conversation with my doctor, I was not aware of the celebrity use of the drug.
    This is a decision for the individual and their doctor.

      Thank you so much for sharing your results and use of Ozempic. You are certainly right that it's a conversation for the individual and a medical professional. Wishing you the best on the journey to great health!

      I relate 100% to everything you stated. I too have been on these classes of drugs and have lost over 50 lbs. It was a matter of health for me.

    My concern is depriving those who NEED the drug and driving the cost of the product so that those who NEED the drug are experiencing problems securing the drug.

    • @silvia_music
      @silvia_music ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Demand doesn’t drive the cost of the product. Shareholder profit does. Rather than get mad at other sick people, get mad at the manufacturers for creating a shortage and driving up prices.

      i think this is the first line of concern, for sure. how is something being used for people who dont need it while those who do cannot access it?

    Love the podcast and so glad to see these topics being discussed! I write not to shame anyone at all who are using these drugs, but rather as a very concerned therapist. I work with eating disorders and I feel like it is important to ID that fat bias is rampant in the medical community and that a vast majority of drs are prescribing these medications without doing any sort of screening for eating disorder histories. Data also tells us that BiPoC individuals are already under diagnosed/evaluated and less likely to receive treatment for eating disorders.
    The creators of Ozempic, Novo Nordisk, spent a total of $4.6 million just on lobbying the federal government last year, and $1.3 million in the first three months of 2023. This does not begin to account for the vast amounts of money that researchers and doctors who worked on the trials have been paid to subsequently speak at conferences etc about the "benefits" of these drugs, often not disclosing their links to Novo Nodisk. The limited information and trials that have been conducted simply are rife with conflicts of interest. Fatima Cody Stanford who serves on the federal health and agriculture departments Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee has been paid at least $27,000 by Novo Nordisk for consulting and speaking engagements. More disturbingly even less research exists for the use of these drugs in children yet the American Academy of Pediatrics released guidelines supporting...even encouraging the use of these medications (and weight loss surgery) for children ages 12 and up with studies that include small pools of participants and are short-term. No eating disorder experts were consulted about these recommendations despite adolescence being the highest risk time to develop an eating disorder.
    Additionally, when injectables are stopped the weight returns and many are not being informed that this may then require lifetime use of this medication. I really would love for there to be a further conversation with some of those who have been closely following the actions of this company, are in the eating disorder field, and who have been broadening the understanding of eating disorders (diagnosis, access to treatment, and disparities) in communities of color. Women are an easy target. These conversations are so highly talked about because it’s easy for people to talk about women’s bodies and images especially when it comes to weight. It’s gross. Some of the news feeds talking about the celebs makes me so upset. Media will pick a woman make all types of assumptions and have a full chat about this woman without any real facts or considering the complexity people are dealing with when it comes to image and weight. We accept Botox but not weight loss drugs etc etc. Would be call out celebrity men who take weight loss drugs? Andy Cohen finds is comical to ask the female guest about weight but he wouldn’t open his mouth to ask the men 😏. Body modifications I would think is higher in men (ie: body builders, muscle building, testosterone drugs etc.) but we make that more acceptable?
    This is a great conversation but has a lot of complex arguments.

    I haven't ask the doc about it, but I have noticed this drug has been mentioned at my DERMATOLOGISTS office. I inquired about what it was because their was a sign in the office saying "Want to lose weight?" (or something to that effect) and when I asked the PA about it, she mentioned an injection. I asked if it was the drug I've been hearing about online and she said 'Yes'. So, they're definitely getting it prescribed, I'm not sure how the reasoning is being justified.... I was just shocked it was offered at my DERM.

    Overall I enjoy this Podcast and find the hosts entertaining and usually thoughtful. However, this episode highlights for me that there’s been a trending lack of research done for some of the topics discussed. Ozempic and others like it, are not pills; they’re injections. The lack of specificity or erroneous info included here detracts from this discourse’s credibility. Just a reminder that your “hot takes” are great, but if your platform is to be an elevated conversation on hot topics, then do the needed due diligence. ✌🏽

      This is an unfair expectation as this is not a news podcast and we are not doctors. We offered several disclaimers in this episode about our knowledge and expertise. Most importantly, we didn't condemn the drug or those like it. Instead, encouraged folks to make sound decisions with their healthcare professionals. This podcast is opinion-based and if you seek greater "due diligence," then we encourage you to tune into another platform. Thanks for listening! ✌🏼

    Actually, I’m a little tired of this message that continues to perpetuate itself on the Internet and blogs concerning women not needing a man surely you have to realize that the reason that men and women need to come together and procreate is because we both need one another. So let’s stop devaluing male and female relationships. Instead of saying, choose yourself, how about you just choose better. We lower our standards. We choose out of desperation or trying to be the pick me or some desire to fulfill this fairytale dream that we’ve been fed that is not realistic for anyone, which is further perpetuated through not only patriarchy, but capitalistic idealization, but we don’t take ownership for our own bad choices and ignore red flags when they present themselves. so rather than say, choose yourself how about you choose yourself first and choose better when it comes to a male partner. There are just as many violent and dysfunctional same-sex relationships as there are heterosexual relationships. Let’s stop being disingenuous with the information and call it for what it is accountability. You have to be accountability for how you allow someone to treat you. BTW I adore you both and your commentary but I vehemently disagree that male and female relationships are unhealthy and being alone is a better alternative… love the outfits especially the boots❤
