At Dollar General, the business model is exploitation on both sides of the counter. They take equally advantage of their low income customers as much as they do their employees.

I have a dollar general down the street from where I live and where I work. The employees look miserable. The store is always a mess but I can understand why it’s like that. It’s unfortunate that employees are sometimes forced to run the store by themselves. You’re expected to ring people out, stock the shelves etc.. then when people are waiting to be cashed out they get super rude with the employees. It’s not that people don’t want to work. People want to be treated like human beings that have feelings.

If a lot more people did this, it would give Dollar General a wake up call. Close the store and walk out due to being used, over worked, bullied, lied to, under paid, etc. A STRIKE would do DG some good.

I quit Dollar General because I lost hours of work on my schedule. They can change it anytime and give barley any notice. Their was a mandatory meeting that i didn't know was mandatory until an hour before it started. You work tomorrow but you check the schedule again and they change it. I was promised once another person came in i could get a proper night shift. They got in and nothing happened. I worked at Sams Club and they treated me far better than Dollar General.

They are always so horribly understaffed. And it doesn't matter what you get it hired in to do you will be a cashier standing on hard concrete with no mat, you will be cleaning mopping sweeping stocking climbing ladders. And be prepared to do it in between customers if you have a break in the line which is hardly ever. He would have a lot happier employees if they weren't pushed so hard. Dollar general workers are probably some of the hardest working folks you will meet. And take notice when your friends go to work there versus a month down the line. Their whole attitude is going to be one of frustration and so miserably tired.

I have heard from former DG managers that DG rarely fires employees, only for extreme violations. What they do is reduce or constantly change working hours until the employee quits. This reduces or negates the ability of the employees to collect unemployment. Also, most of the employees are part time. Managers are salaried, the rest are hourly. Some are 'key holders', they also open and close the stores as do the managers and asst mgrs. At one store nearby, the asst mgr has been working over 60 hrs a week do to the mgr quitting. The shelves were empty because the regular workers were getting their hours reduced to 8 to 10 hours per week. DG also also delivers at times not scheduled. The nearby store aisles are constantly partially blocked by carts containing stock that hasn't been shelved due to lack of staff hours. Their are times that only one employee is working, yet they are expected to stock and check out customers and clean the store. It is easy to see why DG has a high turnover of staff!

As a dollar general employee right now working another job, I have worked there for only a year. This job has brought me hell. My store manager is absolute shit to me and my co-workers. This week, a co-worker tested positive for Covid and the fact that I was exposed to that said co-worker, our manager does not give a fuck about that. She explains that “she has plans for Fourth of July” and wants me and that co-worker who tested positive for Covid to work the Fourth of July. I get it that we are down to only 5 employees but that is also a management issue and she has not even done background checks on people who did apply. The work environment is brutal. I started working when I was 18 and during the summer after my freshman year of college. I’m now 20 and the youngest worker there. I’m the only one being paid 10 an hour while my other co-workers are being paid $11.25 an hour. Never have I been more exhausted and more pissed at my store manager. I can go on a tangent but to the people who wish to work for dollar general: be ready for hell.

@@pamelabrown9484 this was about 5 years ago, I was depressed, I couldn’t afford food, couldn’t afford bulls, and I couldn’t buy a car, I had to pay upwards 20% of my paycheck to co workers to take and bring me and another 28% to taxes. After all that settled in I was bringing home 80-90$ a week, I was often overworked on days I was worked just so they can reduce hours on the clock, I had to deal with abuse from coworkers and customers(I was assaulted a few times), I had to even SHOP for customers somtimes. I’d work hard to recover shelves, while stocking, and being a cashier at the same often running the entire store alone while my manager who is the only other employee with me because they only work 2 at a time would me smoking or missing. I often had lines out the door because I was expected to do so much and the lines felt like they never moved because they only let 2 people work. They don’t let sales associates do returns or refunds or open the register it all requires s key so you will often have to leave that looooong as line with people walking out the door leaving carts and carts of stuff for you to put up, while trying to find the one person who has the key. They kept the hours so low so you couldn’t get company benefits, and they don’t offer any employee discounts. The whole time I worked for that company I was always told how I wasn’t fast enough or good enough, when I worked harder than most there, I was getting wrote up because I couldn’t get to all the stock and shelves because the register and refunds would get out of control. Even have to blow up balloons and tie strings on everyday because 12 people would come in with birthdays. The POS system would go down every single day from it being overloaded because it’s one register serving many customers, so you would be made to fix it while being on the phone with their technicians who are over seas and hard to understand and being yeld at by customers on how you can’t use the other 3 registers because there is no cash drawer inside them, and sadly enough you can’t just stock the shelves somtimes you have to go around the entire store Puting fresh new sales tags on entire sectionals of items. It’s to much for one person and it’s way to low of pay .

I got hired on at 11.50 an hour, but thats still not even close to a living wage. I still have to budget down to the dollar and I live in a cheapo apartment, own my car with the cheapest insurance I could find, and work 50+ hours per week. Even sacrifice my day off just to make a few extra bucks. Corporate and managers demand that a 1700 piece truck goes from truck to floor in 48 hours, yet I am the ONLY employee that works the freight...alone. I delivered an ultimatum to them a few days ago, either give my at least 16 an hour, or I walk.
I do have other employment offers pending, whom are willing to pay me that, or more. So, should they fail to meet that demand, then, I walk out that day and go to work for someone else who will pay me at least something I can live somewhat comfortably on.

The living wage would be different in each case because of the way we choose to live. You can't expect an employer to take that into account when calculating what to pay his employees. It would be impossible to do so.

I quit as a manager and this has to be the worst business that I have ever known. The next worse outfit is not even close. I would not hire anyone for more than $10 starting because it would not be approved. They push product into the store faster than it can be sold and it eventually fills up the back room until the full rolltainers, uboats, and totes creep out into the isles, never to be dealt with. Their shrink (theft or otherwise missing product) is usually somewhere between $20K and $148k a year per store. There are exceptions but very rare. They are hurting so bad for managers that I know some who were hired over the phone, site unseen. They still have to go through a background check but they get the green light on the phone interview. As long as they continue to stay ahead of their losses and keep the stores minimally staffed, they look at it as a win. Just look at their product line. Poor quality groceries, junk food, sodas, loads of China made product and tons of candy. Just what all their low income and poor people need. Wake up and stop spending what little bit you have in a business that could care less for you.

This isn’t capitalism. This is crony capitalism.
I’d appreciate it if people like the one featured in this video…actually took the time to educate themself on the difference.
Especially when he’s a visual representation of the luxuries of capitalism (I.E. fashion, private property, consumerism, excess consumption, etc).
While I firmly believe places like this are destructive and even predatory…at the end of the day, it’s still a no skill/low skill job.
    Not a career.
Management positions should be the only technical exception to ‘career’.
Just because the job isn’t fun, it isn’t challenging, does not require continued development, etc etc - it does not magically mean that you get equal or close to the compensation those who do engage in these aspects , receive.
By the way, a living wage…is typically around 55k and up a year.
The same earnings (outside of major cities) that many skilled or educated workers make in the lower/mid rungs of the middle class.
So does anyone truly believe that DH employees deserve to earn as much?
Then if they do, what would your excuse be to the skilled or educated worker that makes the same…but provides a more valuable resource to the community and/or has a far more physically and mentally demanding (etc) job?
Is the solution to pay them more than?
But when you do that, you’ve now created an aspect of inflation.
Because now that DG employee making 55k a year, will eventually become the same as when hey made 22k a year.
As the dollar is worst less when the cost of manufacturing goods and distribution of said goods naturally increases too.
Because everything requires people and money to create.
Without exceeding in profits, the need to drive innovation and motivation, decreases.
The risk no longer matches the reward.
And humans by nature are creatures of habit.
It’s a biological disadvantage for us to seek unnecessary difficulty - so why would we intentionally work harder if there was no direct benefit to ourselves?
After all…the very guy proclaiming that the solution is this Marxist Utopia…clearly does not like partaking in difficult things that work towards the betterment of oneself, or others.
Hence why he’s an adult that looks like a child, working at a dollar store.
Rather than putting in the hard work that is required to get more out of himself,or to get more for those around him.
It’s almost as if these people just want the fruits of others labor…without putting forth equal in return themselves.
It’s almost as if they’re the ones who are greedy…not the very boogie man they create via the effigy of capitalism.
