Thanks for the video, can you share the segment details or a link? I searched segments on Strava and found the hill on Google maps, but couldn't find a segment that appeared to match. I'd love to give it a try with some friends.
I used to have that mindset too, but I actually think my fitness improved when I got an expensive bike because the gears go higher and also I'm now more stoked about riding on long bike paths, so I do it more often, whereas long distance riding used to be not nearly as fun on a budget bike. There's something really irritating about people passing you while giving way less effort than you just becausse they have better bikes than you. It made me feel really discouraged, and that feeling can ruin a workout.
Fun video, but I feel like I missed something. What was the point in having the climber on a 36 pound bike? Seems like everything that happened after that was, if not irrelevant, at least predictable. On a 7kg bike, the climber still wins handily, even with a dropped chain. I have clearly misunderstood something.
When you drop a vchain you don't have to stop. Overshoot in the opposite. Direction where the chain was dropped. Gently pedal until the chain ring picks up the train. You can practice this on your trainer.
If you've never ridden a bike with those cheap bladed aluminium wheels, you wouldn't believe the amount of flex (or how heavy they are). It feels like you're going backwards on the flat, let alone uphill.
Please don't buy a Eurobike if you're on a budget, you can get so much more second hand for the same money. They shouldn't be allowed to put bike in their name....
Great example of “its not the bike but the athlete” so train hard forget about the marginal gains and spending unnecessary to make you 2-3 watts faster.
Insane power from Jackson nearly 400watts for 11 mins, very rough maths total train weight 96kg playing your 85kg. I do love my ulterga 52-36 11-34 but I can't produce 400 watts for 10 mins
Crazy power and fitness. I found a local 500m climb that looks like an exponential curve, maxing at 18%, on my ~32lb dual sus MTB with 32-46 gearing, and I almost had a heart attack by the end of it. I’m interested to try it on my ~19lb road bike with 34-34 gearing and see if the lighter weight but harder gearing can see me up it. I don’t like the thought of having to unclip on such a steep segment if I fail!!!
My road bike is aluminum frame with carbon fork, it is quite stiff I barely feel any flex when going uphill out of the saddle and putting down the watts.
36 pounds?? I don't think my grandmother's balloon-tyre 3-speed Raleigh from the 1930s weighed that much, even with the steel rack, fenders, and full wrap-around chain-guard included.
It's the aero look with the cheap materials. You get away with all the aero on an expensive bike because they use expensive materials to reduce the weight, not so on a Eurobike.

On longer group ride or gravel races that tend to have elevation gain, should my focus be on trying to become the best "climber" I can and hope I can hang on for the finish? Or go back to crits?
