Yeah, one thing that annoyed me about the film was Madonna singing "Buenas Aires" the entire time. You would have thought that someone would have corrected her during the process.
thanks for response... went to see Madonna in Sevilla, (sticky and sweet tour) and she did not even bother with a Spanish greeting.. she asked the crowd to sing with her (in English) and when did they not respond (understandably) she called them mother***kers! Charming.
Probably and the concert was not hectic either.. under-rehearsed one night only and it showed that they were not familiar with the venue... thank God for Ms. Roger and Mr. Martin! You are nice man or woman!?

But no, she is not a talented singer. And I know that the general consensus among people in the field agree. I’m not saying she’s the worst I’ve heard. But no, not notably good. If you’ve heard something of hers that you thought was remarkable in some way, I would love to hear a suggestion!
She's perfect for Evita for me, her voice, style and accent, all fit in the character, maybe LuPone has more singing skill, but Roger's portrait's better.
Just been listening to a few versions of this musical in preparation for playing in the pit band for a production. I have to say that I disliked her singing ability at first but Elena's performance has grown on me and I now prefer it to the other 'real' singers' versions. Maybe it's just her accent or the standard of musicianship and arrangements on the 2012 Broadway Cast version or the abandon with which she reaches, not always successfully, for some of the high notes. I saw her recently in 'The German Doctor' and she was just as impressive an actress imho. I think however that if given the choice I would chose Patti to hear perform this live.
I love how she is enjoying singing this. Then she dances to the music. I think she is wonderful- her acting her portrayal and characterization is skillful and strong. She dances. And her vocals have an edge and rawness. Different from other Evitas , yes. As she should be.
I know Elena Rodgers gets a *lot* of hate, but I have to give her a ton of credit: This is a very difficult part that requires a range that most people don't have & she's singing in a non-native language. She's not my favorite , but credit where credit is due
Elena Rodger isn’t bad, but agreed that some of the ranges may be a stretch for her. I love that she is the first Argentinian to represent Eva Peron. I feel her accent adds to the authenticity of the role and she is up there killing it!

@@DocRunaway to be fair, they also changed the keys on the movie soundtrack because loud belting doesn’t translate very well in a film. and at least we got an original song no one has ever been able to top since. Madonna in her prime was an amazing singer when it came to ballads.
I had goosebumps when she sang the line, "Rio de la Plata, florida, corrientes, Nueve de Julio"... I thought I heard Evita herself... she fits the role to a perfect T...
Elena is by far the best Evita there has ever been !! She has an amazingly beautiful and powerful voice and the accent adds so much more depth to the character, without the accent it sounds fake. A true porteña!

I actually watched this in the Marquis Theatre off of Times Square this past July and being able to watch Elena Roger sing the songs on the CD i purchased is absoloutly spectacular. I absoloutly love Evita and I mean it when I say it: Requiem Evita!
Incredible cast with a heroically voiced Che (superb Rick Martin) instead of the whiny one in previous recordings. Elena Roger surpasses by a long stretch all previous Evitas, fluent in both English and Spanish; her singing of Don't Cry in Spanish (No llores) is above that of Paloma San Basilio. Also in this release the Latin adjective "aeternum" corrected to "aeternam" to match with the feminine "requiem". Wish this excellent version were released on a blu ray or at least dvd!
i genuinely prefer this version to any others. totally agree that Elena's voice is integrally worse than many others (like Lupone) but there's something about it that i love. it's authentic (in many ways) and raw. normally i always go with better vocals, but Elena's voice wins me over every time
I love the raw edge she gave these numbers as well. Elena's voice is actually incredibly versatile. If you haven't already , see if you can find some of her solo albums. Some numbers on them have her singing very gently, without the harsh quality she gave Eva. She's a unique performer.
Between the 2012 cast recording and the 1996 soundtrack, I have a lot of favorites from both. Elena Roger did a terrific job on this song! I prefer this version to Madonna's Buenos Aires. That said, I prefer the film version of Goodnight and Thank You

I think Elena does justice to Evita. She brings in the authenticity and dancing and voice to the role. Patti, in my opinion, will always the best but Elena definitely reaches her level :)
I want the whole thing in this format. This is much better than that awful Alan Parker documentary with that voiceless dancing girl. This is a version of Evita that wouldn't make me smash the television. I've lost so many televisions trying to watch the Alan Parker doco. Elena is the new Goddess on the block.

He speaks English without an accent normally so it probably is unnatural even though he speaks Spanish. I'm bilingual and to add back a Spanish accent into English is weird, especially after I worked so long to get rid of it.

He speaks English without an accent normally so it probably is unnatural even though he speaks Spanish. I'm bilingual and to add back a Spanish accent into English is weird, especially after I worked so long to get rid of it.

I looked for the name of the conductor, and couldn't find it in the credits. Not here, nor in the website of the show. I didn't give up and finally I found out the conductor is Kristen Blodgette. How come? Shouldn't it be written here? Please add it!
I don't care for the newer arrangement. I like the edgier arrangement found in the original cast recording.
