    It's good that you made that video, 2 years ago. It is still great and saves my lathe

      Glad I could help, mine needs doing again, which is something you have to do from time to time. All the best, Matt 👍

    Thank you Matt.
    I have the same model and the same clutch problem. Your video helps with the anxiety of disassembling.

      You’re welcome 🙏. The most terrifying bit is I didn’t know how much force the spring was under. Just keep your weight on as you undo it. They need readjusting every so often which is a pain! Mine has recently started slipping again, not adjusted since this video though. All the best, Matt. 👍

    Hello Matt from down under. Love your channel. I'm a retired toolmaker and like you I had the opportunity to buy a late 60's Harrison L6 recently. lovely machine. Ex Queensland Institute of Technology. with very little wear although I have a question about a rattly clutch. The springs you have fitted behind the drive plate seem to have solved the rattle but what are your thoughts about long term wear given the plate will be in constant contact (albeit very lightly) with the clutch plate outer ? Btw don't feel too bad about the colour of your lathe. Mine was originally grey but repainted Kermit (the frog) green .
    Cheers
    John

      Hi John, I'd prefer the green 😂. The springs are not strong, they will give up before any wear appears. To my knowledge they should have these springs, I've seen them on other lathes on TH-cam. All the best, Matt 👍

    I just picked picked one up with a hydraulic copy built onto the crosslide, also it came with a two speed motor. Sadly the brake lever is missing and the nut on the end of the brake has been welded on? Both oil levels were low but gears were wet still. Needs a lot of TLC to bring it working order. Thanks for showing the clutch maintenance.

      Hi John&Sandy, Excellent stuff, always good to have a project. Wonder why the nut was welded on? I'm sure with a little bit of work the weld will come off no problem, I don't think the bar will be of a proper weldable grade steel, the nut most likely will be. All the best, Matt

      @@MattChiversWorkshop Opened the gear box cover and found 4 broken pins at the bottom of the case as well as the two halves of the brake stop gland. It is a hardened piece of polished steel 2" in diameter with an internal diameter of 1.120" and 0.550" thick. Due to the lack of a brake they forced changing speeds and the smaller spindle gear has about 10% of its teeth worn off but still 100% functional. I"ll have the lathe make a new one for it's first project. Regards John

    I have the imperial 11" swing version branded "Clearing" rather than "Harrison " but it's basically a "Harrison " L5A and I literally had the exact same two issues with my lathe. I added 3 very light springs to the pins on the outside of the clutch plate with some heavy cleaning and now the clutch is perfect. As for the reversing gear for the power feed rod, no matter how I adjust all the mechanisms, I cannot get it to operate without making an awful racket so I have been on the hunt for a new gear to replace the one I have with absolutely no success. Hopefully you won't have this problem, but the again you should have access to more spare parts since Harrison originates in your neck of the woods. Good luck my man.

      Hi J to the P, the noise will most likely be the selector fork grinding on the gear, if you can pull the selector handle in and out (not left and right as you would when selecting forward or reverse) that’s the sign the fork has come loose and moved inwards. Run the machine while the feed is in forward/reverse, pull the handle outwards to see if it quietens up. The selector fork inside the machine is only held on with a grub screw. 👍

    Nice repair! That looks like a really nice lathe. If you're going to take that back apart again, you might want to consider replacing that bearing, too. If those clutch plates aren't available, maybe weld up the holes in them and drill them back to round.

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plan was to get it to good better operational condition, so I can build the steam engine and look at doing deeper overhaul stuff later on. I need the machine in working condition at all times. 👍

    I didnt see you had any packing washers before you put on the locking nut that retains the big spring , I have about 6 thin washers that go on mine and at present they are stopping me getting the locking nut on , should i start with no washers ?

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Maurice, I didn't have any packing washers at all, don't think I've seen any reference to them either. The big spring and nut is not easy to get back on, you have to push hard and turn at the same time, not easy task. Wonder what the washers are for?!? All the best, Matt

    • @howardosborne8647
      @howardosborne8647 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      are these washers cupped or dished or just flat washers? I notice some of the later Harrisons have some dished 'Belleville washers' on the end of the clutch shaft. There are non on my L6
