    Great watch this episode.The bent pin you were struggling to get out that was bent,was there any symptoms before you changed the pin ?.I have a clunk noise when moving the clutch to drive on high speed.sometimes two clunk noises.once lathe is turning it is fine.Any tips you have would be welcomed ,.Thanks Mike,

    • @MattChiversWorkshop

      Hi Mike, there were no symptoms before, the reason the pin was bent was due to excessive force on the brake lever while trying to engage the brakes. At a guess you may have some slack in the gears, although I’m sure mine does clunk in top speed. I’d take cover off after disconnecting from power, look for wear and any excessive movement between the gears, drain oil and look for any metal fragments. Also check the motor for play in the bearings and it has enough tension.
      I had a grinding noise which turned out to be the forward/reverse gear on the power feed, it had moved ever so slightly, loosened the retaining screw and moved it back. Not been heard since.
      All the best, Matt 👍

    You need a set or two of T-Handle Allen wrenches Matt.

    Mine has always rattled and it does annoy me a bit. It was metricated and overhauled by the factory, but they did not fit the spacer to the lead screw and it kept jumping of the dog clutch driving me mad as it would. Stop the lead screw halfway along the cutting thread. They did everything else and has hardly been used since I got it. I would have threaded the end of the new pin to help removal in the future. I will not be doing it as I am past my expiry date now but in the future somebody might just send it for scrap value. The use of these machine appear to have been forgotten about by the generations that follow us.

    Hi Matt, well done. What where the springs that you used and where did you get them from please.

    • @MattChiversWorkshop

      Hi, I got a mixed bag of springs from my local car parts shop. All the best, Matt 👍

    PS I got some brand new plates at a very reasonable price from Evison Brothers who used to advertise in one of the model engineering magazines. The used to go to Rufforth Autojumble and, are or were, in Bradford I think. They sold all sorts of engineering machinery.

      Couldn’t see anything on them on Google apart from some farm stuff when I searched for them earlier. All the best, laters 👋, Matt

    Hi Matt, good post and really help full, do you know what size springs you used as i plan to do the clutch on my lathe soon. thanks

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Colin, my local car spares shop had mixed bags of springs so I found a bag with 3 the same size that would go over the pins and not threw the holes, they aren’t very strong, but enough to stop the plates rattling around. All the best, Matt

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a blue shade of blue, you know, the blue kind, blue with a hint of blue mixed with a whole heap of blue. Could be RAL 5015……..🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

    What size of springs did you put in as I have the same rattle

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just bought a mixed bag of springs from a car spares shop, found some that were longer than the pins, bigger than the holes, and used them. They are softer than you imagine they’d be too. All the best, Matt.

    Hi Matt. I have the same machine. My brake doesn't work because, I think I'm right in saying, that the braking is effected inside the gearbox by a bronze ring about 3/16" thick which is screwed to the bronze collar that you were struggling to get the pin out of. The cast iron attachment which is fastened to the operating lever rubs against this ring in order to brake it. My brake ring is worn so much that the screws holding it to the bronze coller are flush with it's surface. Hence it rubs on the steel screws making a very nasty noise. I know you've put it all back together now, but would you agree that to replace the ring the whole input shaft has to come out?
    Great video thanks.

    • @MattChiversWorkshop
      @MattChiversWorkshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paul, yes I think the shaft has to be taken out. If I had to do it, I’d drain the oil, pull it apart sort the issue and I’d put new bearings in (may as well while it’s out. I’d be tempted to keep going stripping down though and do all the bearings! 😂. All the best, laters 👋, Matt

    • @v8Mercury
      @v8Mercury 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I looked at mine. I also agree the shaft has to come out. I think that wear piece could have a second life if it were turned around.

    • @v8Mercury
      @v8Mercury 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. With a couple differences. Mine goes to 2000 rpm and I only have 3 gears in the back there.

      I just watched your other video where you completely disassembled the clutch... its the same. Two of those disks.
