Far too many people don't understand understand, understand understand, understand understand the concept of this game. Loved this game back in the day!
I’ll never forget the moment I got my Xbox. Bought it new, the JSRF/SegaGT bundle. The first game I ever played on it was JSRF. The first song I heard my Xbox play was Concept of Love. So goooood! Oh how I played the game, for weeks and weeks. This was before I got Halo, but even after that, JSRF was THE game for me.
Yes omg yes! The timeless graphics, the amazing soundtrack, the streamlined open-world exploration with no time limits. Plus the anti-establishment vibes! My favorite game ever.
One of my first games in 2002 for Xbox. Got super into this and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle at the time. These games made me backtrack and acquire a Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure and Jet Grind Radio.
Answer: Yes, it will always hold up, forever. Like this is the greatest video game ever crafted by human hands. It stands at the APEX of video games. Bomb Rush got really close to overtaking JSRF but they missed the mark by a couple of points. However, they damn sure earn a seat at the table.
I was gonna give you a list of some of my favorite OG box games, but the list became too long after 5 seconds. I have 3 working Xbox's and 2 more in the closet. I've got permanent system link set up and did a co-op Doom 3 about 2 years ago. My friends and I still to this day play Battlefront II on the regular. When I first bought an Xbox, it came bundled with Project Gotham Racing 2 and Crimson Skies. I never played this one or the Dreamcast one, but I love talking about video games. Great content as always, Mr. Camp Xbox!
@campxbox it's super fun but much shorter than the single player game. You and a buddy can crush Doom 3 in an afternoon. The vs game is fun, too! Doom 3 ROE has no co-op but also had a fun vs game.
I loved Jet Set's spiritual successor Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, but I honestly believe that JSRF still plays better, 20-something years later. No disrespect, it just shows how well made the original Xbox game was. Bomb Rush does have a better story that keeps you invested beyond the gameplay.
I disagree. I think Bomb Rush is a much better playing game. It takes the best aspects of JSR and JSRF and improves them. Once you pick up all the nuances in movement and clock the combo system it’s so much better.
BRM is a valid clone and fun in it's own right, but doesn't play as well, sound as good or look as dope as JSRF honestly, it feels empty in comparison..still love to see it though and hope a sequel is in the works
SEGA was absolutely on fire in 2002. This was the year I was introduced to Phantasy Star Online on the GameCube and JSRF on the Xbox. Two games that have left a lasting impact on me. I’m glad I’ve held onto my JSRF disc til this day
I really liked these games, and I really enjoyed Sunset Overdrive also. I thought this game was great and playing Sunset reminded me so heavily of this but bigger, and more over the top.
The Jet Set Radio games are often criticised for being "style over substance", but it seems a lot of people think these games lack substance simply because they control differently from Tony Hawk 😂
JSRF is an absolutely fantastic game as well as it’s spiritual successor BRCF! The cell-shaded art style and funk music alone makes it out to be one of the most unique experiences you can have with any video game.
JSRF is a great game for the Original Xbox, especially since most besides Halo & 3rd party multipats get forgotten by the masses. It does improve on the Dreamcast game in basically everyway except one I feel. The Dreamcast one did a great job in having high tension with the police chasing you throughout the stages. Future sadly lacks this and I wish there was a Jet Set Radio 3 to perfectly blend the wild tricks and amazing style of Future with that tension and fun of the original. We can only guess how the upcoming new JSR game goes.
got the jet set radio future bundle spring of 2002 and was hooked immediately. it gave me a reason to doodle soon to be graffiti all over my school work and living in NYC as a kid through out the 90s and early 2000s it held had a lot of value to bring that art into real life later as a teenager. Today as an adult i still listen to the soundtrack virtually every week or at least every month, its amazing!
One of my favorite things about JSRF is the level-design with its dense and streamlined platforming that also rewards exploration. Bomb Rush Cyberfunk is perfect visually but I feel the level design is too wide open and flat which disrupts the flow of the movement. Thanks for sharing what makes JSRF so special.
Every aspect of this game still holds up perfectly, I find the fluidity of gameplay absolutely flawless and still extremely fun. The soundtrack is in a league of its own, a solid 11/10. Here's hoping the upcoming Jet Set Radio game can at least match JSRF in greatness.
I remember seeing an ad for it in an Xbox magazine or something, immediately knew I had to play it. Rented it from blockbuster and ended up just buying the copy, played it so much the disc eventually just couldn't work anymore 😞
This is your best review yet, really nice writing and execution, you made me listen and watch with interest for 20 mins. And I'm not even a fan of this game
I remember I got this game Xbox bundle that was both Sega GT 2002 and jet set radio future on one disc for Christmas in 2002 but of course back then companies gave us value for what we bought I mean, even with the Nintendo GameCube at one point in 2003 you get 4 first party games in a bundle 149.99 brand new good times
Is that even a question? It's the best game ever and my favorite game of all time, i still play it on my original xbox Recently i introduced the game to my second cousin (she's my uncle's grand daughter, currently she's 7), and she loved it ( as she's practice rollerskate) she choosed rythm (also my favorite character on the game) and loved the music and the game mechanics she was mesmerized. Feels great to share with her the greatness of jet set radii
It also demonstrates, by contrasting with Wind Waker, that there is a lot of variation within cel-shaded art styles. Wind Waker is soft and dreamlike, where JSRF has an intense, high-contrast cyberpunk and almost hip-hop aesthetic
Jet Set Radio Future was a game I never should have played, but I almost feel like I was destined to play it. As a kid, I wasn't interested in anything about this game, the weird anime type of art, the music, the graphics that were pretty lacking compared to other launch titles on the Xbox (like splinter cell) Ive never really played games that come with consoles or demos and I've definitely never played the racing game that came with JSRF. But I love Jet Set so much. I still regularly listen to the soundtrack and everything I thought I wouldn't like about this game, I love. It opened my eyes to so many other great games.
Jet Set Radio indeed holds up to be the best games ever for both Sega and Microsoft. Bombrush Cyberfunk is the direct inspiration and a spiritual successor of JSR.
And it's an early og xbox game too. Sega really worked hard on it and Panzer Dragoon Orta which also came out at that time and still looks insane. I hope Microsoft paid them well, lol, I'm sure they had
One of my fav not only on OG xbox but overall game. Soundtrack is amazing. Some of those songs are way ahead of their time for a game from 2001. Even the pretenders now "Bomb Rush Cyberpunk" and Sunset overdrive are clones compared to JSRF>
I would be interested to see a review of Otogi myth of demons. I played this many years ago and remember it as one of the most magical games I've ever played and have always wondered if I give it more credit than it deserves 😂. Great review
It was from software that made it after it's originals souls game then 3 otogi like games and then back to souls like wish we'd get at least one more but as with everything it had a time and place
This was a guilty pleasure. I bought in a lot I picked up and it was very interesting. I played it for a while but I had to set it down after buying a 360. Couldn't play it there cause the disc was incompatible.
many of them modern skate games trying to emulate the vibes like in bomb rush cyberfunk, hifi rush and the significant others like a frutiger metro theme aesthetics in the early 2000’s 😎🎮
I'd be open to you also reviewing on the channel Sega Dreamcast games and pre-Xbox Microsoft games for consoles and handhelds like Monster Truck Madness 64 or any of the Microsoft games for Game Boy Colour.
It’s a lot better as in I can actually complete the game and not be stuck in a Time battle event from the original game. They made the right move to make it more open world goals friendly Ala THPS 4 when they made that breakthrough. I personally have a save data saved specifically for the chapter where you tag team race with a ball to replay over and over again creating new ways to win in that chapter. 9 out of 10
Jet Set Radio Future is in my top 10 games of all time. If you're a fan like me, don't forget to check out Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, it's basically Jet Set Radio 3 👍
I didn't know that this was planned for the Dreamcast. I wonder how early the DC version was dropped, as JSRF is so far above the original from a technical standpoint: better character models, larger levels, denser environmental detail, more NPCs, and all at double the framerate! Unless Future is just way better optimized than the original, it'd never run on the Dreamcast without a lot of cuts. The jump from JSR to JSRF has to be one of the biggest leaps within a generation, right up there with the early vs late NES games, or Call of Duty 2 vs BlOps 2 and MW3.
Yeah, JSRF is still a classic. I even bothered to play the odd GBA port of the Dreamcast game called Jet Grind Radio that uses the THPS2 engine on the same platform and it’s a nice relic of a different time.
If there is one SEGA game I can see pull off the Game as a Service model it would be Jet Set Radio. On a huge map you could team up with others and fight rival crews, covering the map with your individual style of graffiti art.
I got the Xbox console and JSRF/ Sega GT 2002 bundle back in the day, I played Sega GT 2002 for a bit but damn did I play the ever living **** out of Jet Set Radio Future. As a musician, the soundtrack was perfect and the art style was perfect. **** those sewer levels though, they had me raging so hard but I pushed through and made it all the way to the end. Currently DLing xemu and the ISO to try it again
I really want to get a single copy of this game. Have one for Sega GT 2002, but not this. And from listings, the combo pack is more common than the two separate copies for each
Sega was super big on style over substance during their early 00's era. Sure, a lot of their games had some jank and bad cameras, but man, did you feel cool while playing them!
Jet Grind Radio was the North American name (copyright issue), it was Jet Set elsewhere and the re-release uses that name. I prefer the American name, though.
This game would have benefitted of backwards compatibility. I've been playing some original Xbox games and they are amazing for the most part, especially with Psychonauts and Timesplitters.
I don’t need to watch this because I already know the answer, but I will because more Jet Set content. I’m sure most already know but in case you don’t, if you want to play a game like JSR ~ Future, look up Bomb Rush Cyber Funk
Far too many people don't understand understand, understand understand, understand understand the concept of this game.
Loved this game back in the day!
I see what you did there ;)
I was like "the fuck are you saying" and then the memory was triggered
The soundtrack alone is a classic!!

The JSRF community appreciates you for giving us our daily fix. We will never get tired of hearing different perspectives on our favorite game.
My first xbox game...what a gem.
Damn, this game was both timeless and a great time capsule of Sega in the early 2000s
Yes it does! It holds up better than the original!
Agreed, and even the original holds up really well unless you’re going for 100% haha
Agree a sequel better than the original.
Still i don't get why sega use to promote more the original game than future in current time
@@raidenstark315 because Sega only cares about success
Hard disagree
The controls are def better in Future; going back to the first game had me fighting them instead of having fun.
Remember when I got my Xbox, magical times. I really miss those times
I got that bundle of 2 games still but my Xbox got the red ring of death ☠️
Yes omg yes! The timeless graphics, the amazing soundtrack, the streamlined open-world exploration with no time limits. Plus the anti-establishment vibes! My favorite game ever.
Happy you covered JSRF and you enjoyed it, game on!
my all-time favorite video game
It's among the all time great games period!
U ain't lying
One of my first games in 2002 for Xbox. Got super into this and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle at the time. These games made me backtrack and acquire a Dreamcast with Sonic Adventure and Jet Grind Radio.
That's awesome! I'm sure you had a blast with those Dreamcast titles!
One of the GOAT games right here
Drives me insane that this was not added to the backwards compatibility on modern Xboxes.
Answer: Yes, it will always hold up, forever. Like this is the greatest video game ever crafted by human hands. It stands at the APEX of video games. Bomb Rush got really close to overtaking JSRF but they missed the mark by a couple of points. However, they damn sure earn a seat at the table.
Love the video! Would love to see more Xbox 360 reviews! Especially skyrim!
I was gonna give you a list of some of my favorite OG box games, but the list became too long after 5 seconds.

I never played this one or the Dreamcast one, but I love talking about video games. Great content as always, Mr. Camp Xbox!
Oh nice! I really want to try Doom 3 system link co-op!
@campxbox it's super fun but much shorter than the single player game. You and a buddy can crush Doom 3 in an afternoon. The vs game is fun, too!
Doom 3 ROE has no co-op but also had a fun vs game.

Once you pick up all the nuances in movement and clock the combo system it’s so much better.
@OtsoCafe my only issue with bomb rush is the map is poorly conected
BRM is a valid clone and fun in it's own right, but doesn't play as well, sound as good or look as dope as JSRF honestly, it feels empty in comparison..still love to see it though and hope a sequel is in the works
My issue is the combat bogs down the platforming and exploration. @raidenstark315
I also just played it pretty much with the same sentiment like you - I wasn`t sure at first but I ended up loving it
Been waiting for this one! Classic game
SEGA was absolutely on fire in 2002. This was the year I was introduced to Phantasy Star Online on the GameCube and JSRF on the Xbox. Two games that have left a lasting impact on me. I’m glad I’ve held onto my JSRF disc til this day

I haven't gotten to play Sunset yet, but I've heard it's similar in style! I'll have to check it out.
@campxbox it's worth it.
The Jet Set Radio games are often criticised for being "style over substance", but it seems a lot of people think these games lack substance simply because they control differently from Tony Hawk 😂

Awesome review for a great game! I played it a lot back in the day and also the predecessor on the dreamcast!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Coop for this game would have been revolutionary, especially during a time when couch coop/multiplayer was actually on the list of needs for a game
Totally agree! That would be so much fun!
never had that thought ... hmmm interesting
Well supposedly there’s a coop mod for CXBX that’s caught my eye recently, so it’s possible
@@ThatsJustMid xbox emulation still got a long way too imo i was having crazy frame drops sometimes its a shame do u have the same issue?
On CXBX, yes unfortunately. Xemu surprisingly works better there. Both have been getting updates in the past year so idk what’s up with CXBX.
The original JSR is what got me into aggressive inline skating back in the day. I’m 37 now and still own my blades
got the jet set radio future bundle spring of 2002 and was hooked immediately. it gave me a reason to doodle soon to be graffiti all over my school work and living in NYC as a kid through out the 90s and early 2000s it held had a lot of value to bring that art into real life later as a teenager. Loved this growing up! I never got far but I wish I had this again! Soundtrack is godly!
Amazing how beautiful this game is.
The original JSR is my favorite game of all time, personally I don't like JSRF as much but there are many great things about it.
I think I like the original more as well. It's more colorful and the music is more memorable, imo. But it's hard as hell, goddamn
Wish there was a Rollerblade racing game with this style
Still play this game on OG Xbox, imma play it when I get off work now
Every aspect of this game still holds up perfectly, I find the fluidity of gameplay absolutely flawless and still extremely fun.
The soundtrack is in a league of its own, a solid 11/10.

I still listen to some of the soundtrack to this day
just started playing jsrf again, on pc this time and this game brings back so many memories!
I remember seeing an ad for it in an Xbox magazine or something, immediately knew I had to play it. Rented it from blockbuster and ended up just buying the copy, played it so much the disc eventually just couldn't work anymore 😞
I still listen to the soundtrack when I commute to work in the morning
Most people bought an Xbox for Halo, I bought one for Jet Set Radio. My favorite game on the system!

Very nice video. Fantastic game from a lost era where full price games could be *this* bold and flavourful *sigh*
This is an exciting one.
Literally my favorite game of all time. Soundtrack is insanely catchy. I play it once a year. If you guys like this check out Bomb Rush Cyberfunk!
It also demonstrates, by contrasting with Wind Waker, that there is a lot of variation within cel-shaded art styles. Wind Waker is soft and dreamlike, where JSRF has an intense, high-contrast cyberpunk and almost hip-hop aesthetic
Absolutely loved JSFR for Xbox as a kid. Eventually I found out about Jet Grind Radio and bought that for the dreamcast, both classics.
I’m so glad this game included Birthday Cake, Cibo Matto has become one of my favorite bands.
As someone who just played it for the first time ever a couple weeks ago, yes it does!
One of my favourite games 🙌🏾
JET SET, JET SET, J-S-R *groovy!* JET SET RADIOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! Awesome review for an awesome game. And a #2 spot!
I'm glad you enjoyed the review!

Idk if its just me but this could pass for a 360 game its so good.
Oh, EASILY. I've played countless 360 games with worse graphics lol
Oh yeah it's a stand out title to this day.
I agree with you! JSRF definitely could have been a launch title for the 360.
And it's an early og xbox game too. Sega really worked hard on it and Panzer Dragoon Orta which also came out at that time and still looks insane. I hope Microsoft paid them well, lol, I'm sure they had

Agree with pretty much every point
Happy to hear it!
9 out of 10
Its got some jank but no game is without it.
JSRF to me, is the closest thing to perfect a game could be though.
The lack of replayability that the first game, and even the GBA port, had severely hurts future for me.
Maybe you could do a Bomb Rush Cyberfunk review on Series X in the future 👀
Definitely on the to do list.
My favorite game of all time. Playing it as we speak on the Xbox emulator on my Steam Deck
Love these games. I play the original through Redream and it's just stunning especially with a few mods added. These soundtracks are amazing.
Jet Set Radio Future is in my top 10 games of all time. If you're a fan like me, don't forget to check out Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, it's basically Jet Set Radio 3 👍

Something tells me that they said it was coming to the DC, but it actually wasn't. I'm sure someone out there knows much more than I do though.
One needs only to see 3 seconds of footage and listen to 3 seconds to understand that yes, it does indeed hold up.

Interesting that Future was originally an Dreamcast game, I wonder if a build exists out there!
Yeah, JSRF is still a classic. I even bothered to play the odd GBA port of the Dreamcast game called Jet Grind Radio that uses the THPS2 engine on the same platform and it’s a nice relic of a different time.

This is one of the greatest, I got it on a dual disc w sega gt
OF COURSE 🔥 even as unfinished as it is. Its a great time.
JET SET RADIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!
This will never get old :)
It's special to me because it's early 2000s but doesn't completely dive into the whole "x treme" thing
